In this tutorial I go through how to install Emulators and Roms on your Steam Deck in 2023 using the wonderful EmuDeck 2.1 Installer. I walk you through the process and if you follow these steps you'll be playing your favourite retro games in no time.

Thumbs up, I appreciate the effort. The process is straightforward and anyone with some computer knowledge should be able to do this as it is mostly self-explanatory. The tricky part is getting down the quirks of the specific emulatora and sometimes to run specific games. For advice on those topics you'll still have to sift through reddit and/or shady websites....
And therein lies the problem. Not many people make guides for people without any prior experience.

I’d love to see that advanced guide for some reason I can’t get wii to run on dolphin at all but GC is flawless.
I have some Wii games downloaded I mostly play Brawl as I can use a normal Controller layout but for other games that didn't use a gamepad there's way's to mimic the motion controls I can't figure it our for the life of me one day I'll spend an hour or 2 messing with that.
Question: When I drag and drop the roms to the deck from my external harddrive, do I need to have them in folders named ROMS, BIOS, ETC, or will the emudeck setup process know what it's looking for in that entire directory? I have a drive that has all of my games backed up, and separated into folders named for each system they are for. Do I need to change that?
I tried this a few months ago and it worked like crap. Gave up on Emulation on Steam Deck. Really looking forward to giving it another go with this video when I get the chance some evening this week.

This tutorial helped me a lot. I had a problem when it comes to my transferring the files needed to my steam deck, as I don't have any docks. So instead, I used KDE Connect to transfer my files flawlessly from PC to my Steam Deck. One problem I had is the audio. I have my SNES roms and then, when I played a game it sounds muffled or crackling sounds. Any fix for this?
If your micro SD card isn't being detected, or won't format on your steam deck.. Insert the micro SD card into a PC and format it there using 'NTFS' and then insert it back into the steam deck. Then EmuDeck should be able to read it.

After I plug in my 128gb USB C Flash Drive and click "Create BIOS and Roms Folders" it still says "Creating EmuDeck Folders". I have the option to select Skip For Now or I can wait. Should this prompt me and does it normally take awhile? What am I doing wrong???
I have EmuDeck installed in SteamDeck and play games from the Emulation Station. The PSP games work pretty well for me, but the GBC games have terrible sound and run really slow. Similarly, games from the GBA and NDS do as well. Could someone please advise me what this could be? Is there anything special I need to set up to emulate older handhelds?
can you not just use a USB C flashdrive to transfer the games over? or does it have to a USB A with an adapter
My thumb drive is not creating the bios and roms folder with the wizard on steam deck. So what do i do get a new thumb drive??
For Xbox 360 we don’t need a bios to play but my game won’t start even though I converted my Xbox 360 games to iso
I think its too difficult to get it to work. Following instructions I run into problems. First my memory cards are not named primary and external so that is confusing. I spend my gaming time trying to get it to work and it still don't work. I do have a game that works on my pc but when copying it and the bios over to steam deck it shows to not have the bios and the game has a question mark on it.
So i just followed the video and after finishing i go to select a game i added and nothing loads??? Im not doing anything fancy just NES, GENESIS, SNES games and the images show up in my menu but i hit Play and none of them load up. Please any help??
I made it to the last step and it detects my roms and chooses artwork when I parse, but when I click "Save to Steam" it says "Fatal Error" the error being that "the shortcut.vdf file is corrupted" any tips please? Thank you...
This isn't working for me. when I download the emudeck installer, it's listed as an unconfirmed download. Yes I moved it to the Desktop

I have a ROM dump of Smash Bros 3DS which I've tested on PC and I know works 100% but on Steam Deck the game freezes on the character selection screen and force closes to the desktop. I installed through emudeck so it's the latest Nightly build.
Does the game just not work on Steam Deck?

Is there a way to turn off autmatically save states and save state loading upon launching a game. Trying to play mame games and it just freezes with a previous save state

Needed help for sorting out roms as in is there a way to know if a certain mame rom is of which year ? Emudeck has more then one mame roms folder
I still cant figure where each file goes. i assume its to be non zip so uncompressed? I've gotten psp gow games to work thats about it. Nothing else so far.

No just keep them on the SD card they don’t have to be downloaded on the internal storage
tutorial for formatting the SD card? Emu deck doesnt recognize my SD Card. going on their site it says "SD Cards need to be formatted as ext4 (or btrfs) to be compatible with EmuDeck." Idk what either of these are, when I go to format the SD card I have the option of NTFS and exFAT. Currently its in NTFS
Format it from the Steam Decks own way in the settings.
You don't need an external hard drive, just copy roms into a proper folder on your card from any source

I fixed this issue by reinstalling everything. I had previously installed emudeck half a year ago and haven’t updated it until now. I deleted everything and reinstalled it like how this video tells you and now it works 👍

Ideal Example scenario: I want all Pokemon ROMs saved to steam library-nonsteam games(via Steam ROM Manager). However, Id want full GB, GBA, N64, GameCube, Etc. libraries accessible through Emulation Station.
Yes, it’s super easy I actually forgot to mention it in the video. You just click on each boxart and it’ll be greyed out. Then that game won’t show in your steam shelf.

Basically any JSAUX model that fits your budget :) can be some long shipping but definitely worth it. I have many videos up where I test a few different docks :)
if you want super cheap and works great but isn't a dock i bought "SABRENT Multi Port USB C Hub with 4K HDMI | Type C Power Delivery (60 Watts) Port | 1 USB 3.0 Port | 2 USB 2.0 Ports (HB-TC5P) " and a standard like 7 dollar plain dock. it worked better then the official steam deck dock

But why does everyone use a usb can I not just download the rom and move it to the file on the deck itself evey video it’s a usb but I don’t have one and seems like a hassle to have to get the roms separately and move them after instead of just doing it manually on steam deck

Yes you can indeed just download a rom and move it to the roms file in your ssd and it just works just load it up and in the emulator and it should work I did it with the ds one for Mario bros and it worked fine didn’t need any extra files but not sure for any others
@@quartzfae if you mean roms just look up roms and multiple sites will appear most work fine I never use a vpn just don’t be dumb and click something that’s obviously fake
@@SpaceAlienTTV ty, yes i was able to do that but i want to put it in my steam library how the op has theirs listed by console in their actual library rather than having to load up the file in desktop mode
@@quartzfae ya I just downloaded the rom unzipped it and moved it into ssd and where the emulation is and moved it to whatever emulator I needed and loaded it up in gaming mode and it worked fine no issue

Question, it asks me to install proton 7.0 when trying to use wii u games, what's that?
You need to run Cemu.exe (the emulator) in compatibility mode and select proton 7 from there. It's in the properties settings. If you right click cemu in Steam.
For switch emulation on SteamDeck, which one runs better, Yuzu or Ryujinx?😁
They perform different for different games. Personally I prefer Yuzu but both are good.
yeah thats game depended as both offer different performance in each game. so i use both of them
If you are trying to play tloz tears of kingdom I recomend Ryujinx I use it and it runs perfect
When trying to add the xci files to my usb it says the file is too big for the filesystem, how do i fix this?
You need to format your USB into exFAT.

Went through the whole process to play breath of the wild and can’t find bios stuff. No clue what I’m looking for.
It’s not bios for Wii U it’s keys. You have to use google for that I’m afraid.

@@matthewmatyszczak1024 I’m sorry, I accidentally answered another question. Regarding yours, it’s easy. Just use the Emudeck installer to install ps2/ps3 on your first sd card. Then redo the installation and install switch etc on that card instead. You will have all the folders etc on both cards but you’ll only drag n drop games for the systems you want on each card.
In short. Yea you need to install Emudeck on both cards.

The emulators are appearing in my collection but not the games would we happen to know what is causing this (I’m using internal storage)

My Cemu won't boot in ES says error and ask if it's installed. Have you seen this ?
You need to add your keys to the correct folder.

Totally agree! These are really good videos about how to install EmuDeck or another emulation system. However, none of these videos explain how to get the videos games or how they are called ROMs within the Steam Deck.
You say easy mode, but easy mode is downloading games directly from your steam deck without external hard drives, and downloading roms straight from the deck. theres not one video out here to help me

Well theoretically you should be able to download roms via browser then just copy them from your download location to the SD card formatted with emudeck, will check it when I get a decent SD card

Strictly speaking, unless you own the phyical game you cant legally download and intall it hence you wont ever get anyone streaming and giving a link but literally just google, theres plenty
