3D Printed RC Truck V4: Remade from scratch!

  • Where to even start on this project...
    This is the continuation of the 3D Printed Rc Truck V3.
    I remade 80% of the drivetrain and it's now a full-time 6x6 rock crawler.
    The whole idea has always been to make everything easily replaceable if it breaks and all the hardware you need is screws and bearings.
    Axles, differentials, transfer case, driveshafts, wheels, chassis and so on is all 3D printed, tyres can be printed but can also be bought premade.
    This version is a 'rolling chassis' version where you can modify it to suit your needs.
    All the files and documentation can be found here:

      Nice design, runs smooth. Its awesome friend. Getting hardware was tough.. for me, but
      managed it. prints came out pretty nice with flash forge finder with little bit sanding fits
      perfect. I had to redesign Motor mount and its joint for my motor and had to slice frame
      so that I could print. For electronics and power I am using Arduino, motor shield and 3S LiPo.
      Controlled via Bluetooth and smart phone.
      gear box is attached only with 2 screws. it would be better with 4 screws along with nuts for strength ?
      extra, I added front body piece. (not really wanted) :) and small box to fit Arduino.
      Thanks its excellent.

    Beautiful evolution since the first model. I am doing a 6x6 on the basis of your axles with a modification of your V4 with 3 differentials. I will submit the file of the intermediate bridge twin wheels with differential. (it is not in the download files on Thingiverse). The intermediate axle differential is in single wheel version (so too wide).
    I am also preparing a suspension system to be applied to suspensions of the intermediate and final axles.
    I hesitate between two cabins to manufacture: the SCANIA T143 or BERLIET GBH 280.
    You did a very good job

    I want to make it just 4x4 for crawling, i guess in that case just have to print the rear and front axle and for chassis, part a and part b too, and about the link for the gear box 12V 550RPM motor the link is not working, another one that you recomend or i can buy any with same spesifications? i´m thinking to print the gear box used on the v3 till i find one, not sure if you can share another link, and keep going, it is a awesome project. from Dominican Republic.

      For 4x4 all you need to do is remove the last axle and the corresponding part of the frame.

      M3 threaded rod you can find in any hardware store. M3 rodends like these would work: goo.gl/Bj1KF2

    • @MrCrankyface
      @MrCrankyface  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly, the gearbox setup gives you a topspeed of 12kph. If you get a higher RPM motor you can definitely go faster with no real risk of overheating the gears. Eventually you're gonna overtorque the gearbox and start snapping U-joints though.

      As you can see in the video, it works with bought Tamiya tires so that's always an option. :)
      Printing the tyres gives you endless possibilities when it comes to size, shape and thread though so there's always that.

    I really want to make this but I’m on a strict budget so I don’t want to buy the files, also I’ve never used that other website you put them on, please put them back on thingiverse, things don’t get corrupted when you download individually, amazing design and I want one, please please please please

    • @MrCrankyface
      @MrCrankyface  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's more reasons than just the file corruption that makes me despise thingiverse. Overall it's a very poorly functioning platform.
      With the amount of work I put into these creations I will not be putting them up for free again.
      If you can afford a 3d printer and filament then you can definitely afford the 5 bucks I'm asking for hundreds of hours of work.

  • @sisco6943
    @sisco6943 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually modded your V3 into a 6x6 as my first 3d printing rc project. It turned out horrible and the pieces in the driveshaft break after 2 minutes of driving. Hope yours turned out better than that.
    I would recommend that you try out a 775 sized low rpm motor on this. By low rpm i mean around 5000 rpm. I've tried a similar geared dc motor and its performance was bad. I'm using a 10000 rpm 775 motor in a completely new 8x8 truck. The 775 motors are under $10 and i would recommend you to try one out if you want more torque than what that geared motor is putting out.
    Also get a better esc, the one in the video performs terribly at 3s.

    • @MrCrankyface
      @MrCrankyface  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip about the 775 size! I will look into that, they definitely seem dirt-cheap.
      I've so far only broken a half-axle but the part had very low infill and chassis was loaded with 3kg of steel so it seems durable so far, when printed with correct infill and perimeters.
      By what criteria do you think the ESC is performing terribly?

    • @sisco6943
      @sisco6943 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had one of those esc's and it couldn't output enough current to the motor. I'm currently using the slightly more expensive esc's that are actually designed to be used for 3s. (more expensive by like $2)
      Heres a link to what i mean: www.ebay.com/itm/320A-7-2V-16V-Bidirectional-Brushed-ESC-Speed-Controller-for-RC-Car-Truck-Boa-R1/232729914979
      The only problem with these is that there is no diode on the servo lead so I've ruined a couple by inputting 5v back into the esc through the servo lead. So you should definitely stick a diode in there to avoid that.

    • @MrCrankyface
      @MrCrankyface  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I ordered one and will compare the performance between them. :) I have noticed that this current ESC stutters sometimes, might be hitting some current protection, despite being "china rated" at insane amperages. Oh well, you get what you pay for. :)

    • @sisco6943
      @sisco6943 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bad esc uses lr8726 mosfets, which are rated for 86A.
      www.infineon.com/dgdl/irlr8726pbf.pdf?fileId=5546d462533600a40153567181dd26f7
      The other esc uses CEP83A3 mosfets which are rated at 100A continous. web2.cetsemi.com/PDF/TO-220-263-N/CET_CEP83A3.PDF
      China ratings are always incorrect and really annoying. Adding a cap between + and - on the bad esc helped with some of the stuttering on my bad esc.
      Good luck with your project!

    • @MrCrankyface
      @MrCrankyface  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey!
      I recently received this ESC and tried it for another vehicle.... Night and day difference compared to the bad one. Thanks for the tip!
