Cheap Trick Live at Budokan was released in 1978; their best-selling album.
First night: The lead singer (Robin Zander) announced the opening song (I want you to want me) to a very polite Japanese audience, the crowd then sat quietly in their seats for the entirety of the song.
The next night, the famous Japanese promoter who brought the band (also the Beatles and Bob Dylan) to Japan, told a still very confused Robin Zander that when he announced the song, he was talking too fast and the reason the fans sat quietly during the performance was that “I want you to want me” was interrupted in Japanese as something like, “I want you to pay attention to me”. So they did.
So that’s why in the intro, Robin Zander says it clearly and slowly: “I want YOU…to want ME!!!” (followed by the screaming of 12,000 Japanese kids that nearly drowned out the band)
Thank You Rob for the info!! Never knew that -so cool to know. Great insight!
Thankfully the full concert was released later on. I had the original highlights album which I played to death. Some concerts are just iconic in rock history.
What is the audience shouting back during the 'Didn't I see you cryin'" section? Are they imitating crying or saying "cry, cry cry"? I can't tell for sure..
I've got it in my album collection
@@cartercarter645 Robin Zander told that story on Howard Stern about 15 years ago. I always thought it was the best background story about a song ever. lol
Mike Damone from Fast times at Ridgemont High knew the awesomeness of Cheap Trick 🎸
I want YOU 👆🏻 to want ME 👇🏻
And the awesomeness of Stacey too
“The lady will have the linguine with clam sauce and a Coke with no ice.” 😎
The charisma of Robin Zander…
True , but he didnt know what Zeppelin songs were on which albums. Side one of Zep 4 doesn't include Kashmir. But maybe that was Rat's fault so I digress. The directors and producers however, WTF how could you blow that one?
This song was released in 1977, so it probably shares some of that 70’s vibe with Lynyrd Skynyrd along with its blues based riff that Lex was picking up on.
Outside the decade not even close. Not tuned the same different speed everything. But hey what do I know
@@LOAFEMB So you're saying that Lynyrd Skynyrd weren't playing in the 70s? In fact, they weren't even known as Lynyrd Skynyrd until around 69/70, and their first album was in 1973. So definitely the same decade.
@@davidjames3080 I never said that. I said that Skynard and Chick Treat guitar playing on this song is nothing alike
When I saw Cheap Trick in March 1977, their first album had been released but nobody really knew them. They were one of the "warm up" bands on a bill with The Runaways. The other unknown "warm up" band was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. True story, got the ticket stub. Peace.
I literally laughed out loud at Brad's expression when Lex told him to listen to the music, not the words.
Lex really feels music.
Hey Brad, if you or Lex have watched “10 Things I Hate About You,” this song is played by a band (Letters to Cleo) at the end credits.
I have not seen that movie but I love Letters to Cleo.
First thing I think of when I hear this song.
The Letters to Cleo cover is also great!
@@3DJapan Worth seeing. It's a "modern" take on Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" with Heath Ledger (RIP) and Julia Stiles in the leads. I enjoyed the heck out of it and I rewatch it whenever I get the chance. I bought the amazing soundtrack too and it is currently on my iPod.
that movie breaks my heart now
Cheap Trick were a classic example of the rock cliche about being "big in Japan." The live "At Budokan" album turned out to be their launch pad for success in the US.
It was such a big deal playing on that 'stage' there too, because after the '64 Olympics Budokan's been used for sumo wrestling, which is like a religion for some in Japan.
Same thing happened to Deep Purple. Machine Head was not selling as well as hoped, live album came out, and the rest is history
The original version is pretty boring to me. This live version of it made it a hit. It does it up and added a lot of much needed energy to it.
Agreed. The whole Budokan album is excellent. Cheap Trick is the OG "big in Japan" and amazing live. I've seen them 3 times now, including the concert with ZZ Top and Bad Company in Dallas in 2019. I would definitely see them again. Daxx Nielsen replaced Bun E. Carlos on drums and Robin's son Robin Taylor Zander has filled in for Tom in the past. I'm glad this lyrics edition was done from Budokan. Surrender is better on Budokan.
One of the very few times the live version is much better than the studio version.
@@hifijohn Celebration day by LZ is another one.
In 1978, these guys were Beatles level royalty in Japan, but wasn't until this album was available domestically that they broke in America. They had another comeback in 88, with " the flame" and " don't be cruel"
@@hifijohn crazy thing is, the rest of the In Color album is perfection. The only song I hated was this, but then Budokan redeemed it
One of my all time favorite songs. Cheap Trick is so underrated. They've been around since the mid 70s and are a total rabbit hole to go down!
I think the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd you're making is because of Rick Nielsen the lead guitarist. It's not even the style of his playing necessarily, (even though there are some similarities) but the way he inserts the lead in this song in-between verses and phrases. You really have to stretch to *make* that connection, but I think that's what it is. I've rarely encountered someone as sensitive to music as you are in that regard. It's fascinating.
Lynyrd Skynyrd and CT. I love them both but there is nothing in their sound that is remotely similar. I love your points trying to help her out- must be a lawyer😂
I think the connection was more of the vibe of the era, that the musicians produced an era vibe because of the shared cultural experiences due to the times they lived through.
@@flyingburritobro68 🤣Hey it was worth a shot.
@@zzzzzach Stadium rock vibe, this being a live performance in front of a huge crowd, and a good chance what they listened to of Skynyrd also being a live performance, or at least one pitched for an open-air concert, I can see her picking up on the same kind of energy, it does have that feel.
To piggyback on that, his use of reverb and the way he bends a chord. And definitely the crowd ties into the live version of Free bird they watched.
Very underrated band - they were excellent live in concert and there studio performance rocked. They are still doing it I hear.
Rik Nielsons guitar licks is what makes this song a classic to me. They has another big song in the 80s called the The Flame. It's a great song. My wife who's a 90s kid even loves it.
I saw them live in '82 when I was still in highschool. One of the most memorable things about that concert was Rick. The dude is an entertainer besides being a great guitar player. He literally had us laughing our asses off. Sure Robin Zander's voice is great and they're all talented, but Rick made it great!
They had a lot of great hits like Dream Police, Surrender, She's Tight, and their cover of Ain't That a Shame wasn't too shabby either.
The Flame released in 1988
Lex's abnormal way to feel music is freaking me out. Im 51. I have heard all this in real time over time. How does she know that this song released in 77 feels like Lynard Skynard from 75? This is insane. Her ability to do this is frequent. The CIA is going to be contacting you guys. She is going to be in a movie like They Stare at Goats. Lol. I love your channel and chemistry. You 2 are awesome. You guys seem to have the team relationship most people dream of. Keep posting!
62 here. I grew up on this stuff as it came out. Lex has really connected to the 70s vibration, no doubt about it. Maybe past life, who knows. She is primarily the emotional, Brad primarily the analytical. Both absolutely vital which makes them such a great team. B&L: your kid(s) will be amazing.
This pop rock song came out in '77, "Free Bird" came out '73. I can't personally make the connection. While there may be some overlap, it's two wildly different fan bases.
This album was a live album, "Live at BUdakhan". Many rock bands played there in the 70's and recorded live albums there.
Well now you need to watch "Surrender" which is an equally famous and great hit from Cheap Trick.
This song was written by Rick Nielson the lead guitarist for Cheap Trick, This live version became a hit from their album "Live at Budokan."
I feel like one of the few who always preferred the studio cut. Way back, I saw them warm-up BOCult and they did this live - fantastic sound in that auditorium that night.
Popular band in Detroit. Saw them live downtown. Played free in the street. Cheap Trick always got a lot of love there and the pretty sure that the feeling was mutual.
Epic Roller Skating Rink music! I wanted to sing this to so many girls.
Cheap Trick's "Live at Budokan" and "Dream Police" were when the band was at the peak of their powers. Some called them "new wave" and some said they were "the world's greatest bar band:" what they were was a group of guys that brought fun into rock & roll. You should explore their catalog more... lots of gems.
Greatest American Rock band IMO...
So many years, so many great songs.
This song is so damn nostalgic for me! Growing up, my Dad played drums for a ton a bands and his late best friend was the lead signer for one of their bands, LemonGrass. I still remember watching them play this song at shows vividly and it was always a favorite of mine. Almost forgot it was actually someone else who sang it originally! R.I.P. Craig
Great reaction you both! Keep it up!
You all needed to see this group live. They put on a great show!
Loudest show I ever went too!!!
@@glenchapman3899 I went to a WHO concert. Even louder
@@merleedwards8685 Well the Who and Deep Purple traded off for years trying to be the loudest band. I think the Who eventually won when someone recorded 120 decibels a hundred feet from the stage during one of their concerts.
Cheap Trick Surrender the studio version. Classic Rock at its best!
This is Rock and Roll. Burn from the first bar. Shine up the old brown shoes... I want you to want me... Fucksake. No one makes music like these boyz anymore.
The theme for That 70s Show was done by Cheap Trick
Lex - in over 40 years of listening to this song and Lynyrd Skynyrd I never put them together - but I can hear it now. You are not crazy. This time.
I think its the guitar tone, but I agree … I never put the two together but now I can see it. I just cant out my finger on precisely why.
I wasnt hearing it myself...
Till the guitar solo that is
Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan is another album from my youth. I was fortunate to come up in that era.
Dwight Yoakam has a great country-style cover.
Simply a great hit song. There's nothing left but to enjoy.
What I love about Lex is she comes up with these comments that seem out of left field and then I think about them and yea, she's right. I would never have associated Cheap Trick with Lynyrd Skynyrd but yea, the guitar work sounds very similar. Way to go Lex and thanks again for your perspective and insights.
Bit of a reach, but okay. It's a very loose similarity at best ;)
Yeah very big reach but ok🤣
Ya IDK, this Cheap Trick song has a little too much of a "pop" rock sound to say relate to Skynard. IMHO
I can see where she is coming from. Guitar licks mostly.
amazing how much amazing music came from the 70's 80's 90's a lot of this music is timeless and will always be listened too, glad your discoing all this gems
Their best albums are their first 3 Cheap Trick, In Color, and Heaven Tonight. First album is heavy. Good song all around. Just good old Rock n Roll.
Mandocello, Big Eyes, California Man, Auf Wiedersehen, Heaven Tonight, Voices, Dream Police, Gonna Raise Hell, Tonight It's You... I could go on and on. Such a great catalog from these guys.
*Holy s#%t! I can't believe I spaced "Reach Out" off the Heavy Metal soundtrack. Such a great tune also.
Forgot "He's a whore"
Tonight it's you is killer
Auf Wiedersehn! The killer!
That look Brad gave the camera briefly when Lex was trying to explain what she meant, had me rolling! XD
Kiss & Cheap Trick at the Cow Palace back in 1977 was my second concert...I was a Kiss fan and didn't know much about Cheap Trick at that time...I've been a rabid cheap trick fan ever since that show, great band and great album.
Yup I was there too. A Tuesday August 16th 1977. I thought Cheap Trick was good and had a huge stage sound. I remember Paul Stanley told all 14,000 in attendance at the Cow Palace that Elvis Presley had passed away!!! Great concert that I still remember too this very day in 2024!!!! 👍🎸
Cheap Trick was the soundtrack of my middle school years!!!!
Cheap Trick!! So f’n GREAT!!! Totally underrated band. One of the best bands ever.
The Guitar tone in the background for much of the sing has a very similar Tone, to Lynyrd Skynyrd
I remember doing my best skating tricks when this song came on at "The Roller Dome"...I was amazing.!!.or so I thought
Letters to Cleo did a cover of this for the 1999 movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Cheap Trick appeared in my home town rock venue on Dec 22, 1976. It was a great concert!
this is one of my favorite movies, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles
They were one of few groups who intentionally presented a quirky image w/ the two rock star looking dudes and the bizarro guitar player and Dad on drums. Most bands who did that instantly put themselves into one hit wonder territory.
Good song as many songs I loved when this song came on the radio as a kid.
One of America's all-time best bands.
I really have been binge watching all of y’all’s video that feature some of my favorite songs 😂
That was the love of my life, Sue Bee Honey's favorite song.
I think a cover band sang this during the end credits to the film 'Ten things I hate about you'.
Letters to Cleo with vocalist Kay Hanley
“Emotional undertone”…….wow !
I absolutely love how you guys get right into it instead of a bunch of talk like some creators! I can hear what she's saying in the rolling guitars about Lynard Skynard. Bow bediddly bow de bow!
The tone of the guitar in this song, does resemble Lynard Skynard.
I bought this as my first 45 record single. From a Kmart. They used to have record departments in every store. Thought it was great and still do.
Now you can go to Barnes and Noble for records.
I bought the 45 of sultans of swing by dire straits at the local Zayre back in the day.
The whole album "Cheap Trick Live at Budokan" flows so well start to finish. I recommend listening to it in this manner. The crowd plays along so well. Fun times! Cheap Trick brings gr8 memories!
If you were in middle school in the late 70's this was IT!
Try "Dream Police" by Cheap Trick.....they have lots of great songs.
Letters to Cleo did a good cover of this song in the movie "10 things I hate about you" that came out in 1999.
You're both so funny! :p Now that you've opened the Cheap Trick box of goodies, you MUST listen to "High Roller" and "California Man"!! The band was really into The Beatles and many critics poo poo'd them for sounding similar with their first album release. But like others before and after them, (aka Jimi Hendrix, The Stray Cats, etc), they had to come into the USA as "imports" to gain success. Hence the Live at Budokan album launched them into stardom! Thanks for the laughs :)
These guys still sound as good today as they did back then.
@edd Seing Robin on Live from Daryl's house was awesome.
Yup. As others have said, this song seemed to be EVERYWHERE in 1979. This version is what got me into CT.
I think what Lex is hearing is the distortion on the rhythm guitar segments…they sound a little like Skynyrd….that’s all I can think of.
This is from “Live At Budokan”….one of the greatest live albums of all time and it blew up this band into the stratosphere!
Saw them live in 1983. Such a great song.
This song was in a TV add….I believe a MasterCard Ad, one of those “priceless” ones.
It has definitely been covered, and may have been sampled too, but it was definitely on tv as an ad.
"Tonight It's You" is another classic of theirs I think you'll love.
My first concert was Cheap Trick New Years Eve 1979 in L.A. because of this song!
Cheap Trick started out as a Chicago area punk band and Skynyrd was, of course, a Jacksonville, FL southern rock band. But the guitar licks and classic 70s classic warm, fat tones are VERY similar in this song and some of the Skynyrd songs. I can definitely get that connection. Fairly straight-forward rock songs that are taken over the top by the passion and the little extra instrumental flourishes put in by each member of both bands.
My dad had a print shop and he'd play the radio in the back where we worked. I remember hearing this version when the single was released and it was one of those snap my head around moments. I loved it. I went right out and bought the 45 at Turner's Music Shop.
If you've seen the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, there is a cover version of this song in there somewhere.
Omg finally ,luv this song.
The band Cheap Trick is known for having opened for other bands though the decades. One band member said he was fine with that when they were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
This is the very first song I ever heard to which I had an epiphany moment and said to myself.. "So THIS is what Rock n' Roll sounds like!" I was 8 years old. It was 1978.
You two are an absolute trip! … A fun & entertaining one.
Even live Rick Nielson sounds like two guitars at once most the time. I've ended up seeing them 3 times. The first time in 1978, they were opening for R.E.O. Speedwagon and Foghat (the headliner), my friends and I had no idea who they were! lol.
This song to me is the 1964 Beatles in turbo mode. The beginning drum rhythm also sounds like Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz”
There are a couple of YT videos of Bun E Carlos with a history of drum "licks". Don't know why they use that word, as I've always riff. /shrug
"undertone" ...."of that era" - You're right Lex. It was still there in the late 1980's with the Wembly version of New Sensation by INXS - People sang from their hearts. People were free and had a good time.
Always have loved this song. Saw them too in late 80s or early 90s. Outside concert with Joan Jett in CT.
Great start. Now react to "surrender","Hot love", She's Tight", "3D" ," Dancing the night away", "Big Eyes" to name a few👍👍
They hit Surrender first. ✌
@@jeffreyaverett1800 😊 thanks I didn't know
Check out their version of Ain't That A Shame!
✌❤
My favorite track on their Budokan record.
Hi Rebecca!!! Keep Rock Alive!! 🤘🏽🖤🔥🙌🏼 ℁
She has “Weird Genius connection’s” You’re exactly right bro! You have a great woman there! Love you both! Peace!
"I Want You To Want Me" was covered by Letters to Cleo and was used in the movie "10 Things I Hate About You." Lots of people heard the song there first.
Songs that sound familiar and you may have heard before and you can't place where from, alot are possibly are from movies and commercials.
I saw Cheap Trick with Kiss in 1977 in Seattle. It was my first concert. My Dad wanted to hear a Kiss song before he okayed it, so I played him "Beth"....lol.
LOL....the very song I sang (as it played in the background) to my girlfriend, now wife for 30 years, whilst in a military dorm room, Yokota AB Japan in 1992. Ahh the memories!!
You are right on about the era. The Budokan has awesome acoustics and the Japanese girls (primarily) were on fire with their chorus ;) It was a super lively audience, and that's the way they get into concerts even now. All in. All totally in.
This was recorded live in Japan in, I think 1977). By the way, today is Robin Zander's (lead singer) birthday!!!
I was lucky enough to see Cheap Trick at the Philadelphia Sprectrum in the mid 70's. One of the most entertaining shows I ever saw. Just a fun band to watch. I think that the opening act was Rick Derringer (Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo). Try the song Surrender by Cheap Trick..
Old school
1960 the Ventures, Walk Don't Run. The Dick Clark show. It will blow your mind.
Saw them before the Budokan album when they replaced an opening act for Kansas. Blew the roof off!
It's the guitar Brad , She can't explain with the guitar does to Her , but, the riffs and moods of the guitar gives Her those vibes that She can't explain , Lex is a Guitar Girl , She gets it . and , btw , She can't help it , She has an understanding far deeper , mentally, than Her vocabulary can explain , VIBES , GUITAR GIVES HER TOSE VIBES , HELL YEA !
Cheap Trick! One of my favorite bands of all time! Great review!
I love Cheap Trick.
Rick Nielson has a massive guitar collection, and he is also a kickass guitar player. I often wish I was Rick Nielson for both, and only, these reasons.
This was a couple years after Lynrd hit it big, and there are certain scale similarities in the humbucker sound, that can remind you of Skynrd .
I saw Cheap Trick in 1997 in a little club in Upstate NY. It was a great show. We were like 5 feet from the stage.
This song is from around 1977, 1978. It took about a year for this to make it's way to the top.
Lex caught that Southern rock sound of the guitar riffs
At 3:04 in the video, right after Lex says she hears Lynnyrd Skynard, you pick up the song again with the line "....you to beg me", the guitar riff right after that could be straight out of a Skynard song.
This is the live at Budokan version (the best one). This song is in the middle of a great three set starting with their cover of Ain't that a Shame, and lastly Surrender.
You guys are awesome and I watch every day love the energy and your comments . I just think you miss so much by not watching the videos or live performances
Lex, you gotta watch a live performance of this tune. The visuals are an equal part of the experience.
Live at Budokan....cheap tricks break thru album. It certainly is in the Era of skynard.
Cheap Trick. Rockford Illinois...
Absolute best Cheap Trick song, and best version.
My favorite by them. I like this live version better than the studio version.
This song does not sound the same without 10,000 Japanese screaming at the top of their lungs to it. Not at all.
@@halycon404 The band is feeding off of the energy that's directed toward them. It's hyping them up, they're putting their body and soul into it. For the studio version, they're bored, in comparison. Just singing and playing to a soulless microphone in a soundproof room.
Shout out to Cheap Trick, my hometown boys of Rockford, il.
Cheap Trick is from Rockford, Illinois
Check out there song "Gonna Raise Hell"
