Currently on the lap 7 months in. 79 series and 21ft van. Only tip would be yeah get yourself prepared but don’t stress too much about getting everything perfect, you’ll work it out along the way, bit like ya house, there’s always something else you wanna do, change, upgrade, fix or swap around after living it. Just take each day as it comes. Best decision we ever made! Loved the episode guys

I went around in 1991. HZ Holden Ute, swag and an esky. Best time ever, even did the Gibb River road, take your time and you can do it in any vehicle and cheap. Just finished building up my new 79 single cab with atommy camper on its way in Feb. already circled the date.

Just back from nearly 3 years travelling around Oz. Biggest tip, don't forget your maintenance on the car or the trailer. We serviced both the car and camper trailer every 10 - 15,000km. In many cases you need to book weeks in advance to get servicing done, so you have to plan ahead.

Been travelling for 4 years now, done 145000kms through Qld, NSW and NT, VIC is next on our list. We started in a camper trailer and are now in swags, got rid of towing everywhere. My number 1 tip for people would be do what you want and don’t get wrapped up in what everyone else is doing! HiLux, swags, 2 adults, 2 boys (15&13), and a kelpie. The Deans Around Oz!

Currently 2 months into my lap; one piece of advice I heard from someone else was “your problems don’t disappear because you are on the road” which is so true 😅 I’ve had many things happen that I hadn’t foreseen or planned for. Pick up an outlet for gratitude and reflection on the trip. Reminder that there ARE shops on the road 😅 Lists help get everything that’s in your head, out; it can get busy in there with all the planning.

Great vid guys. Tks for sharing. My wife and I are recently retired and we’re on a 12 year plus trip driving all over Oz. We love it !! One thing to be aware of is that life often gets in the road that usual leads to changing your plans. Eg, a wedding you must attend, a family illness, whatever. Just roll with it and adapt. Tks again .

I am a road train driver. Recently i had a drive of a 4wd with a caravan behind. And i thought it would be easy with my experience on dirt rough roads and towing 2 or more trailers. I had my eyes opened big time and if i buy one of my own i will definably do a lot of short trips to get experience before the big trip.

My former girlfriend (and current wife, we married at the end of the trip) and I did the lap back in 2004/2005. Started from Germany, landed in Darwin, bought a 17yrs old Petrol Troopy, headed east, then down the Coast to Cangaroo Island, up to Alice, cross the Gibson Desert to Esperance, up the Westcoast, back to Darwin (straight into the marriage office) : 35.000km. Sold the car and had the time of our lives. We lived in the car, had 5 flat tyres (on the Savannah Hway) and no idea about 4wd driving in the beginning. We'll do it again in a couple of years. I pretty much enjoy watching Graham and Jocko talking about all that stuff, we were thinking about as well ages ago 🙂Maybe we catch up on the road one day...

We’re located in the UK and have just come back from a big 6 week trip to Morocco and back in our Disco. Had a cracking time, met loads of people. One thing I learnt while on the road was to kick back and grasp the nomad attitude 👍🏼 Whatever happens, happens for a reason.

Currently prepping the Defender 110 and Jawa 13ft hybrid off-road van to hit the road next year.
We've done the east, from Tassie to the Cape, and next year we're heading west.
Keeping the Defender mostly standard, with minor upgrades, and thorough maintenance, and the van is kept packed and ready to go.
Raptor would be good to protect the Defender.
    Your tips are good:
    1. One big trip a week and then make a base camp
    2. Travel light with essentials
    3. Look for auto fuel pumps
    4. Relax and enjoy

To date, I've enjoyed watching the new Off-Grid series. 👌 I love overlanding, and it seems many others too. It's a segment of the 4WD community that your channel seems to have forgotten to cater to in past few years. Preferring instead to do the "uber-hard wheeling, break parts and do panel damage" episodes. So it's fantastic that Graham is doing some touring that many (just like me) can aspire to do. ❤ No one aspires to break nor damage their rigs, right? 🤔

    • @fatmanoverlanding
      @fatmanoverlanding 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I too have been enjoying Graham's new series. I think the 4WD 24/7 crew will realise, there are enough touring 4WDers out there to warrant touring style episodes to grace their channel from time to time. I agree with you 100% on aspiring to go see places others have shown. So kudos to Graham. Looking forward to the rest of his trip. 👍

Hey lads I've got a bit on. I'm doing rust repairs on my 105 series. It is 1hdt powered and she loves it. I have gutted the whole vehicle and cutting rust out from behind the windscreen. My partner has a single cab ln106 hilux project. We are getting ready to raptor liner it atm. It's twin locked and has some fruit but is in need of a spruce up. That tintable raptor kit would make her lux a whole new animal. We both have watched just about every episode of 4wd24/7 and our favourites would have to be the Fraser trips. We are yet to go ourselves but we will make it happen. Thanks for the opportunity lads I'm going back out to the shed

You don't have to be a 4x4er to want to do the big lap. We did it in a 1962 Bedford SB series bus and after the big lap we did a half lap through the centre. The one bit of advice I would give is, if you want to do it, don't wait, get out there and do it now. We did it in our late 30s early 40s. I am 62 now and I just couldn't do it so I am SO glad we did it when we could. We were on the road full time for 5 years and we had planned for just 12 months!

Solar shower works well, Prep meals in advance and vac seal, if freezer space allows (or turn fridge into freezer), we have a big water bladder that sits on the floor of the back. We used non potable water as well at Ningaloo to save drinking water, so the water lasted us 3 weeks.

  • @BradGryphonn
    @BradGryphonn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'll be doing similar next year. However, my budget will be roughly 300 bucks a week. As a result, my stops will be longer than normal. By the time I've finished (including rego), my ute should owe me about 6 grand all up. It's a super-budget build. I've spent most of that money restoring the suspension, brakes, and engine.
I have most of the solar set up ready to install, a genset, welder, compressor, complete tool set etc. It'll basically be a mobile workshop with a bed, kitchen, and hot water (100 litre water tank is going in as well).

As an American truck driver, I teach people, when reversing turn to your trouble. If you have too much trailer in your left mirror turn left. Also know that your vehicle will travel some distance before, your trailer begins to react, and your trailer will travel some distance before it turns. An example my 53 foot trailer would travel about 8ft before the inside tire of the turn moved. Hope this helps. Perhaps you could do a video.

We managed around 10mths of travel around Aus untill we were forced to head back home due to the camper we were travelling in got damaged in a storm. The main reason we had to head home is the insurance. It got fixed and everything was sorted.... about 12mths down the track. So because we didn't have anything to live in we had to head back home, and insurance wouldn't assist us in any way shape or form.
Our biggest tip is to check when your insurance is going to cover and how much coverage you get.

Been working on my ln106 for the past few yrs.. As saving for a house and then house Reno's got in the way I try and do as much as I can when I can. Had to do a back panel cut as the one on it had been rusted out and is now blue on white. Hi guys, great episode fellas. There are so many of us out there that want to do the big lap and all the advice is so helpful to plan the big trip.
Regarding the Raptor give away, I have built up our 80 series so the Mr's and I can do exactly what this episode is about. The big lap. I purchased the 80 off the original owner from a farmer out the back of Warwick so I can bet that it has never been on tough 4WD tracks let alone the beach. Everything on the unit was very well looked after but unfortunately the paint has lost all the clear coat on the roof, bonnet and tops of the doors. I, or should I say we would love to give the old girl a fresh coat of Raptor, then when going through those bush trails that give the vehicle free pin stripes we wouldn't have to grit out teeth every time we hear the dreaded 'nails on the chalk board' sounds.
Anyway as mentioned, great episode with lots of good advice.
    Thanks Roger and Trish

One thing I’d find interesting that no one seems to talk about is whether these people have a house etc back at home still? Is stuff in storage? Are they working while out there? $20-30k is a decent chunk of cash and I imagine most people don’t want to return and start life again from scratch. So how to balance that would be interesting discussion point.

18-20L on the highway is shocking...
A small camper is a must I think, if not a full van if you have one. As for boats, a roof top tinny is a great option.
I'd also say do it in small sections, because it makes it easier. And that manages the weather easier.
As for the Raptor, I have a tub and trailer that need coating.

Hi guys, I am relatively new at the moderate kind of 4wd'ing thing. I have had 4wd's for years but my latest is the first one that has been kited out for the heavier going stuff (ie lift kit and big tyres with offsets etc.
I have noticed with my latest car an issue that in all honesty is a pain in the ass...rim offsets that give a much wider wheel track than a lot of other 4wd's are using. I often cannot enter the mud puddles id like to because the Jeep is too wide in the wheel track to fit into them. I am finding that in almost every case I'm about 75-100mm too wide. Im also having to be much more careful of tearing the side out of a tyre on cutoff exposed tree roots etc..i would have been far better off staying with wheel track that is similar to what most other 4wd's are using!

My TB42e GQ gets 18-20 per hundred too. Can get down to 16 on the highway. Havent towed with it yet but i expect the same increase that graham saw.
In regard to the Raptor, I would do the lower half of my GQ in black Raptor and do the top half in a 2pac green. Im punishing on the lower half of my vehicle but the upper half rarely gets touched.

I’d raptor my L400 Delica which I’ve just bought, the paint on it is current currently turning to dust and needs a respray if I’m gonna keep taking it on trips to make sure it doesn’t rust anymore

Shooting off on our own big lap from July next year, starting in Brisbane and shooting north to the Cape, then through the top end & Kimberly's before coming down the west coast. Super keen and thanks for the tips! I've got some "well-used" barwork that could use a touch up before we hit the tough stuff, the Raptor would be perfect!

I'd 100% Raptor my 08 Triton. The paints getting to the point of needing a refreshing and I reckon that Raptor paint would be a great upgrade

The Big Lap sounds awesome. We are preparing now for February 2024 however, with all the things on our “ must do” list it’s looking more like a Big Zig Zag Lap 😂. Zigging and Zagging to include the Savannah way, Australia’s Longest Short cut, The Gibb River road and many more as well as covering the coast. 🙂

Raptor coat up my tired and fading PJ ranger, it's served me well for 15yrs and 228000 Kms so deserves to look shiny and new again without me worrying about pin stripes, cheers 🍻

Watching from Quondong point, WA on our big lap with the two dogs and the misses living out of the 80 and an Oztent RV5. Perfect set up for us, don’t have to tow and still have a home base to do day trips out of 👌🏼

Just picked up myself an ln167R, in the process of lifting with wheels and tyres, then looking at getting some proper bar work, long term would love to do similar to the pony with a whole body respray in raptor, would be a treat!

For the raptor, I'd love to white raptor the bottom half of my Trailblazer. I've pin stripped it so much towing the van through some really tight places.

I just bought my first Ute, a 2011 dual cab MN triton. I know tritons aren’t all flash or heavily desired but I’m pretty stoked with it. Would love to raptor coat the whole thing as the paint work on the car is pretty shocking atm 😂

I got myself a second hand bullbar for my ford ranger. It had rust over it that I have cleaned up. I'am looking for something to paint it with, I watched Jocko paint his Hilux and it looked good. I would love to paint the bar and get it on my ranger. Keep the video comming Graham as I like the new setup. Jocko you should sell the technology behind your new hover Hilux.

I’m currently fixing up a ln169 , been watching your video on painting the pony and how to use body bog which was exactly what I needed as this 3rz body needs a bit of bog in places, already got the sandblaster sorted. I was just going to spray over it with touch paint in the same factory colour code but a raptor full respray would make it look mint

Just completed a lap over two years in my 2008 sr hilux that was my work Ute! That now has 400k kms. Completed on $500 weekly with my partner doing all the good stuff! Don’t think you need a 250k fwd + van +1000 bucks weekly, just get out their and do it! Anyone can just get the date and get it done! Loved it ❤

Planning now, so much to do before I take off on 1 Mar 23, most planning involves making my old vehicle ready, it's not just a matter of, fuel it up and go!! 90% of my prep has involved making in mechanically sound and I am reckoning things will still go wrong on the track...grrrr however the less time I have to 2nd guess what may go wrong on the road will be a saving in the long run! Won"t be towing, dont need that hassle, just need a comfy stretcher and waterproof tent and tarp. Yep a bit rough for most I am guessing but represents freedom for me! Free camping is planned however have allowed for an occassional stop at a paid spot for a bad weather situation. Already doing the trip planner on Wiki too, this helps works out how much time will be spent on driving between spots (have allowed for detours, diversions and recovery distance if required). Will only be doing long km days, 1 out of every 7-10 days, so stop overs must have enough to keep me busy on short day excursions or have enough things to occupy me just camped up either fishing, swimming (sans crocs), exploring trail hikes, reading or snoozing! lol Yep so much planning as I do not have a time limit for the travel, so if getting all the way around takes years, then it will, until I am either sick of it or my vehicle says enough's enough, but hey how long is a piece of string! Soooo looking forward to getting out there, away from the maddening crowds, sleeping under starry skys, enjoying what Australia has to offer! Yep this should be on everyone's bucket list. It's so funny, up until Covid most of my travel was done in overseas destinations without even considering my own back yard. Now, I couldn't give 2 hoots if I never get off the Island ever again! LOL
Thanks Graham and all the crew at 24/7 you certainly have been an inspiration and also the kick in the arse that I needed to appreciate what is on our very doorstep! Cheers👌

My step son has just saved enough through his apprenticeship job to buy and rebuild his pops Ranger which had a blown engine. It’s a bit battered and not looking the best but he loves it and is trying to build a great off road rig with his hard earned. I’d love to be able to help him respray the Ranger with the Raptor and make it his dream rig.

I’d love a raptor kit as my car is looking a little worse for wear. With a couple of rust spots that need patching, as well as a few custom mods going on. And then I’m thinking to respray the hole car.
Love sitting down and watching your videos (the highlight of the week). Living the dream 👍
