Studio Go Boom with Sylvia Massy - Ep. 2 (Germanium Transistors) | EarthQuaker Devices

  • Let’s just reach into the cooler and… Sylvia is back at it, putting everyday items through the tests of tone! Everyday items being Park Fuzz Sound and Afterneath of course! You use these pedals every-dang-day, right? For those of you not in “the know”, Germanium transistors are sensitive to temperature and can yield varying tonal results depending on whether they are hot or cold. She knows this all too well and has decided to run a demonstration with a single Roland key tone into a Park Fuzz on ice, at room temperature, and also heated with a Conair. Afterneath is here simply for moral support and to remind you to get weird. Lest we forget to have FUN when we record! This exciting adventure in sound capture has been brought to you by your friend Sylvia Massy, who else!?

She should have her own signature EQD pedal with that name.

I see Sylvia, i click 'like' and watch. in that order, no questions asked. I was hoping there'd be a quick disclaimer about the dangers of electronics getting hot, but then i saw the huge grin as she got out the hair dryer and was like, 'whelp, Sylvia Massey gonna Sylvia Massey'. lol. great little video!

    Fuzzy bagpipes.
People used to laugh about the idea of putting pedals in the freezer like it was a tall story, or one of those unicorn dust things that people imagine changes sound. I guess back in the Germanium early days a few probably did. Cool and groovy semiconductors. Semiconductor could be confusing suggesting they are only half conductive materials. Something to do with quantum states and being able to be conductive and then non conductive depending on current. Good for number crunching in binary apparently. Good for sound wave crunching too.
I have long wanted to built my own fuzz. But I found a local NZ fella who builds them the old way with the old bits. He is going to build me one with a proper old school Tone Bender enclosure he scored and is currently getting painted -- providing I remember to remind him I want it, so he does not sell it to somebody else. MKII with none of the mods for convenience etc. One built with modern parts and features probably sounds the same, but it would always bug me wondering if an exact replica sounds different.
I only want it for one thing. Wah and my Belle Epoch Deluxe to do Dazed And Confused sounds occasionally. The rest of the time I like a boosted JMP (I am going to install a mod that cascades my 1987's input stage to make it also be able to do the 2204 thing).
P.S. I wonder about that wireless Angus boosted his JMP amps with. Whether Superlead or 2203 he tended to use it. I read it is a compander. Apart from one very expensive gadget I saw, nobody seems to make a compander pedal that does what that wireless did to his sound. Surprising considering so many love that Angus tone. I also like hot ceramic pups and an overdrive boosting a 2203. Viv Campbell etc.

Straightaway I noticed the difference in colourisation in the bandpass filtering characteristics of the Germanium transistor but what was really interesting was hearing the colourisation shift during the re-heating process caused by the hair dryer. An amazing and rather unique envelope sweep of sorts.

I had a Zvex FatFuzz Factory that could be the best Drive pedal ever made, or the worst Boss Heavy Metal you ever heard.I have tried probably 100 Silicon and hybrid fuzzes ,trying to find a sound as good and as stable as Germanium alone, and am fairly convinced it just can't be done.( The(old) Dirt Transmitter is close.Ramble,Joe Gore and Basic Audio make some great circuits.)
Mostly, I use the Eruptor these days, and use other kinds of effects to vary it's output; at some point, you gotta stop fiddling with effects and write songs, - or not.Do what it takes to keep it engaging without becoming a drag.
    Follow that bliss.

ZVEX did this in their instagram a while back for their fuzz factory. Left the pedal out in the snow and claimed it sounded darker than room temp after. They also put it under intense heat and that made pedal sound more compressed. Not saying this is a copy of that but still always fun to listen to Sylvia Massey!
