I’m 38, and I remember when I was in college, playing walk-on D3 ball, I was obsessed with trying to learn the slider. I had a low-90’s fastball and was so close on the slider (couldn’t throw a curve ball to save my life though), but it would often stay flat. Seeing him talk about the loose grip and thumb placement makes total sense.
I would have done anything to have easily-accessible tutorials like this 20 years ago. It could have changed my life and I hope young pitchers today are taking advantage of these tips from an elite pitcher. This kind of stuff was rare without coming from wealth and paying thousands of dollars just 10-20 years ago.
If you were like me u probably had a bouncy ball throwing it against concrete wall in the driveway. Practicing catching ground balls, and accurately throwing whatever pitches you were good at, wanted to work on. Then I take a bucket of balls, hold my bat and throw the ball up and make contact, in the back yard. We had a chain link fence, I would backed up as far as I can go, play home run derby. All this helped me become a good baseball player.
Bauer is the guy that is pushing the evolution of pitching forward. Some guy who never got picked in little league is now gonna go to his backyard and burn ten thousand of these, 10-15 years from now we’ll see him in the majors lighting hitters up and otherwise that would have happened.
Bauer is nothing when teaching the slider. He won't even tell you what he learned May 2018 from Roger Beshens. Google what is a football slider. On center grip, throw like a football, stiff wrist.. How you like knowing the Grip, Tilt and Wrist action? Thank Roger Beshens
As a padres fan I've got great respect for Bauer.. You're doing your part to better the game and its much appreciated. I really hope you're able to pitch in 2022. You deserve it buddy.

I started watching Trevor about two years ago, I’m in 7th grade now and I still finding myself coming back to learn more! (Of course, I love that because it makes me a better pitcher) These tips are great IMO!
Hi Trevor I’m a baseball novice but have a 6 yo and 9 yo kid doing travel baseball and they love it, so I’ve been trying to learn as much about hitting and pitching as possible to help them. I realize these are advanced pitching techniques so I don’t have any clips I can send yet of the boys employing these particular techniques but I just had to say your teaching is masterful!
I honestly don’t know too much about you other than you were always one of the first pitchers off the fantasy baseball board when I used to do that years ago and I would now and again see the occasional fiery media clip of yours which were always entertaining:) but I definitely wasn’t expecting this level of sophistication in terms of teaching technique. I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. I really think you should be teaching an advanced course at a university on mathematics (geometry) and athletics. Extremely well done, thank you so much!

I know I'm late to the party, but Trevor is a true competitor. He is showing exactly how he does it, while not worrying about the competition. It reminds me of Victor detailing his techniques for other bass players to learn how to become absolute monsters. Any MLB team that grabs him will be lucky.

God I wish TH-cam was around when I was in little league haha I was always pretty decent hitter and I definitely read all the books but this was way better explained then anything I read.

Crazy how he knew this. We just recently figured out about seam shifted wave, the fact that throwing a slider with a 2 seam grip will cause more break because of the asymmetrical seams. Dude is revolutionizing.
Giving back to the games like this is something the special players do. He is really a player that young kids can look up to, and that is just about the best thing a player can ever do.

I had massive reconstructive spinal surgery at 13 years old (9 discs removed and replaced with rib bone, 2 18" rods and 180 staples). However before that I was rocking a 50% strike out rating. I love the slider because I was able to keep my arm speed about the same as my fastball or at least better than my curve or change. Man that pitch is so effective if thrown but for me was harder to throw as consistent as my curve ball.
13 is such a great age to pitch. You're old enough that you can start throwing hard enough to get effective breaking balls, and also a LOT of kids at 13 are going through growing spurts, which messes with their hand eye-coordination enough that a lot of them have a really tough time at the plate with a good pitcher.

Bauer is so good for baseball. I wish he was around when I was In high school. I could bring the smoke in the mid-ninties...but my curveball and off-speed stuff was absolute centerfield "hit the bull/get a steak" trash. I actually balked at a tryout in St.Louis because of it.

Given a certain force that is constant, the torque/moment on the ball will be greater on the outside edge of the ball as opposed to close to the center because torque = force x distance (if the force is 90 degrees to the radius of the ball). Since torque = (moment of inertia of the ball) x (angular acceleration) and moment of inertia stays the same, the angular acceleration must increase to maintain equality. Assuming you are imparting the force on the ball over the same time and that it is a constant force, the angular velocity must be greater if the force is exerted on the outside edge of the ball. This means you can get the same angular velocity from less force if applied to the outside edge as opposed to near the center.

I developed this pitch on my own thru lots of trial and error. My thumb is on the seam, but I hold it loose. I grip the seams the same way and also deliver the most pressure with the index finger. Mine is not pro - it gets rocked in old guy rec league. But I do get a lot of pop ups and a lot of grounders to short and third.
Making rec hitters hit a pitch that both moves away from righties and a little down is an extra challenge for the hitters. When I get late break, it is better. When I keep it low, it is better. When I make righties extend outside on their swing, I get easy flies to the right side. Inside pitches makes them hit fouls by third and gets me to two strikes.
For lefties, I like to jam them. Grounders to the right side.
When my pitch breaks over the middle of the plate, and a little up, it gets hammered. I don't give a crap. I'm not that good at location. I just don't want to walk people. That is what the 7 guys behind me are for.
I have to throw this pitch (it is my only pitch) because my fastball tails in to a righty and is always high. My big drawback is that I usually have to give up speed to get control. I am still working on this.
For me to throw harder and still keep control, the key for me is a loose grip. When I master the release point, I can get full power and still throw strikes. But that is hard. Every game, I throw a great pitch.
And a whole lot of bad ones. The worst ones are high because I release too early. When I release too late, it is in the dirt and usually gets past the catcher. Doing some of this, I then slow it down to find the zone. But that gets me called strikes as the hitter is expecting a faster pitch. So I also change speeds when I can.
Anyway, pitching in an older adult rec league is hard. Not too many guys can throw strikes. HItters have seen a lifetime of pitches and they put the ball in play.
The greatest feeling is when I throw a really good one, the batter swings and misses. And is looking at his bat and talks to himself as he walks back to his dugout.
The worst is when it doesn't break, its down the middle, and gets hit to the fence and the runners are running all over the place. I need to keep working on it to master it. I'm 61, so I still have a little time.

I haven't followed baseball since the strike back in 94. I know, that was a long time ago but I loved baseball. Used to practice when I could and even learned how to calculate ERAs before the internet. With my son learning the game, he's 6, I decided to learn a few things with the hopes he learns to love something that requires true effort. I have no idea why I’m watching this. I’m 33 and haven’t had a live AB since high school but I always loved pitching. I have a sneaking suspicion I can throw harder now than I ever have before but I’m not sure since I don’t have a radar. Would be interesting to see how I would do now days. But here I am learning his technique for no good reason. Haha

This is what sets him apart from other big league pitchers. He sees the science of it and tries his best to understand it to benefit himself. It almost seems like he’s obsessed and I love to see that passion. I’m a White Sox fan but Bauer is quickly becoming my favorite player.
