What made ‘95 stand out was that in spite of a lack of story material for the video game series at the time, they adapted the formula from “Enter the Dragon” in much the same way the first game did, and it worked.
Even with a PG rating and some cheesy 90’s CGI, the ‘95 MK movie was more fun to watch.

It’s insane that the kommunity knows so much about the lore as we’ve been playing the games since it’s beginning but Hollywood can’t find anyone to write a good script.
That's because they're intentionally not looking. They don't want anyone with knowledge, just who will be yes-men/women and do what the corporate suits tell them too. Hell, the writer for this movie admitted he had no knowledge of the games nor made any effort to learn. And worse, he's going to write a sequel for the crappy Netflix Death Note movie.

@@AmanOU2be All of them are important in their own right. Reiko is one of the head generals of the Netherrealm army. Nitara has her own importance during the 3D era. Mileena is important with her connection to Kitana. Reptile is one of Shang Tsung's top warriors. And Goro was the undefeated MK champion.

The actor Cole obviously didn't have the swagger to act as Johnny so they scraped the script and made up Cole Yong. I hear they killing off Sonja and Jax in the sequel to replace them with 2 more made up asian characters.

I wanted to see this movie solely for the fight scenes and the director even said he made sure it had the best fight scenes ever. They were such a let down. They were so obviously choreographed and slow paced to the point that you can predict their next move.

So...if the Hasashi bloodline is so important, who hasn't Raiden been breeding tons of Hasashi's over the 200 years since Scorpion's death? Why hasn't he been keeping and training these descendants foe the tournament? In theory every one of them would have the birthmark, as it's never established that it only appears on certain family members.

Standards have fallen SO bad, and people were SO starved for a new Mortal Kombat movie that they'll defend this.
They know people are willing to settle, that's why we keep getting forcefed mediocrity -- at BEST.
Should have been a Kano movie, he stole the show.
Funny thing is, I've seen way more people say the 1995 original is still superior. The new movie is just so full of so many problems that two good fights can't justify sitting through such an awful adaptation. Hell, I still haven't watched the full movie but between this and SonicHaXD's review, I made the right call and almost everyone I've asked agrees the movie sucks.
Can't believe this situation. Heck even I had a better storyline even though it's improvised upon this one.
The 1995 movie, in spite of its limited special effects; still stayed true to the roots of the game...the tournament. Warner Bros. was never 100 percent behind the film in the first place, and it showed by allowing a first-time director to handle a major, iconic piece of intellectual property such as Mortal Kombat. Suggestion: Have someone like Guillermo Del Toro direct the next film, and have Ed Boon co-write it.
That would have been so much better. Del Toro is a great director.
Fun fact Cameron Diaz was given the role of Sonya blade , but Cameron injuried herself during her stunt training, so they got Bridget Wilson in to play Sonya an she didn't have much time to prepare for the fight between Kano and Sonya! But alas it became iconic lol

While Mileena and Kitana's race isn't Asian they're Edenian, usually Kitana and Mileena are light skinned women. Mileenas actress should have been cast as Jade or Tanya who are already dark skinned

Well, you can argue that the Edenians are mixed-heritage. Kitana however has always been portrayed with fair-skin (she was played by a Latina actress in the first and second movies and it seemed Kitana's appearance were based of Talisa Soto's appearance there after until she became more Asian in 11). So, in that regard, Mileena being a clone of her sister also should've been fair skinned. Yeah, they're still disrespecting the source material.
Not lying, I actually said it in writing on a Mortal Kombat page on Facebook, that I wouldn't be surprised if there were no tournament in this.

There was just no way in the hell this was gonna top the original 1995 MK movie. You wanna know why many people believe it's the best video game adaptation movie? Because the plot isn't convoluted, it's kept simple and fun like the game, the characters are all perfectly cast (some casting choices like Kano were so well-received, it changed his character in the games as well), the fights were generally all good and engaging, and the music was AWESOME!
Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage was the best part of the movie, he has the best lines
Spot on review mate. I watched this train wreck, then a week later watched it again with my older son(who missed my previous viewing) in the hopes to salvage something with a second run through. I felt even more stupid the second time. What a disappointment in every way.
Ok lets be real here. Kano is more the replacement for Johnny cage. He was pretty much comic relief in every version of mk, except for the godawful mkx story mode.
I normally would NEVER say this but my biggest drawback was all the cussing in the movie like the writers were making up for not having a good dialogue

Originally his arms weren't ripped off by ermac. He just got new robotic arms because he didn't feel confident or something like that. He still had his arms tho.

Yeah originally they were cybernetic covers (don't really have a name for them. If you unlock an alt costume from deadly alliance it'll show this.
I haven't heard anyone ask why it is subzero can live for so long yet. He must be ancient since he killed scorpions family and clan and then the baby grows to continue the bloodline.
That only happened in the second timeline. In the original, he augmented his arms with bionic implants so he would have a better chance at fending off Outworld.
And the kicking out of Johnny Cage makes even less sense when you realize that he's not the hero of Mortal Kombat. Lui Kang an Asian character is literally the chosen one as stated every single game. So all they did was taken the chosen one status away from one Asian character and give it to a new Asian character that nobody knows of cares about.

This MK was almost as bad as Annihilation. It's nowhere as good as MK 95. This version lacks character, presentation, music, direction, and most importantly, entertainment. I haven't been this bored from a movie since The Rise Of Skywalker

I don’t understand how tf my friends thought this movie was awesome. I told them that the fight scenes were edited horribly and some had bad choreography. One of them said that I had short attention span(as a joke ofc). I mentioned how tf can I pay attention to the fight scenes scenes when both the camera man and editor have severe Parkinson’s. They thought I only cared about the characters and story which I told them multiple times I didn’t care about the story. Since the story and writing is trash maybe it could have good fights but the movie doesn’t have any half decent fights. Honesty I realized how MK is also known for its great lore and stories. Saying that the MK movie doesn’t need a good story is a shit argument.
The only decent fights are the ones between scorpion and sub and even one of them is ruined when cole joins in.

I agree with some things, but I enjoyed the movie.
So did many others, I enjoyed the fight scenes and Kano was hilarious. Sub-Zero and Scorpion were also cool.
In my opinion, it was not great, but certainly not bad. I felt it was enjoyable, but there’s always those who disagree on something. Which is alright.
Raiden is a real dick in this movie. He openly mocks some of the champions which is something I'd expect from Shang Tsung.
He let's his fighters even get harmed or killed (i.e Kung Lao stupid death) and never steps in.
'95's Raiden least saw potential in the champions and tried to guide them to be stronger. Which is way more close to the soure material.
Also Nitara was an absolute waste of a character for this movie. Why was she included if she was just going to be offed without even a decent fight.
The Rayden character peaked with Lambert. Every other Rayden so far has been a disappointment

Even without watching this rant, I can clearly tell where this is going since the title says it all. It just makes MK Legacy a lot more legit than this disastrous film due to terrible script writing.

David Callaham wrote the 2005 Adaptation of Doom and recently

@End Cancel Culture {Replace the Mainstream} To give context, Callaham was one of three writers on Wonder Woman 84 with Geoff Johns (proven to kind of suck with writing scripts) and Patty Jenkins (who clearly wrote the script but the other two either reworked or added to it). For the topic at hand, this is Russo's script but it was clearly rewritten by Callaham to force a character like Cole Young down our throat (I have a sneaking suspicion he was originally a white guy but made mixed Asian for literally diversity points) as a studio mandate. On top of a Yes man commercial director in Simon McQuiod, let's call this mess of a film for what it is. A cash grab.
One major plot hole with the Kana is when Sub-Zero kills Scorpion he should have gained Scorpion's tattoo thus breaking the birth right and there being no Cole.
Sub-Zero should have been like Kurgan in Highlander and be getting more powerful by killing protectors and collecting their tattoos. This would also explain why he was able to live 400 years.
They never really discussed what happens when 2 fighters who already have the mark kill one another. I think the safe assumption is that Bi-Han already had the mark because he had ice powers and was just learning to use them.
It's probably like a Lantern ring in the sense that the mark seeks those with the potential to be great and will likely stay within the bloodline. Death with out transferring (mark vs mark) likely leads to those who get the mark at birth. Example: The Great Kung Lao and his descendent Kung Lao.

@@charlesdavis8725 Did they show the symbol on the baby? The birth right logically would go to the first born male, but Sub-Zero killed him. If every child gains one, then there should be an army of posdible champions to defend the Earth after 400 years.

Using the Highlander rule makes sense because it gives Sub-Zero a purpose for 400 years and would explain why champions are so rare.

Thank you for this, I thought I was going crazy because I agree with everything you said and more - but it's like everyone is brainwashed to think THIS movie is great, it's an insult to the genuine MK fans, and I'm not going to disrespect NRS because this movie clearly goes against the original lore completely! And I had zero idea they boycotted Johnny Cage - replacing him to Cole young... I thought Sisi Stringer as Mileena was bad! Who should of been Asain ... The casting choice was obviously political, most of the actors, the director, writer the producer - Australians, and who had the most screen time!?.... The Australian who acted as the Australian - Kano, who Clearly dominates the entire scene, over acted and was irritating to watch after a while, he made Liu Kang look dumb, should of been reversed as explained by Ed Boon Liu Kang is the heart of MK normally, but I can't help but feel they made "Kano the bully" out as the favourite, which Really wasn't supposed to happen but because everyone else was weak and acted "avarage" it made Kano stood out even more, personally I thought he was extremely over the top .... The script writing was high school material.... Just overall bad.

Sisi Stringer Aka "Mileena" quoted in her latest interview that she didn't like the MK9 Mileena, saying - "She looks like a Striper and wasn't going to portray her like that"... Not only does that make me really angry as a Mileena fan, but Just goes to show she didn't make any effort into research the character... she took 1 look and went "nope ain't doing that"... Then why F*#ing audition as Mileena then? Well Sisi listen - Mileena is MUCH More than just what you mocked from maybe 5 seconds in the game. Mileena is one of the most fascinating, vicious female characters in MK, and YEAH Mileena IS meant to be somewhat seductive, fun and inviting - a kinda damsel in distress to allure her opponents in her web, then she takes off her mask revealing her permanent Tarkatan Teeth, which should NOT appear in CGI for maybe 15 seconds... Mileena would be a dream come true to play, I've seen better Cosplay Mileena than this, and they deliver decent looking Make up Teeth that looks fantastic on them, these girls are not professional or anything, but in the movie industry when you spend millions on the costumes ecs your telling me you could not give Mileena realistic Tarkatan Teeth? Absolute BS, the original Sinbad Movies had better monsters and we are going back 40 years!. Not only your insulting the original character, the lore but also the fans. Both Sisi & the producers failed miserably to portray Mileena, as you made zero efforts into getting into the character - don't try to justify it by saying "we wanted something new"... No! you can't re design a well known character who is known to look oriental with her traditional pink costume and the Twin sister of Princess Kitana - so does this mean Sisi Stringer is Kitana? I Hope not, don't Butcher Kitana too.

I don't expect a naked Mileena on screen but my god there are ways of portraying a classy, seductive Mileena.

Sisi portrayed "Mileena" in the most bland way possible and the joke is she had a stunt double? For the short boring fighting performance she gave they also had s stunt double...? Wouldn't it be just believable to just cast a REAL agile gymnast or martial artist to play Mileena? There are plenty of beautiful athletic women in the world, I mean show off those skills & Inspire!. Lewis Tan didn't even get to show off his skills and his a professional martial artist! This movie should of had 80% of fighting screen time and less BS, I don't get it lol... Bring in more talent and less politics to movies...
Plus Sisi has a video on Instagram of her painfully trying to do a simple cartwheel and a back roll Which she clearly had difficulty doing - but doesn't show any of it in the movie after all her efforts..... Lol, and in another interview said her audition was awful but she still got the part?.... 🤔 Well the others must of REALLY sucked if Sisi was the best out of the bad bunch... 🤣 I'm done !

We all like a certain version of our favorite characters. Doesn’t make us any less of an mk fan. I agree with you on mileena being an amazing character, yet I’m with sisi on the fact that I don’t care for mk9 mileena and prefer her looking more assassin-like. That doesn’t insult the character, nor is it mocking. It’s just an opinion... For her portrayal, I wouldn’t blame sisi for that. Just blame the writers and director for not giving her enough screen time and script to show more of mileenas personality. No matter how much sisi studied the character, the script is what determines how much she can show with the character. She certainly did great with what she was given. You said she’s a vicious character and she portrayed that. She doesn’t wear pink, but clothing doesn’t change a character. Also, there are endless mileena clones, so perhaps they’ll bring a more seductive looking mileena to the next mk movie as I’m sure not every mileena clone is exactly the same.

Actually Kitana wasn't Asian, the new game made her Asian just like they swap many races because the bulk of the development team was made up of Asians.
In mk9 mileena looked light skin black and Kitana looked Mexican. That’s when they looked their sexiest. The new games and movies no longer sexualize the female characters and change their faces every new game it’s no big deal guys smh.

They never really say you get the marking for killing someone, do they? I think the movie never clarifies it well due to the inconsistencies like the one you mention. It would make sense if the Marking transfered to the closest person rather then the killer. Well at least that would make it more consistent.
