    The Microtech "secret" is the massive, hardened blade locks, how they're shaped, and how they're fitted. The blade lock recess is precisely dimensioned to eliminate shifting of the lock under strain. Also, the radiused shape acts to make the locks tend to rotate toward the centerline of the blade as pressure is applied. On inexpensive OTFs - and many not-so-inexpensive versions the locks are little more sophisticated than stamped out squares barely over 1mm thick, with squared profiles on the their edges. These locks, combined with oversized recesses, allow the lock to be pushed close to engagement loss, and tend to fold away from the blade centerline under pressure.
    Be nice if reviewers understood the "why" of MT OTF design and used calipers to compare against lesser brand blade locks.

    I purchased a Marfione Custom Combat Troodon to add to my Microtech collection which started with a Halo VI and I love it but the strength required to deploy the retract the blade was incredible before I disassembled it and smoothed things over.
    Microtech was amazing though and offered to pay for shipping for me to send it to them to have it looked at but I didn’t need to thankfully. Really cool knife the Combat Troodon.

    Honestly I had my ultratech break on me because I was rapid firing a lot, which, obviously, microtech wouldn't have a contingency for. After I did it, I opened it up to see what part failed, and it was the L shaped hook/ bracket that hooks onto the spring and connects to the slider. I carefully reassembled it making sure I didn't lose any parts and then sent it back to microtech to fix, and then I got it back a week later. I feel like this is a big design flaw though because if I pay for a near $300 knife, I want it to be able to take abuse without a second thought. I literally had it for one week and probably fired it a thousand times, which is a lot to do in one week, but products that are truely great should be able to go through some stress testing of a far greater magnitude and still function completely fine.

    • @kevinmosto
      @kevinmosto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you just got a lemon. that milled piece of metal looks pretty damn solid and could take a lot of abuse if machined right. Maybe your UT just had a defective part and your rapid firing only exposed the issue, not creating one.

    The number one rule of inserting machine screws in aluminum is to first rotate them backward (counterclockwise) until you feel the screw "pop" in as the screw thread drops off the hole's thread. Then turn the screw clockwise. Those who just start cranking screws clockwise into aluminum will end up cross-threading and stripping out the hole...then blaming it on the manufacturer for not figuring out a way to stop a ham-fist from goobering it up.

    Good video. Do you have any advice about how to make deploying an Ultratech any easier. I have heard some people say that lightly stretching the spring helps, but I have had just as many people say never to do that. Thanks -

    • @Lugermonger35
      @Lugermonger35  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be on the side of saying never do that it would work the trigger is tensioned by the spring but so is deployment of the blade not just from the aspect of possible damage it or voiding your warranty you would be lessening the deployment speed of the blades which would negatively effect reliability in an OTF I really don't have any solutions for that besides the smaller the knife the smaller the blade generally equates to lesser spring tension like the utx-70 or utx-85 maybe a bit easier to deploy

    • @Tiralful
      @Tiralful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a second spring off Etsy for like $12 shipped and stretched it. It helped a crap ton. But I recommend you buy a second one and modify it just in case you mess up or need to send it in for repair. My knife fired WAY to hard and hurt my thumb quite a bit.

      A few pieces of printer paper will make the knife come off track, so would a hand. BUT. The bayonet (which he has), spartan, double edge & tanto tip are so pointy that it would stick in your bone. You would have a hairline poke in your bone. I highly recommend you try it ! Stupidity always wins Stupid rewards! I used a steak for this scientific test. The tip (Microtech's modified tanto in this case) left a tiny hole in the bone. Just a little kiss from the Ultratech

And where did you obtain the properiety screw tool from, obviously microtech won't sell them to the public? They use those special screws for a reason so knuckle heads like you won't take them apart and tamper with the knives mechanisms or just have a curious wonder what it looks like inside. By the way that blue combat troodon looks like a Marfione custom knife, those customs knives ain't cheap and i would be afraid to take them apart.
