  • Rock & roll was under attack during the mid-’80s. As the music got more theatrical and provocative and MTV gave it a national platform, America’s youth screamed for more. It was obvious that pop music was experiencing a revolution it hadn’t seen since Elvis swiveled his hips on The Ed Sullivan Show. Enter Dee Snider and his band, Twisted Sister.

      @@TheOneAndOnlyD-O-Double-G I think most people would consider that to be more about propriety, politeness and appearances though, which would play directly into Snider's point that surface level appearances are not really aligned with morality or the way we treat each other, and continue to poke at the closed-minded self-claimed "Christians" to be the ones to assign the label of "hateful" and "disrespectful" to others based on how they look or speak. So it probably wouldn't have worked for Gore to bring that up.
      And if we are being intellectually honest, in "The Sick Mother F--king Friends of Twister" the "Mother F--king" isn't really about having sex with your mother at all, it's just an extreme adjective meant to be radical, rebellious, and humorous. But Gore still could have effectively made that argument to drive his point and further pick at the language used, since intellectual honesty isn't really worth much in Congress or at the education level of the television watching American public.

That really didn’t make me think highly of him, some time later, and now I know he’s an idiot. But yes, you shouldn’t always judge someone off appearance but with the Snider case it isn’t wild to think he is a idiot, but after a few of his answers they should have thrown those wrongful judgements out the window and talk to him how they would anyone else.

      Snider wasn't infallible though, and some of the arguments he made definitely left the door unsealed. He was aided quite a bit by his own conviction, which was apparent in the strength and confidence of his statements. But he was helped even more so by Gore's incompetence and wavering. As I recall, John Denver was on the PMRC's hit list because they thought the song title "Rocky Mountain High" promoted drugs. Zappa was there because they decided the lyrics on his album "Jazz from hell" promoted satanism. If they'd listened to it, they'd have known it was 100% instrumental. I think Tipper Gore first took offence at one of Madonna's albums that her daughter was listening to. Again, from what I recall, the album contained a reference to masturbation and Tipper didn't like her daughter hearing about that. A lot of Zappa's lyrics called out Republicans and televangelists for hypocrisy and dishonesty and he was pretty scathing about religious bigots and racists. He also refused drugs, and coming to work stoned was a sacking offence in his bands. I can't imagine what he'd he'd make of things today...

      To be wery honest i think Al Gore is one of the better, and this was a bit unfair to him, at least that's my impression in comparision with a lot of the others, but i am not living in the US. I think it was more that he did not realy liked Dees humour and sarcatic jokes all the time, especialy sinse so many jof them where directly targeted on a personal plane, and i can fully understand that he wanted to defend he's wife even if she was tecnically wrong since Dee actualy acted realy provokative, probably because he knewed that the fans liked that way he preformed the whole thing. After all most what they did was in order to draw atention to the band and the bandmembers in order to sell more records, and i can imagine this must had been a golden oportunity for him, and as said he is very far from dumb so i think it was carfully planned in reality, but he wanted it to look more casual than it realy was because it would look better to the fans if it gave the impression in media of being improvised on spot and walking out as the winner.

    One of the background issues that got stuck in my brain is the undue power of influence afforded to the spouses of elected (and/or appointed) officials. Why did anyone care what Tipper thought? Yes, she’s her own person with her own voice and fully within her rights to express her opinions…but Al was the one who was elected, not her. How many elected officials come with built-in lobbyists, and how much influence do they actually have?

      I am so happy that you had that cool experience. Mr snider is a righteous cool cat. I have seen him in concert. He is a down to earth individual. When you see him flat out take the lead on the hearing,that showed his thoughtful leadership. He is a great guy. 🤩🤘.

      I would like to add,when you see him in concert, you get to see his genuinely Funny sense of humor.even among rockstars, he is a rear breed.I feel extremely lucky, to be able to grow up with such a "GREAT LEADER/ ROCK STAR" . saw at the M3 FESTIVAL, in my backyard of Maryland. The location of the M3, is "Merriweather post pillvion".

      I wonder how different the music, especially rap, that became popular in the 90s would have been with the advisory sticker. it was basically saying "rich and powerful (and usually white) people don't want you listening to this"

    • @42ayla
      @42ayla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Even better than that some bands released 2 albums, one with and one without the warning. That had the parents buying the morally approved one for their cherubs while the kids used their birthday money to buy the other one. They actually got to sell the same product twice. Way to backfire Tipper.

    Snider having to explain basic parenting most parents are too lazy to actually do.

    • @gameprose4293
      @gameprose4293 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a gamer, you have no idea how many arguments I've gotten into with other people about the contents of games. They always eventually go down to a question similar to one that Snider had to tackle: "Would you buy video games for your kids?"
      I then would have to explain the existence of video game ratings and how to judge if a game is meant for a kid, teen or adult. You'd be surprised with how many people are completely unaware of the existence of rating systems like the PEGI or ESRB and just assume all video games are 'meant for children'.
      The issue is a lot of people would rather blame the world around them instead of realizing that they're the ones that have to raise their kids and decide what their kids can and cannot handle. It shouldn't be "Video Games are violent, so let's ban video games.", it should be "Some video games are violent, so I shouldn't get my kid those games until they're old enough."

    • @gameprose4293
      @gameprose4293 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Paul Martin If you think your kids can handle it, and mature enough for it, go for it.
      The main focus of my rant was against those parents who buy their kids games and then later complain about the content in the games, blaming game developers instead of their own lack of parenting skills.

    Just as a casual example, the song Afternoon Delight is a double-entendre song about having daytime quickies. It was released in 1976, 9 years before Mr Dee Snyder appeared before congress.
    I'm glad Mr Snyder was able to tell them all to screw themselves far more eloquently than they deserved.

    • @MrGriefCreep
      @MrGriefCreep 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wait, what's the other meaning? A double entendre has to have two, and afaik "afternoon delight" refers exclusively to sex.
      Fun fact: that song was part of my store's playlist and in just sitting there serving customers while the vocalists just sing about fucking the day away like 🙂
