Hi, I'm new to your channel. I wanted to ask, is it true that having a protein shake after my workout will knock me out of ketosis?? I've started keto this week and I've been having a protein shake after my workout for the last 5 years. Its a healthy one, but I was told that because whey protein is to lean, will knock you out of Ketosis. If this is true, can I add 2 tablespoons of peanut butter inside the shake? Will in counter this effect and keep me in Ketosis?

Awesome nugget about the insulin spike stopping fat loss and the nuance about adding the fat. This is something I've been wondering. Just ordered my pea protein. Thanks Thomas!
I've been taking whey isolate for the last 3 to 4 months. I check my glucose levels one hour after and then 2 hours. And this is also with having food at the same time. I've never seen more than a 10 to 15 point spike. 2 hours later it's back to normal. I was pre Diabetic, keto and intermittent fasting brought me back to normal.
I definately agree with the Sun Warrior recommendation! It was the cleanest& most superior vegan protein I had found, back when I was eating a vegetarian/ vegan diet.
I know this video is old, but I have now been on keto for a year and a half. I have just started a major heavy resistance training program 5 weeks ago, so this protein video is really helping me out. I had no idea whey protein concentrate would spike insulin to bring fat burn to a hault. Thank you!
Thank you for the video. Sadly after two years of supplementing myself with high quality protein I decided to stop doing it. My body totally rejects its consumption now, I developed some kind to intolenrance. I learned how to eat real food instead and my muscle gain rate is the same. No bcaa, no whey, no glutamine, no preworkout, etc. Used that money into real food. Just a strict ketogenic nutrition plan with intermitent carbs and my gains still rocks. But you really need to be very disciplined, no short cuts or cheats for a very long time.
Whey protein isolate has always been tricky for me. I had GB seven months ago. The surgeon really pushed it whey. I have lost 120lbs so far. I am keeping one shake, 20g of protein a day in my diet. I had gone full keto about months after surgery. I don't do fasting and don't agree with it after GB, but i am still losing about 3lbs a week. I am 40lbs from my goal.

We'll see how that turns out! Btw, the price for their protein is not bad at all. I hope the quality is good as well.
Bought Sun Warrior for myself a couple weeks ago, haven’t been able to get my husband to get into any kind of healthy routine, take a multi, no healthy supplements, nothing! He’s fit and works out mostly because he’s in the military... anyway, Sun Warrior is the ONLY thing I’ve been able to get him to willingly do lol he loves it! It is really gaining popularity now so I hope they don’t start raising the prices like a lot of other companies do.
Actually, when I was in my regular routine, I would drink a whey protein shake early because I usually did circuit training or cross training early which helped, I later followed up my day with aminos and a little collagen for recovery or a recovery shake...because I would do my weight regimen midday.. the rest of the day I would just eat really good foods and I also take vitamins and antioxidants. I plan to use pea protein as my staple after watching your video because I actually prefer vegetable based over others... my metabolism has always been high and so the one whey shake a day actually helps me because I don't consume breads or large amounts of carbs in a day...I actually hardly ever/ almost never eat breads....good video and thanks because I really wasn't that knowledgeable about pea proteins......
I started using split peas as a replacement for egg whites. It digests a lot better for me. But I may cut out whey, and see how I feel. I concur with the rice protein, I felt very bloated using it, and seemed to give me digestive issues as well.
Leucine induced insulin secretions, insulin spike does not equates to increased blood sugar. It's what you eat before and after the consumption of leucine that affect the glucose level in your body. So if you don't consume enough calories for a heavy workout, leucine can cause hypoglycemia
The problem with any protein is alot of people replace a meal with them, instead of using them like they should be as a supplement. Always get your macros from whole foods but if you need to get some protein every once in a while from a protein powder get it.
I used several types of whey proteins my whole life and I just using pea protein for last year. I must say, pea protein is much much better than whey in terms of results.
That is false there are more heavy metals in farmed animal fat than plants.. but if a plant does have heavy metals it is easily removed by the fiber the plant has something meat cannot do.

My grass-fed whey protein isolate has 2380mg of luecine & the pea protein he recommends has 2614mg of luecine. Therefore the pea protein spikes insulin more than the whey protein. Protein powders have different amino formulations so insulin responses vary by manufacturer not the type of protein. Furthermore my preferred whey protein has protein fractions to aid digestion. I tried Sun Warrior and found it was gritty whereas the whey has a smooth texture.
Whey isolate typically has 10% Leucine by weight ~ 2.5g/25g scoop. The pea protein you tout has roughly the same 2.6g leucine/25g scoop. Same amount of Leucine would imply the same insulin spike assuming the absorption is same. What's your evidence that Leucine from pea protein is absorbed, less bio available, or more slowly released through digestion than that from whey protein? If you are a healthy person an insulin spike is a perfectly normal and useful part of an anabolic process.
One of the most thorough videos I've seen with good scientific backing. I do however, recommend that people do additional research on their own. I found a high-quality whey isolate that's free of lactose and artificial sweeteners. Consider myself subscribed.
What is the best protein post workout for a diabetic? This was an extremely informative video as I've been using ON Whey and others for years and now I know why the struggle! Thank you👍🏽
Hi I'm a type 2 diabetic, I was wondering if you found the answer to this question, I was thinking of maybe adding 2-3 raw egg yolks to the my whey protein isolate shake to lower the insulin spike by slowing the rate my body absorbs the protein. Any thoughts on that? Any help is appreciated.
Thank you for the insight. I am just starting and lost 6 lbs my first week. This information was very helpful. I agree gluten is bad. Try to do gluten free.
I definitely agree with this. I switched to pea protein after using whey for years. Seen some good results from it and I stopped getting break outs too.
Sure, if you consume whey protein with water it's going to spike your insulin but most people have it mixed in a smoothie with healthy fats and I'm sure that slows down the absorption and the insulin Spike.
I'd like to point out that most people of European descent have an easier time processing dairy products. Dairy has been used by Europeans for thousands to the point where they are more "genetically connected."
Hey Thomas I saw you at BLVD burger in camarillo on Saturday as you were leaving didn't get a chance to say hi but what is your go to meal there. thanks for all the awesome videos.
Dr. Eric Berg says that we need to add some fat to protein shakes in order to buffer the spike in insulin. You are saying that the protein would spike insulin and adding fat would be instantly stored as fat. Help!
If there are carbs in play, then yes. But don't bother with this; if you use iso whey, it should be absorbed by your body rather quickly and at the end of the day it depends on your macros if you stay in keto because you want to have around 75% of your total calories from fats which is not that easy if you try to avoid heavy Omega 6 fats. If you eat meat then protein powder is not really neccessary for you as you already should have enough protein intake, important is that the total protein intake is not much higher then 20%, because a higher amount of proteins results in a higher concentration of uric acids (especially if you don't do sports) and since the conversion of protein to fat/carbs is rather inflammatory (generally speaking), so you don't want to have excess protein, because you don't have any advantage from it.
There are ways to make grains and legumes more digestible such as fermentation to eliminate antinutrients found in these foods. They are not completely indigestible, it depends on how you eat them.
Summary for myself. Whey isolate - insulin spikes, use sparingly - every other day post workout. Pea protein - slow absorption, no insulin spike - Add hemp to make it complete. daily use. Hemp protein - add it to pea protein. Anti inflammatory effects. Casein protein - hard to digest, effects on the brain, unless eating organic cottage cheese. Calogen - Not protein so doesn't grow muscles, good for recovery only, can put in coffee
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a “Protein Explanation” video that was overwhelming in favor of pea protein. What’s that? He’s sponsored by a pea protein product? I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. To be on the safe side, I think I’ll get future information from people without a monetary stake and who will supply links to the scientific studies they are quoting.
Bone Broth is missing Leucine, which is the main Amino Acid responsible for Muscle Building (Muscle Protein Synthesis). Although all of the Amino Acids are used to build Muscle, Bone Broth should be consumed with Bone / Skin health in mind - eat Muscle / Organ Meats to get the proper Protein ratios required for Building Muscle.

So basically, what I understood is... I can take PEA PROTEIN only... Both for breaking my Intermittent Fasting in the afternoon and also throughout the day & at dinner... Don't really need whey isolate... Right?? :D
Should we have to be concerned about pea protein as it may still have lectin in it ( the mechanical processing would not remove lectin , i think). Then just as rice protein, which has gluten like compound, wouldn't pea protein consumption cause leaky gut, especially when it is taken right after a fast? I love to hear anyone's thought on this. Thanks heaps!
Great breakdown Thomas. Thank you so much. I would be interested in what you have to say about Bone Broth Protein. Have a fabulous day and thanks again!
Phyliss Todd I think he did a video on bone protein. I have tried everything and bone marrow soup is the most natural derivative of animal product protein. Plus collagen is a huge benefit. Try to get organic though, if not, trim the fat.
Other influencers say that plant based proteins, pea protein, have higher levels of metals and arsenic from the soil. Love to hear your opinion on that.
Every time. His information is still good but it's obvious he's getting a sponsor before picking a topic of the video. It's to make the sponsors happy, not the viewers. I'm really disappointed in this channel lately.
I could literally have a sponsor for every topic that I talk about. Why on earth would I not drive attention to something I use? No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. It’s literally passive mentions. No one is every deprived of information in a sponsored video. Period. It’s always the same amount of info but I also highlight what you can get and where you can get it cheaper.
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial To be honest, I never felt like you pushed for anything other than giving people good information and a source of a place where to get some of the products you talk about.
I started with Pea Protein from SunWarrior! It helps me with my hunger cravings.
I am a medical doctor, Best video ever! thanks!
Lol
The problem with any protein is alot of people replace a meal with them, instead of using them like they should be as a supplement. Always get your macros from whole foods but if you need to get some protein every once in a while from a protein powder get it.
I didn't know that, thank you.
Very well said.
Mr. R , exactly.. its such a staple in my diet I can’t imagine having to replace it with something else like chicken or beef or eggs again...
Hamad B your loss...
Mr. R don't say sorry to him...you're the one who misses out
14:42 for summary...
I used several types of whey proteins my whole life and I just using pea protein for last year. I must say, pea protein is much much better than whey in terms of results.
For gaining muscle?

Too good , I am a nurse in Australia and I am a big fan of you and Dr berg
Sales pitch aside, that was really informative and consice. Will be ditching the whey concentrate and the fart inducing casein powders. Thanks
What's your thoughts on higher heavy metals levels found in plant proteins?
That is false there are more heavy metals in farmed animal fat than plants.. but if a plant does have heavy metals it is easily removed by the fiber the plant has something meat cannot do.
I take organic grass fed unflavoured whey concentrate, I was told it has more fat in it than isolate, which in turn slows down insulin spike.
Will in counter this effect and keep me in Ketosis?
which protein do you recommend for women?
My grass-fed whey protein isolate has 2380mg of luecine & the pea protein he recommends has 2614mg of luecine. Therefore the pea protein spikes insulin more than the whey protein. Protein powders have different amino formulations so insulin responses vary by manufacturer not the type of protein. Furthermore my preferred whey protein has protein fractions to aid digestion. I tried Sun Warrior and found it was gritty whereas the whey has a smooth texture.
What brand of whey protein are you using? I tried pea protein for a month and never got used to the texture and taste.
A video on level of toxicity on protein powders would be great
Thomas, what about Coconut Protein? I have seen it recently, & was wondering what you think about it.
This was very informative, thank you!
I hear so much contradictory advice. So I just have to experiment and see what works for me.
Fantastic explanation. Thank you for summarizing in such a clear way!
"They squeezed a steak" had me dying. 🤣🤣🤣
One of the most thorough videos I've seen with good scientific backing. I do however, recommend that people do additional research on their own. I found a high-quality whey isolate that's free of lactose and artificial sweeteners. Consider myself subscribed.
Thanks for the discount code Thomas I got a 30 serving container of vanilla and chocolate from sun warrior and saved $16
3:06 at this point i thought he was about to say I should consume human protein milk lmao
YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE GODSEND🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 THE VIDEO I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED LOVE FROM LONDON
Same. Just looked it up as I'm weight training
"Whey " complete. Very informative.
Thanks for this video Thomas. What an awesome video! Just what I have been wanting to know. Super helpful. Thank you.
Man so many ppl depend on you Thomas for the “truth” thx so much for your hard work on these subjects! U rock it!!
What has collagen in it? Or is it a supplement?
Try to do gluten free.
how much have you lost now if you don't mind me asking
Thomas, please discuss the lead contamination in most pea protein powders.
So when are you going to come out with your own supplements and workout programs?
What about egg, the only one I can have, food allergies to the rest.
I agree..why was that missing...do you drink the pasteurized egg whites as your post workout?
Joshua Perry I think there was the important product placement opportunity here (that pays the bills)
Very strange he didn't discuss egg or bone broth protein, two very popular types. Probably because he wasn't paid to.
@@justj2440 bone broth is similar to the collagen
This was about powders. He has others about food.
Best video on protein I’ve seen on TH-cam.
This is great information for someone who has type 2 diabetes, I had no idea that whey protein was affecting my sugar levels.
Mura berg is next level quack
I only use protein powder post workout. I wasnt aware people are even drinking it through the day
Yep, use it to mitigate digestive disorders.
@@theresak4343 what do you mean 🤔
@@JT-91 In baking, it works like flour, easier to digest, also with drinking, easier to digest; and that was a fast response!
@@theresak4343 never tried whey in baking. I have tried pb2. Sounds interesting
Calogen - Not protein so doesn't grow muscles, good for recovery only, can put in coffee
funny cause I've been wanting to ask about a video on this topic for a few weeks now thx bro!!
Wise decision.
Thank you so much! I have been wondering how to up my protein a little. As always a wonderfully informative video!
Awesome as usual. I ordered Pea Protein tonight. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video I've been struggling to find a protein that has no inflammatory ingredients
Worried about 'Genetic Disconnect'? just eat human meat!

So, where do we get those kinds of proteins that you are recommending?
Gnc or on line
Thrive market
Thrift store
Kmart
Great video. Enjoyed it very much. I was wondering on your thoughts on bone broth protein.
I'm good with it
Bone Broth is missing Leucine, which is the main Amino Acid responsible for Muscle Building (Muscle Protein Synthesis). Although all of the Amino Acids are used to build Muscle, Bone Broth should be consumed with Bone / Skin health in mind - eat Muscle / Organ Meats to get the proper Protein ratios required for Building Muscle.
@@Ariel-oo1nc i never knew that? didnt know bone broth was missing lueicine? i dont think it is..... u sure?
@@ExploitMage bone broth only contains 3 of the 18 amino acids. You can look it up on Google.

Like your videos for telling the honest truth about good and bad products to take
So basically, what I understood is...
I've been wondering this too! Also with almond protein getting popular. Lectins get destroyed by heat I thought so maybe in the process it's reduced 🤷
If you eat beef, does your body say, "Okay, this is protein, but it's animal and I'm a human?"
also this is pea protein and this was actually intended to grow a plant :p
Coach Greg needs to do a review on this video lol 😂
thanks...i always had issues with weightloss using whey isolates...i think u cleared this up.
i just ordered directly p protein im glad i saw this
Great breakdown Thomas.
@@johnnybehealthy5720 Thank you so much for the info, it's greatly appreciated.
Other influencers say that plant based proteins, pea protein, have higher levels of metals and arsenic from the soil. Love to hear your opinion on that.
All of those influencers will say anything for a like. If I had to listen to all of them I wouldn't be doing anything
I used to love your videos.. now I just feel like you are trying to sell me something every time
A mans gotta make a living. Anyways his content is gold.
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial To be honest, I never felt like you pushed for anything other than giving people good information and a source of a place where to get some of the products you talk about. I never bought anything that TH-cam fitness 'gurus' promote but your "sales pitch" was subtle enough that I have decided to check it out. Guess what, I got two jogs. So thanks, man! It looks inexpensive compared to other vegan proteins and doesn't have a lot of components. I hope the quality is good as well!
This was extremely helpful. I recently had surgery and my Dr has stressed getting my protein in. So now I know what to get instead of that premier protein which i was hesitating to use.
