@@TORXINYUEXAVIERSTUDENTIs this comment seriously trying to imply Sonic 06 "was not that bad"? Yeah, one of the worst games ever made is "not that bad". Sure.
Ah yes, I distinctly remember all those times Shadow summoned giant beanstalks with that damn green Chaos Emerald. He was all about those beanstalks. ... Seriously, they were that pressed for emerald power ideas, and they still didn't include teleportation? You know, basically the only power we've ever seen from an individual Chaos Emerald? Chaos Control?
@warbossgegguz679 Aren't they trying to fix that as of late and did rescind that statement...that being said teleportation does kinda save the time just waiting for the vine to get you to a point.
@@zjzr08 I would LOVE if they stopped the whole "Classic sonic and modern sonic are 2 sperate universes" thing but idk. It's one of the many things Forces introduced that's extremely stupid, despite Generations making it clear it was a time travel thing. I figured they used vines because it would make the mechanic still involve platforming and not just totally break movement by giving you the ability to literally warp anywhere in any direction. I said what I said because even if you disagree with that, arguing about it on the basis of "canon" is extremely autistic.
@warbossgegguz679 I'm not sure what autism has to do with that idea, but adding what was already known abilities of the Chaos Emerald, does make it feel that it's more connected with the series a bit, adding a sense of continuity and consistency to build on, which many long franchise fans usually want.
The emerald power selection is much better if you use the right analog stick, it works like a weapon wheel in a modern FPS and it's so much faster. Personally I like all the emerald powers because of how much the levels open up with new routes when you go to replay them, it's like a better version of the Wisps.
kind of crazy they took their time with Frontiers and it turned out really good and then followed it up by not finishing a game before release. i mean its like 90% finished, but damn. this was supposed to be a real return to form to show they can make more than one good finished game within a decade...
Imagine if they made Frontiers into Knuckles Frontiers. Instead of going super for every boss, they gave Knuckles unique Chaos Emerald abilities like they do in this game to combat bosses. Then you could turn them into smaller versions to combat enemies / mini-bosses as a reward for playing with the story attempting to explain that using them as a massive boost for the Titans drained them and they need to recharge, or something. Would make more sense then Sonic just losing the emeralds every time the plot needed him too.
I find it weird that when it came to my playthrough of Superstars, I found none of the glitches on my own. It doesn't mean I think that anyone's glitchy experiences are invalid, just... Feels weird cuz it feels like when I want to try the glitches, I'm trying to force it at that point.
I was about to say this. I encountered *very* few glitches during my playthrough, outside of the average amount I'd find in any game nowadays. And I played on the switch, which some claim would likely be the buggiest port
@rcbmaverickhunterpolarity1544 Yes, but this was like the midnight release. I played it the moment it came out. They fixed it the next morning. Lagoon City Act A had atrocious graphical glitches with Amy and Trip's textures flickering like crazy before the patch, and the overworld would teleport me to the final zone where I would fall into a black void whenever you went to the shop when prompted to do so. The shop glitch still exists, but it happened everytime prepatch.
@@broom673 Yet again, so did I. I played through the midnight release, and yet I was still weirdly without extensive glitches. Kind of just played the game and didn't have any problems. I did admittedly replay the first stage, so I didn't get past Speed Jungle, so I imagine any patches would have fixed my experiences, since at that point the only glitches would be ones I invoke, like the Non-Drain Super.
while we have a lot of the same complaints, i found myself really enjoying the game. i didn’t encounter many bugs, mostly just small visual/audio ones. the bad boss fights are definitely my biggest complaint. i like what it does, and would recommend it-on sale of course-but i understand your complaints
7:10 I think that sound effect plays during the Time Eater fight in the 3DS version of Generations whenever the Time Eater would fire lasers at Classic Sonic during the 2D parts of the fight.
I want to like this game i really do. I genuinely think that a good chunk of the gimmicks are genuinely good. Yes they are older ideas, but they try to change up the core foundation of these gimmicks and while some of them i don't like some _i really like_ like egg station act 2, speed jungle act 3's dark level, people tend to hate but i love the aesthetically variant areas in the dark areas, cyber Station is just good, and golden capital act 2 is actually a fun challenge minus the automation. Which turn leads to.. the bosses. How do you somehow make a worse boss lineup than the original _sonic rush_
Ok so what happened at the very start shows I’m not the only one who encountered this. I quit out of a level once and it spawned me in the final boss area, I then proceeded to fall through the floor collision. It was so funny I filmed it lol
I just had to think about the second dicvision Manager of Sega wanting Sonic to "surpass Mario". Yeah, looking at this that's not going to happen soon I'd suppose.

Like most of the bad Sonic games. I also don't understand why they released this like a year after Frontiers. I know it was made by a different team, but couldn't they have released this in the next year? An extra year would allow for more polish.
Sadly Sonic Fans will still eat it up and say “SONIC IS IN A GREAT SPOT RIGHT NOW WITHIN THE PAST 15 YEARS!” When in reality the only real successes were the movies and Sonic Frontiers. I guess Murder of Sonic as well but that’s not a mainline game.
I dont think that there's ever a good time to rush a game out, but this has to be one of the worst times for them to rush a sonic release. Right next to mario wonder? Right before Spider-man? Like c'mon sega you are contractually obligated to at least PRETEND how your sonic games perform.
@@akiradkcn I don't really think so. Late October to mid-December is considered the holiday season and is the end of the fiscal year, so they probably rushed it to end on a high note. Also why they released Like a Dragon Gaiden within weeks of it. Gotta make as much bank as possible for the yearly reports. Not even being cynical, this is just a standard practice in the toy and video game industry. It's when you sacrifice the quality of said product for the sake of meeting that deadline (as was clearly done here with the patch that's 2/3 the size of the game itself) that I take issue.

I think it is a good base for a Sonic series like New Super Mario Bros or Donkey Kong Country Returns. Sonic Team/Sega tend to jump from idea to idea without really allowing time for polish and improvement. If they take the time to make a sequel to this, it could be great. As it stands, it's a fun game. I had a good time with it.
@@sahaprocks7751I think the visuals of this SMOKE NSMB, but I would more so agree because I feel exactly the same about this as I do NSMB: It's not AMAZING or really equal to stuff like Mania or the GBA/DS games, but it's still solid enough and fun enough that I can't be like "NEVER TOUCH IT!" or say it's shit. The only real issue is the price tag and lack of polish technically, but those are more of a Sega thing than anything else.
It’s my theory that Tee Lopes was too busy with TMNT and it’s DLC to 100% work on the games soundtrack, so they had to bring Jun in to help pick up the slack
I was super unsure about this game for awhile but I am super glad a passionate Sonic fan like you informed me of your issues with it. Thank you for all you suffer through, Rad.
Played through this game seven times, I know for a fact that calling this game "a hot mess" is factually untrue. I'm not a "Sonic apologist", I don't have to be, it's just untrue. It's not perfect, obviously, nothing is - but claiming it's "a hot mess" is just absolutely crazy.
@@Jdudec367 Had two bugs in seven playthroughs. One crash, and one time the camera was stuck elsewhere on the hub. That's it. Playing since release day.
Played this game on release and didn't have a single issue with it, the amount of glitches showcased here really surprised me! That said, I don't get the hate for the soundtrack, even the Jun tracks. I love the genesis soundfont's character, and I think it's very "classic sonic" personally
The competition was never in Sonics favor if you look at sales figures TBH. Sonic got popular in the US, not so much in Japan, but nowhere near as popular as mario in either.
Legit I barely even *used* the emerald powers outside of when they were prompted, besides the avatar and bullet abilities (and sometimes the slow ability). They just felt *really* situational for the most part (funny how the only two that are really useful are the first two you get in the game). Also, it's a serious pet peeve of mine that SEGA's been trying to erase the existence of super forms from any character that isn't a male hedgehog (freaking *"super-powers"* are you kidding me?!). Like, i can live with other characters only having a lighter hue (honestly Super Amy's lighter pink actually looks kinda neat imo), but *why* are they just NOT allowed to have super forms, *period?*
I did not encounter any of these bugs. I don't know if they were patched post-release or if the switch version didn't have them to start with. The bosses were still annoying, and not in a fun way.
8:50 The big idea from what i can remember, is that super forms got retconned so that only male hedgehogs can use them or something stupid like that, atleast canonically.
I played through the whole normal story mode as mainly Tails or Amy and the only major thing that I had a problem with was the bosses. I honestly don't know if it's a good thing you can't BS your way to victory like most of Sonic 2's bosses or bad that some of them overstay their welcome. Maybe a bit of both. Anyway, I don't think I encountered any gamebreaking glitches in my playthrough. I did play the Steam version and I have no idea how it stacks up to the other versions in terms of polish. Still better than Sonic Advance 2. Nothing can be more bullshit than that game.
I like Sonic Superstars, aside from visually the parts of the soundtrack credited to Jun Senoue and the final boss the game is exactly what I wanted out of a new classic sonic game. I see where people come from with their complaints but the game has just been fun for me. Now if only it wasn't $60 because the game doesn't have $60 worth of content. Also, how the heck do other people find more bugs in these games than I do
Yep! Biggest flaw BY FAR is just that this shouldn't be $60. Mania was $20 ffs. That said, I like the visuals personally. Idk maybe it's just the Sonic the Fighters fan in me but i like seeing the retro designs in 3d and NOT weird and desaturated like in forces. I love well done animated sprite work, but I don't think this game fails to capture the visual style of the Classics (at least personally).
it’s kind of weird how Superstars says “knuckles has super powers” which once again leads people down the road that everyone but Sonic’s super forms have been retconned away from canon. but Frontiers has Knuckles mention his super form, on Ares island…so obviously it does exist, but superstars (which only came out a year later) once again refuses to say super form when referring to knuckles and other characters…it’s so weird.
It's Alright. If you're looking for Mania 2, no. If you're looking for a decent 2D sonic, it's fine. Sort of like the Advance games imo. Like 7/10. above average, but not "amazing". Also WAY over priced. Didn't have the same amount of gliches when I played it on Ryujinx but idk. I think rob played the PS5 version so maybe avoid that one?
I didn't get the game and thinks it looks bad since launch date and had a feeling there was a catch. I don't think it's that good to be worth a 7 or more from just looking at the game since Rob already showed a lot of the same issues that I saw from other people even me strongly agreeing when he talked about the level themes.
@@nerodoesart5886 "I love going on message boards and complaining about games I've never played" I like how more than half of this comment section seems to be people that just assumed it was going to be trash and came here for confirmation bias. @@warbossgegguz679 Yeah, of course. I didn't get it since I didn't think it was worth getting and I watched some people that I actually trust playing the games and I didn't buy it. I don't have to play the game to tell if it's bad or not... I just know. I thought frontiers wasn't going to be good, I then saw a lot of praise and bought it out of curiosity then I hated it and even the fandom more for giving it a pass and blocking any critique from anyone without them on there knees and saying "don't get me wrong the game is still good, but..." excuse. I saw Superstars thought it didn't look good and it feel into my predictions, concerns, what I possibly thought was going to happen then it HAPPENED. So, of course I didn't buy and I'm going to buy something that I believe is a bad game. I listened to many people's impressions and from my own observation to give myself a full thought about it. It told me it, so maybe you guys missed it? The L and R power switching I had no idea about, but it shows you that during the power demos and settings.
I didn’t even know about the L and R switching, just the joystick thing

Fr. Sonic fans hate sonic
"Don't fuck with us Sonic fans, we hate Sonic just as much as you do."

@@TORXINYUEXAVIERSTUDENT real
@@TORXINYUEXAVIERSTUDENTIs this comment seriously trying to imply Sonic 06 "was not that bad"? Yeah, one of the worst games ever made is "not that bad". Sure.

So much regret
Definitely true if you're buying the game at launch on two different platforms. I was lucky enough to get it for £38, and even then I feel robbed.
@@NintendanGX The $100+ on launch BS is why I never buy games on launch anymore, I wait for a discount before I even consider looking at a game

The farther we go down the Sonic game timeline, the hornier the thumbnails become
This is inevitable
I can't believe it's possible for Epic Games to shoehorn itself into Steam.
You know what’s hilarious, during the first phase of the cyber world boss fight, eggman’s laser doesn’t even hurt you.
This is an extremely "Chrischan-eque" complaint about this. Also, this is the Classic continuity, Shadow doesn't exist (that we know of).
@@warbossgegguz679 how in the fuck is this "chrischan-esque" complaint and also what the fuck does that even mean
@warbossgegguz679 I'm not sure what autism has to do with that idea, but adding what was already known abilities of the Chaos Emerald, does make it feel that it's more connected with the series a bit, adding a sense of continuity and consistency to build on, which many long franchise fans usually want.
I didn't know it was possible to make a Sonic boss fight feel like purgatory, but here we are.
Someone clearly hasn't fought the Iblis worm in Sonic '06.
The emerald power selection is much better if you use the right analog stick, it works like a weapon wheel in a modern FPS and it's so much faster.
Personally I like all the emerald powers because of how much the levels open up with new routes when you go to replay them, it's like a better version of the Wisps.
kind of crazy they took their time with Frontiers and it turned out really good and then followed it up by not finishing a game before release. i mean its like 90% finished, but damn. this was supposed to be a real return to form to show they can make more than one
good finished game within a decade...
The whole "No one hates X more than the fans" is especially true of Sonic.
Sonic Frontiers, & Knuckles
I'm honestly impressed that sonic fans have been abused so badly for so long, but are still hopeful each and every time a new game comes out.
The game was a glitchy disaster if you played before the day one patch.
@@broom673 Bro, I was a Day One Adopter
Super Knuckles with a hat was probably the most needed thing ive never thought of
7:10 I think that sound effect plays during the Time Eater fight in the 3DS version of Generations whenever the Time Eater would fire lasers at Classic Sonic during the 2D parts of the fight.
I swear, Sonic Superstars is probably THE MOST divisive game I’ve ever seen. Seems like you either love it or hate it, with no in-between.
Being Soft locked makes this game a true Sonic game.
I just had to think about the second dicvision Manager of Sega wanting Sonic to "surpass Mario". Yeah, looking at this that's not going to happen soon I'd suppose.
Sega wants Sonic to surpass Mario, but refuses to give any of the games the time and resources they need to accomplish that.

At least it controls pretty well. If only we could have the 3D games control well.

I dont think that there's ever a good time to rush a game out, but this has to be one of the worst times for them to rush a sonic release. Right next to mario wonder? Right before Spider-man? Like c'mon sega you are contractually obligated to at least PRETEND how your sonic games perform.
It was a coincidence
@@akiradkcn I don't really think so. Late October to mid-December is considered the holiday season and is the end of the fiscal year, so they probably rushed it to end on a high note. Also why they released Like a Dragon Gaiden within weeks of it. Gotta make as much bank as possible for the yearly reports.
Not even being cynical, this is just a standard practice in the toy and video game industry. It's when you sacrifice the quality of said product for the sake of meeting that deadline (as was clearly done here with the patch that's 2/3 the size of the game itself) that I take issue.
cant say the bugs are consistent on every platform tho. never experience close to this at all

Water is such a weird one though, mostly because I managed to glitch it into working *out* of the water a couple of times, not to mention I realised the controls for the cyber jellyfish were the same
I'll definitely be using that transformation glitch to cheese the final boss though, I still haven't finished it and don't feel like putting any more hours into it

The worst bug i had in SM2 was a crash and some models not loading (cube glitch) but compared to this game, in the words of radicalsoda it take the cake and shits on it

It’s more like the New Super Mario Bros series tbh. The more basic art style and 4 player multiplayer make that comparison bigger
@@sahaprocks7751I think the visuals of this SMOKE NSMB, but I would more so agree because I feel exactly the same about this as I do NSMB:
It's not AMAZING or really equal to stuff like Mania or the GBA/DS games, but it's still solid enough and fun enough that I can't be like "NEVER TOUCH IT!" or say it's shit. The only real issue is the price tag and lack of polish technically, but those are more of a Sega thing than anything else.

It's not perfect, obviously, nothing is - but claiming it's "a hot mess" is just absolutely crazy.

the press factory hub glitch happened to my friend and i in our play through. we were laughing so hard at it. i actually loved this game though.
The fact that Sega launched this game almost at the same time as Super Mario Wonder is comedy gold.
I just like that Speed Jungle is just what happened to Chemical Plant after it was abandoned.
Could you make a video describing how you would want a 3-D sonic game to be? With the story level design, etc.
You guys remember when Mario vs. Sonic was a serious competition? Now Mario's doing backflips while Sonic's in the hospital.
The competition was never in Sonics favor if you look at sales figures TBH. Sonic got popular in the US, not so much in Japan, but nowhere near as popular as mario in either.
@@warbossgegguz679Nah, Mario is more popular!
It's like the bare minimum of a video game
Hmm just like most Sonic games…
the best thing this game did was bring RadicalSoda back to Sonic content
YEAH I KNOW RIGHT, EVERYONE'S BEEN SAYING YHST IT'S REALLY GOOD AND IVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHAT THAT WAS ALL ABOUT
I did not encounter any of these bugs. I don't know if they were patched post-release or if the switch version didn't have them to start with. The bosses were still annoying, and not in a fun way.
8:50 The big idea from what i can remember, is that super forms got retconned so that only male hedgehogs can use them or something stupid like that, atleast canonically.
ok nvm just got to trips super form idk what the fuck sega is smokin
I don't remember the last time I really regretted buying a game at full price.
At least the TH-cam ads for the game were only 5 seconds long.
Knuckles levitating was canon as of Sonic Boom.
Yes. It’s amazing they haven’t changed their policy on that in 30 years.
The opinions I’ve seen on this game seem conflicting, people love it and hate it
It’s a fucking turd, but it’s a 2D sonic game so 35 year old virgins eat it up and hail it as a return to form.

I barely even complain about any game that I never played. This was the first.
