      External Audio??? Can a lavalier mic plug right in and work via the usb c or do I need to purchase the DJI equivalent of the gopro mic adapter brick that NEVER works??

      @@Dcrainmaker You spoke about needing an adapter, however it not being available... does this mean we will have the same issue with the Gopro? a massive adapter that is $50 a pop and works 50% of the time? I heard you say it will be smaller but contacting DJI they literally were unable to give me any info on said "adapter"

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gromzen I talked to the DJI folks in charge of the adapter and they said it should be pretty similar to the OSMO Pocket adapter (which is tiny, but also hard and non flexible). So we’ll have to wait and see...

    Thanks, guy; good info. I think competition is great, I've been putting off buying a go pro for several years, hoping they would put a screen on the front side; well lo and behold DJ I did it so I bought it and I'm loving it so far. I'm sure other vendors are going to come out with lenses, just like the DJI screw-on filters. And firmware updates will add to the equation. And one more thing that I didn't particularly care about go pro was the fisheye look, I'm glad that now it's an option with the Osmo action. Again my friend thanks again for the pros and cons of both units, I'm glad I had patients!

Now I will move to this DJI camera because of its ability to work up to -10C and 4K+60fps+dewarp+rockstady. All these features are exactly what I need! Thank you for your detailed review.

    Really great comparison of the two, glad you shared the settings when you did comparisons. They seem comparable quality-wise, where I've seen other videos where the GoPro is totally soft, and it seems like people tanked the quality to make the DJI look good, especially when those same people normally produce amazing GoPro footage.

    Great honest look at the new Osmo Action. I have watched a few reviews with the 'Gopro Killer' tag but looking at the real world videos you took they are very similar in terms of stabalisation. You also mentioned some of the shortcomings too which a lot of reviewers (or are they more 'influencers') have glossed over or just not mentioned.
    Competition is good for everyone from a features point of view to pricing so I am happy that DJI entered the market but some less sensationalized reviews would be great.

    One thing all reviewers appear to miss with DJI kit is the lens glass durability. Mavics and the Osmo pocket are notoriously easy to scratch. I know the lens covers are replaceable but this is a major concern for me considering my GoPro lens hood is almost indestructible?

    I like the more natural look of the OSMO, detail & sharpness is Great! The mic is not bad either for a small action camera. Makes me wonder what Hero will bring for the 8? The Hero has a real competitor with the OSMO now.

    • @lynnewhelden
      @lynnewhelden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hero 8 already baked in design....so too late to "respond" to OSMO. They're probably all pretty bummed over at GoPro right now, realizing they've been one-upped for the next year at least.

    • @christopheradeler
      @christopheradeler 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lynnewheldenthat is true they better have thought ahead on the Hero 8. If the changes are minor Hero is in trouble. We shall soon find out.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lynnewhelden if you don't think big companies like GoPro don't have inklings of what their competitors are making long before those competitors announce them, you are wrong. GoPro knows what is in this camera and has for a long time. In fact DJI announcing the Osmo Action NOW as opposed to in later summer / early fall for the holidays is perhaps due to them KNOWING the Hero 8 will best their Osmo Action and them wanting the Osmo Action to instead be compared to the Hero 7 at launch. Look, GoPro has NOT performed well for years, the Hero7 was their first good update in many years, and DJI is a formidable competitor that may well be the death knell for GoPro as a company but I wouldn't write off the future of GoPro automatically just because the Osmo Action came out with a front screen 4 months before we find out about a new Hero camera.

      @christopheradeler 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Corsi ☝️ I agree. I would not be surprised if the executives of both organizations agreed with each other on each other’s release dates. May even be strategizing together on their future similar products so that each product has distinct better qualities in different ways.

    Does this one have the Hyperlapse that was introduced on the GoPro Hero 7?

    • @vivealexcheng
      @vivealexcheng 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DJI had it on their OSMO series long before GoPro, so I guess Yes.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vivealexcheng the answer is NO... not at launch. Just regular time-lapse that needs the camera to be kept on a tripod. They have provided beta software to reviewers like DCRainmaker that has hyperlapse just like Hero7 but it won't come out till sometime after launch and appears to be limited to 2.7k/30 not the 4k that GoPro allows but the results appear very similar to GoPro in the beta so the assumption is you won't have to wait long as it appears to be near ready for release.

    I think it all depends whether you prefer the wider fisheye rendering of the GoPro, or the less curvy look of the Osmo. The front display can help you compose more precisely, but many people just point it towards themselves and they'll be in the frame anyway. I prefer the Osmo's lens, but I may be the minority. Defishing the GoPro costs too much resolution for me. I have the Osmo Pocket, and I rarely use the phone app, I generally transfer the card to a computer for editing. Again, I'm probably the minority here.

Should I just stick it out for the GoPro8 and pray that they have a 3.5mm jack and dual screens built in. It's not impossible now that DJI made dual screens and GoPro have had a 3.5mm audio jack before.

    Great review! Just had a quick question, I havent been able to find any info online about... What are the interval options for the time lapse mode? Is there a maximum time lapse duration? And technically can I run the camera on external power over usb?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two timelapse modes (video and photo). For photo the interval options are: .5, 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 8s, 10s, 15s, 20s, 35s, 45s, 65s, 125s. For video, it's .5s, 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 13s, 15s, 20s, 30s. For max duration, there's none for photo. For video, the options are: Infinity, 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m, 1hr, 2hr, 3hr, 5hr. I actually kinda like these max duration options. Neat idea.

      @@JpFishingBrasil Wide is all relative on the OSMO Action - but there's no difference in crop between 4K/2.7K/1080p resolutions, however, this is crop when you go to RockSteady enabled (the same on all). There's technically no 'wide' option on the OSMO Action like there is on the GoPro. It just is what it is (whereas you can turn on/off Dewarp to remove the warping).

  • @GordonChaffin

    Does DJI or GoPro allow you to just plug in a microSD card, record, then pull out the SD and get the video files manually? Are the video files proprietary formats? I just want a prosumer option. I don't want to mess with apps.

    • @Dcrainmaker

      GoPro doesn’t release new Stuff with the customer in mind. They release it with the upcoming „Sale-season“ (Black Friday, Christmas) in mind.

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MiikaWasHere actually no, they always get the most sales leading into the holiday season for christmas. DJI likely launched now primarily because their new Osmo Action competes well against the Hero7 Black and will get a lot of attention right now while if they too launched for the holiday season it will be facing the Hero8 Black which we have to assume will be more competitive with Osmo Action, perhaps with its own significant advantages and steal quite a bit of press from DJI. To me DJI launched now because the story of their camera is better NOW than come September when the competition makes their own leaps.
