    All pitchers need to find exactly what grip works best for them. There is no one grip, all pitchers are different. The key is keeping your mechanics consistent, same arm speed, arm slot for all pitches. The best way to do this is master all pitches in the fastball family. Try different grips, pronate, supinate, wrist angle at 10-11 o'clock, 1-2 o'clock. Keep it safe, keep all pitches in the fastball family, try different grips and throw the heck out of it until you get the desired result. Great advice in this video!

    Some people curl their back foot toes so they can't push off fast which takes miles off the ball, while still not tipping the batter with a slower arm.

    I played until my junior year fall at a NAIA school. I didn’t learn how to keep my arm speed up on the change up until my sophomore year. That was the best season of my life including high school. A good change up can save your butt even if you don’t get it to sick missing bats all the time level. A good enough change up will give you an extra opportunity for weak contact when you need it most. That same year I stopped trying to hit 90 and pitched at 85-86 with heavy two seam movement. Those two things made all the difference in the world. I started to mature as a pitcher right before I tore my labrum. With everyone falling in the love with the slider these days, the big uncle Charlie curveball, and the circle change are becoming lost arts. If you have a good change up these days you are in a good spot because hitters don’t see enough of them.

    Very similar to how I threw changes. Quickly became my dominant pitch to the point I’d often leave my fastball out of the zone just to show some speed and work the change for for strikes. If I’d learned the pitch earlier and not started with curves my elbow probably wouldn’t have self destructed.

    i have almost no ability to SEE the movement of a ball being pitched, especially when I am pitching it. so I'm having a hard time seeing if the all is actually moving correctly when throwing this pitch. besides grip, is there anything else i need to do to make this pitch work? is it ALL in the grip, or does it also involve proper release?

      Yes, it does make into a very effective pitch when holding/gripping it this way ... That's one of Greg Maddox pitch, the way u hold/grip the ball . It worked for him during his 22 years : 18xgold Glover. Won 4 CY young awards IN A ROW!! 1992-1995. 8x all-star , he pitched a complete game throwing only 76 pitches and the team he was playing still scored 1 run on like 5 pitches in a 76 thrown complete game! Few times he had more wins than walks during a season! Professor MadDog ... O and one more thing ...... GO BRAVES!! Chop on!!

    That seems to be what Leo Mazzone used to teach at his clinics. Pressure is depending on pitcher preference. I was a knuckleballer so no one had a clue what to do with me...lol. I was in the “only Wakefield” era where he was the only one successful other than Hough and Candiotti. The circle change though does give allot of movement. I think a pitcher today could be immensely successful if he adopted it to his arsenal as just movement and speed differential is more than enough. But like every show today people want homeruns and powerstrike outs. Sad....:(

      @Davo2233 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nuckleballer. When or what conditions makes it move most? I know the answer because my father and I played catch he would never throw anything but knucklers. On one particular day, I couldn’t touch the ball with my glove. It was in, up, down, left ,right and it seemed to hop. So why so much movement?

      Jordan Kramer guys do well throwing like that to the point where the coaches kind of have to give them their due. They’ll have a coach try to change it, and they’ll ignore it and put up good performances till people stop trying to mess with their mechanics.

    If you don't pronate through the c / circle-change, you are just throwing garbage. The video does a great disservice in not high-lighting that.

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was simply highlighting what Greg Maddux had to say about the change-up. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @coachwhitford7315
      @coachwhitford7315 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No disservice at all because Maddux throws this the same as he does his 2 seam fastball. No pronation necessary. The circle change is a "show" pitch. For teaching pronation, circle to the target. The majority do not throw circle changes so why 'show' kids how to do it this way? Throwing pitches that require pronation is harder for most pitchers because it involves less developed muscles. Not to mention pronating is not even necessary for good change up ball movement. The key to an effective change is exactly what is stated in this video, fastball, fastball, fastball, throw the heck out of it. Hitters see and read fastball right up to the point that it's too late. They start the swing and then realize uh oh! Excellent advice! Also to note, grip is irrelevant to any pitch. I throw a curve gripping the ball like a 2 seam fastball. No one I know can get that particular grip to work for them. It's wrist angle and hand position/spin that matters most. I throw the heck out of all of my pitches, fastball, fastball, fastball! Sinker, change, slider, curve, all start off looking just like a fastball.

    • @kevinmosley3095
      @kevinmosley3095 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Y false. I throw this changeup just like a fast ball and it has very nasty movement. It looks like a fastball the whole way and at the last second it just drops.

    • @davidy9006

      @@kevinmosley3095 You and 123 pitcher are right. I kept drilling pronating through the pitch into my oldest son and he just couldn't do it despite his younger brother doing it. With your comments in mind, I switched my oldest son to the philosophy in the video. Shortly after I saw a significant improvement in his change-up. He didn't telegraph it and he located it much better.

    I learned how to throw a change up ( well what I called a change up) in little league. It would always catch the " swing for the fencers " off guard. Two strikes then the change up. Those guys would swing before the ball even reached them. Sorry ,you swung, can't take it back now . Strike three.
