That was his real hair. He's a big dude too. I was lucky enough to meet and hang out with him several times in the late 90's when he had a morning radio show in Connecticut. Dee's one of the nicest people alive.
I met him at the Sturgis motorcycle rally in '06. I was kind of shocked at how big he was. That was an interesting week. I met Dee, G. Gordon Liddy, Jesse Combs, rented a motorcycle to the Postmaster General of the United States, and there were multiple shootouts between a couple of MCs. Good times.
Dee Snyder testified in front of congress on censorship of rock nroll, I just remember the gasps as he walked in full twisted sister style , worth watching!
Not only did he testify, he gave thoughtful intelligent well thought out testimony for virtues of free speech and artistic expression that made the PMRC look like idiots after they implied that he was an unintelligent ogre that was just trying to corrupt the youth.

When this first came out and was flooding the MTV/MuchMusic airwaves, my older brother just had a son, who was around 2 or 3 in 1984. As all kids will, it was "monkey see monkey do" and when the little guy saw the "teens" banging their heads against the lockers during the "Rock! (Rock!) Rock! (Rock!)" part, he copied it by bonking his little head against his dad's loudspeaker that stood taller than he did, lol. My brother sees this and just shook his head with some concern over the "questionable influence". He wasn't one of those conservative stiffs by any means - he liked smoking weed and liked rock music, but he was more of a "FM classic rock" guy and didn't go for much of the heavy metal. It's just funny how seeing kids headbang in a music video was one of those "dangerous influences", which by comparison to what's out there TODAY, it's really laughable now that such visuals were ever any kind of threat to anyone - youth or otherwise.
I remember when it came out. Have seen them live 4 times, and each time they were actually pretty dang tight. People dismissed their musical abilities because of the hair and makeup. Dee is a wonderful dude, does lots for charity and community. He also has a new band (along with some older projects). Oh, and they re-recorded Stay Hungry as Still Hungry, and recorded it how they had originally wanted to, not the way they had to. It's a bit heavier and their abilities show a bit better.
That's his real hair. I used to live a couple of blocks from him. It was a lot shorter by that point, but yep, it's his hair, all right. And yes, the eighties weren't nostalgia then, they were real. What's great is that 1980s hair, clothes and MUSIC are coming back in style fast, thanks to shows like Stranger Things and Cobra Kai.
I absolutely love Lex's interpretation of the band name, fits so perfectly, lol. These guys have always been one of my all time favorite bands from the '80s. Just such a clean, simple and energetic rock sound that you can't help but want to sing and fist pump along to.
Don't forget to check out You can't stop rock and roll and Be Crool to your Schuel both by Twisted Sister. The last one is Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper. And yes that is Dee's real hair
It was said in an interview by lead singer Dee Snider, that always wanted their music videos to be like a live version of “The Roadrunner and Coyote” cartoons.
Dee Snyder said recently that the songs "I wanna Rock" and "We're Not Gonna Take It" were the best things to ever happen to his life because he makes disgusting amounts of money from the royalties off those two songs even 30+ years later.
Dee was friends with my family when I was a kid. He gave my sister and I an autographed record. I barely remember him, but I'll never forget how crazy his hair was.
Twisted sister is what we really needed at the time back in the '80s there were a lot of Christian groups coming out telling people that if they played their records backwards they would hear the devil and that it was causing all kinds of problems in the youth so these videos really struck us when we saw them because it was really imitating life.
Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) and P.M.R.C (Parents Music Resource Center) went after Dee Snider and other musicians. You should watch Dee's PMRC Senate Hearing Speech.
For better or worse, Dee Snider gets the credit for Howard Stern's old look. Howard used to look like an accountant but since he was not on television, nobody knew it. So Dee was shocked when he first was a guest on the Howard Stern Show. He told Howard that he need a rock & roll look to go with his rock & roll attitude, so Dee and his wife created that Howard look from 1987-2000ish.
This is definitely why the actual videos are so important to see the nuances of what made a song/band so good. Add CC if it)s available for the lyrics. 😉 Please keep it up and you’ll gain so much more insight into the music you’re learning about. ❤️🍻
That's all his hair you guys....Dee Snider once had his hair insured for a million bucks at this time... !!!!!....the video has cast members from the movie ''ANIMAL HOUSE ''.....The guy playing the teacher was an asshole in that film name Needimeyer, who was with the rich fraternity and the guy at the end was Flounder , who was in the Animal House ( deliquent party fraternity)....good comedy movie from the early 80's !!!!
Y'all should definitely go back and watch the video for "We're Not Gonna Take It" for your own enjoyment, it's an Absolute Classic. Side Note: Dee Snider is pretty much an American Hero at this point. ❤🤘
Check out Dee Snider (the lead singer of Twisted Sister) do a "Stripped down version of We're Not Gonna Take It". He did it for child cancer awareness, it is an amazing song. As for Twisted Sister songs, the Price, Burn in Hell, SMF and Come Out and Play are all great songs by them.
Just a warning Brad & Lex if you react to the slower version of We're Not Gonna Take It, it will make you cry. And I second the recommended songs to check out.
The yelling guy and the big guy at the end were actors in ANIMAL HOUSE and those were quotes they had said in the movie which was super popular for decades... I think Neidermeyer (yelly guy) also stars in We're Not Going To Take It video also.
Lmao 😂 yes it's his real hair I used to love them in JR High especially because my parents were so freaked out by them when they saw what they looked like it was hilarious 😂 thanks so much for all your hard work and for the share ❤👍💯✌
The '80's were a very bleak decade music-wise, but Twisted Sister was great. They never took themselves too seriously, and their videos (Van Halen's too - thanks, Pete Angelus) were always funny. A whole bunch of us went to see Twisted Sister in 2009 when they did the 25th anniversary tour for "Stay Hungry"; it was like a statewide reunion of all these lunatics at our house before the show. The band was fantastic - in full makeup, supposedly for the final time - and you could tell they were having fun. Jay Jay French thanked everybody for their patronage over the years while also going on a hysterical, profanity-laden diatribe about how fake American Idol is to a band that had to bust their asses to make it like they did. One thing I will never, *ever* forget: in front of my wife and I there was this woman sitting in the front row of the balcony, she HAD to be ninety years old or more. And she was rocking out to the band....my wife and I still laugh about the cool old lady to this day sometimes.
They are a serious band and the makeup was a way to get them noticed. They have called the makeup a blessing (they stand out) and a curse (it became their whole identity). To get a better understanding of the intro and why they used Mark Metcalf (mimicking his Doug Neidermeyer character) you now have to go watch 'National Lampoon's Animal House'. A classic comedy with a stellar cast including the late great Jim Belushi. Dee Snyder (among others) testified in front of congress when the whole "music is corrupting the youth" (PMRC) thing was happening. Just Google "dee snider congress speech" and check it out. It's really interesting and was a HUGE moment for rock music and music in general. The only real change that came from those hearings is the Parental Advisory Labels we now see on CDs, and albums. Ironically those labels just made more people want to buy CDs with the labels because it was a kind of FU to the system. Many musicians including rappers see the labels as a badge of honor so to speak.
In this episode of Brad & Lex, Brad goes to detention immediately for his little "what a weirdo" outburst. Lex is briefly grossed out by a gross dude before the intro forces a yelp from the tiny framed couch correspondent, then as the Twisted momentum builds, sprinkles of "sways" are visible on the ever so analytical Brad just as Lex releases "moderate bops" along with her Twisted theory.
I have to say your are right Lex about the energy they have when i saw them in 86 Dee had everyone standing with all of the lights on in the HemisFair Arena In San Antonio Tx and a kid and his mother he had come down to the stage from way in the back in the balcony to sing I wanna rock! with him. Till this day it is the most motivating concert i have ever been to and I have been to quite a few.
Brad & Lex, you previously reacted to the song "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister, but you kinda missed out because you just did the song, you didn't watch the full video. THAT video was SO ICONIC for the 80's. So much so that even MICHAEL JACKSON made an homage to it with his video for "Black and White". This video for "I Wanna Rock" is a continuation of the theme from that video.
5:20 Mark Metcalf (bow tie/Niedermeyer) and Donovan Scott (principal/Dorfman) paying homage to the 1978 movie Animal House. They both starred in the movie.
Ummmm No... the second person playing the principal/Kent Dorfman is Stephen Furst... Donovan Scott played cadet Leslie Barbara in the movie Police Academy which was released later that same year.
The teacher is Douglas C. Neidermeyer from the movie Animal House. That’s how he acted in the movie. The guy at the end spaying the seltzer bottle was Kent (flounder) Dorfman from the same movie.
The story is told that Dee was the inspiration for the Aerosmith song “Dude looks like a Lady,” after Steve Tyler saw him from behind and commented on the good looking lady then went past him. The comment was made,”The dude looks like a lady”and eventually the song was written. I also understand that the two of them are friends.
wrong guy, It was Vince Neil when Steven Tyler saw him at the Rainbow.........The song, which originally started out as "Cruisin' for a Lady", talks about a man with an effeminate appearance, who is mistaken for a woman. Steven Tyler states in the book Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith: "One day we met Mötley Crüe, and they're all going, 'Dude!'
Who remembers the badass film Dee wrote and starred in, Strangeland? “I haven’t been afraid of anything in my whole life. You know why? Because I wish I was dead.”
Check out the National Lampoon's 1978 movie (Animal House) to get the context for that irate father at the start of the video! :) The father is the very irate horse-riding supporter of 'bad-stuff'! I always hated what happened to his innocent horse, though! I guess those were a time of transition. Yeah, right... ;P
The song stood on its own merits as did the band. I get that the slap stick, hair, makeup and hair were common during the 80s but it is nostalgic to see what used to be popular.
They are inspired by groups like The New York Dolls, and Iggy Pop. Glam rock from the. 70's. I appreciate and like them more now than when it came out. The Price is a song you should check out.
This WAS a "Re-enactment of a Movie" of Sorts. The Actor's Quotes are Lines they used used as "Neidermier" and "Flounder" the 1979 Movie "Animal House". Twisted Sister used "Neidermier" in another Video as well.
Lex you make a TON of sense. I was there and believe me, it happened. We all dressed crazy/cool for the ideas and mentality of the day. It was always go BIG or go home. The decadence was over the top, and so was the hair. Mine was HUGE! LOL The 80’s was the best era ever. I always hear of people laughing at the way we dressed and wore our hair. And I’ve heard too many times, how awful the music of that decade was. However, what I am noticing now, is a whole entire generation has become curious about that decade of decadence, to the point of some of the fashions and hairstyles are starting to return. I noticed legwarmers about three years ago! They looked cute then just like they did in the 80s. It seems to me that if the 80s were that bad, then why are so many people interested in it, and exposing the old music again, and bringing that sound and look completely back into existence? Tells me it wasn’t that bad of a decade huh? It was THE GREATEST decade ever. I’m 55 and I’ve lived through the 60’s (a small part of it ) 70’s, 80’s, 90’s-2000’s, and by far the 80’s we’re the best. It makes me happy to see young people like y’all reacting to this era, and loving it, and exposing it again and bringing in an entire new generation of listeners! Y’all make me smile. You’re a good source for smiles! 💜❤️
I lived through it as well and that is so true... probably one of the greatest decades ever.... but, my apologies, you look too good to be as old as you claim... Rock On!! LOL
I too was in 10th grade when this first came out. The song was a hit for sure but even back then I thought the video was cheesy...then again so were 90% of all 80's videos. The actor playing schoolmaster played the same roll a few years earlier in the movie Animal House. Out of context his over the top performance in this may seem really strange (its strange in context too, haha).
*I saw them in San Bernardino (I believe they made a video of this concert) and San Francisco (...with Y&T and Lita Ford, if my recollection is correct...yes, I am old, LOL) in the mid 80s.....those were good times.*
Twisted Sister’s look was basically just a more extreme example of the kind of androgyny and transgressive gender presentation that was a relative common thing (especially in the music scene) in the 80s. Norms in gender presentation got a lot more rigid for males in the 1990s. It’s not that conservative types in the 1980s didn’t disapprove (they were quite scandalized at times) but rather that gender boundaries in male presentation got pushed a LOT compared to the next two decades. Twisted Sister dialed it up to 11 with Sender’s over the top makeup, but lots of hair metal, new wave and synth pop artists were androgynous to some degree or another. At the time, it was more of a transgressive fashion thing than part of a social discourse on LGBTQ+ issues but it did give several queer artists room to be pretty flamboyant so long as they didn’t openly talk about being queer.
Hi Brad and Lex! There is a very cool and old band that i want you to listen to if you haven't done it already. He told Howard that he need a rock & roll look to go with his rock & roll attitude, so Dee and his wife created that Howard look from 1987-2000ish.
Oh the hours spent watching MTV videos back in the 80s. When they had real video appeal. Simple times.
One of the funnest concerts I ever attended. They were killer.
I'm glad you watched the video this time cause it was hell of funny
This is definitely why the actual videos are so important to see the nuances of what made a song/band so good.
Add CC if it)s available for the lyrics. 😉
Please keep it up and you’ll gain so much more insight into the music you’re learning about. ❤️🍻
the best way to experience how the 80's were is watching the actual video from the era
Agreed.
you're not gonna see the CC anyways since they have to make the MV less visible.
80's hair bands i was in high school,,, loved it..
They were a fun group when I was a kid. '80s. They had funny videos, too. Cool band
Good song. My son used to hang out with Dee Snyder's daughter here on Long Island. Thanks, cats!
That is why they are calledhair bands
Brooklyn, NY's own. Remember hearing of them on WPLJ 95.5.
Love when you watch the videos and live performances over just words
High school in 80’s good times..lol Class of 1988 here
That's all his hair you guys....Dee Snider once had his hair insured for a million bucks at this time...
It's like watching a time capsule of the 80's.
Saw them in concert when this came out. They were really good
Every time I see this guy in these Twisted Sister videos I think of the movie Animal House.
I can never hear this and NOT think "I'm a Goofy Goober". Thank you for that, SpongeBob SquarePants movie.
Check out Dee Snider (the lead singer of Twisted Sister) do a "Stripped down version of We're Not Gonna Take It". He did it for child cancer awareness, it is an amazing song. As for Twisted Sister songs, the Price, Burn in Hell, SMF and Come Out and Play are all great songs by them.
you can't stop rock and roll its another that got some serious play on M tv.
Just a warning Brad & Lex if you react to the slower version of We're Not Gonna Take It, it will make you cry. And I second the recommended songs to check out.
@@dionshare7103 I didn't want to spoil it for them.
My old ass remembers when that song came out 😜
Check out Dee Snider's PMRC hearing before US Congress defending himself as part of the music industry against censorship.
Glad you watched the video 80's stuff you need to always watch the video's to get the aura of the group and the times
Dee Snyder doesn't just want to rock, he is also A GOOFY GOOBER!
oh yes old school
Fun Fact: Dee Snyder went to my daughter's High School - Baldwin High on Long Island. Go Bruins!!
Stop it Smitty😂
Blasted this on my boom box while it was bungee-corded to my motorcycle lol!
@@edwardpaulsen1074 And of course, for the serious nerds among us, Stephen Furst went on to play Vir Cotto in Babylon 5.
@@MsCatstaff Oh most definitively! Likely one of his greatest roles... but I was trying not to "muddy the water" as it were.
lol "mister sister"
Do Fu-Schnickens ft Shaq "What's Up Doc?"
(Can We Rock)
I remember being a 10yr old watching this on MTV in the 80s.
The teacher is Douglas C. Neidermeyer from the movie Animal House. That’s how he acted in the movie. The guy at the end spaying the seltzer bottle was Kent (flounder) Dorfman from the same movie.
Stay Hungry is a Masterpiece of a Album..
To Eric Parsons-Thank you for the clarification. Just shows what you hear isn’t always true. Again thanks.
Who remembers the badass film Dee wrote and starred in, Strangeland? “I haven’t been afraid of anything in my whole life. You know why? Because I wish I was dead.”
I'm a goofy goober (ROCK!)!
Check out the National Lampoon's 1978 movie (Animal House) to get the context for that irate father at the start of the video! :)
The father is the very irate horse-riding supporter of 'bad-stuff'! I always hated what happened to his innocent horse, though! I guess those were a time of transition. Yeah, right... ;P
The song stood on its own merits as did the band. I get that the slap stick, hair, makeup and hair were common during the 80s but it is nostalgic to see what used to be popular.
From Long Island, NY. Saw them several times. In fact I just drove past singer Dee Snider's high school.
They are inspired by groups like The New York Dolls, and Iggy Pop. Glam rock from the. 70's. I appreciate and like them more now than when it came out. The Price is a song you should check out.
The characters are from the movie “Animal House”.
They had another great song, We`re not gonna take it. It was a kind of anthem when it came out.
This video always reminded me of Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote 😆
This WAS a "Re-enactment of a Movie" of Sorts. The Actor's Quotes are Lines they used used as "Neidermier" and "Flounder" the 1979 Movie "Animal House". Twisted Sister used "Neidermier" in another Video as well.
T/S - You cant stop rock'n'roll
Mark Metcalf plays the teacher, he also plays Doug Neidermeyer in the 1978 movie National Lampoon's Animal House.
Great song
I wanna rock! I love you guys. Here we go.
Thr Documentary on these guys is killer. They were making so much money in the Bar scene that they really did not even need a Record deal.
Rock On!! LOL
NEXT UP :...WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT....GOOD DRUMS
I too was in 10th grade when this first came out. The song was a hit for sure but even back then I thought the video was cheesy...then again so were 90% of all 80's videos. The actor playing schoolmaster played the same roll a few years earlier in the movie Animal House. Out of context his over the top performance in this may seem really strange (its strange in context too, haha).
This video is a riot, always get a kick out of it.
Awesome! Finally a video reaction 🤘🔥
*I saw them in San Bernardino (I believe they made a video of this concert) and San Francisco (...with Y&T and Lita Ford, if my recollection is correct...yes, I am old, LOL) in the mid 80s.....those were good times.*
Perfect sense
The lead singer is the host of a national radio show called “the house of hair”
Great song.
Every, it seemed, Twisted Sister Video was an Homage to the Road Runner, with the Adult playing the part of the Coyote and failing every time.
Do Lit "My Own Worst Enemy"
Hi Brad and Lex! There is a very cool and old band that i want you to listen to if you haven't done it already. The bandname is BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE and one of their hit songs is called:" YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET ". Hopefully you can react to this song sometimes 😊.
I have said it many times before but your react channel is soooooo freakin' Awesome!!! Really like it alot!
Have a wonderful day!
