      How does it compare to the A7R IV?

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For photo or video or both? I’ve yet to do a side by side comparison (I’m hoping to hire the A7Riv next weekend to do it) - but from what I know about both cameras and my experience with the Sony system over last few yrs, my personal opinion is that the R5 represents a better overall package. The A7Riv gives you the extra resolution in stills but the file sizes are massive for full res RAW - other than that the R5 is as good or better in most categories (Af, low light noise, speed etc.) has the better video capabilities (apart from 30min rec limit which A7Riv doesn’t have). R5 ergonomics interface and usability with the touch screen etc is better. At this point it’s really personal preference on what’s important to the individual as they are both outstanding cameras. Also price is a consideration because currently the Sony can be picked up for around 500-700 cheaper depending on which country you are in and if you are already invested in the Sony or Canon system that’s a big factor on cost too. Hope that’s helpful, I’ll try to get a full comparison vid out ASAP as lots of people have asked this q.

      @@cameracravings3216 That's a good question. I would say I am a hybrid shooter, but heavily stills biased. This R5 saga has been ongoing for a while now, at first I reacted quite strongly about the overheating issue. To me, to pay US$4K on a supposedly top-of-the-range camera that overheats, knowingly, is simply insane. But, now that Canon has launched their latest R5 firmware update version 1.1, it seems like some of the issues have been alleviated.
      So, if I take away the overheating issue from the equation, the more reviews I watch on TH-cam, the specs of the R5 are actually pretty legit. To be honest, all along I have been leaning towards the A7R IV from the standpoint as a birder and to me those rationale are still valid:
      1) With the A7R IV's sensor being so high res, it can actually allow me to shoot it in APS-C crop mode to maintain maximum reach without having to touch teleconverters. The R5 is just not high res enough, in crop mode all it can manage is 17 MP while the A7R IV will still give you 26 MP allowing some leeway for cropping in. That to me is pretty key. I will be coming off an APS-C DSLR body. Essentially, I have been shooting with the Sigma 150-600mm effectively at 960mm wide open most of the time. It is very hard having to walk back that reach when shooting a full frame. With the R5, I would have to pretty much shoot with a 1.4x TC permanently. And as you know, TCs are usually recommended to be used on primes and not zooms, so I am a little allergic to TCs.
      2) Lenses. If I were to go with the R5, since I don't shoot with huge primes, I would have to go with the RF 100-500mm L zoom. Here is the problem, so right off the bat I would be losing 100mm without even touching the camera as compared to Sony's FE 200-600mm G lens. I just don't get it. Canon already has the EF 100-400mm II, why only just add on another 100mm and make a 500mm super zoom when they knew full well Sony, Sigma and Tamron were already at 600mm? In other words, it is just not a competitive offering. On top of that, it comes in the form of an inferior external zoom as opposed to Sony's internal zoom. Then, they want to charge you an arm and a leg for it, to be precise US$1.2K more than the Sony. So, pay more for less reach? The Sony is not a bad lens, it might not be a G Master, it is still a G lens and is arguably the best super zoom in the market right now.
      3) Last but not least, price point. The A7R IV over here in Hong Kong is US$1.2K cheaper than the R5 and once you add on the difference of the lens too? That is a total of US$2.4K. Is it really worth the difference though? I guess that would be the question I like to throw at you. I think for the body may be? But, the lens? No. It just feels like I would be forced into buying the RF 100-500m. So, net net, with the Sony package I would be paying substantially less with arguably a better lens which will provide me with the furthest reach.
      But, I get it, there is a lot to like with the R5. The animal eye AF might have already surpassed Sony and it has a faster frame rate with better IBIS. Plus, I prefer the look, the ergonomics and the menu of the Canon anyway. That's tough one. I think the wise choice is probably the Sony combo while the R5 is more like the trendy choice for now. Who knows if I don't pull the pin immediately, Sony might be announcing the A7R V come next year. That would open another can of worms. LOL.

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think you make some very valid points and particularly given the cost difference, for you it is probably better to go with the Sony combo... a couple of things worth considering, have you thought about adapting EF lens mount lenses onto R5? Could be a solution meaning you don’t have to spend on the RF100-500. Also the drive speed(FPS) the A7riv will give you vs then R5? (Maybe an important factor for you not sure what your current setup is giving you?) If you are planning on shooting full size RAW I think the Sony will only give you 6fps and then 10fps at the compressed raw and jpeg. Also I’ve been surprised how good the buffer depth and speed to clear is on the R5 and it’s nice to be able to access all the menus whilst it’s clearing (which Sony has always had an issue with) small things maybe but in day to day use it can become very frustrating. Agree with you that currently Sony is much better value for money in terms of camera and lenses and the fact that with the R5 to shoot to both cards you have to invest in the cfexpress cards which are $$$!

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some good points there. I don't have any problem with adapting to EF lenses But, here is the thing, Canon had always left out a huge gap in their lens line-up and that is they never had any super zooms. We all know the EF 100-400mm II is a great lens, but the only reason I don't have one is because I find it to be too short for birding which was why I had to go non-native and shoot with the Sigma 150-600mm from day one. In fact, a lot of amateur birders shoot with either the Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm for precisely that reason apart from price point. The only other EF long zoom Canon has is the EF 200-400mm f/4 with a 1.4X TC incorporated into the lens which costs as much as a huge prime, not to mention I find it to be too short anyway. There is just nothing beyond 400mm while Nikon has the 200-500mm and Sony has the 200-600mm. So, I guess what I am trying to say is sure I am willing to adapt to EF lenses, but there is just no super zoom for me to adapt to apart from the big primes, but that would be an entirely different conversation as we would be talking about US$10K+++ to 13K which I have no plans in spending that kind of money.
      By all accounts, mirrorless bodies do so much better with teleconverters than DSLRs, so may be it isn't that bad to start using teleconverters. But, let's assume it is perfectly fine to use a TC on both the RF 100-500mm or the FE 200-600mm since they are superior optically than the Sigma, so what is to stop me to use it on the Sony? Sure, I would be moving the goal posts, but the truth is I would forever have longer reach on the Sony no matter what. For the R5 combo, 500mm (from the RF 100-500mm) x 1.4 (from the TC) = 700mm. Whereas with the Sony combo, 600mm (from the FE 200-600mm) x 1.5 (Sony APS-C crop factor shooting the A7R IV in crop mode) x 1.4x (from the TC) will give me 1260mm. For starters, 700mm is already 260mm shorter than my current setup, let alone match it. Then, you look at the Sony's 1260mm, there is just no comparison to be had.
      Then, on the subject on how slow the A7R IV is when shooting in full RAW. My question is what if I shoot it in APS-C crop mode most of the time? That is only 26 MP as opposed to the full 61 MP, I am guessing it should speed up the camera massively in terms of frame rate as well as moving the buffer? That's just my educated guess. The only other way I would see myself taking a second look at the Canon more seriously is if Canon launches a high res version of the R5 like an R3 with 80 MP for example, that way I would be able to shoot it in APS-C crop mode. Or unless shooting a 2x TC on the RF 100-500mm with the R5 is perfectly fine and doesn't degrade image quality too much which I doubt. Or I do what pros do and shoot with primes and use TCs full time. Either way, if I go with the R5 package, I would have to make sacrifices, be it in terms of reach, image quality (if I use TC) or money (having to spend more).

    I am 3 years late but right on time. Thank you for this awesome video on adapting EF/EF-S lenses onto RF mount Canon bodies. I have an R6 MKII on its way for Christmas and can’t wait for its arrival Friday. I have also ordered an ND cartridge type RF adapter for my EF/EF-S lenses. I’m going to order the RF 50mm f/1.8 as my first RF lens. You have given me and so many others the peace of mind to purchase mirrorless cameras from Canon - thank you. I will do some testing with all of my EF-S STM lenses and let you know how they work. I have several EF-S and the single EF STM lens for my Canon 90D.
    Wishing you & your family a very blessed and safe Christmas Holiday season.

    I noticed on my brand new R5 that whenever the shutter speed is set to below 1/10 for example, especially below 1 sec (and getting worse the longer the shutter speed, especially at 30 sec), stuck pixels show up in the EVF, rear LCD and also a couple on images when taken. They show up without even taking a frame yet, immediately showing up when setting a slow shutter speed. It's only visible with a dark frame though, such as with the lens cap on.
    It disappears [in the EVF/rear LCD/sensor/image] when the shutter speed is ramped up, completely disappearing with shutter speeds of 1/10 or above.
    Not sure if this is a common problem or not, as there is mention of this here and there, but not specifically on the R5 on the internet...

  • @paulsophocleous2544

    11:52 I believe there are some third party lenses that were designed for the crop cameras but actually have an EF, not EF-S, mount. These lenses should allow the R5 to shoot with the full frame and won't force the crop. However, since these lenses do not produce an image circle large enough to cover the entire sensor, there will be completely black corners.

    What’s the biggest down fall of the r5? What’s the biggest pro for the r5? (Relating to photography)

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brian, hmm that’s a tough one. I think for photography this is a fantastic camera and probably the best all round experience I’ve had to date with any camera. The one let down for me was the dynamic range when trying to recover highlights on raw files. It’s just not quite as good in that regard as other cameras I’ve used. Other negatives are the cost of Cf express if you want to make use of both card slots and the lack of and cost of the RF lenses (although to be fair the ef glass adapts pretty flawlessly) and I suppose if you are buying this camera it’s already a big investment. Biggest pro is that it is like a cross between a 5d and 1DX, very capable for so many subjects (events, wildlife, portraits, sports etc.) and the eye and object tracking is first class.

    • @bpham2010
      @bpham2010 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Camera Cravings thank you for the great advice. How is it with recovering from shadows? With it being hard to recover highlights, would you suggest under exposing a stop or two and then boost exposure in post

    I'm in love with my new cam R5, just got it and tried only 1 day so far. Shot with my really old 70-200 2.8 non IS canon lense.
    Honest opinion so far (first test for stills photos),
    Upside that for me stand out so far:
    - Superb Eye AF (human) - Huge huge huge jump compared to EOS R
    - Feel of body and controls
    - Seems the metering readout is more accurate. Love the RGB histogram, I think that helps so much more.
    - Also compared to EOS R, the metering actually seems to be at the focus point. In EOS R, the metering is ALWAYS at the center.
    Downside but really not downside too much, more like things to improve:
    - Animal eye AF not as superb as human, it does detect but seems slightly laggy if compared to human.
    - Old battery (I have 4 of the old 5dmk3), drain fast. Have to check. I did put the freaking VF to highest res. Not sure if IBIS also causing it. Will check.

    Hi sir. My question is if we use 1.6x crop mode on eos r or eos r5 with ef and rf lenses, will the cameras reduce image quality ? Is 30 or 45 megapixels become less than usual ?

    • @cameracravings3216
      @cameracravings3216  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - On the EOS R I believe the crop mode gives you 11.6mp and on the R5 it’s about 17mp. The quality is still good but it’s cropping in on a smaller portion of the total sensor size so less data as a result.

      Currently keeping the Canon, but probably going to sell it once the A7siii arrives (which I’ve preordered). Want to test that camera then make a decision on which system to stick with. I think I will make a video on it once I’ve decided. I really love shooting with the R5 for stills but for video it’s got some pretty major compromises at the moment. Also if I move systems, I’d need to then buy a second canon body, which at the moment due to price point would mean and R6 or R neither of which I’m fully convinced about. Other thing holding me back is the eye watering prices of the RF lenses (although I could pick up some 2nd hand ef to add to my existing 24-70mm) and the fact that Sony is no doubt going to announce the A7iv soon. It’s tricky at the moment due to covid knowing what my needs will be for work moving forward, so taking my time over deciding and trying to test as much RF lenses by hiring them (and making YT videos about them) so that I can make a proper informed decision. Basically my credit card is taking a hit for now 😂

  • @hartmut-wilms

    Hi, I’ve just come across your video now, so I am a bit late. Nevertheless I hope that you may find some time to answer my question. It is about switching from Sony to Canon. I am owning the A9 and A7R IV, so Iguess that technically I would stay on par when switching. However me switching is not about technical features - although I do not want to downgrade here either ;-) - but rather about usability and ergonomics. In my opinion the Sony cameras are not usable without a base plate such as the RSS ones. How about the R5, is there enough room for a full average male hand on the grip? Even with a plate, the Sony does not feel right, especially the A9. What do you think about the R5? Next up is the display. This is a thing of the last century regarding Sony. I am constantly experiencing situations in which I am in need of a flip screen. In addition the quality of the Sony Display is bad. Often I am not able to judge my composing on this screen. Is the R5 screen any better, besides the obvious touch features (shame on you Sony)? Last question is about the buttons and the joystick. Some say that the joystick is in an awkward position. What’s your take on this? How about reaching (the right) buttons, especially when not looking a the back or the top? Thanks for your great video and for your time.

      Hi, thanks for watching and the question. Coincidentally I have had a similar question via email this morning, so I think I will be making a video discussing the merits of each system soon and why I am either staying with Sony or switching to Canon (I have yet to make a final decision). Answers to your questions below:-
      1. Hand Grip - I have fairly small hands, but my whole hand fits on the R5 grip without any additional battery grip or plate. Its definitely better than the older Sony grips, will have to compare to the A7siii when mine arrives.
      2. Screen - Yes I agree the Sony screens haven’t been great and yes the one on the R5 is a big improvement for me. The resolution is decent (I think its 2.1m dots vs the A7Riv 1.44m dots) and its also larger which helps. But having the touch functions and flip Vari angle is the biggest help, I especially loved using it on a recent commercial product shoot, where I was doing a lot of flat lay style shots and it made composition easy compared to my Sony (I did an experiment during that shoot using both cameras side-by-side and seeing which one produced the better images, I’d say image quality was comparable, but I just kept reaching for the Canon, as it was a joy to work with). The touch functions in menus etc is comparable to a smart phone in responsiveness I’d say.
      3. Buttons and Joystick - I’d say that the Canon has really good button placement and I find my thumb rests nicely on the af-on button (which I have set to back button focus) for me the joystick is a bit of a reach, but as I said above I don’t have large hands for a man. I think overall its a good layout on the back. One thing I miss from the Sony’s is the dial on the front of the grip, which the canon r5 doesn’t have, its on the top at the front instead. Overall it has taken a bit of time to get used to but its all pretty intuitive. The other thing that Canon have done well in terms of ergo is the camera has all rounded edges, which make a difference for me when shooting for hours on end with it. I always get a sore bit on my hand from the Sony’s from the slightly square corner of the camera which I haven’t got with the R5.
      I hope the above is helpful, a lot of it is personal preference to an extent, so I’d recommend going to a shop to hold or trying to hire and use the Canon before buying if you are able to. Also as I said, because of the volume of questions I’ve had on this sort of topic I’m going to try to do a video or livestream covering this stuff in more detail, once I’ve had some time using the A7Siii which hopefully will arrive today. 😀

    Hi Andy, I seen your video on how to adapt your old lenses to the R5. I kinda wanted the drop in filter and thought this would be a good feature, but after your great explanation of how it works and then I googled it and seen how much. We are talking 400 dollars for the drop in variable ND and 130 for the clear filter(which seems crazy and expensive,) I don't really need/want a circular polarizer or a variable ND filter. I just want an ND filter. Have you looked at or tested these inexpensive ND filters for the cheap lens adaptor by Aurora Aperture?? They are only 55 bucks. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1496762-REG/aurora_aperture_pnd_rf_nd65k_powernd_nd65k_4_8_f_canon.html
    This seems like a much better alternative for someone with a wide angle lens or just needing to slow shutter speed/reduce light on a F1.2 lens wide open.

      Hi thanks for watching. No I’ve not tested anything like that yet, but it looks an interesting product. I’m wondering if you may lose autofocus as it doesn’t seem to say anything about retaining af in the description? Also obviously as you point out it’s a fixed nd rather than variable which are usually cheaper to make so cheaper and lastly I’m not sure what the nd quality of this brand is? I know from experience that cheaper nd filters usually have resulted in a drop in image quality for me. I may try to get hold of one to test and if I do I’ll let you know what it’s like (if you use one in the meantime let me know how you get on).

      @@cameracravings3216 As far as AF, I don't think it has an effect, possibly the versions that block the most light could have an effect in low light situations, but I would think no more than having a ND filter on the front of the lens. The great thing about this one ND filter fits all lenses you put on the EOS R adapter. On the AF front, this guy (Robert Hall) uses the ones for DSLR and flash photography and did not mention autofocus issue. th-cam.com/video/LltjDbMjdX0/w-d-xo.html
      My R5 is on back order. I canceled my $99 backorder EOS R Adapter because I was unsure whether I would get that one or more expensive drop in. $539 vs $ 155 I think I am leaning to the $99 adapter again with a ND filter from this company. Last update from BandH was I won't be getting my camera until the middle of next month.

You can download that for free on their website I think. I use the adobe suite of products, LR, PS etc. but I think the canon software should open the raw files.

      Hope it was useful. Yeah I think a lot of people are still waiting. Spoke to a big UK supplier yesterday and they said Canon can’t make/ship them fast enough. Hope you get yours soon, it really is an excellent camera. 😀

      Camera Cravings I think that it’s a solid camera, even with the overheating issues. I think consumers assumed it was going to be a cinema camera, but it sounds like it’s a higher end photography camera that can shoot 8K. I think the 4K HQ and 8K capabilities are bonus to how good the photography aspect of it is (from all of the reviews I’ve seen, including yours).

      Yeah TH-cam compression doesn’t do the 4kHQ any favours the 4K image out of camera is beautiful even in standard colour profile not C-log, this is the first video I’ve filmed entirely with the R5 for all the talking head stuff.
