Figured I would do this video to help stop a few of the unnecessary future one-star reviews haha Seems like a large amount of players that rate this game horribly just do not understand the style of game they are delving into. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

The one thing this game and dark souls games lacks for me is the motivation. If the game is going to be that hard I want cut scenes as a reward. What usually drives me to get through a difficult game is that I want to know what happens next. Probably a product of me growing up on RPG's.

I think people understand this game they just feel like it's a 1. You do gamers a huge disservice buying saying it's just because they don't understand. I understand it fine and for me it's a good game that recycles everything from their older games. Control scheme,engine,u.i.,story,inventory management, characters, etc. Not to mention the demons souls remake looks absolutely stunning while elden ring looks ok.

people give it one star because they can't handle rejections or challenges. It's no different than people getting rejected by a girl after asking her out, so they start calling her ugly.
It's not that they don't understand the style of the game, it's just that the game reminds them that they are bad in this type of game and it hurts their fragile feelings, so they review bomb the game.

Most of the reviews only have two reviews. This and Horizon Zero Dawn. This is obviously a Peanutbutter and Jelly game dev their overly produce piece of average gaming is out shined by the masterpiece that is the Elden Ring.

I have a hard time getting over the fence and buying this game because I am not 100% sure I would enjoy having to fight the same boss 50 times. I do not mind the no-hand holding, in fact I love that aspect. I do not mind the difficulty, though I wish there were more of a curve to it. But I am a completionist and explorer at heart and when I play games I want to see every corner of the map, break every barrel, turn over every rock and my excitement and joy comes from the exploration, the discovery. So the idea of being blocked from exploration because I have to fight a very difficult creature X number of times just makes me think I may not enjoy this game much.

@@cimtaurus1605 I'm pretty biased towards fromsoft games and think they're amazing. Elden ring is THE game if you're interested in trying it. You will die, alot. Hell, start of the game pretty much requires new players to die at least twice and veterans die a minimum of twice too. The game is soooo accessible. You can fight sooooo many bosses as soon as you enter limgrave (essentially the very start). First main boss is designed to wreck players completely with difficult for some vets. It teaches you how to adapt as most players will run or dodge away from it and that's where his moveset targets you. If you get stuck on him, you can just go somewhere else, get stronger and come back later easily. Theres sooo much to explore off the bat and do other than the boss. I HIGHLY recommend trying the game out yourself. So many ways to fight your enemies and customise your builds, it's ridiculous. If an enemy feels too strong, it is for your level. Tree sentient you encounter very early and its best to run past him and return later when you're more experienced and stronger. Couldn't praise the game enough tbh and if you dont like it, you can always return it but im certain you'll be hooked. Once you finally best a boss that's been destroying you for a while, you feel amazing! That feeling is one of the MANY things we love about souls games and im sure you'll understand too soon enough

@@cimtaurus1605 As someone who has played and beaten every soulsborn game including Sekiro (my favorite), and also as someone who detests the elitism "get gud" crowd, my advice would be to buy it and give a REAL shot. I gaurentee when you first start playing that you are going to start having some doubts, KEEP GOING. To address your concern about having to restart a boss 50 times, this can happen in most other souls game, but in Elden ring the world is soooo big and there are so many places and other bosses to do that if one area or one boss in particular is really getting on your nerves, go fight other stuff. You will level up and get better gear, making that super annoying boss much easier 5-10 hours later when you come back. Just my 2 cents.
PS: These games almost never block you off from exploration or discovery because an enemy is to difficult. The truth is you can literally just run past almost every enemy in the game and pick up items or just keep going the direction YOU want. Also understand that the game actually communicates to you and helps you through death. Its telling you "maybe your not ready for this guy yet, sneak past or go somewhere els. Its okay you dont have to fight every Tom Dick and Harry in your way."

I died constantly, almost to the point where I said screw it and tried to cheese it only to die even more. New souls game player here at first I hated it. But I decided to beat a few bosses before I gave up entirely. I ended up beating margit and I was hooked from then on. I realized that most enemies telegraph their attacks and leave openings for me to abuse. That’s all it took to show me that it’s possible to beat the game as long as I studied the way I died the first time and adjusted accordingly. Right now I’m at the royal capital and about to fight morgot and all though I do take breaks at times I enjoy myself most of the time that I play it. I bought Elden Ring despite never playing a souls game in my life, and I did it with the intent of it being my first souls game. I had always wanted to try the souls genre but I was put off by the difficultly, but when I finally picked it up I found that I got used to the combat quite easily and I really did surprise myself. It’s actually really satisfying. I researched the stats system and how to effectively use stats and what I should invest my runes in based off what build I wanted. By the time I reached the first boss, even when I had loaded my brain with combat tips and I used every item to assist me at my disposal I died over and over and over and over to margit. But that wasn’t a bad thing, infact it made it more rewarding I did finally do it and knowing that I did that as a first time souls player makes me feel so rewarded and I’m excited to see the rest of the game, I intend to stick with this until the end :)

That's one reason I think ER is a better entry for new players.
In the older games if you hit a wall and was stuck on a boss you had to beat that boss to progress. Which works for those games, but it Eldin Ring if you're stumped on a boss, you can just leave the area and go explore. Grind a bit and maybe get a few extra levels. And then hit the boss when you're ready.

Please don't ruin your experience by following youtube guides for "OP builds" or "INSANE farms" etc.. They will only ruin the game for you. The game is intended to be vague, difficult and have easy to miss sections. The whole point of the game is (in my opinion) to suffer, enjoy and learn in the first playthrough. Things are meant to be missed.
Farming will come in later NG+'s. NG+7 a trash mob will likely give the same souls as a boss on the first playthrough.
I'm still not even half way through so don't know if this tip is as relevant compared to the souls games but if it is... Don't waste your weapon upgrade materials unless you're sure.

@Rapo Nose RPG is an extremely broad term. Some games are completely built around RPG elements such as Skyrim, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, and KOTOR which are all Western RPG's. Games like Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption have western RPG elements, but not nearly as much as those other games. Those other games have insane amounts of dialogue choices, character (stats and reputation) building, quests, etc. while Elden Ring for example has character (stat) building but not much of the other stuff. So it really just depends what RPG elements you like, otherwise the criteria is too broad. Side note: I specified western RPG's because there are also JRPG's (Japanese) that share some of the same elements but are not quite the same.

What I like about Souls game is that they don't seem to change their mechanics just for the sake of change. It looks like there is some continuity between each game, including this one. Unlike Final Fantasy, in which every game sports unique mechanics; liking one doesn't mean you'll like the others.
If you've got a good receipe, improve on it, but don't change it uselessly. Well done.

      @@ChuckMothaEfenNorris
That is a tricky question, in the long run, no, you’ll regret not knowing a lot of things beforehand. So, in order to avoid that and give you the best guide/spoiler free experience, I’ll list the most important things to remember!
      1. Never kill interactable NPCs without looking them up, such as for quest lines or story progression.
      2. Pick up every crafting material you can, I realized very early on that I should’ve have skipped over all those Red Berries and Yellow Flowers. There’s no reason not to pick up every crafting material you see.
      3. A lot of areas on the map that have important boss fights are marked with distinctive features on the map without you even having to discover them. Such as the Minor Erdtree Bosses (All marked by large trees on the map, just go to the base of any one you see and there will be a bossfight there) or dungeon areas such as mines, catacombs, or caves (All marked by deep red and orange blotches on the map resembling doorways or holes.
Note: Included in this list, (a very small amount of) a special kind of bossfight can be spotted on the map without having to discover them. But only a small few. Look for circles in the terrain resembling a target, you’ll find one.
      4. Mark points of interest on the map, the marker system is very useful for organizing Abandoned Bossfights, Item Farming Areas, Unexplored Areas, and even Specific NPC locations if you need. You have a plethora of symbols to use with the marker system.
      5. If you start an NPC quest, finish it. Interacting with too many characters and starting too many quest lines at once can not only be overwhelming, but also has a good chance to cause some sort of issue with other quests.
      6. Stay below the “Heavy Load” threshold. Exceeding this makes you a lot less nimble in fights, keeping a clear and organized equipment roster is key.
      7. Never be afraid to look stuff up. If you want to avoid spoilers then just go step by step. But don’t be afraid to look up the next step in a quest line or a puzzle you can’t solve. It would most likely take you hours upon hours to find what you are looking for and you may end up quitting that activity entirely. Also things like item or boss locations are useful to know, look those up if you need.
      8. Read messages, they can be the difference between life and death if they warn you of an ambush. Also, messages left by other players can lead you to hidden treasure, mark important areas, or generally aid you in your journey. Also they are just funny to read most of the time.
      9. Magic is overpowered. Weapon enchantments, Summons, player boosting spells, offensive magic, all are extremely powerful in the game. Use them only if you plan on playing on easy mode.
      10. Know what you want to play as. Your levels get increasingly more expensive as you level up, knowing what you want to play as such as a Strength, Magic, or Dexterity fighter gives you the chance to level up the things you need.
DONT FORGET TO LEVEL UP VIGOR
I hope this was useful, take all this into mind and you should be golden! Have fun!

Don't give up. I beat demon souls for PS5 then picked up sekiro. Sekiro is the hardest game i have ever played.. Now im on the last boss fight. I have noticed with these from soft games. You need to jump around the levels/areas until you are strong enough to take on other enemies in those tougher levels/ areas.. For example in demon souls there are 5 worlds. You would think go through them 1-5. When it is easiest to do world 1. Then some of 2 because it is harder than 3 and 4. . Then go do most of 3. Then some of 4. Then back to 2. Then back to 3 and 4. They do not explain this to you. Some people figure it out. Others quit.

Meaning 150 still allows someone to be super powerful and specialize in a build, yet still allows builds diversity. Higher than 150 makes you basically good at too many things. This is the level the community settles on so that everyone can keep connecting with each other via online play for coop, invasions, boss fights, and duels. If you just play solo and never wanna do anything online then yea I guess go high as you want. Especially when you get to unravel it as you progress but don't get the full picture unless you pay attention. I knew of the soulsborne games and their notorious difficulty for a long while, but never decided to get into it. What brought me in this time was the open-world aspect. I'm level 90ish right now and feel like I haven't even gotten to some of the deeper intricacies of the story yet. Elden Ring was my first Soulsbourne game and I can't lie, this is the best game I've ever played. I'm a keyboard and mouse player and I was actually fine with the controls. I have to agree though that the initial controls are not very intuitive so I changed some of the inputs so I could play it in better way. More specifically, changing spells and the flasks with the extra mouse buttons was a lifesaver cause there's no way you could use the arrow keys while fighting Maliketh for example, which is a pretty agile boss. I am at NG+1 with 150+ hours in the game and planning to 100% it on Steam.
P.S. Killing Malenia was the most stressful and rewarding boss of the game, definitely deserves the crown of the hardest boss in game. Not sure it matters but it was a strength/faith build so I'm not sure if it was as hard as whatever you used.

For any new people who are considering buying this game and want their first playthrough to be somewhat less torturous: use shield and spear. Souls games have always rewarded using shield, and spears allow you to poke while still holding up the shield. It's not a "win thr game for free" card, but it helps.

I have over 5,000 hours in Skyrim over 3,000 in each Fallout 4 and New Vegas. I like the survival level of gameplay and I am one of those who like to mod them to make them harder, play them until they break, rinse and repeat. And we won't even get started on older games like the original Baldur's Gate series. My 'very limited' gaming experience finds this game extremely frustrating just from watching it!!!

I didn't play souls games before. I bought Elden Ring and already have 200hours of playtime. It must be 10 years ago since I enjoyed a single player that much. I am over 30yo and have already some gaming experience.

Ive played some of the other games, and with this one i got real excited about exploring the world and spent like 60-70hrs in the earlier parts of the game just exploring. Needless to say I got over leveled and my experience was way too easy. At 100 hrs total ive got back to some difficult stuff (a couple extremely difficult bosses). Point is, if you are experienced and want a consistent challenge try not to get too lost in exploring that you get op. On the other hand, if you are new and are having a hard time feel free to grind a little or just explore and you will level pretty quick.

I'm so thankful you made this video. I've always swithered about getting the game, I know it's not normally my kind of thing but I've heard of so many who say they loved it despite being the same as me. But honestly? I don't care how cool a game is, how rewarding , how enthralling or engaging, if I die 10, 20, 50 times to one boss or even mob, it's not for me. At all. So thanks for the honesty. I watched like 4 videos before yours and they all insisted that whoever it is will absolutely still find something to enjoy about the game even if this Is true. Cheers man

Good overview! This is my first Souls-type game, and I admit, I'm feeling some frustrations from the constant dying, though I'm getting used to it. I 100% agree that it (ideally) needs a controller, my husband and I both bought game controllers for our PCs just for this game because keyboard & mouse was just not working well for either of us, it's definitely optimized for a controller.

Read about different builds and what equipment and stats enhances those builds. I can’t stress that enough. I have a blood build right now and with the right medallions and head gear, I’m wrecking sh*t. It makes a big difference than trying to fumble your way through

Good review, I am glad you made this one. I have been seeing it promoted and played everywhere, but I am not a fan of Souls type games.
I do really respect the game maker for having true exploration and discovery in their game. That is rare. Most games excessively hand hold and guide you from location to location.

An important thing to note for a new player is to respect every enemy's capability to kill you in unexpected ways. You may kill hundreds of one enemy type to the point where they can't even touch you unless in large numbers. Until you encounter one on a narrow ledge and think "I got this no problem" until a second one emerges from the shadows to give you a gentle nudge into a bottomless pit

First time playing anything like Elden ring. Very intimidating at first. Frustrating.. yes. Challenging.. yes. The more I play the more intriguing it is. The culture and lore alone had me watching storyline videos and trying to get comfortable with the story as well as learning the mechanics.

Personally, I don't like the notion that this game compares to the older souls games. This game is a beast of its own to me. I tried going back and playing the original 3 games and personally didn't like them. They felt like awful exercises in frustration for no good reason. Elden Feels different to me. I loved Elden Ring. The older games...not so much.

Honestly we need to keep games like this around and promote games of this quality I’ve started dark souls 1 on my ps5 and while it makes me want to rip my dreads out over the ways I end up dying I acknowledge that the deaths are on me especially the bosses and that’s good because it pushes you to think outside the box and I hadn’t done that in a long time

Dragon Age doesn't have many cutscenes at all. That's called gameplay. Just because it's not slash slash roll roll doesn't mean it's not gameplay. If you're interacting (in this case, conversationally), then it's game ... play.

A lesser known game like those you listed you might want to check out is Encased, it's a CRPG I'd say is most similar to Wasteland 3 but with slightly less polish(devs first game so to be expected, great writing though), I'd suggest looking up a trailer it had me hooked before Elden Ring came out.

That first point is exactly why I was hesitant to get it, why I'll never get it now or any souls style game for that matter and why I play story driven singleplayers on story/normal difficulty, I play them for the story and to enjoy myself peacefully, not kicking and screaming because a boss killed me for the 100th time (that's an exaggeration btw) :)

Wolfheart, I'm 63 and have been playing games since before they invented difficulty levels. When every game came in one flavour. When PC's were made of wood and e-mail was delivered by a guy called Ernie through the mailbox. I forgotten many games I've played but Darksouls still lingers in my nightmares. So i think this is a must buy.

Great Video - I had already purchased the game prior to viewing. No I've never played a game like this other than Skyrim back in the day. No I wasn't expecting it to be as difficult as it is. Yes I am playing on PC but now I'm playing PC with a controller [I strongly advise this.!. Even If you think your keyboard skills are up there] which eases the way.
I did realise early on that it's a game where "skimming the surface" really isn't going to cut it and frankly considering the price I'm glad of that. You really do need to commit to this, not only to get results but enjoy it. In some ways it does remind me of the grind of Final Fantasy in terms of levelling character, weapons, magic etc. But it's so much more than that. The scenery and character design is awesome as is the feel.
It does feels a little like a musical instrument - practise, practise and more PRACTISE to achieve the result. It's not for the fain hearted or the impatient.
There's plenty of advice on TH-cam, Twitch and the rest of the guide outlets, however I believe you grow more if you just knuckle down and crack on tbh.
Thnx for the heads up and the video and the best of luck to all players.
