    You have confused polar patterns with diaphragm types. You showed two polar patterns (omni and cardioid) but described them as condenser and dynamic. Neither condenser nor dynamic mics pick up equally from all angles unless they are omnidirectional (and most aren’t). Podcastage is a great TH-cam channel for learning about different types of microphones if you’re so inclined.

    As pointed out by another person, omnidirectional and cardioid are pick-up patterns. Condenser mics and dynamic mics are two different types of the mechanisms inside the mic. Condensers are preferred because you can be further away from the mic and have better sound but are usually directional… also they require power to operate (phantom power or an internal battery). Dynamic mics are better a lot of times for live music because they are durable.

    I really like your videos very educational. I have been podcasting for about five years now. I started out with a cheap USB mic and gradually ended up where I am now. My vocal chain plays out like this. I use two microphones for my solo podcast, I use a dynamic mic and a condenser mic, I use the Sontronics Corona for my podcast for normal speaking and recording and when I have a special episode or have to do voiceover for the podcast, I use a Cad Audio E100SX for the voiceover. I use Mogami cables that I plug into a Warm Audio WA12 preamp, this is only used for the condenser microphone, So from the Condenser microphone, into the Warm Audio WA12 mic preamp, then into an Audient Interface. I plug the Corona Mic straight into the Audient interface. I use two mics because I want two different mic sounds for different episodes.

      Hi! Thank you for the feedback, and thanks for sharing this! This will be very helpful for other users looking for the same effects 🙂
      We're curious, why do you prefer 2 different mic sounds?

    • @AngloSaxon1
      @AngloSaxon1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Riversidefm hello,
      I use two different microphones purely because of the variety of sound. A dynamic mic sounds good, the one I use, the Corona is crystal clear and it works great in most situations even outside of the studio. The Condenser mic has that sound, when you put a condenser through an outboard preamp, and then into a good interface, you can get a nice warm sounding mic, with clarity. A situation where I would use both mics is when I will go from dynamic to Condenser and that would be when I am using the dynamic mic to record a podcast I would change over from dynamic to Condenser when an ad had to be promoted or another speech, I use the condenser to get the message over in A warm condenser style with clarity. It is probably a set up that few use, but it suits me.

    • @AngloSaxon1
      @AngloSaxon1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Riversidefm my setup for the condenser mic is, the microphone is plugged into a Warm Audio WA12 mic preamp, the the preamp then goes into an Audient interface, the dynamic microphone goes straight into the interface.

    Hello friends. She completely explained condenser and dynamic mics wrong. She just put up a picture of different polar patterns. The real difference between a dyanmic and a condenser is how easily the mic can pick up sound. A condenser can be spoken into from relativly far away and it will sound fine, but most dynamics need to be spoken really close into. Dynamics also usally have a darker tone due to the proximity effect. I'd just recommend to do your own research and not trust everyone. Btw I recommend buying shure mics for podcasts. Like the sm7b, mv7, sm57. But with a little eq you can make any mic sound great.

    Hello, this is by FAR the best video I've seen on TH-cam regarding multi-person podcasting. Thank you for that.
    We will be recording 4-5 people (in person) for our podcast (no video). My understanding is we need 4-5 Dynamic XLR microphones (Samson Technologies Q2U, as recommended)....to plug into an audio interface with 4+ mic inputs (we'll follow your advice and get Scarlet audio interface). I am assuming the Scarlett interface plugs into a Mac, or iPad(?) via usb cable ? (Lastly..are earphones really needed? ... we are aiming for a low budget production and currently don't need the end product to be outstanding quality.
    If there is any other advice you can provide in regard to our setup, it will be so appreciated! Thank you so much.

    • @Riversidefm
      @Riversidefm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're so glad we could help you get started!
      The Scarlett interface will plug into your mac via USB-C (if you have a significantly older mac, you will need a USB to USB-C adapter) and it will also work on iPad Pro.
      We would recommend that at least 1 person wears headphones (at least for a test recording) just to make sure that everything sounds okay and all microphones are levelled. It's much easier to fix any audio issues before recording than in post production!
      If you want to avoid purchasing all of the equipment, definitely check out Riverside.fm as a way to record your episode. If you aren't aiming for studio quality, you can use your computers' microphones to record. This will make the whole process much more straightforward! We also have an app and you can record using your phone's microphone.
      Check out our platform walkthrough for more information: th-cam.com/video/b2eRWWjefcc/w-d-xo.html

      The Scarlet gets mad expensive when you get more than 2 XLR inputs. If you're just starting, I'd recommend just getting 1 usb mic and recording everyone on that. You can make it sound pretty ok in post, and it's better than spending $800 on a set up you'll use 3 times

      Riverside actually has a great feature for this in the Editor! It's called AI Speaker view.
      AI Speaker View analyzes the recording and automatically switches whoever is speaking into full screen 1 second before they speak, making for a seamless transition. By analyzing the recording, AI Speaker View switches the video if someone actually speaks, and not for unwanted interruption like a sneeze. We are the first in the world to automate this.
      You find this option in Editor > Layout > AI Speaker View

    Thanks for this video. My question: if I use Riverside, while most of the time we are not together when we record te podcast. Should it be a option when we are togother in the same room, to just use two laptops, 2 mics, 2 headphones and Riverside? So the same setup as we use normaly?

    • @Riversidefm
      @Riversidefm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter! Great question. Yes this will work. There are tons of factors that will decide the quality and how much echo, if any, is occurring (how sensitive are the mics, what is the mic's pickup pattern, how big is the room, etc.). Definitely use headphones and run a quick test recording first to check for any issues. If there is audio bleed, you should enable echo cancellation.
      Depending on your equipment, you could also use 1 computer, 2 mics feeding into the same input, and 1 camera. This would result in one file with both users instead of separate tracks for each, but is another option.

    What do you do to avoid the second/third guest's voice being picked up by the other person's mic? When doing a podcast in person? So for instance - if you have 4 people and they speak over each other, then you get a doubling of their voice in the other mics, creating echoey sounds/phasing? Is this a mic TYPE or PLACEMENT issue? Or??? How does one navigate this?

    Hi. My friend and I are planning to start recording podcasts together, but we can't agree on whether the quality difference between expensive and affordable microphones is really necessary. I suggest buying at least an RE20 or an SM7B, while my friend prefers microphones in the Podmic price range. Do you think the difference between these two microphones would be noticeable for listeners? Do you think we should go all out and choose established, high-end products, or would more budget-friendly microphones suffice? Thank you for your recommendations. Please help me, I've been sleepless for four days, researching only this topic. I admit that I am overly obsessed, but I want to do my job properly and cleanly. I am very talkative and warm-hearted, never hesitant to laugh, and I usually laugh a lot. I used to do Twitch streaming before, so I have knowledge about how to gain viewers. Now, I want to sleep, please tell me which microphone and sound card I should get...

      SM7B need a really good preamp as it need more gain and cheap pre's could add noise. If you work with a cheap interface RE20 or others would be better then.

    a point of clarification between DYNAMIC and CONDENSER microphones - THE MIC BEING USED IN THIS VIDEO IS A CONDENSOR (Audio Technical AT2020). The description used in the video is actually POLARITY (or pattern control). A mic that picks up 360° is Omni direction and a mic that captures sounds in front is Cardiod (or Uni-Directional). All that to say, there are CONDENSER mics that are Cardiod and most higher quality CONDENSERs will have a switch to choose POLARITY patterns (omni, figure-8, cardiod, hypercardiod). A CONDENSER mic is a good option for podcasters (as demonstrated in this video) and will give you a more accurate reproduction of your voice though recognize they are generally more expensive and delicate.

      DYNAMIC microphones (like the Shure SM7b and EV RE20) capture sound using a different internal mechanism and are considered to be more durable and less expensive than CONDENSER microphones but not as accurate.
