I watched the animated "Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge" just a day before this movie, and it was just a straight up better version in every way imaginable.
That seems to be a reoccurring trend when it comes to Warner Bros and animated adaptations vs big blockbuster disappointments.
Heck the 1995 version is still superior

Right? I hate stupid people involve on the adaptation of any media to another. And Hollywood is one of champion of screwing up adaptations. Why they need to try hard to be "original". When they aren't? How complicate is to follow the source material to the letter? In their quest to make the movie adaptation their own, they end up screwing the original story completely, until they manage to do it. The thing is.. Instead of owning a masterpiece they own a pile-of-shit!
If they are making a movie from scratch they can do whatever they want, since they are paying for it. But in the case of a adaptation the one paying for it are the fans of the original source material. They are basically SCAM.

They should have done a solo Bi-Han Sub-Zero movie with that Kratos knockoff setting up him killed Scorpions family and having Sub-Zero die at the end of the next movie (that would be an actual Mortal Kombat movie because Bi-Han had ties to the earth realm fighters before dying). It would have been a thousand times better and it would make Sub-Zero's death more sad and Scorpion's revenge more satisfying

I saw the 7 min opening scene and thought holy shit this is going to be great! Turns out the movie was 20 mins long with 70 mins of weird filler. Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada are the only actors that managed to make their roles memorable.

@@ArmeniusLOD The first one was okay but still spat on the game pretty heavily, from screwing up the main character to including Pyramid Head in a story he wasn't in because he was popular. We just don't talk about the second movie.
And Warcraft was god awful, even more so if you know the original lore and not the WoW rewrites that turn the orcs into green saviors and anti-heroes all around. Okay that started in Warcraft 3 but you get the point.
They should have kept the legendary MK soundtracks. That opening "MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!" in the 90's movie got you pumped for some kickassery!

David Callaham has written, rewritten, and supplemented scripts since 2005 with his first film being the epically trashy Doom film. Greg Russo is the newbie for sure and they hired him and McQuiod to force changes and mandates from the studio into this film. That's why it's such a mess to begin with.
And the director made his career doing commercials. He's the epitome of a "yes man."
They replaced Johnny Cage with a character that literally doesn't belong there

I give them just a sliver of leeway since they have to cram tons of lore within 2 hours, and they want to make this movie for anyone to watch and enjoy and not just fans of the games. They are trying to make money, after all. Frankly, if someone is going to make a movie based on a video game or book, it should have the intention of appealing to the core fans. That's where the money will be made. Not from general audiences.

The best part about this movie was the intro scene and Kano's one liners. They could have used Kano as our tool to explain things to the audience and had a way better movie bu cutting out Cole entirely.

@Cristo Alba first of all you don't have to pretend it's a video game film. It is one. Second, its a mortal kombat movie. Given that knowledge, I don't know what anyone was expecting. Because I expected cheesy dialogue, cheesy acting, over the top violence, and a streamlined plot. Because let's face it. The game lore is convoluted as hell. I honestly don't know what expectations people had. Because I got exactly what I wanted.
Cole felt like a fanfiction character, he's related to one of the most beloved characters on the series, he beats iconic characters and gets to be respected by stablished characters and he has a very strong if not broken power that he gets out of nowhere
He was the AVGN of this movie.
Eugene sounds like he's never heard of Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Bruce Lee, or practically every fighting anime protagonist.

They have a stun co-ordinator or as it comes "action director" but this is infortunately very uncommon to change.

Bruce Lee had very much control of his choreography because he was a superstar. Other examples are Jackie Chan or maybe jet Li . Normal us movies will never come close to asian Martial Arts movie jsut because they dont focus and rely on it.

I swear, if they just deleted Cole it would've been a lot better. I hated Cole more and more throughout the movie. He's the worst self insert I've ever seen, because he's a complete wimp even at the end and just bland as oatmeal. Heck, Sonya is stronger than he is even without any powers. He's a joke.

What? I watched the movie last night, and I did not get the impression that Sonya and Kano were friends at all.
Edit: The first time we see Kano is him tied to a chair as Sonya's prisoner.
It's because Sonia can't even talk with kano without punching him and in the movie they were kind of working together
@@jtc620 Circumstances that force people to work together is a farcry from being buddy buddy. Sonya mentioned how Kano had killed the champion they were sent to find, so that is why he was there in the first place. Sonya already knew from the start that the guy was a murderer and no good. She did not like him at all.
Edit: She also punched Kano in the beginning after he said something.
They were too comfy around each other when compared to the first movie they would kill each other at first sight.

I honestly never thought I would use boring and Mortal kombat in the same sentence but this movie proved me wrong. The whole murdering of Earth's champions before the tournament made no sense. I always understood that if a realm broke the rules of the tournament then the elder gods (not just Raiden) would step in. Yeah they made Prince Goro the Mortal kombat champion a goon sent to kill a guy's family then kill him off like nothing.
MK's Elder Gods are lazy and inept at best, but usually just seem disinterested and inattentive. In MK9 when Shao Kahn breaks the rules and invades Earth Raiden alerts the Elder Gods and they basically tell him "lol the tournament was all a joke anyways later bro".

The first part before the title reveal was filmed like a movie. Then it devolved into CW level writing and acting. Only the Veteran Asian actors brought anything to the table.
Yeah, the intro feels like a proof-of-concept or pilot episode for a much, much better production.

Jax didn't show up until 2. BUT MK9 did make it to where he went to the tournament. In the original game timeline, he built his arms as weapons to prepare for Outworld's invasion. In the MK9 timeline Ermac ripped his arms off with his powers. In this movie they just switched Ermac with Sub Zero.
I still remember they didn't implyied he lost his arms, in the animated series an episodd was about him fighting without his prostetics. I know the series was bad, but it was supervised by the creators and the animations were used in official art.
@@MrlspPrt I think in the 1995 MK movie they said that the US government gave him state of the art prosthetics because... super soldier reasons? and Rayden said that his arms were a weakness because he depended on them for his strength. Then in the final tournament he pulled off his prosthetics because they were being a weakness to him, and the moral of the story was be true to yourself, then we all laugh and smile and go home
I honestly don't get why people care about the movie lining up with the "canon" of MK, after mk9-11 not even NRS cares about the "canon".
I really can't believe that the main complaint of MK media has been the CONSTANT rehash of the first tournament, then we finally get a decent movie with an actual unique take and everyone's losing their shit because "omg this isn't like the main story!".
I get the complaints over the new character, he was so bland I don't even remember his name, but the rest was pretty good if you're not expecting a 10/10 movie lol

I don't think anyone is looking forward to MK12 I don't even think there is going to be an MK12 especially considering how netherrealm studios wants to milk MK11 for the foreseeable future until everyone gets tired/sick of the game (which they already have) don't even get me started on the microtransactions/Lootboxs that are in the game and the fact that the krypt can only be accessed by being online (I still can't believe that they turned Mortal Kombat into a live surface / DRM game)

Mortal Kombat 1995 had 3 arcade games with a few pages of text, cool characters and stages to work with as source material. There were a few things that were wrong but it was true to the spirit of Mortal Kombat for the most part.

This movie was hilarious. Everything was awkward and strange. I was laughing the whole way through lol
How to make this into a good movie: keep the first scene, then follow SCORPION as he makes a pact with the gods to become a fighter and gets all the weird powers and crap, and recruits the other fighters. Keep the group SMALL so the characters can be built up, and contrast this with Subzero working for the Outworld cuz he's a psycho who just likes killing and is totally full of himself. Then make their battle in the tournament the central focus after you've built them up and gotten their rivalry and the story of vengeance strongly founded in the audience's minds.
It's a simple formula that WORKS!! Two rivals with a bigger story and rival groups built around their central conflict.
Sheesh, I think any of us could have done a better job with so much material to work with.

No. Sub Zero is not a villain. Quan Chi murdered Hanzos (Scorpion) family. They could have made the movie about the established lore. That would have been good.
