If you told 20 year old me - 20+ years later you will be watching a video of solo’d and mixed in real time multitracks from the Fantastic Planet sessions with the engineer/composer himself, I’d be speechless 😶

Ken Andrews They way you both touch peoples lives and emotions through not just the lyrics but also the unique sounds like encapsulate them is remarkable. Much like Fantastic Planet held songs that invoked feelings without words and at times I felt myself adding my own lyrics. You steal my feelings and show me I am not alone and that this is how you feel about them because they are yours as well. Your not just some cocky vocalist but in love with music in itself. Your highly intelligent and extremely creative with the selfless ability to share your love which puts you right there next to Trent Reznor. Your accolades are quite similar to Trent in a lot of ways and I hope to see you join the prestige known as “The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.” I am honored that you took the time to read my initial message and I just want to say thank you for being part of the soundtrack to my life. Gratefully listening since 1994. Peace Ken!

    Ken,
I have sung your praises as a musician and producer ever since I got my hands on my own copy of Fantastic Planet in 1996, including several of my producer friends. To me it's one of the greatest rock albums ever produced and was so different from what was becoming a very derivative rock music scene in the mid-late 1990s. Incredible just incredible. I lived in the country side of San Antonio about 4 years ago. Bought this CD after a review on a magazine talking about the bass tone of this album. I built effect pedals and worked on guitars. I was working as a dialysis nurse, waking up early, listening to this album at 3am in the way to work. Greatest time of my life. All of a sudden, I was deceived, hit dark times, moved back in with my parents, and then I got to really really understand the record. The lyrics, the setting, the claustrophobic feel yet optimistic outlook. It really helped. Now I’m a registered nurse, more free time and a little more $$$, I’ve finally invested in myself and bought an Apollo and constantly buying plugins and anything new that people are going crazy over in music. Thanks for your work and the fact your still giving everyone the tools for making their musical dreams come true.

When I met you at the Double Door on the "Never Say Never" tour, I intended to ask you specifically about the vocal mic on FP, because they sounded so close mic'd to my ears - it made for a very intimate sound - and it had been a source of debate and consternation with some of my pro audio peers - instead, I became a complete goon, which you were absolutely lovely about.

I gotta say I teared up a bit when I saw you working on a cassette multi-track...that's what I started with back in the day. Years ago I did some research on records made with a Mackie 8 bus and read interviews about your experience with it on Fantastic Planet. I still hold that up as an excellent example what can be accomplished with relatively cheap equipment. You guys really knocked it out of the park on that one. This video popped up on my TH-cam feed and subscribed instantly. Going to watch the rest of your videos. I'd love to see you do a mix with the masters video or any tutorials like that. Keep up the good work brother!

This is amazing and endlessly fascinating. Never thought I would get a chance to hear Ken talk about the old recordings in such detail and provide an in-depth demonstration of the tracks on a great FP song.
I would love to hear even more. I have to wonder if the band has worked out some kind of deal with Warner Bros. to own the original recordings, now that they've done a modern digitization of them...
One more thing, SUPER EXCITED for "Failure 1992-1996!" I admit that at first I thought it was live recordings, so this blew me away now that I know it will be the remastered albums. (Love live music, but... I prefer going to Failure shows for that. :P Come back to Lincoln, NE sometime!)
    P.S. Solaris 2014!!! YESS!!!!

Those raw tracks still sound incredible, you can tell it was all amazing performances with perfectly tuned and well setup instruments.

not sure about the "well tuned and setup instruments" but we had learned, by this point, to tune the guitars to the parts we were recording, and not just to open strings.

@@KenAndrewsMusic Thanks for the response bro :)
I meant that the most important part of a record is the actual performance and how you capture it, which seems to be flawless here.
the drums sounded incredible too, perfectly tuned and extremely well played and captured.
Fantastic Planet is one of my all time favorite albums!
You guys rock, I would love to see some vocal mixing tutorials too.

Thanks for another great vid! It would be great to see you break down something off Magnified and do your own mix of it with todays technology ( Small Crimes, perhaps). I always look forward to your content.

I still pop this video on every so often. Kinda like a refresher. As a drummer, and a at home recording “engineer”, I have always been curious about the drums on this album. Like what drums/snare/cymbals we’re used, and what your mic setup was.

Man, this is just great content! It's much closer aesthetically to the stuff I'm generally working on than most similar channels. If I had to choose any subjects for future content, I suppose I'd ask first about drum sample augmentation as though I use it, I still try to avoid it. I guess I'm looking for some insight on how to use it creatively rather than as a band aid, if indeed you generally employ it. Thanks for the videos, and I can't wait to see more!

Ken, love this content! my band has hard drives full of unfinished work from the early 2000's and now we're all a few states apart. The idea is to use TH-cam to document the process of bringing the mix to life. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge
