Forces seems to follow the design mentality of a Sega CD launch title. As in it's really an interactive movie, or as I've heard someone say it, an "interactive" "movie"
The Mania team handed Sega a proposal for stages to be remade in Mania, and Sega rejected almost all of them. Also, Takashi Iizuka confirmed in a Japanese interview that the Mania team was very pressed for time towards the end. There's a reason the PC version was delayed.
That was Sega of Europe. It was delayed because it wasn't done. The version on consoles was incomplete, but the console manufacturers were like "nope, can't change the release date." That's why the PC version had updates that consoles didn't get till later. (And they arrived significantly later because updates/patches have to be reviewed by the manufacturers).
Of course Sega rejected most remakes. This is the company that'd be much happier shoving Werehogs and "Dank dialogue for teh kids" down our throats. Forces clearly shows that. I wish SEGA would just relinquish Classic Sonic entirely and put it into public domain. SEGA Clearly doesn't want anything to do with Sonic that might save it. They're more than happy to keep burning money and good will. Hell, they even shoved MALWARE DRM into the Mania PC version, just cause they suck that badly.
I know it isnt much consolation, but there is going to be a patch coming out for Sonic Mania Plus that apparently adds level transitions for all the acts that are missing them. Because of this, it really does play into your idea of the devs being rushed by Sega to ship out the game quickly. Probably to make sure this came out before Forces. On the plus side, at least the Devs are listening and want to give the fans the game they deserve. Hopefully we get Mania 2 with allows the devs freedom to make the game they want instead of playing to what Sega demands of a game.
My main criticism with Mania is the reusage of old stages. But at least most of them have unique level designs. Hopefully a sequel to Mania ditches them and add new, original zones.
Yeah but I kind of wish there were better area transitions than just eggman whipping out the phantom plot device and then suddenly you're in the next zone

Small correction, Izuka was actually the one to suggest the new zones, not the re-imagined ones. Whiteheads idea was originally just to have more of a compilation of re imagined stages rather than an actual full game.
I totally agree with you on Hydrocity Zone, it just seemed to be the most unimaginative stage of them all, from the lack of transitions at the start AND finish, the lack of original gimmicks (other than the boats and those swirly bubble things) and even the music not being as good as it could be. It just seems that they threw the stage in at the last minute and hoped nobody would notice.
As much as I loved the returning classic stages (Lava Beef was my favourite), I do kind of wish that they added in more newer stages, because the original ideas they came up with were so much fun.

I almost wanted to drop the game during chemical plant but after getting to studiopolis I felt absolutely elated and fell in love with the game. I am praying for another game in this style with all original zones.

Why not Emerald Hill instead of Green Hill again? The other reason is because the story is chopped off and to forcefully (no pun intended lol) connect it to Sonic Forces, you HAVE to play that game to get the full story and we all know how Force's treated my boi classic Sonic. It just feels incomplete if you don't play that game and it lacks that really satisfying feeling that the previous 2D games had. The final level and the secret final battle weren't as good as Sonic 2 and S3&K. Also, I don't know why I don't get the same feeling of world exploration as Sonic 3 & Knuckles even though the map of the world is right on the title screen and the levels themselves are beautiful. Maybe because the Ruby teleports you all over the place or maybe because we've already explored most of the levels before? Everything else is just perfect, I still love the game. I know Christian and the team wanted to create an all new game and that would've been amazing but the higher ups wanted to bring back old levels. Again. Hopefully SEGA doesn't intervine next time lol I'll be extremely hyped again like with Mania's announcement. Let me know if some of you guys felt the same way, differently or have something to add, I'd like to read your thoughts. I think that if/when we ever get another Sonic game with ALL original stages, it's gonna be a huge breath of fresh air and THEN I'll think "Man, I missed this!" But I'm a huge fan of Oil Ocean and Hydrocity and it was nice playing through them again, and I hadn't replayed Sonic 2 or 3 in such a long time that it wasn't a slog. Though admittedly, Green Hill (like in every other game) just felt like some sort of mandatory right of passage. It's like waiting in line to get into a theme park-- "hey you gotta do it, but once it's over, then we get to the good part!" It's mindless and I'm not even thinking about it once it's over. ...Err, point is, it's less that I'm sick of reused levels, and more that I'm going to really enjoy them being gone. If you *only* look at Mania as laying the groundwork for a new classic series and getting us all back in the groove, then yeah "absolute 10/10 flawless game, can't wait for the sequel".

To be honest, I personally don't agree much with your argument, but I think it is more to do with my view on the game than how much I like it. When I think of sonic mania, I think of it more of a celebration of classic sonic rather than a whole new game. This is likely the reason recycling old stages didn't bother me in the slightest. After all, the trailer for the game showed words like "a celebration of the past" and stuff like that.

I totally get ya on Hydrocity and Oil Ocean Zones, I really love them but they do feel a bit soulless compared to the rest. The originals were pretty mazelike already, so without like a map or perfect knowledge of the zone layouts they kinda just blend in too much with the originals. It especially doesn't help since Hydrocity 1 and 2 and just Act 1 of Oil Ocean don't have very grand spectacles of any kind or major redesigns like the other stages in the game. I still really love them, it's really hard to hate Hydrocity in any way (Except when you spell it as Hydro City), and Oil Ocean felt like a big improvement and much more enjoyable, but still, I wish there was more going on with those stages.
Exactly. The design principles on those stages are different from the rest of them. There's almost no modern flair at all and they just end up feeling the same as their original counterparts.
I think it’s really cool that the old levels came back because then you can play them with new assets and move sets, so it’s the same, but not the same.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sega released Sonic 1 on everything. Seriously, they should have given us a different game for free when the PC version was delayed.
As much as I adore Sonic Mania, I agree about zone transitions. One of my favourite little things about Sonic 3 was that you could see how you got from zone to zone as if the world felt more connected, which is why I was bummed out when that fun little detail was missing in Sonic Mania
Funnily enough, an update came to Mania where they fixed some issues a lot of people had Mostly with the fact there were no transitions for some levels, now there is transistions Like with Flying Battery to Press Garden, the character(s) go on gliders after beating the giant Spider mecha and arrive at Press Garden's newspaper factory thing Metal Sonic was also changed for his second phase to represent a sort of hybrid of Chaos Titan and Metal Madness/Overlord, so no giant wall of cheesed death anymore I could go on, but there's videos on what's new in the update so I'll let you people find those Anyway, great review as always, love the fact you do say things that a lot of other reviewers don't say or even notice
Nice to see more of a critical video about Sonic Mania, I'm not really into hyping or giving completely positive reviews. Also hoping for that Sly video some day.
Comparing Mania to Forces is like comparing Good hardworking student's project to other student's project who is trying to do it with no effort and fails horribly creating Sonic Forces.
On the contrary I'd say comparing Forces to Mania is like comparing a student who had to make a wooden house with the most talented students of the class to a student who had to make a wooden replica of the empire state building with not enough time and paired up with the idiots of the class. One group made a great box but chances are if the students were swapped the results would be still similar.
I think the best way to run the franchise going forward is to just have Sonic Team focus on making 3D games while the Sonic Mania developers take over 2D Sonic completely. Run it as a two-series franchise. Classic Sonic in the Mania series, Modern Sonic in the Sonic Team games, with both filling in the time between each other so neither team has to bend over backwards making yearly releases. That's what I hope they'll do, anyway. - Lewis

12:29 Classic Sonic zones don't typically start with "Egg," how about "Silk Station Zone" or "Air Web Zone"? Maybe "Robot Hive Zone"? 15:12 I get the same feeling. I think it's similar to something in Wet Dry World in Super Mario 64, the so-called "Negative Emotional Aura".
You're one of the few "sonic reviewers" (as well as other games) that I actually agree with most of the time, and when I don't agree, I can still understand where you're coming from. Forces felt like a fanfiction made into a game, and I couldn't help but feel that gameplay-wise it was a worse version of Generations. Also I completely agree that they reuse the same levels over and over again, goddamn. The last game I played that had both new original content and nostalgic content from past games in the series was Super Mario Odyssey, and with that I really felt like I was traveling and exploring new worlds, despite them having familiar elements. Idk. Just a random thought there. Very nice review. I always enjoy seeing new uploads from you. Keep up the good work!!

I totally get ya on Hydrocity and Oil Ocean Zones, I really love them but they do feel a bit soulless compared to the rest. The originals were pretty mazelike already, so without like a map or perfect knowledge of the zone layouts they kinda just blend in too much with the originals. It especially doesn't help since Hydrocity 1 and 2 and just Act 1 of Oil Ocean don't have very grand spectacles of any kind or major redesigns like the other stages in the game. I still really love them, it's really hard to hate Hydrocity in any way (Except when you spell it as Hydro City), and Oil Ocean felt like a big improvement and much more enjoyable, but still, I wish there was more going on with those stages.
Exactly. The design principles on those stages are different from the rest of them. There's almost no modern flair at all and they just end up feeling the same as their original counterparts.
My main problem was the second act of oil ocean, the fog literally made my eyes water. I have to skip it every time for that reason.
I had to quit my original playthrough of sonic 2 because of oil ocean zone. Just couldn't figure out how to get out before the time ran out.
I think it’s really cool that the old levels came back because then you can play them with new assets and move sets, so it’s the same, but not the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sega released Sonic 1 on everything. Seriously, they should have given us a different game for free when the PC version was delayed.

As much as I adore Sonic Mania, I agree about zone transitions. One of my favourite little things about Sonic 3 was that you could see how you got from zone to zone as if the world felt more connected, which is why I was bummed out when that fun little detail was missing in Sonic Mania
Funnily enough, an update came to Mania where they fixed some issues a lot of people had
Mostly with the fact there were no transitions for some levels, now there is transistions
Like with Flying Battery to Press Garden, the character(s) go on gliders after beating the giant Spider mecha and arrive at Press Garden's newspaper factory thing
Metal Sonic was also changed for his second phase to represent a sort of hybrid of Chaos Titan and Metal Madness/Overlord, so no giant wall of cheesed death anymore
I could go on, but there's videos on what's new in the update so I'll let you people find those
Anyway, great review as always, love the fact you do say things that a lot of other reviewers don't say or even notice
With the new stage transitions being added part of this review will be irrelevant

Nice to see more of a critical video about Sonic Mania, I'm not really into hyping or giving completely positive reviews. Also hoping for that Sly video some day.
Comparing Mania to Forces is like comparing Good hardworking student's project to other student's project who is trying to do it with no effort and fails horribly creating Sonic Forces.
On the contrary I'd say comparing Forces to Mania is like comparing a student who had to make a wooden house with the most talented students of the class to a student who had to make a wooden replica of the empire state building with not enough time and paired up with the idiots of the class.
One group made a great box but chances are if the students were swapped the results would be still similar.

I think the best way to run the franchise going forward is to just have Sonic Team focus on making 3D games while the Sonic Mania developers take over 2D Sonic completely. Run it as a two-series franchise. Classic Sonic in the Mania series, Modern Sonic in the Sonic Team games, with both filling in the time between each other so neither team has to bend over backwards making yearly releases. That's what I hope they'll do, anyway.

The worst part about Sonic Mania is that it's plot is directly tied into Forces.
You're one of the few "sonic reviewers" (as well as other games) that I actually agree with most of the time, and when I don't agree, I can still understand where you're coming from.
Forces felt like a fanfiction made into a game, and I couldn't help but feel that gameplay-wise it was a worse version of Generations. Also I completely agree that they reuse the same levels over and over again, goddamn.
The last game I played that had both new original content and nostalgic content from past games in the series was Super Mario Odyssey, and with that I really felt like I was traveling and exploring new worlds, despite them having familiar elements. Idk. Just a random thought there.
