Hello Clifford. I have always wanted and now bought a GL1500.......what a beautiful bike. I did the usual youtube search looking for help and found your channel, your videos are excellent and cover pretty much all the questions I had. The videos are clear, well explained and very helpful. Thank you so much for doing these, looking forward to many more in the future.

My dad was school bus mechanic, that taught me to clean every piece & areas being worked on! Cleaning everything drove my friend Harry nuts that never had time by the hour wages! This is what my dad would do: take rear side cover off, clean side cover, clean an check rear brake fluid level, small grease on side cover mounting pin rubbers gromits, he'd continue to check reverse cable, lube cables, then he'd clean front cover an grease rubber mounts, inspect front pins on front cover because they need pushed backwards to remove, an often pulled incorrectly pulled forward an broker! After taking care of whole uncovered area, then he would start on oil change procedures! Same for under front oil filter cover, he would have cleaned cover while it was still in his hand from removal, then clean horn an inspect horn wires, clean all under cover area, then remove filter! You must choose your own path, grasshopper! But my bikes looks different an cleaner after service work! Second dad's rule: never set parts or tools on vehicle project unless laid on service mat or towel! 3rd dad's rule: treat everything with thoroughness, like our own kids are going to be in it all day, everyday!
Man i apprrciate the great detail and visuals as im not mechanical inclined. Tho oil changes are easy haha. But for me I'm a new used gold wing owner. GL 1500 like yours. And I'm learning how to do everything thx to you sir. Ill look fwd to following and passing on your videos Clifford/Cliff. Have a good day my Gold Wing Consultant. Thank you. 👍👊✋

When you have plastic side covers an lower off, good time to clean up all parts and areas exposed! My friend Harry worked too many years on the clock to clean up anything, an I drove him nuts cleaning everything before assembly!
If you want to get all the old oil out, while you have the drain plug out, just run some clean oil through it and it will flush your pan. I have done this on bikes and all my cars. You can use a good dino oil if you think you are wasting syn oil. You will be surprised at the crap that comes out and run some until its clean, usually a few ounces. BTW, I am a retired HD Police bike mechanic-just thought I would pass that on.
I run 15-40 rotella.this oil runs in a diesel/semi engine under extreme conditions,it worked very well on my gl1200 and vt1100 shadow.however,it was to heavy for my magna and you would think it would be okay on that high rpm bike.i heard many talk about the synthetic version of rotella but some guys claim it is to slick for the clutch friction plates.in my magna I use 10-40 Valvoline bike oil and it does well.***ebay shows that the wix 51356 filter is not compatible.seems strange since it appears you have used it w/no problems.****i found the fram filter # it is ph6017A.
Rotella T6? I love that stuff, used on my other bikes, lawn tractors etc. Even my Ninja ZX10R. I’d like to think if it’s good enough to be put into Super Sports, then it should be ok for a Wing.
WIX Filter 51358 which, ironically, is the same filter my Kawasaki Vulcan 650 S takes. As of end of 2023, costs about $15 at Oreilly's 3.9 quarts with filter.
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Luciano Kendall I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.

Just fyi that oil isn't jaso ma specified which means it's not compatible with wet clutches. This can lead to issues with clutch slippage due to friction modifiers. Marvel Mystery Oil also isn't compatible with wet clutches by their own website.
I have never removed that front panel to get to the filter but for this video it was very good. I do have a belly pan that I have to remove to get to the filter. Let me ask you this, have you ever put MMO in your gas ? I do from time to time and when I do I get better gas mileage. I think the MMO keeps the fuel system clean and lubes the valves.
Hi Cliff, thanks for the video.Im going to be looking @ 97 Wing 1500 SE on Monday with 58,000 miles on it of a private owner. I subscribe to your channel thanks for the video.
Honda Goldwing 1200 limited edition only start in neutral and shuts off when put in gear. Any videos or comments on this issue? All my friends love your videos!!!
Great video it was very helpful! I haven't run my Goldwing for 4 years. I need to change the battery, change the oil if l drain the oil can I switch to synthetic oil? I was also thinking about putting some WD 40 down spark plugs?
You need to use JASO-rated motorcycle oils as they do not contain any friction modifiers that will encourage the clutch to slip. This is critical for proper clutch operation. MA/MA2 rated oil must pass a clutch friction test. These newer (as of 30 years ago) car oils are basically too slick for wet clutches.
Hey Clifford what's the thing in front of your gas cap I know it's got something to do with fuel but I'm not getting fuel up there so I was wondering if that would be something to look into thank you
Cliff, been watching your videos lately. I want to know if have have rode an 1800 and if so do you think it has more power and better ride, are they the same as far as basic characteristics, what was your preference? Thank you for the GW videos.
Nice video, have a question and sorry for this but after to many years away from motorcycles I just got a Honda Gold Wing GL1500SE 1999 50th Anniversary and just to be sure, is this oil also used on car engines! Because all the guys I ask their answer is that has to be oil for motorcycles, your comments are very important for me and all others thanks and keep On Biking!
Mario, people say that because there is an additive in car oil that can cause you wet clutch to slip. I use Shell Rotella 5-40 syn diesel oil and it does not have that additive. Many many Gold Wing riders use Rotella it seems to be the favorite.
A couple of things. You should really wear gloves as used engine oil is quite nasty stuff, also, if the oil is hot when you undue to drain bolt, it won't burn your hands if you get some on you when undoing the drain. The oil will drain a bit quicker if you undo the oil filler cap before you start to drain the oil. Finally, I know you probably did, but it is important that you clean the mating surface where the oil filter fits. Thanks for this, enjoyed watching it.
Good video. You didn't mention why you're using the high mileage variant of Mobil 1, which is important. For those who may not know, the high mileage oil, in addition to diesel oils, do not have the friction modifiers which are bad for wet clutches. The way to know for sure is if the API service donut label does not say "Resource Conserving" then it's safe in motorcycles.
Mainly because it's a video on how to change oil for the goldwing. Not about the oil I used, even though i did briefly touch on it. I just didn't want get off topic to much, because that's easy for me to do and its already a 20 minutes long video.
@@CliffordRice Well, the Goldwingdocs guy recommends the same oil as you did. He recommended using Sea Foam to get rid of the crud that builds up down around the little arms that engage the reverse gear, from memory. Also, 3.9Qts =approx 3.7 liters for those of us in the metric world.
No reason to mix with full synthetic and id be afraid it thin out regular oil. Its got some specific uses tho like adding to gas for upper cylinder lubrication. Breaking loose seized engines etc.

Good job
Looking for a starter for a 1989 golwing
My 1998 GL 1500 radio stopped working. The radio is not powering up. Anyone knows why and what to do?
PS: It was working last year but I left it parked outside during the winter. I had to change the battery and right now the motorcycle runs good except the radio.
I was thinking of fuses but I can't tell which one is for the radio
can you link the oil, and filter from amazon?
i didn't buy them on amazon, just went to the local auto parts store.
Best regards ftom México.
Excellent series of videos on the Goldwing as i just got my first one, however i noticed that you are using automotive oil , which i've been told forever that they don't contain the friction additives for the clutch like all motorcycle specified oils , so it might make it slip. Any issues with that? Txs Jeff
