Scotts steering damper installation on a BMW F800GS

  • When it comes to steering dampers, Scotts steering damper is nothing but top of the line, they make handlebars stabilizers for most if not all the motorcycles on the market, obviously that includes the BMW F800GS.
    Scotts product is a compact, fully adjustable hydraulic shock absorbing damper that mounts right under the F8ooGS handlebars and it helps control the unwanted wobble (tank slap) of the front wheel.
    The advantages of a stable front wheel are, a more precise steering, less fatigue due to arm-pump and an easier to control bike on rough terrain or sand. While the bike’s own suspensions take care of the vertical movements the Scotts steering stabilizer helps control the unwanted lateral movement. This is not just for off-roading, the benefit of having a stabilizer while riding on the asphalt include, a more stable bike under hard breaking and the reduce chance to incur into the infamous “tank slap” at high speed.
    The design of this damper makes it a breeze to transfer between bikes, equip all your bikes with the proper bracket and you can move the damper itself around with minimal effort eliminating the need to own multiple dampers for multiple bikes.
    I hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching.

    The most common reason for the head shake on this bike are bad Head bearings, I just replaced them on my bike and the head shake is gone for good! All balls racing makes the kit for the bike. Of the three 800s I have had two needed new head bearings!

      +Christopher Dempsey in my case I believe the wobble comes from the air flowing over the hand guards, cause if I have a 25 mph headwind when I'm doing 65 the handlebars wobble, or 20 mph wind and I'm doing 70, so it seems related to the air speed more than the ground speed . Also I removed the plastic cover from the hand guards and the wobble was gone, I guess I should have started with that , haha

      @@AlbesADV I think you are right about this. I have the touratech hand guards. After having my head bearings replaced it still had a slight wobble. I removed the hand guards and the wobble was gone! How is this possible? Is it just a bad design? I really liked the look of the touratech hand guards. Not sure what to do right now.

      A little push at the end of the handlebars has a huge effect, probably the only solution is to get a steering damper or get smaller handguards

    I have the exact same kit on my 2016 F800 GSA and recommend it for anybody going off road. It also took out about 90% of the steering wobble on the pavement.
    The Scotts is not cheap, but the fit and finish is first class and it simply works.

    Nice video & congratulations on reaching 300. I have a stearing damper on my list of 'wanted' accessories but never get tick off the 'needed' ones, the latest being new chain & sprockets, leaking front fork, the list goes on. I'm interested on the effectiveness of your little screen deflector, does it make a difference? What make is it?

      Hi there, I keep the knob right in the middle, and I adjust it on the fly depending on terrain. Low speed town ride, I keep it very soft, freeway ride I crank it up a bit, sandy trails I keep it on the hard side. On my last video in the desert you can see me adjusting it on the go.

    Noticed you did not re use the upper flat washer that sits between the rubber bushing and the stock lower bar mounts. But you did use the metal sleeve that fits inside the rubber bushings. Scotts instructions says to "discard all the hardware except for the lower cupped washer that fits over the rubber bushing", they go on to say "(no cupped washer on top)". I am guessing they are using instructions from a slightly different model or year as there is not a cupped top washer. The stock lower bar mounts have a recess identical to that of the scotts SUB mount metal bushing. This is confusing as all logic says to reuse the top flat washer and metal sleeve as everything is the same dimensions. Thoughts?

    • @AlbesADV
      @AlbesADV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need the cylindrical metal tube over the bolt to make everything fit snugly and prevent the rubber bushings from being overtighten, the reason to remove the top washer is because the receiving end of the damper bracket is shaped to accommodate the rubber bushing, also if you put the metal washer against the aluminum bracket, over time the aluminum will wear out because of the vibrations and the fact that the washer is a stronger metal than the bracket. I hope this help, it's difficult to explain without showing.
