How To Diagnose GM Knock Sensors - P0327 & P0332

- Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at the infamous GM knock sensors on this 2003 Chevy 1500 with the 4.8. This is a very common problem on many GM trucks and in this video we show you how to diagnose the codes DTC P0327: KNOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT - LOW VOLTAGE - SENSOR 1 & DTC P0332: KNOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT - LOW VOLTAGE - SENSOR 2 using a simple lab scope and some simple testing methods.
Description:
The Knock Sensor (KS) system enables the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control the ignition timing for the best possible performance while protecting the engine from potentially damaging levels of detonation. The system uses 2 KS located under the intake manifold. KS 1 is located at the front of the engine. KS 2 is located at the back of the engine. Each KS produces and AC voltage that varies depending on the vibration level during engine operation. The PCM adjusts the spark timing based on the amplitude and frequency of the KS signal. The PCM used each KS signal to calculated an average voltage range value. If the KS system is operating normally, the PCM should monitor the KS voltage varying above and below the voltage range. If the PCM detects the KS signal voltage within the voltage range, or the KS signal is not present, a DTC will set. DTC P0327 refers to the front KS. DTC P0332 refers to the rear KS.

Thank you for that video. I've got a Knock Sensor fail on a GM Astra, and seeing you check the input has given me the energy to finally get my PC-Based scope installed on my laptop and prove the fault.
I'm starting out as a full time workshop since April, so my kit is not as advanced as yours (although electronics is my passion, and Im already a "very very very advanced" DIY'er), but I did get around to setting up my Hantek computer scope, and diagnosed an identical problem with a 2003 Opel Astra.
My background is in Aerospace system design for Rolls-Royce, but I have had to leave full time work due to illness so I've ended up setting up a small engineering shop in Madeira, Portugal (almost by accident|!)
My approach to diagnostics is similar to yours - "Prove the root cause then change the right part" - this approach is serving me well - I'm already inundated with work - I get all the weird problems - the stuff other garages hand off (weird diagnostics problems etc) , or won't take on ( complex oddities like Rolls-Royces and Land Rovers ). My favourite is cars that have had the "Parts Shotgun" and still aren't fixed!. It's really keeping me entertained!
Funny thing happened the other day - a guy arrived at the workshop with his new purchase - a very nice clean '02 Land Rover Discovery 2 V8.
These are very rare here - in fact, this is the only other V8 Land rover I know on the island! (Mine is the other one!)
He was very proud, and asked me to have a look at his new purchase (This is common, many garages (myself included) will give an "assessment" for free - usually the customer goes to the cheapest, and end up getting raped by a garage that doesn't fully understand the work)
Like you, I tell it like it is, and if they go elsewhere, then that's fine by me - I pride myself by being honest and fair, even if the customer isn't.
I immediately recognised that it was missing on at least 2 cylinders, and popped the bonnet to check it out.
Found 2 ignition leads adrift and not on the spark plug, and one completely failed! I plugged them back in and temporarily patched the third so it's running on 8 cylinders now.
I complimented him on finding such a clean example, and we had a chat about the car (I have an identical diesel variant of the same car also)
The customer went from "can you have a quick look at it and give me a quote" to " When can you take it in and sort it all out for me?".....
I'm taking the car in when he goes back to the mainland in 2 weeks!!! RESULT - I will have a decent amount of time to work on the car and wait for parts.
Keep up the good work - I enjoy your honest and realistic diagnostics and also picking up tips - I've just bought a "big nasty" of my own!!
And I'm looking into the various diagnostics options available here.
I'm sorted for a few manufacturers (VW Group, Land Rover, Mercedes) but as I do more diagnostics work, I could do with the easy access to circuit diagrams etc...

You may not be an 'Piezoelectric' expert but you sure do have a great understanding of electrical circuits, troubleshooting the use of meters and general electrical theory / concepts. I have been in the electrical construction, service and maintenance industry for over 30 years and few of my coworkers could do what you do. The use of data between modules as I see in your videos is a common practice in fire alarm systems and building automation systems. You would do very well servicing either, Better than many electricians I work with. I guess the big diffrance is you seem like you want to know how it works, many I work with could not be bothered to learn new things. Thanks for the videos, I wish your shop was closer to me. I would love to bring you my 3 valve 5.4 Ford to look at.

Eric you're the man. Not 100% related to this video, but I just helped a neighbor diagnose a bad wheel sensor on his caddy CTS. we hooked up my crappy old matco scope and spun the hub. one side made a nice waveform but very low, other side amplitude was 3 times as high.
I think you showed this or something similar in an ABS video a while back, comparing signals side-to-side.. just wanted to say thanks for getting me on the right track.

This is the exact same way i was taught to test these guys, manifold smack and all. Awesome video as always. Earlier this year I had my first one rusted so bad the top was completely gone and was damn near hollow. Took over an hour to get the little bastard out. Thanks for the video Eric.

Great video. Will keep the knock sensors in mind. So in the future I may need to replace. My 2001 GMC has 175000 miles on her . So when she gets a few miles on it .I wont be surprised when the go bad.

Good video on how to diagnose bad knock sensors. If your going to replace gm knock sensors the first rule of the job is use delco knock sensors. I have a friend who i tried to tell him to use delco knock sensors. He went to autozone. He has replaced them 4 times now.

Been chasing this problem on my Firebird, always circuit one low volts. Thought I had replaced both sensors and the harness, code came back almost immediately, its been on and off since then. This is great information, I'll start looking at this more, maybe I bought a bad sensor.

For our reference Eric, Piezoelectric devices are used to measure pressures by the generation of voltage. Piezoelectric sensors are constructed from alumina ceramics, metallized quartz, single crystals, or ultrasonic transducer materials that make up a bi-directional transducer capable of converting stress into an electric potential. Th e piezoelectric materials consist of polarized ions within the crystal. As pressure is applied on the piezoelectric material some mechanical deformation occurs in the polarized crystal, which produces a proportional output charge due to the displacement in the ions. Uses of this type of sensor in the automotive industry include piezoelectric accelerometers, piezoelectric force sensors, and piezoelectric pressure sensors.

Good tip on using ac voltage on dmm to test them, I never tried that but good solution if not got a scope or don't want drag it out and got dmm on hand . 👍
Modern resonant tuned knock sensors not so easy test by tapping like wideband knock sensors and need you simulate knock via fuel starvation to test sensors accurately .
Nice to know you can actually get a reading on the low AC volt scale of a DMM. I would have called it just based on the difference of the voltages between the 2 sensors.

Fine video, been looking at recurring knock sensor after cleaning motor. Now know how to check.
Gaskets and sensors, harness on order after i get a pry bar and check with multimeter. Didnt know they are 1 wire sensors so will checl grounds too!

Awesome vid eric! I think of knock sensors as microphones. They pick up vibrations and amplify them to the pcm which can tell when its knocking
most are piezoelectric elements, and one use of them is mics :) so that works

Just had this occur on my 2004 GMC Sierra pickup. Had to order the parts where ever I was getting them from, so I decided to check around various places to source the parts. Funny how the price changes depending on where you get it from. The Chevy dealership wanted $99 each. The local AutoZone parts store could get them in a day for $72 each. Then I just happened to take a chance and ran the part number through the WalMart website and lo and behold.....$35 each, shipped to the local store for free in two days. All prices were for AC Delco OEM parts. WalMart even showed the wiring harness from the sensors to the connector on the top of the engine was available for $42. Gotta love competition.

What I'm wondering is how the two wires made a duel trace? Was there a 3rd wire I didn't see? I'll watch it again, maybe I missed something.

Good show. Mine shows up as bank 2 which I suspect is the rear but I'll change both.
great video on how to test them. but to be honest the part of Canada I'm in these sensors get so bad, especially the rear one the its just been a common practice that if its setting codes for them, the intake comes off, because 99% of the time that rear one is so rotten with rust and corrosion its disintegrated to nothing, and most of the time it won't even come out. and out of all that I have done at least every 8 out of 10 the valley cover has to be replaced also along with the seals. the rear hole is usually so rotten the cover can't be salvaged. The local auto wrecker was getting to know me pretty well for a while, in the course of a month I think I was there 6 times, and got all the good valley covers they had. I actually got lucky on one trip. the sensors and harness had just been done to that engine as well as the silicone dams, so everything was brand new and came apart nice, so I got and extra harness and 2 sensors from that one.

I allways set my AC same as the outside temp(or 2 degrees celsius under) after i made the mistake setting the temp max low to cool my self down. I had very bad cold for two weeks after that.

I did mine 3 years back and the dorman wiring harness seems to have worked ok. I did as the service bulletin said , was to put a bead of silicone in front of the sensor to deflect any water from pooling around the rubber plug. Not sure if that even does anything but hey . LOL
