    Honestly though.... I think heavy metal testing is the most important thing. I'd rather have a protein powder that tastes completely gross but is safe than one that's delicious and contains lead.

      Which one do you think is the best? I can’t find good studies on which vegan protein has the least metals. Any suggestions?

    • @sadiedavenport
      @sadiedavenport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @@EviEhvee you know.... I haven't looked into it. I suppose I'd follow up with the brands that are willing to be transparent about their test results and see what they've found. I think protein powder can be really handy, but I myself have actually been adding beans to my smoothies. I know it sounds wacky, but I can't taste them. They just make smoothies thicker and they have the benefit of being a whole food, plus they're super economical! I cook a big batch in my instant pot and keep it in the fridge. A cup of beans (granted this is for a huge smoothie. You can also use silken tofu.) plus a serving of hemp seeds, and that's just about 25 grams of protein! It's not as simple or portable as protein powder, but it's way cheaper and I don't have to worry about heavy metals.
      Goodness, that was a long response. I hope that's helpful.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm 23 and on October 29th of this year (2019) I got diagnosed with stage 2A Hodgkins lymphoma. My first round of chemo was the day after Thanksgiving and my second round is tomorrow (once every two weeks for 5 months). I've been trying to change my diet. Slowly, but surely and vegan protein powders were on top of my list. So I appreciate the amount of effort you guys put into this for us. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 😊

I know this might sound crazy, but I believe cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm now happier, healthier, more fit, and my life is filled with purpose. Stay strong. You'll get through this and you will learn a lot about life and yourself through this journey. Please DM us on Instagram or Facebook (or send me an email) with your address and I'll send you a copy of my book. And don't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions. Much love, Leif

      Also what is your opinion about the heavy metals found in Vega's protein powders? Normally I would have thought that it was some kind of "anti-vegan" agenda, but Mic the Vegan made a video a while back saying that Vega really needed to clean up their protein.

    • @TheVeganGym
      @TheVeganGym  4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@theveganmusclemommy Thanks so much!! We'll always tell it like it is :-) Vega was acquired by Danone S.A. (Dannon if you live in the US) a few years ago. Their quality has noticeably dropped since then. We reached out to Vega and they told us that the Clean Label Project testing was wrong and misleading, but they wouldn't share their third party heavy metals testing results. That's just absurd. We only use Vega if we're in a pinch and there are no other options (or if we're doing a protein review haha). Thanks for the support!!

      Vivo protein is more of an acquired taste, and due to the nature of their (natural) ingredients, each batch can taste slightly different from the previous one, just like raw fruits and vegetables.
      The strong taste can be attributed to the the turmeric, which is why you should mix more than 10 oz of water to dilute it properly. -I find that ~16 oz of water works best.
      When it comes down to it, there simply isn't any other vegan protein that comes close to Vivolife. Some might taste "better" because of the artificial flavors and sweeteners, but Vivo beats them in overall quality.
      It should also be noted that Amazon was selling some really old (foul) batches that were well past their "best buy" date for quite some time. Try to buy direct.

    • @connorr605

      The Naked Nutrition pea protein powder does not have stevia. It uses organic coconut sugar. I haven't tried the vanilla yet, but I thought the chocolate one was decent when mixed with oat milk. At least it tastes better than hemp protein powders that I've tried in the past. I like how both the chocolate and vanilla flavors only have three total ingredients (pea protein, coconut sugar, and cacao or vanilla flavor). And the unflavored version is just one ingredient, pea protein.

What I love about them for my vegan friends is that you can actually add essential amino acids into the mix along with a multivitamin into the protein powder along with many other customizations. Sure I admit its not the best tasting, but you know exactly what is in it and it is literally the cleanest protein.

    I use the Naked Nutrition Pea Protein Powder with no flavor. I found that one to be the best because I can easily mask the chalking taste with the fruited and veggies I use in my smoothies. But I will definitely try the other vegan powders that scored the top 4 from your list.

    After reading and watching reviews, I decided to try Blessed. First of all, it''s pretty expensive and one scoop, compared to other powders, is huge. So, in comparison, ir is much more expensive per serving. It is very chalky and since I am sensitive to stevia, there is a pronounced after taste. I was also disappointed that the jars are only half filled. That is such a horrible waste. For a comoany who sells vegan products, I would expect you be to be more conscious of waste and packaging. I will use what I have ordered, but I highly doubt I will reorder.

    I tried VIVO life and absolutely hated it and no matter what kind of recipe I tried to hide it in it was very unpalatable to me so it was nice to see that plant fusion which is one I just got at the grocery store on a whim actually does really well in a lot of these categories. It is very smooth and very fine and easy to add to a smoothie or two pancakes and my only complaint is that it has a very strong Stevia flavor but if you are already used to Stevia then you’ll have no issues. I’ll just stick with that one because it’s very hard for me to get enough protein because I have very severe IBS and a lot of food triggers and sensitivities but that protein powder doesn’t bother me

    Vega Sport (vanilla) is my holy grail 🙌🏼 I’m so hyped it made it in your guys’ top 5 😂
    I also wanted to note that I am not vegan, but, I find plant-based protein powder to be much more pleasant as it makes my body feel great after a good workout, in comparison to the traditional Whey protein most of my gym buddies chug. Plant-based has made a huge difference in how my body feels and I’m hoping I can slowly transition to lessening meats and animal products I consume to really give my body the proper nutrients it needs in a much healthier way! Awesome video, guys! The taste-test reactions were hilarious to watch. 😂

    Very thoughtful and informative video. I just have to put it out there that I really like the taste of Vivo Life protein powder and the Salted Maca Caramel is my favorite flavor. I was shocked by the taste tests here! I've been vegan for 7 years and have tasted so many vegan protein powders, including many included in this video and Vivo Life tasted better than them all in my opinion. Of course, everyone has different tastes, and some people won't like it, but I just wanted to add my opinion here since I'm seeing people comment that it's mainly famous youtubers/influencers who are hocking Vivo in order to make money. Their banana cinnamon flavor is also really tasty too😋

    • @TheVeganGym
      @TheVeganGym  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank YOU for sharing your thoughts! As we've mentioned in other comments, we were ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED to discover our ratings for Vivo Life protein. Based on all the amazing reviews we've heard, we were very confused. But a few other commenters have noted that they felt the same way after trying it. I guess the only logical conclusion is that the taste is highly polarizing. Some people love it and some people hate it. That's pretty strange in my opinion, but I have no other conclusion. Despite our poor taste ratings, they still placed fairly well among the competition and we very much admire the mission and eco-friendliness of the Vivo Life company. Thank you for your comment! With gratitude, Leif

We were using Vegan Smart for awhile as it tastes amazing. But I am super stoked right now on KOS Chocolate and Chocolate / Peanut butter... It is the first one that i have found tastes amazing using just water and not almond milk.. For whatever reason I found nut milks like almond left me bloated and gassy, so being able to drink one with just water as the liquid and have it taste amazing has been huge. Hope you guys get a chance to try it.

      Hahaha some of them were REALLY GROSS!! And yeah, we were really surprised some of these didn't rank higher in taste too. Thanks for your comment and view Natalie! :-)

      As long as you can stand to drink it, taste is prolly the least important criteria. You can hide the taste.

      @@mimib5913 not for me, taste is really important... I already struggle as it is to get enough calories in, i need to enjoy it or i literally skip meals. Smoothies/shakes are my least favorite type of meal, ive had to make other protein snacks so i dont waste my money :/

    I've tried almost all of these. Unless you're making a smoothie none of these are very good tbh. The only vegan protein I can honestly say is worth drinking by itself is the Planta Banana Maple French Toast. Highly recommend giving it a try.
