I also completely agree that Skyrims scaling enemies didn't feel that good to play against. I like feeling like I've progressed past points of a game. I don't want a spider in a starting area to be level 60 because it's "scaling" with me.
This drives me crazy, why bother with open world if it doesn’t matter what order I approach it because they’ll always be my level. In my opinion Morrowind was the best elder scrolls, even tho by today’s standards it’s a hot mess it really captures that open world vibe.
Scaling can be good, it's just that many game devs, especially Bethesda, are really bad at it. It's not fun to go around oneshotting everything because your build has become amazing... but at the same time their "solution" is just to make the enemies unrealistically tanky. "Damage sponginess" is a huge issue that dozens of Skyrim mods try to fix. The better way to scale is to give familiar enemies new abilities, resistances against certain strategies and better AI. Obviously they'll need some more health to just not be obliterated by you, but so often difficulty boils down to "this common bandit can take 18 chops from a greataxe"
It really just depends on the game. I couldn't imagine a game like Borderlands 2 not scaling enemies to your level in your third playthrough. It would just become boring.
Elden Ring is the type of game where you can take a wrong turn and be completely rewarded as long as you’re tenacious enough. It also convinced me to pick up a Souls game.
I resisted buying it for ages, because of it's links to the souls series and therefore, likely high difficulty level. But I'm really glad I did eventually buy it. What the game does so well is that it let's you prepare for as long as you like, before you take on the bigger challenges in the game. I will probably get DS 3 now, thanks to getting hooked on elden ring.
Its the type of game where u take a wrong turn, defeat a whole group of enemies and a mini boss just to get a shitty spell/incantation/mushroom that your never ever going to use. The exploration rewards generally suck in this game.
To be honest, while I was already over the moon after everything I’ve seen of this game, the two words you spoke in this video that made me happiest were ‘re-spec mechanic’.
@@halrichard1969 Personally, I really like having the option to re-spec and change my playstyle on the fly; I appreciate the freedom it gives me to experiment with different builds/ equipment without having to worry about locking myself into any specific role.
I love how there are random teleporter traps getting you to far away zones where you are completely underleveled. Trying to poke around and snatching some high level rare items is so satisfying.
I had a fun experience with this. I was like "Wow this map is pretty big, and I'm supposedly only in the starting area." Then I got teleported to something way up in the top and when I checked my map I said "HOLY SHIT THIS MAP IS HUGE"
This is exactly the review I was looking for as someone who wants to go in a fresh as possible and yet get some idea of the game. You have made the best review possible for that. Thank you!
@@CwamaCorn No fast traveling?!? You might as well start. When you finally beat the game you’re gonna be like, “Yeah I probably should have fast traveled.” Especially if you realize that you missed a quest or an item and have to backtrack all the way to a place like Caelid or something. There are also some important areas that you’ll be spending a lot of time in that aren’t physically connected to the mainland at all. So once you’re teleported to them, you’re gonna have to fast travel back to the mainland anyway in order to continue the game. There’s one place near the end game that you get teleported to, but if you leave that area and then need to go back, your only choice to do so will be to fast travel. Also the Four Belfries teleport you to places that you can only leave via fast travel. Might as well just rip off the bandaid and start fast traveling now so you don’t lose 100 hours of your life to backtracking.
@@ManateeMentality that’s why I put for the most part in parenthesis haha, I still do when I need to or if it’s a quick thing I need to do. Honestly I’ve been rewarded for traveling across the map on horse instead of fast traveling because every time I choose not to fast travel, I discover something awesome on my journey. Love this game
15:04 My friend played Oblivion without horse or fast travel. I imagine our co-op playtrough will be like when the fellowship chased after the hobbits that were being taken to Isengard. An epic hiking journey that will hopefully be more enjoyable than Gimli's experience.
that sounds fun, as long as you've got enough time on your hands. he said he took 60 hours, right? that was with his horse, and it may take him another 40 hours to finish.
I feel his approach sound super epic too, tho You're alone through open areas, and when big battles happen, you're joined with jolly cooperation, only to be on your own again Kinda Gandalf way
Tried that kinda playstyle in the past, with games like kingdom come deliverance, red dead 1 + 2 and the Witcher, to mention just a few. too many missions asked you to move between 2 locations across the entire map numerous times for simple fetch and delivery, that kind of emersion is to much like hardwork and my real job is plenty enough of tedious in my life.
As someone who has never really played any frontsoft games, I wasn't sure if I was gonna try Elden Ring. But after this video I am super hyped to try it out. Thank you for your intricate explanations. The amount of passion you have for these games truly shines through. EDIT: Just bought and pre-loaded the game! Wish me luck with my first soulslike :)
Same, never played a fromsoftware game and this looks really interesting and potentially fun but i don' t think my laptop would be able to handle it that well sadly even tho it meets the recommended req
As someone who was introduced to fromsoft from their grandfather who is an absolute book worm, be prepared. He found demon souls when it came out and we've beat every game together over the years and know the lore. Its a series you can't explain to those who don't try it. They're often referred to as hard games, but if my 70 year old grandpa can do it, so can you.
By far my favorite content you’ve done. I’ve been really doing my very best to avoid any types of spoilers (so I didn’t watch this, I listened) but I had to hear what you had to say. I am so excited, and this video has really made the wait worth it. TMI time: I had open heart surgery for a valve replacement in July and I jokingly said “I need to survive this so I can play elden ring.” And here we are! Thanks Pine.
Literally the only review I would trust for the game and was waiting for (mostly for any performance issues) I'm glad you like it Pineapple. When I get the free chance I'll happily explore the Lands Between.
I would suggest to watch some video of performance with your graphic card and cpu first tho. Performance really isnt best in this game. Idk about your setup but it might be problem if you have weaker gpu.
@@runek100 I got it and I'll get maybe a stutter every now and then when I'm running full tilt into a new cell. Other than that game's been buttery smooth. Real strange that some beefier cards aren't working as well.
@@justinrinker2480 glad to hear that, I still think they will polish it. Just that I was suprised how demanding the game was. But yeah enjoy, I still cant wrap my head around how good the game is.
This game is fun, but it's even more fun when u have friends to talk about it with. Giving eachother tips and pointers for bosses, telling eachother about cool item locations, etc has been great
I agree, everytime me and my friends play we end up talking about new enemies and bosses we've each defeated and we are always showing eachother cool new gear we got. this game is too damn fun
Honestly I’ve got all the help I need from the online messages people have left. Although I have to say the “hidden wall ahead” and messages like that that turn out to be bullshit are getting so old. It was funny in DS2 & DS3 but it’s gotten so old and annoying. I don’t know why people appraise these messages.
same experience. i remember my friend didnt know where the dectus left half was and without giving him any spoilers i just said "read the item description". it was a very gamer moment. all the boys in discord going hard on elden ring and telling stories is the most fun ive ever had playing a game. 1000/10
@@crplingdepresion4202 hackers can appraise their own messages as many times as they want, so if you see some bs with thousands of appraisals that might be why
I can't tell you how awesome it is to hear a review that FINALLY talks about and appreciates the world and the aesthetics of it! All you see is "what's the best build?" "What's the meta?". Everyone is obsessed with the stats and builds. I'm not saying that part of the game isn't cool as well, it is. But there needs to be way more content like yours that genuinely appreciates how vast and rich the world really is. It sill blows my mind that people have made entire videos talking about how bad the game supposedly looks.
I've been avoiding ER all this time because I don't like super difficult games (and I'm one of those who never played a Souls game.) Your video convinced me I owe it to myself to give it a fair shot and try it out. Thanks for addressing the difficulty and mechanical skill issues in your video as you did.
I genuinely recommend taking a look at the wiki if you're ever stuck, or want a particular upgrade/want to go for a specific build. There's an insane amount of content, which gives you an insane amount of gear, but that means that very little of it will actually have good synergy by the midgame, which makes things difficult
I completed Sekiro before I played any Dark Souls. I played 3 and the worst thing isn't the game play, it's being killed by something and then having to beat two other enemies that are really hard before you get back to the really tough one. It becomes a nightmare.
Oh man, you showed off scythe powerstancing. Easily the best review of the bunch just for that. I thought it'd look weird but it looks deadly and graceful and not at all clunky like I expected. I just hope the other scythe animations are better than in past games.
The fact that respecing is a thing here cures a massive headache for me. I’ve been fussing over what I should try on my first run of the game for weeks now because everything looks so incredibly engaging and fun to use! Now I can actually just try what I want without worrying over screwing my stats. lol
Yeah DS3 had respecing but with a huge barrier to entry. You had to find a hidden npc, then offer them an item that only a few of spawn unless you do invasions, and even then you can only respec 5 times per playthrough
dude same. I want to try magic, but then i see the beautiful greatsword and want to try that, then i see the slick longsword, then i see the stylish scythes. i simply cannot decide edit: I've now decided on a greatsword/faith build. realistically im probably going to change my mind 100 more times before i get a chance to play the game
This is bittersweet to me. The lack of respec was another unique and punishing aspect that I'm sad to see gone. It will be incredible to free try different PVP builds though
4:30 You can even see the fire from the dragon making that rock look burnt and melted. I love how FomSoftware has placed so much attention to detail in their world. It's going to make combat so immersive; I can't wait to try it!
I had never played a Souls game before, all my friends said "I would hate it" as I'm the kinda person that plays everything casually and on easy difficulty. But I kept seeing videos, and in addition to looking cool, it was almost comical how often people died. So I went in with the expectation like I was rewinding a final destination movie, that I would die all the time (as a method to alleviate impending frustration from getting too close and failing). And I had a blast. I mean a genuinely good time. It's not often I can say im glad I didn't listen to my friends. I still haven't beaten it yet, I'm at the Malekith fight (pretty far in) and yeah I'm not bored yet. I also want to now go back and play other fromsoft titles. For anyone out there like me who doesn't like a challenge, I don't know how but this game is for you too. It's immensely accessible and an incredible gateway into the genre.
These games are as challenging as you make them. Just wandering around and leveling up a bunch makes the game much easier than not exceeding level 100/120/150 like a pvp tryhard. And the game gives you plenty of OP tools to use (especially summons). So while parts of the game feel harder than past FromSoft games, they can also be made much easier.
Yes, experiencing how a enemy can crush me with immense tension until my brutal death, is something I don't find in other games At most of the time, I can immerse myself to the pain that felt real weight, which is the work of world building to extreme
So glad you said that. You described your gaming style just as I did. Breath of the wild is my thing and I have played dark souls games before and had to go trade it in because I couldn't play it, it was WAY too hard for me to come close to enjoying. I will try this one based on your comment tho
Update for PC players regarding performance: it’s apparently a very mixed bag on whether you’ll be able to run the game with or without issues. My personal experience was pretty great and reflected as such in the video, but I’ve read about tons of people (even those with powerful rigs) running into issues. It also seems like the day 1 patch made the game somehow run worse for some people than the pre-release review version. Might be a better call to go with the PS5 version for now or wait for upcoming fixes.
No issues with a gaming laptop on medium (Lenovo Legion 5). Played for 9h and only got a few stuttering on specific places where soft loading seems to occure.
I, as Aurelien, am gaming this on a laptop. I'm on an Acer Nitro, and the game runs relatively smoothly on both low and high settings so far, AFTER I got the NVIDIA Graphics update. Before that the game was literally unplayable, I recommend anyone having issues try dowloading and installing this thing before trying or crying about anything else.
Fromsoftware announced very early today they were working on a performance patch as well, so it's an issue they're working on at least. Will probably be resolved within the near future for those worried. Waiting a while to let the dust settle is certainly an option, assuming people still want it on PC.

Without spoiling one of my biggest "oh shit" moments so far was when I went in a random ass building with an elevator and was thinking "boy this elevator sure goes down far" until it opens up into a giant cave with crytals like stars at the ceiling and its like 1-2 hours of content + a cool boss that is completely hidden away.
I was playing with a friend when I got to that part, we were constantly just going "holy shit this goes deep" the entire elevator ride, and were simply dumbfounded and awestruck when we reached the bottom. That area is MASSIVE. GG From Soft, this is your best game yet.
Never played the series, and for the first time I tried it with Elden Ring. And this is one or the best game ever made... I played it 5 times in a row.
“Bro what, how is there a cave here?” And the follow up of “It’s a fucking big cave!” Had me nearly wheezing! I am **SO** pumped to go exploring myself, so thanks for telling me that it’s worth doing!
14:03 really loved hearing this cause its totally true the souls games are allways described as "hardcore" and "you will never beat it" but actually the difficulty is not that high these games just have a learning curve to them i found this out a few months ago when i started playing dsr and now ds3 they just have something you have to learn about them
Yeah honestly Zelda breath of the Wild has the same vibes as a dark souls game mechanically. Your given tools, there is an enemy. Go make it unalive. How you do it doesn't matter, you can cheese it or run up and bare fist brawl it for the next 4 hours. Just have fun, and learn to watch and listen to enemies, react to what they are doing but don't panic. You will win, it's only a question of time. To anyone aiming to get into Dark Souls, it isn't as difficult as everyone says, it can be frustrating yes, but not hard. Even the weakest enemy in Dark Souls can kill you if you don't pay attention or panic, that's not difficulty though. From Soft always gives you a way to fight back. You can win, you will win, and when you do you'll feel a feeling that's hard to find anywhere else. Goodluck tarnished one.
To me a hard game is a mechanically challenging one that requires precision, timing, reaction speed, complex button inputs and so on. Soulsborne games were never that. The proper word to describe them is "unforgiving". You get punished harshly for making mistakes, but everyone's capable of learning from mistakes regardless of mechanical skill. Literally the only thing required to succeed is the strength of will to not give up in frustration, which is directly reflected in the story and themes of Dark Souls series with hollowing. Credit to anyone who picks up these games scared of the difficulty but ends up finding that strength of will, OP included.
Honestly if you're patient and focus on learning timing, they're not particularly difficult. They can be punishing especially if you rush or aren't observant, but the big lesson is to be patient and keep trying, learning along the way. Which is pretty good as lessons go.
This might be the first souls like I'll ever play. This looks amazing. I'm, not a good gamer, not at these games and seeing you talk to people like me saying "well, no, you can do this" is really making me think hard about it IP.
Honestly I recommend picking up ds3 atleast when it's onsal for around 10 bucks. It's actually really fun and the hardest part is just getting used to controls. When I first played I wasn't completely used to the controlls until about the end of the second area which took around 4 hours but now compatible feels hard but not impossible like it did at the beginning
Dark Souls 1 was the first game I played with a controller. It took a bit of time but I managed to finish it, DLC bosses included. I can only encourage you to give it a shot because I believe if I could do it, literally anyone can :)
A bit of advice i can give you is pay attention to enviremental clues. Dark souls was pretty good about giving hints such as corpses before a hard enemy, blood spatter near a trap ect. Seeing whats coming ahead will at the very least keep frustration to a minimum and wont make you fill cheated when yoy didnt see it coming. Good luck and praise the sun.
I´ve returned to your video after way over a year; after nearly 1500 hours in the game, trying Dark Souls 3 in the meantime; to thank you. As you and Vaatividya have been the two people who hooked me to this game. I am still playing it, still trying new things. And just thought to myself, I´ve to adress this to the people, whos experience with this game made me try it and helped me finally find what I´ve been missing in so many games I´ve played over the last 20 years: challenge. And yes, I know, there have been three parts of Dark Souls, but they didn´t intrigue me as much by their trailers, when you did with this video.
Finding random caves that take you into an underground area for over an hour of gameplay is what was missing from Breath of the Wild for me. So I'm pretty hyped about all the random caves I'll find here.
The fact that spells/Miracles seem more viable and engaging makes me happy. I just hope they are more then aim and shoot. I realy wish for a lot of high skill PvP viable spells, to fight against.
@@russian_knight There certainly is you have to have "high skill" to even HIT anyone in pvp with a spell. In the past they have been so easy to dodge, or see coming that poor sorcery builds just cast at nothing, and wait to get backstabbed.
got it preordered too. I hope it wasn't disappointing like Dying Light 2. Got a preorder for that game but it had way too many glitches. If they fixed them, I'd play it again
Bounced off DS2 years ago and got pushed into trying Elden Ring as all my friends were pushing me to give it a go. Thank god they did as I'm obsessed with this game, in my top 10 all time for sure!
I wish this review was an hour long, I love hearing him talk about games, especially ones he's passionate about (like this one). I love the souls series and you are are so damn good at making me want to buy this game - not saying I didn't want to before..
This is the first souls game I’ll be playing while its actually fresh and the meta is being built. I honestly didn’t think I’d make it for this game so I’m sat here with tears in my eyes. It feels like a dream. I’m taking a day or two off to play this masterpiece.
Man, wish more companies would focus their effort on creating amazing games instead of just taking the business route. You need people that are really passionate about the things they do ❤️
@@eclypze_ or they just tried to balance it around it being open world while also making combat more engaging, and overall difficulty wasn't the easiest thing to maintain with that.

@@Chriscs7 yeah, the souls games always have little to no introduction. The big guy is meant to teach you that you can get past enemies without fighting them
I picked up EldenRing two months ago, a long time after release, for the reasons you mentioned in the video (too difficult, never played a souls-like before, etc.), and I just fell in love with it. I'm currently on ng+4, after getting 100% of the achievements and focusing on getting everything discovered, including killing all 165 bosses. PS: I even bought the Book of Knowledge Vol. 1 of the game, which is the first time in my life that I bought something like that.
This video was like a warm hug. Elden Ring has personally reignited my childlike love for video games and you complelty nailed why it does. May we enjoy this beautiful game for years to come!
First time i fought the dragon Agheel, I wasn't confident enough to take him up close as one hit from his fire breath killed me instantly. So in order to beat him I had to run rings around him on Torrent while pelting him with arrows. It was the cheesiest way to beat him but it still felt like the most intense battle ever. Running around at full speed dodging his fire breath as it fills the screen, shooting arrows at his head when I can, all while the intense latin chanting goes on in the background. You know a game is designed well when even a cheap victory feels super epic.
I don't think you have to worry that you used Torrent to cheese the fight, because I think the devs actually intended for you to do this fight that way. Agheel's fire AoE attacks cover a huge area everytime so they are hard to outrun/dodge on foot. BUT if you use Torrent to cover more ground you can not just dodge them but you have enough time to get behind Agheel to get a few easy hits in. I'm just saying this so if anything bothered you about it you can feel better now.
When you break the ballista at 6:12 the fucking bowstring has a physics interaction with the broken bits of wood and pulls one of the shafts that falls off the platform into an arc while it's falling. Truly next level detail.
The sheer amount of stuff there is to find and to do in this game is insane. Just yesterday, I was checking up a sign that appeared in Limgrave after going into the Volcano Manor, got that done, found a tower I hadn't found (after 80+ hours), go to it, find a chest, it takes me to a completely different location. I love this game. I don't want it to end.
What you said at around 15:58 was very useful for me. As someone who has a bad habit of overthinking and stressing about trivial things to the point of causing myself literal anguish, thank you for making that point clear. I can’t wait to get sucked into this game
This game is incredible. I have never played a dark souls game before Elden ring. There was a bit to learn, but was it worth it? I can't stop playing this game now. It's unimaginably big with an entire world to explore. Combat is awesome and is actually like real fighting. The adventure is my favourite thing about it though. Just an amazing journey.
@@noodles4984 nah its a roll simulator...ive only played sekiro that was my first souls like game and that game was great im just expecting elden to be the same combat wise but it wont be cause they focus on 2 different things so ig . In sekiro you had a number of counters . You could vault over enemies, you could deflect every single hit in the game if you were fast enough even big ass bosses . that really stood out to me it raised my adrenaline knowing im going head to head w a giant fucken gorilla w a giant katana lol elden ring makes me feel like im harry potter fighting godzilla ...(Hp could probably kill godzillia idk but you get what i mean right?)
The reason why enemies don't scale is another core design philosophy of Miyazaki and From. You should feel yourself getting stronger with effort and take pride in it. The capra demon was a initial level boss in DS1 but is a regular enemy by the time we reach lost izalith.
I HATE scaling enemies in other games... it's like why did I go through all the trouble of getting the Super Dragon Blade of Soul Reaping or whatever if it's gonna feel the same to play with as the rusty knife I found on the ground at the beginning of the game?
As much as I like the weight of death that comes from being thrown back to a checkpoint or losing currency, I think this change was necessary. I mean, it's a huge open world. Actually really HUGE from what reviews are saying, checkpoints may be very far apart and this could be an issue, it just shows how much they thought of everything when making the game, when you make a radical change to the world, mechanics have to shift and accomodate all that's new.
Also, the stakes are optional to use, so if you want to do the usual run to the boss you can. They really thought about eveything, can't wait to play it this weekend
I always hated the long runs to the boss encounters anyways and never really saw a point in it. thats especially true if you were doing a SL1 run. I remeber doing artorias on SL1 and it took me like 40 tires to kill him and it would take 1 or 2 minutes just to run to the boss area. its not challenging, its not fun, it's just pointless timewaste. glad they got rid of it
@@janedoe186 It's not pointless, it's world building. If there was no running between bosses, you'd just go from fog gate to fog gate, with nothing in between. That cuts out 90% of the game because you get no world, just boss rush.
That’s not really what they’re saying. Obviously exploring areas between bosses is huge part of the fun, but that’s not what they’re talking about. There’s no world building or exploration in running from your bonfire through an area you’ve already explored to get back to a boss over and over. The game isn’t going to be a boss rush, just when you die to a boss you can hop right back into the fight rather than make the same monotonous run back through an area sprinting by every enemy waiting to get back into the fight.
I only just realized that spirit summons are a "replacement" for NPC summons that are way more flexible so FromSoft doesn't need to worry about whether people find the one sign sitting around in some gigantic dungeon.
@@Molimo95 they do, they’re just not sitting outside of literally every boss now. I’ve done 3-4 bosses now and only one had a summon outside the fog wall. To be fair I did not have the ability to summon wolves or anything yet and the boss was a medium scale battle with multiple enemies and 2 bosses at once so it made sense to have said summon to pull some aggro.
Hearing that the game has a respec mechanic is refreshing. Planning out my build in advance is its own kind of fun for me, but I prefer being able to try out everything without feeling like I'm sacrificing character strength.
What I learned: I will like this game! The amout of work that has gone into this game is immense and genuinely astounding. Huge props to all that worked on this work of art. Tomorrow cannot come soon enough!!
@@brunch. not only is that mostly incorrect in this instance, but asset reuse is extrememly commonplace in this industry, and is highly encouraged as it saves the developers time and money they can use elsewhere Don't fix what ain't broke, amirite?

Ive not even actually played any of the souls games and I did this after watching a minute. This seems like something you need to experience yourself lmaoooo
I had the experience of “let me just hit the wall, in case there is something there”, and ended up going on an adventure through an awesome location that took me an entire afternoon and ended with an epic boss fight. I don’t even believe I will be able to get to the end of the game, but I’ll heavily cherish stuff like that.
If you’re talking about the very lava filled area with the godskin apostle, and you think that’s the only boss there just know one of the main 15 remembrance bosses is hidden around that area, good luck exploring ❤️
@@JustAS1nk Yeah, that was Volcano Manor, and the boss was Rykard! I did manage to finish and then platinum the game, thanks to the Blasphemus Sword I got there! Great memories from the game!
Ditto............this game inspires something in my old ass that I thought had died a long time ago. Exploration. I went out of my way to avoid playthroughs and tutorials and all that other shit. I still do, when I get absolutely confused...........and sometimes find out that I won't be getting the solution at all anytime soon. There is some uh....educational study place where a pedestal on "examine" says, "something fits here" I roamed those rat infested beams and destroyed every bookshelf below before doing a search to find out I wasn't going to find that "something" for a very very long time..........through quest lines and areas I still haven't seen. I love this game for that. Speed runners need to shut up. A race to get through a museum the quickest is a bizarre race indeed.
Near the end when you have that little speech about how FromSoft’s games can be beaten with a little patience, reminded me of when my friend handed me a 360 copy of souls 1 and cheered me on every death because I was “Gitting Gud” I honestly would’ve lost interest into difficult single player focused games. I love From’s compassion and detail to making wonderful worlds.
The Git Gud might be frustrating at times. But it really is what it says it is. Git Gud is more then only telling you to become better in the game. It tells you to not give up once you've set a goal, to overcome difficulties you face and to think outside the box. Its a way to encourage you to learn from mistakes and do better. To show the world that you've lost and came back as a better person for it, only to show your opponent what true victory feels like. Go out there friend, GIT GUD! And kick some real ass!
Maybe I'm over thinking things, but this sounds like From Soft's swan song to the genre they single handedly created. It's probably also going to be the most accessible Soulslike game to date, since it seems you can really take your time and fine tune things to fully adjust to your play style. I can't wait to check it out.
When people were saying DS3 was fromsofts swan song to dark souls I thought they'd never make another like it. That alone gives me hope that they'll come back to it in the future sometime. For now though, we have many hours of new content to enjoy :)
It's been such a long time since I played an open world game that made the world feel genuinely fun to explore when I first saw how big the map really gets and how much more there is to see it blew me away. It's all hidden out there to be discovered by me not marked on a map or a checklist making it feel like a chore. It's funny how Fromsoft did open world better on their first try than a company like ubisoft has in years.
i mean even nintendo did one of the greatest open world game of all time without any experience the usual buisnisses dnt try out new stuff that is to risky they just recycle what works
Thats just disingenuous. The world in elden ring is one large field with enemies scattered around. Assassin’s creed odyssey has an open world that’s like 100 times better
Gonna have to call you out here Lunk - Elden Ring may be a massive open world, however it's an empty field of openness. Pick up AC Odyssey or HFW and you'll be far more engaged. If you genuinely like FromSoft games and their battle mechanics that's one thing, but putting that into an open world doesnt make this revolutionary for the industry
true, its disappointing seeing how they butchered the input with delays and the entire PvP system carefully balanced over 3 titles being thrown out the window and gutting replayability in the process.

I played for 14 and I thought the game was gonna be mediocre at first but after playing for a long time and getting immersed in the world I fucking loved it the co-op with different people is so much fun too. After reading some of the replies that sounds terrible I had no idea the pc port was so bad I played on ps5 and had virtually no issues maybe a slight drop every now and then but it was so slight I barely noticed it.

Is this an area you cant go in coop? No, they can just load back into your world once you've crossed. There are a lot of odd limitations and I get it is "classic fromsoft" but come on.
I can think of two things. 1 ) One of the worst PC ports I have ever seen. 2) Locked 60 FPS and TO THIS DAY they cant figure out how make menues etc not garbage for M&K
I can't tell if you're joking. I don't think, once in my life someone has ever seriously described something that sounds nearly perfect. The world design and other stuff like that is just insane to me. I actually want the game now.

@@brunch. your referring to people who truly believe anything can be perfect. That's a minority, majority of people know perfection is impossible, anyone using the term perfect for elden ring is using it as a figure of speech or if they're being serious they're just dumb, more people occupy the first group. Nothing in our universe will ever be perfect. It seems like, for a lot of people, elden ring is as close to perfect for them as a game can get. We're talking about people who's favorite games of all time hands down and still playing those games today is dark souls 1 bloodborne dark souls 3, obviously if elden ring is remotely close to veing an outstanding game objectively then those people will hold that game in their own mind as being much more. For me BB was my start, its my favorite, behind DS3 and sekiro. Elden ring looks like it has lived up to every ounce of hype it had, fromsoft is genius when it comes to managing the hype for their games too bc they drip feed information during development so rarely therefore all people xan do is simply wait months and months for any information, they can't build unrealistic expectations based in dev showcases or in depth detailing of mechanics.
Man, this just puts a big smile on my face. It's so good to hear that all the waiting actually paid off. I did play the Network Test and was already really impressed with that alone but this is just incredible. Can't wait.
One thing I'm loving is the summoning pools. I love helping people out, and with the pools, I can put down a sign for every pool in the region instead of a single bonfire or boss gate, then running across the world to put down one there. The double edge sword to this is that the amount of times I've been summoned to fight the Tree Sentinel with people who were clearly didn't get the memo he's meant for later is insane.
@@homerlol9058 Activating it let's you see and send signs to the pool when you're in the same region. In order to see signs, you need to use a finger remedy thing you can craft with erdflowers or successfully coop.
I always do this to help people first and that way I know that layout of the dungeon lol plus you get runes and still sooome stuff from their world. I love it. Anyone on PS5 want to team up? My group code is "Hippie" lol but lmk and we can dungeon together!
Seeing that the game turned out so good, and not another AAA disappointment, makes me really happy. But i'm also really mad that I have to wait two more weeks for the physical copy I bought to arrive where I live.
I remember the first day playing this game. I was so used to the map of other games "falling off". I looked over a rocky bluff in the first area and thought wow they really animated the unplayable area.... Then I decided to jump off the side... And I didn't die. My jaw hit the floor and I realized the scale of the game. I then began to feel all warm and fuzzy. This is THE game.
You know what else is a masterpiece? Your channel of course. Throughout the years, it seems like your vid’s get better and better. Hope you make more videos throughout the years and that you may praise the sun even more!
I found the best way to explain the difficulty is that it lowers the skill floor while maintaining the skill ceiling. You can start out and level up enough to face a challenge at a level you are comfortable at but at some point you reach diminishing returns while the enemies still remain tough so you have to get better at it. But you can do a lot and go a lot of places within that.
I don’t know how people can actually sit through this game, beat it start to finish and say with a straight face “yeah this games a 10” this is worse than DS2
you forgot something important... NO FETCH QUESTS!! can we just appreaciate that from soft made an amazing game with no filler and A HUGEEE open world, never did I feel that playing this game was a chore, its an adventure, I want to play, discover, fight bosses, learn more about the Lore, its how games were meant to be.
@@alienanxiety Why does every open world game have to have that out dated system? 90% of quests in other games are filler bs that aren't even fun to do. Elden ring proves that you don't need that system and in fact can be better off without it. I'm glad this game exists. It is a testament that passion, hard work and attention to detail pays off. Let this game be a lesson to all these garbage producers who follow trends and focus on micro transaction.
@@Miranox2 Unfortunately I agree with that. Even tho I despise microtransactions, I gotta admit that most consumers are brain dead and just throw money at those companies :/ It's like with everything really, if degeneracy is not dealt with properly, it becomes mainstream.
FromSoft do seem to be extremely confident in this game, considering how much time they've given people with it pre-release and how much they showed it off. I'm glad to hear that even with the hype and high expectations that generates, it sounds like they managed to still surpass those. Fuck, I can't WAIT till friday ....
While it's understandable of a feeling at 60 hours in, I think it might be naive to say that every dungeon feels fresh. I felt similarly at 60 hours, but after 200 hours, I definitely had lost any feeling of novelty for at least the last 50 hours in terms of exploration, especially with all the reused content. I'm not complaining, since that's inevitable for a game of this scale, and the variety of enemies is already excellent for its genre. But there's definitely a caveat to the point about dungeon design and how it feels meaningfully novel at scale
Yeah, I feel like some of the catacombs just feel like a slog to go through, with the final boss just being a reskinned enemy and the reward being a weapon that is worse than the one you're already using
Agree. And what is really annoying is the background music that is constantly playing without any rest. I played 120 hours trying to finish my first playthrough, and my usually thoughts was "Ah, another boss/dragon/tree/catacombs". It was interesting at the beginning, but for now I'm just skipping optional sections to finish this game, free my disk space and be happy that it's finally over. I was happy to return to the previous games, but I don't think I would like to start Elden Ring over. It's just too long and exhausting
Thank you for sharing your passion and love for the souls game! Ive known about souls game a few years now, but I always scared to try them myself, due to their reputation. I stumbled upon your channel a few months back and I said to myself ‘fuck it, I’m gonna give it a shot”. I played DS3 and i never would’ve thought that I would enjoy my time so much with it. I actually finished game today and I’m so excited to play more souls games. Really wanna play Elden Ring now when I can.it looks and sounds amazing !! Thank you for this video and sharing your love!
I often describe my first playthrough of Dark Souls as a religious experience. Absolutely changed what I looked for in a game. Elden Ring is like a revival. It makes past Souls games seem dated somehow.
Beating Elden Ring the first time, it being my first Souls game, was fucking bonkers. I did not know a game could make me feel the things Elden Ring made me feel. My standards have increased for sure lol
while they are "dated" in a few ways (as they naturally should be), what makes Elden Ring feel especially special is how flawlessly they managed to combine everything they've learned from their previous works there are many great game makers, but increasingly few of them manage to consistently build upon what they learn with each release, incorporating traits of everything they do in each consecutive project. From Soft has managed to do that with virtually every game since Demon's Souls, and they've hit "magnum opus" levels with Elden Ring so nuts
I am new to the souls series. I was so frustrated with the combat mechanics early. It took a while to understand how it works, but with a bit of practice, it was so worth it. I am around ~70 hours into the game (about to beat the last boss), and I have never been as engaged or interested in a game like this in so many years :) The best $60 I've spent on a game in years. Get it if you haven't played it, get it and stick with it. There's so much content on youtube if you don't know how to do something!
I honestly now think that Sekiro was a side project for the company, and they've been working on Elden Ring since DS3 or earlier. That's the only way it makes sense how big this game is. It would also mean even FromSofts side projects land in the GOAT.
Having never played any soulsborne game before I came into this game with no expectations, and Jesus this game blew me away, it grabbed my attention so much that I’m now looking into the dark souls games for the first time. Definitely game of the year
I'm so happy you feel this way. The Souls are the only games I've been unable to stop my own hype since Dark Souls 1, and I've been measuring time based on the Elden Ring release since the date has been announced. I'm so excited to play tomorrow :D
It is but afaik it's strictly opt in now, you can no longer invade, which is fine. Soulslike PvP has an issue that makes it very unfriendly to beginners, and the only people who always seem for it are either A: The people who enjoy bullying new players. Or B: The people who think its a trial by fire. I get where both sides are coming from, but ultimately if people don't enjoy the game they're not going to contribute, then you're just killing your ecosystem, and by extension, the life cycle of your game. Practically speaking, if I am remembering right, this would be a step in the right direction.
@@_Hal9000 Hackers are the byproduct of the initial problem. As the ecosystem of a game becomes both hostile and stagnant, people turn to ways to spice it up. I promise you no one bought Dark Souls going "oh boy I can't wait to hack into this game". They were pushed into hacking, maybe they got salty, maybe they got bored, dunno. But they're a byproduct as much as they are a problem.
Something I'm really excited about for this game is the bow rework. I wasn't able to play the network test, but it seems like at least the smaller bows are significantly faster, and you can dodge about and jump while using them. This is really cool, especially since the ranger/Legolas archetype has kinda been lacking in FS games.
Dragon age inquisition had perfect archer. But yeah now I play sorcery or maybe faith I try. But ng+ will propably be shortbow with some two handed weapon. You even have cool weapon arts for bows.
Never played or was interested in "souls-like" games but after watching this video I had to buy the game I will play it to it's entirety. It's not a gushing review but an honest, realistic evaluation of the game. Thank you for this video, I'm looking forward to playing this game!
why can't more teams care about their product man? I need more Elden Ring type passion filled games in my life, all the franchises I loved are either dead or taken hostage by greedy corporate trash trends :'(
Fantastic review, IP. One thing I've noticed is that Elden Ring seems like a love letter to the rest of the entries in the series, which is awesome. So many familiar enemies and set pieces - gonna be nostalgic and novel at the same time haha Can't wait to get my hands on this thing.
It took me 210 hours to beat this game, and I was sure I had done everything I was able to, i.e. beat every boss and find every item that wasn't hidden behind some incredibly cryptic puzzle or secret. I started a new character the very next day and in less than four hours I had fought three new bosses that I had never even seen before. It's insane how big this game is. Edit: I also agree with the point about the graphics. I rarely care much about graphics beyond "that looks good" or "that looks out of place", but they've really nailed it with the color and lighting and post processing and whatnot. I have like 20 000 screenshots of this game and each and every one looks like a painting right out of some of the fanciest illustrated fantasy classics. There's just something about the deep blue shadows, the way torches reflect off of crumbling bricks, and even the silhouettes of backlit objects. And the skies are especially gorgeous. The rolling clouds around Stormveil look so voluminous, and the way the greenish yellow on top contrasts with the azure blue shine from thunderstorms within the clouds themselves is frankly sexy. Edit 2 (because I just love praising this game): Agreed with the catacombs as well. They're interesting because visually they're honestly the weakest parts of the game in how they all look so similar, but they actually take advantage of that with the level design, and I found it super interesting. Every single catacomb has some theme/gimmick that makes the whole place feel like a puzzle, and every time you come to a room you've seen before in another catacomb, you know that they're gonna surprise you with something different and make you think outside the box. Some of my favorites include riding the flamethrower trap pillars as elevators, and that looping catacomb where you think you've returned to the entrance, but then you start noticing small differences and realize that they've placed two identical areas on top of each other to confuse you. Again, it's an odd example because the catacombs reuse graphical assets more than any other areas in the game, but the way you get through them is always so clever and different, and that's usually because of the repetition as opposed to being in spite of it.
I was once playing Bloodborne with a friend, where I had already beat it a bunch of times and he was struggling through the dlc. I managed to get through more than 2/3's of the game in about 2-3 hours and he just said "man I hate it when you play games." The reality is not that I'm some god gamer, I just love the souls series and have played them to death (rimshot), but really anyone can beat the games if they put in enough time, so I'm super excited to hear that Elden Ring is looking like it's going to be more accessible. Can't wait for all the new souls fans to join in on the hype!
I trust you aren't overhyping it, which gives me even more excitement to dive in. As a long time fan of souls I am ready to experience that first playthrough feeling again.
There's your difficulty levels right there. When I want to keep the game difficult, I make sure not to over level Vitality, for instance. Players who want it easier can always grind a little bit. As long as they're having fun
Wasn;t it the case in every souls game? I started with DS3 not so long ago and I always felt like I was overleved(the bosses didnt feel hard) even though I havent really dedicated to farming. The only downside is you might get out of meta level for PvP.
@@nick7072 In most Souls games it wasn't practical to overlevel since grinding for souls is atrocious except in a few specific encounters. I guess DS2 made it the easiest to overlevel but even then it was quite time consuming compared to just progressing normally and learning stuff as you go.

I also completely agree that Skyrims scaling enemies didn't feel that good to play against. I like feeling like I've progressed past points of a game. I don't want a spider in a starting area to be level 60 because it's "scaling" with me.
ikr, it's like what's the point in leveling up if all the enemies take the same amounts of hits to kill anyway lmao
This drives me crazy, why bother with open world if it doesn’t matter what order I approach it because they’ll always be my level. In my opinion Morrowind was the best elder scrolls, even tho by today’s standards it’s a hot mess it really captures that open world vibe.
100% This is my main criticism of most all western RPGs. It breaks immersion and makes character progression meaningless.
More like it's the kind of game where if you take a wrong turn you'll fall to your death. lmao
@@ThwipThwipBoomHalf the time I fell to my death, I found out something new lower down or at the bottom, so both kinda apply
Same it convinced me to pickup dark souls 2
I resisted buying it for ages, because of it's links to the souls series and therefore, likely high difficulty level. But I'm really glad I did eventually buy it. What the game does so well is that it let's you prepare for as long as you like, before you take on the bigger challenges in the game.
I will probably get DS 3 now, thanks to getting hooked on elden ring.
Its the type of game where u take a wrong turn, defeat a whole group of enemies and a mini boss just to get a shitty spell/incantation/mushroom that your never ever going to use. The exploration rewards generally suck in this game.
To be honest, while I was already over the moon after everything I’ve seen of this game, the two words you spoke in this video that made me happiest were ‘re-spec mechanic’.
its definitely a forgiveness but hey we all need one or two. In fact just a once or twice option would be fine for me.

FromSoft definitely listened to our feedback.
I love how there are random teleporter traps getting you to far away zones where you are completely underleveled. Trying to poke around and snatching some high level rare items is so satisfying.

Yeah dude I’m 125 hours in, no fast traveling (for the most part), and I have the entire top half of the map to explore

Dang I didn't notice that... Quite amazing to say the least
Pretty cool, think that might be the burnt ground effect rolling over the rock, but it still looks sick.
I remember seeing footage of the network test where the stream of flames split apart on a rock, cant wait to see the cool new spell effects.
Did you ever get to fight Malenia or Dragonlord Placidusax? If you haven't now's probably a good time as the dlc was just announced
I highly recommend Bloodborne. That is FromSoft's true masterpiece and the successor to Castlevenia.
Yes, experiencing how a enemy can crush me with immense tension until my brutal death, is something I don't find in other games
At most of the time, I can immerse myself to the pain that felt real weight,
which is the work of world building to extreme
Xbox Series Version has been running great for those with a series s or x, couldn't recommend it enough.
I have zero issues on normal HD or 720p on pc, the issues arise at any higher resolution

The games have always been pretty easy imo
This is the key, especially for Sekiro. And when you beat that boss, you feel a badass for the next few days.
Just do it and power through it. It's very rewarding to beat bosses and everything you overcome. Let us know if you do!
my first was Sekiro, it took quite a long time to get into, but once you are in, it is really good, im expecting the same experience for elden ring

Think it’s ruined it for me, no game feels as good as it used to after Elden ring anymore 😂
For the longest time, I came to accept that maybe I'm just too old to really get excited for a massive open world games, then came Elden Ring.
Wow a moment that's happened in every souls like game happened to you congrats.
O think all dragons should be fought on Torrents back. Its cooler and a Lot less frustranting

The reason why enemies don't scale is another core design philosophy of Miyazaki and From. You should feel yourself getting stronger with effort and take pride in it. The capra demon was a initial level boss in DS1 but is a regular enemy by the time we reach lost izalith.
I think scaling wouldn't be good here anyway due to most fights being so technical.
I HATE scaling enemies in other games... it's like why did I go through all the trouble of getting the Super Dragon Blade of Soul Reaping or whatever if it's gonna feel the same to play with as the rusty knife I found on the ground at the beginning of the game?
Yeah it's always annoying when you have armor and magic and rats are difficult to kill
@@sairentoeko biss runbacks are different than that
That’s not really what they’re saying.
Some of the other reviews show them having npc summons with their own spirits.
"Sword Master", you will be missed. :(
Skillup said in his review that NPC summons still exist.
@@Molimo95 they do, they’re just not sitting outside of literally every boss now. I’ve done 3-4 bosses now and only one had a summon outside the fog wall. "the worst thing about this game is that going back to other games will be dissappointing" is such an insane statement that i agree with

I found the best way to explain the difficulty is that it lowers the skill floor while maintaining the skill ceiling. But you can do a lot and go a lot of places within that.

I can't even return to dark souls 3 without thinking " Man, I realy wish to find by accident, the siofra river, again"
Because they are dated now lol even elden ring looks n plays out dated
while they are "dated" in a few ways (as they naturally should be), what makes Elden Ring feel especially special is how flawlessly they managed to combine everything they've learned from their previous works
there are many great game makers, but increasingly few of them manage to consistently build upon what they learn with each release, incorporating traits of everything they do in each consecutive project. From Soft has managed to do that with virtually every game since Demon's Souls, and they've hit "magnum opus" levels with Elden Ring

I get where both sides are coming from, but ultimately if people don't enjoy the game they're not going to contribute, then you're just killing your ecosystem, and by extension, the life cycle of your game. Can't wait to get my hands on this thing.
