  • Follow along with Michelle as she guides you through Beginner elbow exercises you can do after a broken elbow or surgery. Once your cast comes off your elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand can be very stiff. In this video we will be doing light exercises to your hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. These exercises are perfect for someone looking to increase their range of motion, once cleared by your doctor.
In this follow along routine, we will be doing a total of 10 repetitions of each exercises: 5 reps actively followed by 5 reps of assisted stretches of the same exercise.
First, we will start with elbow flexion and supination which are 2 of the most important motions to get back quickly. Then we will do elbow extension , pronation, and a light combined gripping exercise with a towel.
The only equipment needed is a towel and a pillow (optional).
I hope you find these exercises helpful and they provide relief of stiffness as you are started your recovery journey.
Please comment below to let me, and others, know how this real time hand routine felt for you!

I wasn't given any instructions on exercises to do post-elbow surgery (other than "resume normal activities" at my 7 week post surgery appointment) so luckily found this video. My goal is to now improve my range of motion so that when they send me to physical therapy in the next couple of weeks, I'll already be close to full-range of motion.

This is really great, thank you. It’s been two weeks since the dislocation and it became apparent that my range of motion was very limited due to stiffness. I’m wondering: 1. how often should I do these exercises per day? 2. Does the time spent with static elbow movement earlier on limit the full range of movement later on?

Thank you so much for the video. I also fractured my elbow radial head two days after my fracture orthopedic doctor said to start moving my arm to supination and he tried doing for me and it was so painful! He said I had to endure the pain so for a couple of weeks I was doing it like he said but I was grabbing my hand to move my palm upwards but the pain was horrible, I endured the pain like doctor said. Now my wrist hurts! I went to my follow up appointment and I asked the doctor for physical therapy and he said I didn’t need it because what I’m doing is fine!! Now I realized I was doing it wrong by grabbing my palm and moving my palm to supination. I’m doing your exercises and little by little I’m feeling better.

After getting my cast off and the OK from my consultant to move my arm up and down I was unsure what to do for the best, especially as I have my first physio appointment three weeks away. So, these muscle moving exercises have been a God send for me to begin and take courage and confidence in your very encouraging, gentle series of exercises. I can feel my atrophied/sore bicep muscle feel stretched and grateful and if I persevere, each day with these moves I hope to get more flexion in my elbow. It will be a long road though with your calm, reassuring, knowledgeable advice I have confidence that my arm can and will improve. So thank you, thank you, Michelle, for this invaluable film of super advice and encouragement. Adrian in the UK in Nov 2023

congratulations! i feel like it's taking very long, i am two months from surgery. as a reference, how long did it take for ou to regain mobility? for me it's the flexion and stretching of the elbow which really annoys me.

@@anne-mariesvennberg9840 I'm certain it's different for everyone. My bandages came off in about 7 to 9 days and that's when I began using these exercises. I started physical therapy 2 weeks later. I remember being two months out of surgery and being frustrated that I wasn't back to normal. It takes more like 4 to 6 months. I never gave up and continued exercising after I finished physical therapy which took 3 months. I have always liked going to the gym and resumed my regular workout, incorporating some of the physical therapy exercises. Good luck. You can do this!

Michelle, these are pretty much the exercises my PT's gave me for my broken elbow. I was getting quite frustrated/impatient at my elbow still being bent after a month. I know it takes time to heal...that is what got me into this mess in the first place! LOL Your video gives me a friendly face to work with me on the way to recovery, and a few extras like where to place the other hand to help move arm...with the visual. I can do the exercises my wonderful PT gals gave me,. But having a visual person to encourage...and you really look like you have an elbow issue,... keeps me focused daily between PT visits. Thank you for this! I’m 6 months out from my osteopathic surgery on my humerus(split up the middle from landing wrong in an accident). I’m scared of my tricep. Probably irrational, but I feel like if I really try to push that tricep to extend my elbow, that I will hurt myself somehow. Do you have tips or logic to help me get through that or better gauge how far I can push myself?

I really do hope you answer my question so a few weeks ago I fell and landed on my elbow. doctors said I had a close small fracture. It's really not a big of a deal they said but then after a couple of weeks after all the swelling subsided, I realized that I can't bend my arm fully and I can't straighten it. Is it really a normal thing after an injury to the elbow that we can't move it to the full extend? I'll have to meet a doctor for a reassessment for my elbow but I really am anxious about it. I'm worried that I can't no longer bend my arm to the full extend anymore. what's the reason? doctors said there's no dislocation but why I can't bend my elbow? I hope you can maybe shed some light on this matter. Thank you.

I had braces and screws fitted in my left arm for an elbow fracture operation nearly a month ago, and now the cast is off and ready for exercises, My wrist, elbow and shoulder are really stiff, so it's making me feel a bit uneasy about recovering mobility. My surgeon told me I can recover 70% ROM, but in your experience, do surgeons always approach this question very conservatively? People who contacted me said friends who suffered the same injury recovered back to normal within a year. Thanks for the tips.
