What Makes This Song Great? "Stuck on You" FAILURE

  • In this episode we explore the music of the band FAILURE. Failure is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles that was active from 1990 to 1997 and from 2014 onwards. They are often compared to other alternative rock bands from that time that were similarly labeled as "alternative", such as Nirvana and Soundgarden, but are distinguished by their meticulous attention to textural sonic detail, inventive use of guitar effects and signal processing, and the overall expansive sound design of their later albums. Failure reunited in 2014.

the mackie/ADAT combo they used was extremely common in the 90’s. I’m pretty sure Jagged Little Pill was tracked with ADATs. Nobody making heavy music did anything that sounded half as good as Fantastic Planet with a project setup that cheap. But it’s the songwriting that really distinguished that album. Easily the most under rated rock album of the 90’s. I’ll fight anyone that disagrees.

Fantastic Planet is hands down one of the best 90's rock albums that a lot of people missed. I was completely unaware until a guy in my brother's band mentioned it in the early 2000's and I was completely dumbfounded that I missed it. If you're into Nirvana at all, you owe it to yourself to check out Failure.

I know I'm late to the game, I just discovered you channel a few weeks ago, and I have been binging.
Thank you Rick. I am a touring sound engineer, and have toured with dozens of pop and rock acts from about 2000 on.
Everything you say I nod my head in agreement.
This is one of my favorite records of all time. Every rock/metal/industrial band in the Chicago scene in the 2000s still listened to this record on heavy rotation. I have had the pleasure of meeting Ken once, but have seen him play multiple times. I could not tell you the year or the band, but he did a tour back in the naughts solo. His backing band were some kids who also opened the show (I think he produced their record). They knew the failure tunes note for note, like they wrote them with Ken. It literally brought my friends and I to tears. Cold hearted, gigging, touring, pessimistic musicians and pro techs, crying during the Nurse who loved me.
The reason I called... I toured with a self-produced band out of Milwaukee back in the day called Bender. The record was Jehovah's Hitlist. They recorded the entire record themselves in a warehouse, on Black-faced ADAT's, through a Mackie 32x8, just like ken did. I am biased, but I still think the record sounds amazing. I used to have a copy of the original mixes, before TVT got their grubby lilt hands on it and remixed it, it was even better. I highly recommend you check the record out.

It is kind of sad to see all other videos from this series having hundreds of thousands views and this barely one hundred thousand as of writing this comment. Come to think of it, it is relatively logical why Failure did not blow up in the 90s. They were somewhat different, excellent, but they lacked the star power. Would have been interesting though, to see them really big.
Anyway, I appreciate very much that you picked this band to make a video about!
