- Do you think you might have a bipolar disorder? Listen as your host, Eric Tivers, and his guest Malaika Tolford discuss her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and ADHD, how common it is to have both, and the difference between bipolar I and II, plus much more on this episode of ADHD reWired.
Malaika is a ceramic artist and owner of Place Value Pottery; she also teaches at a nonprofit craft organization. They diagnosed Malaika with bipolar two disorder in 2013 and added an ADHD diagnosis in January 2020, which provided some pieces of her mental health puzzle. She is a mom of two boys trying to navigate COVID while working from home and keeping out of the way of her husband's zoom meetings.
Listen as Malaika shares why she got in touch with Eric, the difference between bipolar I and II, and what led her to seek evaluation and diagnosis for bipolar disorder. Because of suicidal thoughts, Malaika sought medication for bipolar depression and was lucky enough that the first thing they tried worked for her.
Malaika discusses what happened in her life that led her to believe that she might also have ADHD, the struggle to figure out who she really was and how the pandemic made that journey even more difficult. Eric believes that if you can tolerate it, medication is one of the best treatments for ADHD.
Malaika speaks about her pottery business, how she has pivoted to online sales since the pandemic, and how pottery is relatable to both of her diagnoses. She describes her pottery and shares that she puts maps on all of her pieces because she likes geography, so please check out her work at Place Value Pottery if that is your thing.

53, recently diagnosed ADHD / Bipolar 2 /dyslexia ... I normally am not about labels, yet in this case helps and explains a lot. Some challenges over past few years intensified my symptoms which is why I sought a diagnosis. Tools and meds have made a difference. I too found this video validating and can relate to her experiences.
I have Bipolar II, dyscalculia, alexythymia and am ADHD and I'm also autistic. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II years ago but only just got diagnosed ADHD last year (2021) and autistic this year (2022).
I was being treated for Bipolar II for years but I wasn't getting any better so went to get assessed again at the urging of friends and this is when I received my ADHD diagnosis. Things got a LITTLE better but I was STILL not improving at the rate that it was expected that I should be improving at.
This is when I went BACK for ANOTHER assessment and recieved autism diagnosis and THAT was the missing piece. Now, I'm FINALLY on the road to recovery and self-understanding and I could not feel better 💕
Having the proper diagnosis really does (in my case) make a huge difference and have the possibility ro change one's life. I now have so much better of an understanding of why I do the things I do and why I behave the way I behave and I understand that it's because I'm not only mentally ill but my brain is just...wired differently and there's nothing wrong with that ☺️
I was totally distracted looking up hyperbole and a half when he said that 😂😂😂 thank you so much for sharing this. It’s so refreshing hearing from someone who also was diagnosed with bipolar first.
I deal with bipolar one and ADHD I'm 58 years old male and it has been absolutely horrendous lately especially like the last three to four months has been extremely bad I wish there was a way to get some free help just feel like mental torture.
Hey could someone send me the link for the interview that’s mentioned at the beginning please
This has been so helpful to me. Thank you.
So happy to hear that.
I would’ve liked to hear that her husband is also trying to stay out of her way and trying to keep the kids out of the way as she works too…
Thank you for this video! I am diagnosed with Dyslexia and bipolar, but I am fairly certain that I also have adhd. I'm super nervous about having to take more medications, so I am stalled out on getting assessed.
I've struggled with OCD and eating disorders since I was 8 years old, as I've got older my mental health has got worse and worse and I've been searching for answers desperately with no one until recently able to give me any answers, I'm now almost 31. Turns out I have autism, ADHD and bipolar and I feel now I can digest these things and work on my core I might have a chance at recovery from my eating disorder. Thank you for this video 💕
Thank you for this …. I have bipolar type one with adhd diagnosis
Thank you ..
Someone please share your meds regimen, how long it took to find rught medication or cocktail of medications.
Lamictal and Intuniv; pointless to share dosage as its so individualized.
@@brianh1969 is that your cocktail? Of course dosages are individual but it is good to hear from experience what average starting dose is and how much they take now-
Just go to Reddit
It’s like I’m running on a motor through sticky honey and I can’t read a paragraph without jumping words 😭. sleep is just a nightmare to comprehend.
I might have both!
me too frustatingly and sadly my dr said i didn't have ADHD and because i am bad at being assertive in general and they just shot me down when I suggested i had ADHD and they just said NO YOU DON'T HAVE THAT ! I say frustingly because it takes 2 years max to get intial assesment and i've now gotten as far as filling out a questionaire with my parents. But that was over 6 months ago. I have now requested a new dr.
Being triple exceptional isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. 😞
Hahaha listening first time , good intentions bad attention
It is very hard to live with a bipolar person with kids too. It’s almost devastating
