I discovered mochi studying the Japanese tea ceremony 30 years ago. I’ve been a fan ever since, and eating them still evokes some of the deep tranquility I experienced with the tea ceremony.
Heyo! Just a super-quick pedantic note: "mochiko" is not a brand, but simply the japanese term for the type of glutinous rice flour. Wikipedia: "The glutinous variety called mochigomeko (もち米粉, or mochiko for short) is produced from ground cooked glutinous rice (もち米, mochigome) and is used to create mochi or as a thickener for sauces." [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_flour] Looks delish by the way! ((:
@@natalie_watson potato starch or any other very fine powder starch; you could maaaaybe even try powdered sugar but i am really not sure if that'd go well hahah. I've only used potato starch myself (:
This guy is my literal savior. I've been in lockdown and all the mochi shops were closed... I've found your video, made it and made more the next day!! Thanks for this simple recipe, I thought mochi was more advanced but thanks to you, I can make em all day. Thanks man :)!!
FINALLY a mochi recipe I can do. I've been wanting an easy recipe for mochi since I tried it over a year ago and you answered all the questions I had in the process thanks man
So easy!!! I halved the recipe to make a small batch for each of my grandsons who loved rolling, and eating it for their first Japanese Tea Ceremony. They got to add some food coloring. Next time we will fill the dough. Now it was just rolled and cut into pieces. I needed to microwave the halved recipe (uncovered) for only 60 seconds and it was perfect.
I have never heard of mochi. I will try it. It doesn't look anywhere near diabetic friendly, but I would still like to make it for a chest day. I've subscribed. Thank you for posting! Blessings and health on you and yours and to all who read this! 😘👍😇💖
This is so helpful. I am a disaster when it comes to trying to make mochi. It's all over the place and so hard to clean up. This will make it so much easier. Thank you!
I love your enthusiasm. Fun and inspiring. So nice to be able to make the mochi so quickly via microwave, thank you. I made some with red bean paste and mung bean paste and it turned out great. Also added some minced nuts and sesame seeds to the paste and that turned out amazing too. I was able to freeze them and thaw them in fridge and it was always softened well again. When mochi ball seems a bit hard, a quick 15 sec in microwave made the mochi perfectly yummy again.
How to make Mochi: Step 1: get a huge freezer Step 2: put nothing in the freezer to have enough space for the Mochi Step 3: cry in tiny freezer that doesn’t even have enough space for one tiny little cuty Mochi
The way i make mochi you don't need a freezer at all! You just make your mixture in a small bowl, cover it with a plate and microwave, and let it cool a little before putting it on the plate with the corn starch and rolling it out! It's much better portion wise too for one or two people!
I made jello mochi using 3 oz of jello mix along with sweet rice flour and added cup of hot water to pre-start the cooking process and then microwave for 1 minute intervals, stirring in between until fully cooked.
My small ice cream scoop is the best purchase I've ever made. I found my favorite one, from Oxo, at a local thrift store for $2 but I also have one that I bought for $12 at Kroger. It makes making these so much easier. Also, throwing the whole can in the freezer before scooping for about 10-15 minutes will make it so that it doesn't stick to your scoop as much.
Never eaten or made these before but a lot of people seem to love them. It's probably time I made some :D And I must say, you saying that it was going to be the easiest recipe made me real happy, as the concept itself was always intimidating for me ;P Also, I love bean based dessert (brownies, cookies etc) so they will probably be a hit for me :D . Anyways, thank you for teaching us how to make such a great treat and ceaselessly expanding our perspective on what's possible! Have a fabulous week ahead and stay safe!
Thank you so much Margaret!!! It is so good and if you already like sweet bean recipes then yeah, you'll absolutely love this!! Hope you make it!!! I know you'll love it!
I'm going to be that person. Just cause it's driving me crazy. Mochiko = Japanese word for sweet rice flower. Koda Farms is the brand of mochiko that you showed. It is probably the easiest Japanese brand to get in the US and can be found at any Japanese or Asian market. Other countries, like Korea, China, etc also will have their own word for sweet rice flower, and their own brands.
Aaaaah you can make sweet crepes with mini mochis (I see the ones without filling being used, but be the captain of your soul) and strawberries and wathever you want because crepes are great!

Nice I love it. Only thing is that a lot of utilities were pretty useless and could have been left out. Cupcake tray, backing tray, plastic wrap, cupcake wrapping, half of the starch. A simple dinner plate and a middle sized cutting board are enough.

Hey guys! Btw if you don’t have rice flour but you have cornstarch you can use 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 6 tablespoons of cornstarch plus 1/3 cup of water mix it up until a watery consistency in a pan then after that turn your stove. Move the pan to the stove and turn it on medium heat and stir till it’s a doughy consistency it should be a little sticky! You can add any extract after that like ube or pandan those are just examples you can use any extract and then need it into the dough with your hands (I suggest 2 drops of extract) and then you can add your ice cream and fold it kinda like a dumpling fold sides and pinch it at the. (Side note you can also add pasted like the ones in this video or you could add ice cream like I’ve seen in stores. But I do prefer adding extract so the dough tastes better. There are other ways I can list but some don’t always work as well
What about tapioca flour? We use it to make pão de queijo and it has a very similar texture. Gonna try to make tapioca mochi and tell you what I've got.
