Updates: The Osmo Does live stream. Actually, the Hero7Black will lose connection after 1 hour of streaming, and after over 2 years, GoPro has NOT resolved that issue. The Osmo will go about 4.5 hours without shutting down. MOST everything talked about as far as the Osmo not being able to do... HAS been firmware updated and now does it. The Osmo is now being compared to the Hero9 because they keep upgrading the Osmo, rather than coming out with a new version each year. for 199$ the Osmo is Well worth it over the cost of a gopro. Just thought anyone watching this would like to know these things. The choice is still yours. ;-)
This was TREMENDOUSLY helpful. I need a new 4K camera and was see-sawing back and forth between these 2..... but I have decided now. Osmo Action - The dewarp functionality and the auto calculations for time lapses is what got me. Hopefully they will bring out the hyperlapse and night shooting modes soon.
Great comparison video. I think the Osmo Action did great for a first timer. I can't wait for the 2nd iteration where a few small things get ironed out like the "lag" of the viewing screens compared to what's going on in real life. I would honestly pick one up now but I'm in no need of one just yet. Hopefully DJI will listen to the customers and add a few other features like an external mic output.
Recently bought the DJI osmo pocket and am looking to expand my horizons with the DJI Osmo action. This was a very informative video. Perhaps next, you can do a comparison between the two DJI products to see the difference in them?
I’ve always liked go pro, was gonna buy an 8 or 9 , then watched lots of review vids , and seen some bad ones , of them freezing and having to remove battery to reset to continue recording , not good reliability,, as well as shutting down in very cold weather , working along side a DJI, so having watched lots of vids , seeing quite a few with problems , I went and bought a DJI , and have no regrets, after watching this video , I felt you were biased to the go pro , cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Seeing a pattern to DJI that I don't like - they push impressive technology out the door before working out all of its features, and even missing features that wisdom would say makes a better more competitive product. The Osmo Pocket had a glaring issue with external microphone (super expensive 3.5mm adapter, less-than-stellar in-camera audio performance).
Again if your aware of DJI and The drones you know the support for firmware is outstanding we went through the same kind of comparisons with the dji pocket. All the problems and they all disappeared with fireware upgrades. Let’s do this comparison is 6 months. The 7 has has the 5,6,and 7 to make all the changes.
hello both products are very good but for me they still have not convinced me to buy them since nobody says how to connect it to do FPV in drones you have to put a camera to make videos and take pictures and control everything from the control, apparently both manufacturers forgot users like me to see if you can do something, thank you.
How do you feel about the screen display delay while shooting in RockSteady mode? Is that something fixable with firmware or is it a limitation of the graphics power of the chip? As is, it's a deal breaker for me, despite the many strengths of the osmo.
I am a bikerafter. I want to put my camera at a point X, let's say a bridge, and set it to record after 15 minutes so I can go to back to the river, get ready, and paddle to the bridge where I wanna be recorded without wasting 15 minutes of battery and memory space. I can't do that super basic count-down thing with any of those cams. Right?
around 8:30 you said something about not having any problems about offbrand gopro batteries. i bought 3 of them from a chinese company (wasabi power i believe) and after about 5 months they were all 3 extremely swollen and puffed out. i threw them all out. they also got stuck and jammed in my gopro. the name brand battery it came with lasted about 10 months until it stopped working. the battery will last 10 minutes if i’m lucky. just wanted to make this known.
@@Noealz If you already own a hero 7, then its not worth the upgrade, its more geared towards first time buyers Im thinking about getting the osmo for convinience pourposes, ie, the front facing screen
Hi, thanks for the excellent review. Just wondering if there is any latest firmware update (as it's almost 6 months since the review) that has added value(s) to the Osmo Action.
The lack of an HDMI out on the Osmo Action is a deal-breaker for me. This is one of the GoPro's great assets (I use GP6's). An HDMI out is essential for connecting to a vision mixer for multi-camera webcasting. I await with interest GoPro's response in the GP8.
Neither the GoPro Hero 7 Black nor the DJI Osmo Action is an absolute run away winner, like the other Xiaomi 4K Sportcam I eventually choose GoPro overall as a better action camera but DJI Osmo has better software interface layout. All the key features on the GoPro is important to me but not all on Osmo.
Hi, I really enjoy your informative videos. I was wondering, is there a small case that allows people to keep the scroll wheel attached to the Osmo pocket, for carrying purposes? I can't find one and thought that you may know of one already available or one that is due to become available soon. Thank you for the videos and for sharing your knowledge.
@@AirPhotography GoPro is doing an Apple. Less user replaceable components. Same internals. Added modularity for additional money. Hero 8 is an all out money grabbing strategy before they go bankrupt. All the signs are there, they are facing a challenging time.
Just to activate it, you will. You can record and all that without internet. You can transfer videos directly from the Osmo to a smartphone via the DJI Mimo app and it’s faster and less glitchy as the GP.
Hero 8 should Be out in late September or early October. As for the firmware update for Osmo action To fix lag if it all is anyone’s guess. Hopefully soon though
@@AirPhotography Thanks, I think I will wait for the H8 (hopefully fix the freezing) & firmware update on DJI (for lag & screen switch delay). At least then the H7 & osmo will be cheaper too.
I have have a ton of problems with gopro batteries the software in the battery when battery is incerted it forces the gopro to turn on 5 seconds after you turn the camera off and it does that no matter how many times you turn the camera off also had issues with the gopro batteries when it wont alow you to upload your content to gopro when you change the battery to a aftermarket battery the camera stays off when you turn it off the wifi upload works fine when using aftermarket gopro batteries so I have had a ton of problems with gopro batteries that I dont have with aftermarket batteries and I have over 12 gopro batteries
Hello Antonio... I have same problems with the original gopro battery.... With aftermarket batteries there are not problems? Which aftermarket batteries do you use?
The Osmo has a better bit rate but it's still using the old H.264 codec. So at at the end the Gopro 7 wins hands up on image quality. That H.264 codec thing is probably the most disappointing point of the Osmo.
Thanks for this great video comparing both. I’ve got the Action recently and was sad to find out there are still some problems. Can you do a video on stabilisation when using ND filters? Would love to see your take on that. Thanks!
Yes I do have one in the works. I had a lengthy conversation with the owner of the freewell Who also makes ND filters And he gave me some really good information
Robert Miller this lack of batteries in stock is prob going to force me to get the GoPro as I have a mountain holiday in July and need extra time for recording and not having spares on launch is crazy. DJI chat have no information on when they will be available.
I have contacted dji twice and asked about this. Both times they insist third party usb-c to 3.5 adapters can be used with mics. Yet I’ve seen videos on here testing and it doesn’t work. It’s not filling me with much faith in after sales care if I was to buy the osmo action
You know I have to ask... Now that you had extended time with both cameras, which one would you pick if you had neither with the current firmware versions of each camera??
Osmo action only better dual screen, respon time (screen) and EIS stabilization, but GoPro Hero 7 overall almost better. (Live streaming,Voice comment, acsessoris, wide angle,HDR,timewarp, video quality, and any fiture).
I’m not quite sure what you mean? Are you referring to when I fill my videos with for TH-cam. If so I just use the stock camera app that comes with the iPhone.
I own both of those apps and have played around in them a little bit. I may use them in the future to film once I learn them a little more thoroughly 👍
Filmic Pro has a few more features (arguably the most popular filmmaking app), but the Moment app is more intuitive and you can also use for Photos. I have both too, but find myself using Moment more because of the easier controls and ability to flip between video and photo.
Yeah this seems to be a bug. The Osmo separates video files into 5 minute clips, so even if you record a 15 minute video, there will be 3 clips. GoPro does the same thing but I think the clip lengths are 8 minutes. There seems to be an issue of keeping the audio and video in sync when this occurs. This does not happen with GoPro. I’m sure they will fix this in a firmware update.
I just ordered the Hero 7 Black. I had the Omso Action and compared the video 4K quality to the Hero 4 Black. I was hugely disappointed by the noise, artifacts in grass and leafs and by some the overexposed parts in the picture. The footage is oversharpened and you can see always artifacts dancing around. The Hero 4 Black had a very natural looking sharp image without dancing oversharpenung artifacts and burned sky.
Out of so many popular reviewers, this one is by far the best and the most feasible comparison! Thanks a lot 🖖

Need 1 more time osma action camera review , coz it's been 1 yr nw
thank you for the comparison video. great information, format, audio and edit.
Personally I think the dji is better just because for the first action camera they already are hitting hard at the 7th GoPro
Per usual a great review. I have two Hero 7s and just one Omo Action for now; I am in no rush for another OSMO Action until I use it for awhile.
Two simple things disqualify osmo:
H264 will use two time more data than used by gopro h265.
View angle, especially superview is way better on gph.
I expect that I. Another 6 months, an update video will be needed. DJI will have software updates and maybe the Hero 8 will be out.
