I moved to Atlanta in 1996... as a lifetime Cardinals fan, I would ask Braves fans about their team... most Braves fans told me they need better pitchers... I was astounded to hear that....lol
One of the greatest stats I ever heard on Maddux was his record on the road during his last 2 seasons of his 4 consecutive Cy Young award years. In 1994, he was 10-2 with a 1.37 ERA on the road, and in 1995, he was 13-0 with a 1.12 ERA on the road. So for 2 seasons, he was 23-2 on the road with an ERA around 1.25. That is absolutely gaudy! His season W-L & ERA's were 16-6 1.56 in 1994(strike shortened season), and 19-2 1.63 in 1995. Sick!
Maddux was amazing in that he never revealed to the press how truly brilliant he was. He perfected saying enough without actually saying anything. Perhaps as he gets further and further away from his playing days he will open up more and discuss his pitching philosophy and strategy.

I see that old footage of a Braves uniform with "MADDUX" across the back, and I suddenly become extremely nostalgic for the 90s. Watching Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz each night in tye summer, and Michael Jordan each night in the winter.
Greg Maddux is the reason I watch baseball. I was never a huge fan of the game growing up, but seeing Greg pitch was special even to a non baseball fan, and thanks to him I started following the braves. Now he still remains the measuring stick by which I judge every great pitcher, and I'm sure that will be the case for a long, long time to come.

It bothers me so much when you read about a prospect coming up and people say "His ceiling is limited, because he doesn't have 'Ace Stuff'". Greg Maddux didnt have 'ace stuff' either, and he's a top 5 pitcher of all time at the very least
You're confusing velocity with stuff. Maddux certainly had ace stuff. His sinker was a plus and his change was plus-plus. He also touched mid 90s with his 4 seamer when he came up.
“I just didn’t get outs.” That’s all you need to worry about. Not strikeouts or anything like that, just outs. The perfect game is 27 pitches, 27 outs.
The professor is the GOAT. 4 pitches that he can paint at any time all sides of the plate up and down side to side... It was a pleasure watching him in the 90’s.

He would beat hitters by making good pitches. Even he has always said that, and says that right here in this interview. It seems like outsmarting if you just MAKE GOOD PITCHES. He was the best in the world at location, movement, and change of speed. Only movement is debatable, but I say you got to give it to him, because he could move it any direction, and with uncanny consistency, which is different than just having the biggest curve or the bitingest slider.

After he retired, he talked a lot more candidly about how he approached the craft. He knew exactly what he was doing to hitters and it was NOT as simple as "make good pitches".

Greg Maddux was the essential professional pitcher who showed he could win consistently without really throwing hard. He's a sure bet HOF in 5yrs and it may be awhile before we see another pitcher like Greg Maddux. All young pitchers should watch and see how Greg pitched so consistently for so long.
Greg Maddux was always my favorite player even to this day. I was broken when he called for retirement. All my buds said that Clemens and Randy Johnson was the best, of course Power Pitchers. Maddux can make a 300. hitter look like one who meets the Mendoza line. He is the greatest Pitcher in the live ball era. I have him on my all time roster for greatest players.

If you were born between 1976-1988, had cable, and liked baseball, you were watching the Braves on TBS for sure. They had 4 legitimate #1 starters for almost a decade straight. Their offense was scary, and their defense was highly overlooked.
So lucky to be able to watch this man, Smoltz, Glavin, and Rocker pitch in the 90s. Just and unstoppable pitching lineup. The 90s Braves were so impressive. I remember watching the games with my granny, those were great years.

The Phillies had and (still have) Rhino, Utley, Chooch, had Raul So Cool and they have added both Youngs. Plus, the Phil's now have a deeper bullpen with Paps, Adams, Horst, Bastardo and Aumont, therefore resulting in better run support, run protection and just overall more wins.

A pitcher's defensive capabilities are an overlooked attribute of a pitcher's greatness (although they are very minor). So, I think the Gold Gloves do merit something. That defense up the middle is a big reason for his success. Not only his own defensive abilities but add in Beliiard and Andruw Jones and you had the best middle defense ever.
