You're not supposed to kill lithium batteries, it's probably a protective measure or battery sag. With older or not properly used batteries, internal cell resistance increases. This causes the voltage to "sag" a lot more when higher amperage is drawn. The voltage will drop under it's true value and slowly recover. This can push batteries below a safe voltage which would result in the bikes failsafe cutting off battery power.

I have a Sur Ron X black edition with a 60v-32a/h battery. 17-20 miles max range doing offroad. Going from a 54tooth to a 60 tooth rear sprocket didn't change the range much. Yeah, pretty lame range for what you pay on one of these bikes. I then upgraded the controller to BAC4000 and did stock battery bypass. Range was about the same, maybe 1-2 miles less on 7000W setting (stock controller is about 5000W.) I then upgraded to a 60V/60a/hr battery and range is 26-29 miles. Kinda lame after having spent $1700 on that battery.
Thanks. Good to get a review from a guy who rides dirt bikes as well. I'm thinking of getting one of these in Australia. Will also check other vids you do on this with mods. Cheers.
Which is preferable, the Sur Ron, or the Segway version? I like the idea of the Segway app to control the settings, rather than sequential button presses on the Sur Ron. However, i would still want the aftermarket part upgrades available for the Sur Ron. Though, the aftermarket parts should, in theory, work for both bikes since they are built the same.
Need a down hill course w turns for more regeneration maybe you complete ride. Maybe a different approach to throttle consumption of energy. An interesting goal. Know of someone up heading similar cycle for more battery power. More power=more distance.
Good ride..amazing bike..I will bet you went into LVC..Low Voltage Cutoff..that is to protect the speed control and Battery from damage..happens on my RC's all the time..have fun.
As far as I know most batteries if you dead drain them they will get damaged and won't be efficient anymore so nowadays everything with a battery has it's battery status manipulated and a safe switch hardprogrammed into them which makes them shut down at about 10% so I guess your display just straight up told you the true percentage and shuts down at 6% so safe the battery.
No modern lithium battery ever goes below actual 10% the bms will shut it down at 48.7 volts. In In rush conditions. E.g your battery is at 50v "pressure" and you hard throttle closing the circuit and putting large demand on the potentiometer ( throttle ) the voltage will drop below 48.7 volts and bms shuts it off, hence why it "died" at 6% it did not have the "pressure" to move the bike+rider before it dropped to cut off.
@@James23crf I got the kaniwaba pedal kit I recommend it over the kit from Luna. It’s only for looks though it doesn’t actually work to pedal the bike.
I'm really enjoying watching those videos, exploring trails without restraint is so much fun ! If you have the money put Lipo and a Bac8000 and this thing will rips !!
Interested to hear about that 6% deal. Usually electric drive systems have an auto protection system built in, so that 6% should had ideally been like 30% of that batteries true capacity. If that's not the case, I wouldn't run that battery that low often and if you do I'd trickle charge it at least back up to 25% instead of giving it a regular charge from dead.
The reason for power loss is that you used more in rush current than the bms allowed. Voltage is pressure, so less "pressure" means less power in in rush ( less head room ) if you start very light on throttle you likely could get to 1% the bms doesn't allow a lithium battery ever to get to actual 0% cause if they do the battery will never recharge .
@@iRollWithPunches if you're talking about restoring dead lithium cells, once it drops below the safe voltage (3.0v for example on LiPo) you can technically restore the cell by trickle charging, but the internal resistance could be a lot higher and the battery may not hold a charge. Higher internal resistance means higher temperature too. I wouldnt want to risk a house fire.
@@ownzies100 Good point. I guess I've only used LiPo batteries with pre-charge resistors built in which I believe solves this issue. I've never owned an e-bike only used batteries for solar :P
Lithium ion batteries should never be drained all the way for longevity. I was actually surprised you pushed it all the way to 6% but I was a little relieved to see it shut off. Haha. From the RC days I think the general rule of thumb is don’t let lithium ion batteries go below 10% for the longest life out of them
No modern lithium battery ever goes below actual 10% the bms will shut it down at 48.7 volts. In In rush conditions.
Hey glad you like em I have a blast making them! I am looking into that for sure!
Yeah in the future I wont take it down past 20% but I will be doing some research on this and posting my findings for sure!
@@MrDmadness I believe you would have to use a battery charger to 'wake up the battery.
I would want to mtb that trail, would be sick.
I want to do it in the spring for sure! Don't have a MTB yet though
I used to run trials events using Bultaco Alpina , and a Sherpa T . many hrs in the woods just riding ...
Sounds awesome !
Good video! Good commentary!
It would be so fun to have one of these! Great vid man!
We will have to give one away then!
Definitely off roady funness 🤪 ! Great video bro I had off roady funness just watching it I wanna ride out there to it’s so kewl that’s your back yard !
