      It worked fine with the stock pump right up until I removed it and installed hydro assist. I really liked the PSC HDII gearbox but it wouldn’t work with my LS engine that I recently installed due to its large case.

    Hi mike another great project.
    I'm setting up my shop in Oregon
    I build automatic transmission, love your shop set up if you don't mind what size plate did you use on your bench top
    And are you happy with your hoist is it a 10/12k I am looking at rotary/ challenger I do mostly 3/4 1 ton truck stuff

      Thanks for the comments Mike. Good luck and congrats on setting up your shop.
      My fabrication table measures 32” deep x 60” long x 32” tall and is built from 1.5”x .188” wall square tubing. The top is supported with additional tubing then the 3/8” thick top was welded on. Built it about 15 or so years ago and it has worked out excellent. I also use it for other things than welding/fabricating so no holes. When I build a transmission I roll it adjacent to my workbench and lay components out.
      My lift is an Ammco 10k pound. The Challenger Versalift is very similar as I was told they were built in the same factory and sister companies. It lifts my Duramax easily.

      I no longer have the PSC HD gearbox as it would not fit with my 6.2 liter LS engine so I went back to the OEM steering gearbox but had it ported for hydraulic assist when I swapped engines.
      I still have the stock pump however and it has performed flawlessly, even with 37's. I also have the same small auxiliary cooler that I installed when I did my PSC HD box with the hydro-assist setup.

      I had swapped the OEM box out for the PSC XD several years ago. I then had to swap in a ported OEM box when I installed my 6.2 liter LS engine as the PSC box was too large. I used the OEM box and ported it for hydro-assist.

    What technique do you use to maintain the toe adjustment. I.E. keeping the steering wheel centered and not impacting air bag clock sensor?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are actually two different things. Toe doesn’t change because you are not disconnecting nor altering the tie rod itself. The drag link (from pitman arm down to right steering knuckle) will have to be adjusted when finished.
      I disconnect the steering column input from the gearbox being careful not to rotate it while removing/installing the gearbox as you can damage the clockspring if you turn it much while disconnected.
      Upon reinstallation of the steering input on the gearbox after installation I merely loosen the clamp on the drag link and adjust it getting the steering wheel close then tweak it as needed during the road test to get it spot on.
      Hope that makes sense.
      Thanks for watching.

    Hello! I've just installed a Hydro assist PSC to my rubicon 2016... since then, the steering gear box is leaking from the top, not the connections, it seems to be from the screws on the top of the sector shaft, also I can hear a sound that seems to come from the box... do you have any ideas what's going on? i will appreciate any helps! (The PSC hydro assist is brand new)

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leaking from the top must be the gasket. Thus is somewhat common.

    How does the stock power steeering pump run with this big bore steering box?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It worked fine with the OEM pump on the 3.8 liter engine and 35” tires.
      However, I no longer have the PSC HD gearbox in my Jeep. It wouldn’t work with my 6.2 liter LS engine so for the last two years I’ve been running my OEM pump and ported gearbox to work in conjunction with a 1.5” hydraulic assist ram. This setup works fantastic with the 37” tires I’m now running.

      I installed a Derale 14” heat sink style cooler for my power steering years ago and haven’t experienced any steering issues since. Although a cooler really isn’t necessary with my hydraulic assist ram I just left it in place as extra insurance against heat.

    Hey how much of a difference have you felt so far? Does it make steering any better or just stronger?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve actually removed and sold my PSC Big Bore HD gearbox and have hydraulic assist steering now. I only had the HD gearbox for about 8 months but I liked it.
      The HD gearbox was a big step up in strength and gave me peace of mind when off-road as well as improved steering. I can say I would recommend it based on the fairly short time I had the gearbox on my Jeep.
      Thanks for watching.
      Mike

    • @taylorcampbell985
      @taylorcampbell985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome thanks. Is hydro assist way better? And why did you go full hydro assist?

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t go full-hydraulic as that is not DOT approved/legal, I went hydraulic assist. This places the small (1.5”) hydraulic ram parallel with the tie rod taking the weak sector shaft out of the equation. It basically turns the steering gearbox into a hydraulic valve directing the fluid to the hydraulic ram in either direction putting the force directly on the tie rod and steering knuckle.
      Personally for light wheeling on 37’s and smaller the Big Bore HD II gearbox works great but for more aggressive wheeling on 37” and larger tires I would recommend hydraulic assist, especially with a front locker.
      I removed mine because the gearbox is physically larger than the first generation PSC Big Bore gearbox and it wouldn’t work with my 6.2 liter LS engine strictly due to size.
      I really like the hydraulic assist. It works great with the V8 engine and 37” tires regardless of whether cruising down the highway or crawling in Moab.
      Mike

    • @taylorcampbell985
      @taylorcampbell985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome man thanks for all the feedback I appreciate it. I hear hydro feels a lot different as well. I was looking into the synergy sector shaft brace for some extra strength I have a high steer set up right now.

    • @zmotorsports62
      @zmotorsports62  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome.
      In my experience if you go too large of a ram on hydro-assist it can create a numb or unresponsiveness feel to the steering but if you stay with the smaller ram I feel no real difference other than it isn’t as quick to turn at low RPM but not sluggish or anything like that. I still get very responsive driver feedback when cruising down the highway.
      I daily drive mine and I love the hydro-assist both on and off-road. My wife even takes the Jeep on occasions hasn’t reported back any adverse feeling of responsiveness.
      I hope that has been helpful.
