Little does he know that the sound guy on the video crew is none other than Hall of Fame pitcher and four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux in disguise. When asked about his best performances, Maddux referenced a random early 90's game in St.Louis. I was about 15 minutes late to this game with my dad and little brother. It was the top of the 3rd already and Maddux had a sub 2 hour complete game. Simply masterful.

Crazy part is that Maddux knew the ball wouldn’t leave the field just by the sound the bat made.
You get used to the sounds. If you pitch bp for a few days you can call homers and pop outs just from the sound with 90% accuracy I'd guess.
He's faced over 20,000 batters in 23 years of the majors alone. He's had his fair share of practice 😂

I like how for Kris he never gets annoyed at how good the "sound guy" is, and he turns from it just being casual to really having a lot of fun. Guy definitely enjoys the game immensely.

If this was Maddux in '96 he never would have touched those pitches. Maddux was an animal.
Maddux was putting 1-2 ERA's in the steroid era. Absolutely no offense to Bryant but hardly anyone on the planet could touch prime Maddux

He would have been able to touch those pitches... It just would have been a dribbler or weak fly ball. He's not a strikeout guy, he didn't have untouchable stuff. He was a master of pitching to contact.
He did both. I know his K/9 is middle of the road and he amassed a lot over 23 years, but 10th all time in Ks is nothing to scoff at.

People keep using the "3-0" row, which only looks at plate appearances that ENDED on a 3-0 pitch.
Maddux had a few intentional walks where he actually threw a strike during the plate appearance.
First Last not really an intentional walk if he throws a strike.
@@dougfreeman5503 It's not uncommon to try to pitch around a guy instead of intentionally walking him by just throwing stuff in the dirt or way outside and hoping he chases them. You get one strike but then the count goes to 3-1 and then the manager tells you to just walk him.
Also, there might be a runner on first and third with one out so they pitch to him hoping for a double play but then the guy on first steals second so they go ahead and walk the batter to again setup the double play.
In other words, not all intentional walks are 0-0 count and 4 straight balls.

Maddux was simply brilliant, and yes, he looked like an accountant. As a kid it was easy to watch him and imagine myself in his shoes, because he wasn't 6'4", 220#, throwing fire. Just incredible variation and control of velocity, savvy pitch selection and perfect location on every pitch. What a joy to watch him back in the day.
His pitch location was second to none. It would literally curve into corners of the strike zone. Just scary. Like it was a video game.

He was known to be a legendary prankster in the club house. Chipper Jones has a few stories of how Maddux pulled off some crazy pranks in the club house when he was with Atlanta.
I love how even before he knew who it really was he could tell how talented the guy was and was really having a blast hitting off him. He didnt want to stop!

Greg was never that type of pitcher. He didnt have "lights out" stuff or an overpowering fastball. He was really smart and understood changing locations and speeds in the strike zone. One of the best I ever watched growing up in the 90s.

Greg Maddux was an incredible pitcher for about 20 years from the late 80s to the late 2000s. He's widely regarded as the smartest pitcher who ever lived. He knew and could predict things in ways other pitchers never have before or since. To be clear, it's not normal. Maddux is an exception.

I’ve watched this about 20 times and I love how quick Kris goes from “No, I don’t want to like…… no” to hyper competitive “Alright ONE MORE”x5
He went from a normal mundane practice to being excited by a challenge, confused by a random guy throwing pitches that he couldn't hit the way he was used to in practice. Showed his competitiveness and love for the sport/game/challenge. He went from being the king of every schoolyard game to being seriously challenged in a scenario that felt like any other schoolyard game in every other aspect. Amazing exhibition of a mental shift due to circumstances being outside of normal bounds for someone as accomplished and accustomed to greatness as him, showing a sudden extreme shift in mental engagement that you rarely get to closely see from extreme performance level individuals.

This is a great video, my favourite part though is how Bryant goes from being the big leaguer who is “in charge” to being like an awe-struck kid when Maddux reveals himself.

and start pitching" - well, this gentleman is the embodiment of just what that means.
I played and worked through to MiLB level. I've heard that a fraction of the number of times I've heard "stop pitching and just play catch." 🤣
Maddux was the best pitcher of his generation. I've never seen a pitcher more consistently control a game than him. Other guys had better stuff and arms, but were not as good a pitcher as him. He was simply brilliant.

Greg Maddux not getting 100% for the HOF is why the rules changed. Any writer who did not vote him in or moreover didn't vote at all is now exposed. Great move by the baseball HOF.
A rule change was LONG overdue. Nolan Ryan didn't get 100% when he went in back in 1999. If being the all-time leader in strikeouts, pitching 7 no-hitters & winning a World Series with the freaking Mets of all teams doesn't earn you an unanimous vote, something is wrong with the system.

Baseball HOF is more about the writers thinking they're better than the game and the players. Some guys simply didn't vote for players on their first ballot, regardless of who they were. There should be 50 players in the HOF with 100% votes.

MLB needs more pitchers like Greg Maddux today and less 6'8" ogres who throw nothing other than 100 mph fastballs.
Too many meathead coaches think size is all that matters. There were 4 inner circle HOFers (ignoring the BBWA) from his era: Maddux, Clemens, Unit, and Pedro. Somehow two of those guys were "undersized" to be pitchers. Maddux wasn't just a pitcher. He was an athlete. Good at hitting, fielding, and even running. He did it all. He wasn't a pitcher. He was a baseball player.
@@robloxvids2233 It's also worth mentioning that when I was a kid, one of the things I liked about baseball was the fact that you DIDN'T have to be big to play.
With basketball, only tall players can play, so I ruled out basketball at a very young age. If baseball is going to go the same route and force players to be gigantic, they are going to lose 80% of their farm system (young talent) because people will give up on baseball early and pursue athletic careers in other sports where height doesn't matter.
The NBA doesn't even have a minor league system because their talent pool is so shallow.

Maddux is 51 and not even using the proper technique...He's not even lifting his leg during the delivery and Bryant is still having trouble hitting it. Pure legend of the game! You young kids take notes on what "real" pitching is all about.
They dont make them like they used to. Mets fan till Rays came into the league, talk about talent thats old now. Would love to see the young studs of today bat against a prime Dwight Gooden or Pedro Martinez or Nolan Ryan. Man I love baseball.
