Stealin a page from kaiser and lani said a few episodes ago but also from MistareFusions Dragonball dissection series, but i feel apart of the reason it also works is because on some level goku kinda drastically fucked(and to some, ruined) the tension and pacing of the story due to how little it felt like he actually belonged in it due to a lack of real motivation or organic relationship with the people he was actually fighting TFS obviously punched it up with comedy and snappy dialogue but you can literally see this in action in the OG series by how quickly he just dispatches of all of the ginyus after half the cast was left shitting themselves over just reccoome Everything was so non-personal to goku that it could be annoying at worst and insanely funny at best The jokes sorta wrote themselves The arc definitely paid for it in a mostly negative fashion, but one of its obvious graces was this finally coming to a head with freeza Goku went from having 0 to do with freeza, to freeza pushing him so far that goku being there had EVERYTHING to do with freeza and it just cathartically shits down on him like a ton of bricks With genuinely good thematic writing like that in the actual series (done intentionally and unintentionally); it definitely made the job easier when the time came for tfs to handle freeza and goku’s dynamic.
For the freeza and Goku interaction, I think the line that really catch the feeling is “Will you piss off already?” “I don’t have to use the bathroom!”

I've always loved Frieza's inability to process Goku. It's like, he has this idea of what power is: ruthless, intelligent, and elegant. And then Goku comes along with absolutely none of those things and starts kicking his ass.
Let’s be real. Goku was getting wrecked the whole time and he got plot advantage with the super sayian transformation. In fact, there’s no reason why Frieza couldn’t have just killed him from the start and called it a day besides the plot basically.
I wonder if Freeza has kept a tally on the number of times Vegeta has made the Super Saiyan Speech. Also, in HFIL, I'm hoping Cell or someone else tells Freeza "Imma deck you in the schnoz" and Freeza's retort is to smack them down and viciously say "Two".

I just realized Freeza is one LKs smoothest silkiest voices he's ever done, I was so use to him doing rugged powerful voices all the way back then that I didn't realize it was him doing the voice.
Goku's conversations with Freiza will always be so memorable to me. "I'm insane! From Earth!" Vegeta's "You're not dealing with the average Saiyan warrior anymore" line is so iconic I still use it.
i always felt that showing frieza's thought process while vegeta is attacking, and that he's not even thinking about the fight, was such a great way to show the power difference between them.
The MMO reference is one of my favorite moments because in that specific moment Vegeta, Krillin and Gohan are on the same wavelength of not just silliness, but terror.
Fun fact: The Italian Adaptation of the Dragon Ball Z Dub calls him Freezer instead of Frieza, so basically now an entire generation knows him as Freezer.

Starting at 11:00 starts what may well the single funniest minute in all of your work. Just a nonstop barrage of laugh-out-loud moments "Hey Dad!" "hey" "Freezer guy" "Imma deck you in the schnoz" "I'm Goku, im insane, from Earth" "I'm impressed Vegeta, you managed to make a friend" "Hate you. Hate you both" "Why do you wanna die? Is it because you look weird?" Pure perfection.
So at 4:40. I pulled out my old Youmacon 2010 guidebook and on the scheduler at the time of the TFS Q&A at 3-5 pm on Saturday there was also a Q&A for someone else at 4-5pm Brad Swaile. TFS had the big Mackinac Ballroom while he was only in the smaller Marquette room. This of course was 12 years ago so now he most likely knows of TFS AND that size room he used for his Q&A was where TFS did the surprise MST4K riff of Dragonball Evolution. So it's not like it was a tiny room.

This episode and the one immediately following it are two of my favorites. Even moreso than in the original, Goku is the PERFECT karmic retribution against Freeza. It's like a little piece of Freeza's personal hell just showed up out of nowhere and turned his entire world upside-down. Every bit as dramatically fitting as it is hilarious.
So, this episode... was what actually got me into DBZA. Several of my cousins were visiting my (now deceased) aunt's house, and my youngest was watching this very episode on his iPhone. When Vegeta said "I don't wanna smack you with my dick", and "Bitch, you just jealous of muh Super Saiyan swagger", we were both rolling with laughter. So, I subscribed myself, and joined the bandwagon with the advent of Season 3.
That's how I got into it too! My friend in middle school just kept saying "bitch you're just jealous of my super saiyan swagger" and then he showed me this episode, and I've been hooked ever since!
Considering *KRILLIN* caught Frieza's second form off guard enough to sever his tail, he could have definitely done it! Thing is, King Cold exists canonically... and then Cooler off-canon. So like, bigger fish. Related to the big fish you bagged... quite possibly able to get back on you for it. Not that I'm not very partial and fond of Ginyu's loyalty. They even keep that in the Ressurection of F saga, all the way on Super. Frieza is amused, kinda happy to have Ginyu back - and Ginyu is immediately loyally by him, in spite of multiple warriors way above super saiyan level being there, opposing him.
"B*tch you just jealous of my Super Saiyan swagger" is probably my favorite line in this whole arc. Edit: Also, another maybe intentional layer to the Freeza and Freezer line: At least in the latin american and european spanish dubs, Freeza's name was actually translated as Freezer. So yeah, it makes sense that Goku would have understood his name as such.
It's so interesting to learn that Yamcha getting skipped was due to the lack of a voice actor. I always thought they were simply making a statement / joke about how even the actual show always dunks on him
I thought "Super Saiyan. What even is that?" was a joke about how Vegeta just started randomly ranting about super saiyan a dozen times in this original run of the freiza arc when nobody asked. I imagine fans in the 90s might have been a bit confused with that.
haha, the mention of masako's intrusive R is funny to me. Also, freezer is actually his name in certain dubs too, so it's a trifold joke. Also, I saw the scorpions this summer. Pretty huge band xD

Lots of country/rock music from the 80s and 90s (I was born in 85). Scorpions was a band I knew pretty well but nobody in school had any idea who the hell I was talking about when I brought them up. So that rock joke always gets a dumb smile from me
The bit about who sung “Rock you like a hurricane” was killing me. I felt like Carl from ATHF gesticulating wildly about the German super group and rattling off all their kick ass songs.
8:30 Actually showed that bit to some of my relatives (who are Jamaican). They were surprised how somewhat authentic that accent was. Better than Numbuh One Love, anyway.
There's also an unexpected layer to the Freezer joke, at least for the latin american audience. Unlike 4kids anime that were dubbed to spanish from the american censored english versions, anime like Dragon Ball were dubbed directly from the original versions. That's why in spanish we got all the original music (like Cha-la-head-cha-la) just dubbed in spanish and so are most of the names and terms. Piccolo in the dub is named "Piccoro" like how its pronounced in japanese, so is the way Goku's name is pronounced, the same way Kaiser says it (Go-Kú) and they used terms like "Namekusei" (instead of Namekians) and "Saiayin" (instead of Sayan). So Frieza is literally called "Freezer" in the latin american dub (even spelled as such in spanish episode titles).
Wait you guys too ?! The french dub had the same thing, some name were changed, some keeped and the dialogues... It depends on which anime we are talking about. Some mistake/changes they made was reversed back to what it was supposed to be later on but not all of it, for example : Saiyans (not super, base Saiyans) were called super warriors from space if I have to translate literally. Back then we didn't have a specific channel for anime so when they brought back home some anime, they dub how they can and kinda treated it like cartoons, they never expected it to work that well so dubs wasn't the best but good enough.
@@Avarith Most latin american spanish dubs didn't have that much budget to do any kind of editing (or censoring), so they would mostly just dub the original directly. As far as I remember only 4kids stuff was the one that would be a dub of the american versions, the rest of the stuff would just be translated without much changes including the music (which would either just be played in japanese or just have dubbed lyrics). Like Card Captor Sakura that was dubbed completely faithfully including all its LGBT+ themes and relationships, while the english version was super censored and changed. Same with Ghost Stories which was translated faithfully. Growing up I was shocked that in english so many of the english dubs were straight up censored/edited versions of their shows, cutting plot points, characters and original music. In the case of Dragon Ball, fortunately the dub cast has stayed pretty involved in almost all the projects all the way to Super Hero. Hell, there was even an online movement to get Mario Castañeda (the actor that plays teen and adult Goku in the dub) to be the dub actor for Justin Chatwin in DB: Evolution, which succeeded. Most of the names and terms have been kept to this day "saiyajin" is still used instead of Sayan for all variations of the form, etc. The only weird thing is that the dub stuck with "Bills" instead of Beerus, don't really know why.

The only censor we mostly have was in the dialogue, so seeing Fist of the north star fully uncencored with kid friendly dialogue was definitely something I wasn't expecting (some problem came with it later for the violence, etc.. but I don't remember the full story) I still remember freeza stabbing krillin with his horns, god this scene it lasted forever for me. I can't remember for all our dubs but I think they barely, if not any, japanese in character/special attack names A example would be captain tsubasa, the only thing that they keeped was the schools name, everything else was changed/translate. But with all said and done, if those dubs never happened, things would have been a lot different for everyone.
@@Avarith - About 90% of the European dubs were based on the French one, that aired on good ol' *Club Dorothée* ... so most of the blunders that the originals dubbers made were translated into a bunch of other languages. I think the only European dub of DBZ that wasn't based on the French one was the German one. That's also the reason all those dubs had a slightly higher pitched musics, because of the NTSC to PAL conversation, that the original French dub half-assed because they figured it was just some dumb show for kids and no one would notice.

My initial thoughts on why Yamcha didn't have any lines is because King Kai said "No one cares what Yamcha thinks" and you just kept on with it into the next episode. Still, even with the proper reason known, it still works.
I recently watched the entire DBZA series not too long ago and I really noticed and appreciated the level of continuity you guys brought. Also, the running jokes poking fun at the community all while praising the series. You guys level of commitment, work and attention to detail/nuance is incredible.
I've always thought your comedic timing got better and better as you went on, and frieza and goku have some of the best timing of any dialogue you guys ever wrote. Friezas confusion at nearly everything goku says is so perfect
“I feel like we’ve been here before, have we been here before?” Love the surprise and/or confusion in that line…same with “and apparently…this is now happening”

STOP BEING STUPID!!!" Goku - "Or... maybe I'm just being rhetorical." Freeza - "NO! NO YOU'RE NOT! God, it's like you just repeat words you hear randomly in order to sound smarter!" Goku - "well now you're just acting transcendent!"

Which makes it really neat when it gets called back to in a few episodes.

i always felt that showing frieza's thought process while vegeta is attacking, and that he's not even thinking about the fight, was such a great way to show the power difference between them.
The MMO reference is one of my favorite moments because in that specific moment Vegeta, Krillin and Gohan are on the same wavelength of not just silliness, but terror.
Fun fact: The Italian Adaptation of the Dragon Ball Z Dub calls him Freezer instead of Frieza, so basically now an entire generation knows him as Freezer.

So at 4:40. I pulled out my old Youmacon 2010 guidebook and on the scheduler at the time of the TFS Q&A at 3-5 pm on Saturday there was also a Q&A for someone else at 4-5pm Brad Swaile. TFS had the big Mackinac Ballroom while he was only in the smaller Marquette room.
This of course was 12 years ago so now he most likely knows of TFS AND that size room he used for his Q&A was where TFS did the surprise MST4K riff of Dragonball Evolution. So it's not like it was a tiny room.

11:20 Man, I just love this line, because it's the start of Goku Crackin freeza's confidence. Freeza feels like he is in control the whole time, but then Goku appears out of the blue and says something that completely throws him off. I love it.
While at the same time actually hurting Freeza. Just the cherry on top of that

This episode and the one immediately following it are two of my favorites. Even moreso than in the original, Goku is the PERFECT karmic retribution against Freeza. It's like a little piece of Freeza's personal hell just showed up out of nowhere and turned his entire world upside-down. Every bit as dramatically fitting as it is hilarious.
So, this episode... was what actually got me into DBZA.
Several of my cousins were visiting my (now deceased) aunt's house, and my youngest was watching this very episode on his iPhone. When Vegeta said "I don't wanna smack you with my dick", and "Bitch, you just jealous of muh Super Saiyan swagger", we were both rolling with laughter. So, I subscribed myself, and joined the bandwagon with the advent of Season 3.
It’s funny, the next coming episode 28 is what got me into DBZA too.
That's how I got into it too! My friend in middle school just kept saying "bitch you're just jealous of my super saiyan swagger" and then he showed me this episode, and I've been hooked ever since!

They even keep that in the Ressurection of F saga, all the way on Super. Frieza is amused, kinda happy to have Ginyu back - and Ginyu is immediately loyally by him, in spite of multiple warriors way above super saiyan level being there, opposing him.
Or maybe he knew Freeza's Will save was too high for it to have a reasonable chance of success.

Edit: Also, another maybe intentional layer to the Freeza and Freezer line: At least in the latin american and european spanish dubs, Freeza's name was actually translated as Freezer. So yeah, it makes sense that Goku would have understood his name as such.

It's so interesting to learn that Yamcha getting skipped was due to the lack of a voice actor. I always thought they were simply making a statement / joke about how even the actual show always dunks on him
I thought "Super Saiyan. What even is that?" was a joke about how Vegeta just started randomly ranting about super saiyan a dozen times in this original run of the freiza arc when nobody asked. I imagine fans in the 90s might have been a bit confused with that.
Vegeta explains what it is (to himself) when Goku beats Recoome. And Nappa references it when they learn about the DragonBalls.

That Scorpions bit at the end got a chuckle out of me. Growing up I didn't really start listening to my own music until the end of middleschool. So I grew up with my mom's music. Lots of country/rock music from the 80s and 90s (I was born in 85). Scorpions was a band I knew pretty well but nobody in school had any idea who the hell I was talking about when I brought them up. So that rock joke always gets a dumb smile from me
The bit about who sung “Rock you like a hurricane” was killing me. I felt like Carl from ATHF gesticulating wildly about the German super group and rattling off all their kick ass songs.

There's also an unexpected layer to the Freezer joke, at least for the latin american audience. Unlike 4kids anime that were dubbed to spanish from the american censored english versions, anime like Dragon Ball were dubbed directly from the original versions. That's why in spanish we got all the original music (like Cha-la-head-cha-la) just dubbed in spanish and so are most of the names and terms. Piccolo in the dub is named "Piccoro" like how its pronounced in japanese, so is the way Goku's name is pronounced, the same way Kaiser says it (Go-Kú) and they used terms like "Namekusei" (instead of Namekians) and "Saiayin" (instead of Sayan). So Frieza is literally called "Freezer" in the latin american dub (even spelled as such in spanish episode titles).

The french dub had the same thing, some name were changed, some keeped and the dialogues... It depends on which anime we are talking about. Some mistake/changes they made was reversed back to what it was supposed to be later on but not all of it, for example : Saiyans (not super, base Saiyans) were called super warriors from space if I have to translate literally.
Back then we didn't have a specific channel for anime so when they brought back home some anime, they dub how they can and kinda treated it like cartoons, they never expected it to work that well so dubs wasn't the best but good enough.

All attack names keep their Japan designated names for the most part too.
@@Avarith Most latin american spanish dubs didn't have that much budget to do any kind of editing (or censoring), so they would mostly just dub the original directly. As far as I remember only 4kids stuff was the one that would be a dub of the american versions, the rest of the stuff would just be translated without much changes including the music (which would either just be played in japanese or just have dubbed lyrics). Like Card Captor Sakura that was dubbed completely faithfully including all its LGBT+ themes and relationships, while the english version was super censored and changed. Same with Ghost Stories which was translated faithfully. Growing up I was shocked that in english so many of the english dubs were straight up censored/edited versions of their shows, cutting plot points, characters and original music.
In the case of Dragon Ball, fortunately the dub cast has stayed pretty involved in almost all the projects all the way to Super Hero. Hell, there was even an online movement to get Mario Castañeda (the actor that plays teen and adult Goku in the dub) to be the dub actor for Justin Chatwin in DB: Evolution, which succeeded. Most of the names and terms have been kept to this day "saiyajin" is still used instead of Sayan for all variations of the form, etc. The only weird thing is that the dub stuck with "Bills" instead of Beerus, don't really know why.

The only censor we mostly have was in the dialogue, so seeing Fist of the north star fully uncencored with kid friendly dialogue was definitely something I wasn't expecting (some problem came with it later for the violence, etc.. but I don't remember the full story) I still remember freeza stabbing krillin with his horns, god this scene it lasted forever for me.
I can't remember for all our dubs but I think they barely, if not any, japanese in character/special attack names
A example would be captain tsubasa, the only thing that they keeped was the schools name, everything else was changed/translate.
But with all said and done, if those dubs never happened, things would have been a lot different for everyone.
@@Avarith - About 90% of the European dubs were based on the French one, that aired on good ol' *Club Dorothée* ... so most of the blunders that the originals dubbers made were translated into a bunch of other languages.
I think the only European dub of DBZ that wasn't based on the French one was the German one.
That's also the reason all those dubs had a slightly higher pitched musics, because of the NTSC to PAL conversation, that the original French dub half-assed because they figured it was just some dumb show for kids and no one would notice.

My initial thoughts on why Yamcha didn't have any lines is because King Kai said "No one cares what Yamcha thinks" and you just kept on with it into the next episode. Still, even with the proper reason known, it still works.
I recently watched the entire DBZA series not too long ago and I really noticed and appreciated the level of continuity you guys brought. Also, the running jokes poking fun at the community all while praising the series. You guys level of commitment, work and attention to detail/nuance is incredible.
I've always thought your comedic timing got better and better as you went on, and frieza and goku have some of the best timing of any dialogue you guys ever wrote. Friezas confusion at nearly everything goku says is so perfect
Realistically, it probably should have been Krillin with the "Out of Mana" line, since he used up all his energy mortally wounding Vegeta.
The "Need a rest" line would work well for piccolo since he just got his ass handed to him on a silver platter.
