And then you don't hear the washer going and you think "was there a car crash nearby? Did a tree fall? No, I didn't hear anything. Maybe it was an earthquake." And THEN you check the shake map.

My sister was driving during the 6.-something in 2012, 2013? In Humboldt. She thought it was wind. Which is totally possible because the 101 by the Humboldt bay is windy AF. When she got to work everything was on the ground.
There was a 4.1 a couple weeks ago near San Diego and I was on the couch. My roommate was making coffee. I felt a small jolt and asked "did you feel that?" She did not. Went to the earthquake website and it was an earthquake! We spent breakfast talking about all the eathquakes we've felt.
Edit: and driving during an earthquake is not dangerous at all. Cars have suspension. You're not likely to feel anything under a 5.0. After that you'll think "wtf is wrong with this road?" After that, you'll think "wow, it must be windy."

Also Fun Fact: The reason SoCal residents put a "The" in front of freeway numbers is because our freeways started out with names and not numbers, the Hollywood Freeway is the 101, the Harbor Freeway is the 110, The San Diego Freeways are both the 405 and the 5, The 5 is also the Santa Ana and the Golden State Freeway depending on what part you're on, Same for the 91 which is both the Artesia and Riverside Freeway, The Long Beach Freeway is the 710 and so on. It a cool bit of SoCal history.

That's an interesting story! Up in SF it's basically the reverse... just 80, 280, 380, 580, 680, 780, 880, 980... Oh! And 238! 480 disappeared a long time ago, tho. But I guess my point is, there's not many freeways that we ever actually have to deal with (so much that just by naming the freeway numbers you know what part of the Bay Area I'm talking about), so just the number is good enough. That said hearing people call it "the 101" instead of just "101" is still way too weird.

"Because that's how driving west works."

A few notes: In N Out is good… FOR THE PRICE. People don’t realize Californians love it because it’s cheap, and quality food within that price range. It’s easy to find better burgers elsewhere but it’s a hard to find a good burger that is that price and that good. LA has had a huge burger explosion lately and there are some amazing cheap burger pop ups here that are totally worth checking out besides In N Out.
Also Hella is only a thing said in the Bay Area or said by people from the Bay Area.
Only people not from Orange County called it The OC. People who live there say the whole name.
Los Angeles is so huge that you can have extremely different experiences depending on what neighborhood you live in even if you’re only a mile or two apart.
Also in Los Angeles distance is measured not* by miles, but by time since the two are not correlated at all. If you come here to visit, definitely get to know a local otherwise you’ll make bad choices and get stuck in traffic your entire trip.

As a californian.... you arent wrong... like at all. I had to drive through 3 of those regions just for work... daily. The valley is hot and dry and filled with nothing but dry air, then their is the bay which is just CROWDED and busy busy busy and filled with tech. The City is what it is and then there is actually a region you missed. Santa Cruz. Mostly because to get their you either need to be patient, crazy or accidently got lost. The roads to get their are narrow and people in sports cars pretend its F1... even when traffic gets bad. Somehow i rarely saw anyone die.
