Great review and comparison! The dji sure piqued my interest, but the colors seem so faded out next to the GoPro right? And what kind of mounts/accessories does it need? Seems almost able to reuse GoPro ones?
Most of these reviews miss talking about the supporting app for these action cameras. I've been using GoPro's app on my ipad pro, and DJI's on my Android, and personally I've found GoPro's way easier to pull files from (sets up a wifi connection automatically) than DJIs (using it with the Osmo Mobile 2). That is a big part of the usability of these devices, as messing with micro SD cards is a bit of a pain. The other thing is the field of view is wide enough (even in linear mode) on GoPro, its pretty easy to "VLOG" and know that youre in the shot. with the screen on all the time I can't imagine the DJI's battery would last. I'd also like to see if the DJI produces any noticeable artifacts using rocksteady in fast changing frames - I've been very impressed with the Hero7 Black's quality, and the stabilization is fantastic.
Was this filmed with a Samyang lens? Has that orange look. Made me think that immediately, although it does look extra deep orange here, so it could just be the color grading.
I'm holding out until someone makes a good alternative to the discontinued GoPro Hero Session. I love the Session form factor but it needs a tiny color screen and updated image stabilization and quality
@@LashanR It would be better than no screen at all. Plus it's possible compose with the 1.4" selfie screen on the Osmo. And I'm not staying the session alternative needs to be the exact same size, it can be a bit bigger accommodate a screen.
I'm actually amazed at the comparison vs the X3000. I use the X3000 for my running videos and love it, but this is a seriously strong contender. Well done DJI
I wonder if GoPro can increase the smoothness output if they increase the crop? Currently HyperSmooth takes about 5% and delivers a good result. The DJI Action definitely looks smoother but you are losing quite a lot of the frame to achieve that result. On a side note, not a fan of the DJI Actions design. It looks like a cheap knock off of the GoPro. Get rid of that typeface!
@@KenMyers That's interesting. I only really use mine in linear mode and the hypersmooth crop seems minimal (but it can probably get the resolution it needs in the crop from fish eye to linear).

Really nice comparison.... I'm left wondering if the stabilization isn't quite an apples to apples comparison since it looks like the DJI crops off quite a bit more. It stands to reason with software-based stabilization that a bigger crop should allow for more stable resulting footage. I wonder if GoPro could simply update their firmware to allow for a bigger crop in the stabilization, and match the results? Or better yet, add a GUI feature that allows the user to adjust the crop amount for the in-camera stabilization....
@@Expertslaunch That's true but a flat color profile should be available as an option, with a 'standard', more vivid profile as the default. I'd say less than 10% of people who'll buy this camera will grade the footage.

So it supports external mic as well, via the USB-C port. Combining with the awesome IS, seems like a really ideal choice for portable Vlog camera. Especially for people who prefer wider angles in their Vlog (like me). The only concerns I have right now, are: - Can I charge it while recording? - If yes, can I use a split cable or some sort of adapter to charge it while using the external mic?
Time will tell whether it’s as tough as the GoPro.. oh and everyone’s slags the GoPro then people buy copies of it like this ... I think dji have just killed their own osmo pocket 😂
though and tough.. One small drop on the floor (gopro 6 black)and the damned casing broke. Also the lens-front-cap-thing got bendt slightly out of its seating. Still works of course but i doubt it will take any moisture anymore.
yeah, a tad bummed. Guess it must have hit the floor harder then it looked, it was on a 3 axis gimble when i dropped it. :| Still. it works fine, no artifacts in video/photos, so its not leaking light. Not even scratched the lens or screen..
Better than any GP IMHO. I wish I would have known about these before buying 2 GP8B. I've been trying one for weeks while waiting for slopro to send my replacements back. It's great. way easier to sync with different smart devices and the front screen is a huge plus.
@@sonnydi3p Kai clearly noted that he was using the D-Cinelike (flat, low contrast) color profile rather than the Standard color mode in the Osmo Action. I wonder how dji disassembled a gopro7 black and studied its hardware. 😅
Probably using a screwdriver.
So it supports external mic as well, via the USB-C port. Combining with the awesome IS, seems like a really ideal choice for portable Vlog camera. Especially for people who prefer wider angles in their Vlog (like me).
The only concerns I have right now, are:
- Can I charge it while recording?
- If yes, can I use a split cable or some sort of adapter to charge it while using the external mic?
Time will tell whether it’s as tough as the GoPro.. oh and everyone’s slags the GoPro then people buy copies of it like this ... I think dji have just killed their own osmo pocket 😂
though and tough.. One small drop on the floor (gopro 6 black)and the damned casing broke. Also the lens-front-cap-thing got bendt slightly out of its seating.
Still works of course but i doubt it will take any moisture anymore.
Jori Diculous oh that’s not good .. mines been really abused and it’s still going strong
yeah, a tad bummed. Guess it must have hit the floor harder then it looked, it was on a 3 axis gimble when i dropped it. :|
Still. it works fine, no artifacts in video/photos, so its not leaking light. Not even scratched the lens or screen..
Better than any GP IMHO. I wish I would have known about these before buying 2 GP8B. I've been trying one for weeks while waiting for slopro to send my replacements back. It's great. way easier to sync with different smart devices and the front screen is a huge plus.
But OSMO color is so poor ?
I noticed that too. Color is not as vibrant as the Sony and GoPro 7.
But I am sure it grades pretty well, at least the osmo pocket footage does.
@@sonnydi3p Kai clearly noted that he was using the D-Cinelike (flat, low contrast) color profile rather than the Standard color mode in the Osmo Action. The advantage is you'll get more detail in the shadows and when color grading have a more cinematic look. If you don't use that mode, you'll have nice saturated colors.
Jay Gilmore ahhh... okay good to know. I know nothing about video stuff. I just like to watch Kai's contents.
@@JayGilmore Still when he uses it for selfie vloging his face is really overexposed... the sky is nice and blue. It would be nice to have a proper test of dynamic range between the two!
Hi Kai. I noticed that the DJI Osmo Action and the Osmo Pocket are very similar in price. Which is best for what? Which one would you choose? And why? Any chance of a comparison?
Most asked question: external microphone
Great video explaining the camera Kai! BTW, what is the De-Warp you used near the end of the video? is that a plugin? Premiere setting? Looking forward to more videos Cheers!
De-warp is actually a feature you can turn on/off within the osmo action. Video has HDR function too but not for pictures
Ryan Sylert thanks for the info!
At slow mo, you should have dropped the camera in the beer!!!!!
Great review as always. Very impressive, this camera has me intrigued. Any idea on the price point? Never mind, I saw that it runs for $349. I have the DJI Osmo Mobile 2, but after taking it on 2 trips, I've begun to hate it because it's a PIA to set up and travel with. I might just take the plunge on something like this.
Aren't we going to address the 12 year old D700 box?
gopro user for 5 years now... still gopro.. their after sales support is one factor to consider too.
PLEASE- WHAT MIC Adapter works?? Thank you.
The audio actually looks to be coming from his lavaliere mic. Notice how he jostles the Rode mic around and the sound doesn't change one bit. Maybe he was HOPING that the 3.5 > USB-C adapters would work by the time the video and/or the product came out?
Great review, Kai 😊and fun as usual👍
