Yeah I've always hated it in shows where voices swap with bodies. I like it better when either the voice actor stays with the body or has to do their best impression of the other character. Farscape did the best body swap episode ever, when it comes to actors playing each other's characters. Out Of Their Minds is still screamingly hilarious, all these years later.
I didn't know someone else had mentioned it in the comments! It really is the best example of this trope I can personally think of, and I've seen a fair few of them.
@@dvdkolk Truth. Probably the best sci-fi series ever made when it comes to sheer depth and breadth of character development and evolution. Not a single one of the protagonists (or the primary antagonists, for that matter) are anywhere near the same person at the end of Season 4 that they were in Season 1. And all those changes are *earned*.
14:43 Another fantastic example of a well-executed body swap comes from Star Trek Prodigy. There's an episode where Dal R'El and Vice Admiral Janeway swap consciousness, and both Brett Gray and Kate Mulgrew are absolutely brilliant.
After this episode there was a week that was cloudy throughout where I lived, on the first sunny morning I woke up and yelled "Oh God, natural light!" from my room with the same delivery as Guru, and my mother lost her shit. She would quote that occasionally ever since.
11:46 Every Namekian shown not named Piccolo is the son of Guru. There was a mistake earlier in abridged saying that Dende was Mooris son, which is not true

I've the episodes and specials so many times, but this gives me a brand new look at all these episodes I grew up with. I actually have been stopping myself from going back and watching the episodes ahead of the commentary bc I just want to experience them again with the commentary
Rodger from American Dad is the perfect example of the character “body switch” voice thing. Seth Macfarlane was once voiced Rodger doing an impression of Stan and he nails it.
14:40 there is a trope called "Voices Are Mental" that actually address this and it seems that its mostly of a lack of talent or range from the voice actors. In almost any time there is a body swap, the characters never keep their voices, they trade them and its because the actors dont know how to play other characters than the one they are already doing(and if they do and tried it may have come out wrong).
I also like it when shows maintain the voices of the bodies when characters swap bodies. It becomes jarring when they don't. Even more so when they do it for one swap pair and don't do it for another, even when it happens in the same episode. For example the episode 'A change of face' in the original Ben 10 series. Gwen and Charmcaster swap bodies and their voices stay consistent. However later in the episode, Gwen (back in her original body) and Ben swap bodies but the voices are not consistent. Meaning that you hear Bens voice coming out of Gwens body and visa versa.
so... 14:44 it's the trope "voices are mental" and it's more for mitigating audience confusion as to what happened. The implication is that the other characters are hearing the voices as they normally are, while we're hearing the swapped voices, and it's more to remind us that "these characters have traded faces." Considering a lot of body swap plots tend to be multi episode affairs, if there's a gap between episodes, it could serve to be an instant reminder as to what has happened,
Fun Fact: Ginyu's power level is 120,000, and Vegeta's power level in his Great Ape form was 180,000, which means Vegeta was stronger than Ginyu before he lost his tail.

I am SO thankful you guys opted for the having the original actors actually do an impression of whomever is in their body. It always bums me out when body swap shows just swap voices. Like I know some people say they do it to make sense for kids, but even adult animated shows like Futurama and Inside Job did body swap episodes that just swapped the voices. I always think of you guys when I think of a genuinely great instance of a body swap episode because of how well you handled this. It's like...this, when Lex Luthor and Flash changed bodies, and I think I remember JoJo Part 5 doing it pretty well.
11:38 If I remember correctly, every living Namekian besides Piccolo and Kami was Guru's child, when that cataclysm hit Namek only Guru survived, he repopulated the planet by himself.
It's so awesome looking back on how much literally everything in the series improved in the span of around 10 episodes, from episode 11 up to 22. DBZ Abridged really did go from being another abridged series in its first few episodes, albeit a very good and high quality one compared to most others at the time, to really being its own beast entirely once the Namek Saga had begun.
what these guys did with DBZ abridged will go down in history. these men made my love for Dragon Ball grow further. I disagree with Sean Schemmel's statements about them but again to each their own.
A thought that just came to mind. Lani said "good on the scouters for not breaking" when Goku powered up. When the Ginyu force landed on Namek and gave Frieza his new scouter, they mentioned they were the new up-to-date scouters. Assumedly, being up-to-date means better tracking of power levels and greater resistance to breaking while analyzing. Later Frieza mentions that it's been a long while since he's transformed and last time he clocked his second form the power level was 1 million. How?! How did they even analyze that when before this scouters broke long before reaching 100k?!
Ik this comment is a year old but 1. Freeza estimates his power level is probably over 1 million, he actually isn't saying that as a matter of fact and 2. Scouters are just little mobile devices, certainly stronger stationary power reading stations existed before. They appear in anime filler
11:40 If my memory is correct Guru birthed all the namekians that appeared in the Namek saga in DBZ considering that namekians reproduce Asexually through eggs.
Words cannot express how happy I was that you didn’t swap Goku and Ginyu’s voices with their bodies. And it got even funnier to me when I found out Masako’s Ginyu voice is closer to his real voice than Goku.
I'm with Lani. One of my least favourite tropes is when shows do a body swap plot but the voices change, so I was thrilled to hear Antfish play Goku and Masako play Ginyu in the coming episode; it's great to let these actors flex their skills and try their hand at playing a different character.
By far my favorite interaction is Guru: oh god. Natural liiiiiight. Frieza: good lord I was on the assumption that your people survived on water and sunlight. HOW IS HE SO FAT?! Guru: oh hello. I'm super kami guru. And not the guy judging you based on your appearance.
I just want to point out that I got a Jimmy John’s commercial during this episode and the voiceover sounded JUST like the Spacey’s commercials. My first thought was “I don’t remember another Namekamania commercial.” I have been corrupted and I love it.
11:37 I'm pretty sure all Namekians on Planet Namek during the Namek Arc were Guru's children, since he was the only survivor of the disaster that occured in the past - I believe Dende states Guru gave birth to all other Namekians that are alive now. Dende even specifies he's Guru's 108th child. (We can assume either he or Cargo were prolly the youngest?) Of course, after the Namek Arc, any younger Namekians that appear would likely be Muri's children, since he becomes the bew Grand Elder.
I never knew the episodes had names until they brought up the crab metal song possibly being in the description and then going to the description of ep 22 and seeing it for the first time! This episode is called… “The Good, The bad, and the purple”

1- he somehow was apparently unaware that most cartoons also swap voices.
2- Also because a lot of the jokes had them trying to pass as each other the script basically said something like "Sonic: [in Eggman's body pretending to be Sonic]" so Roger & Mike would sometimes get confused as to who actually had to say which line
That Vegeta "interesting" line is something I still quote to this day. Also I was a fan of the whole voice thing too
8:31 - Ngl, Kaiser, I actually love that line too. It really shows how diabolical Frieza is here.
I’m disappointed they didn’t mention anything about how Dende becomes much more openly snarky and cocky after the power up, implying that guru unleashed his smartass potential as well as his healing powers. Must have been unintentional but they should have taken credit for it.
Up you go!
We're all proud of you, Kaiser!
If there’s anything I want more than life, is them explaining how “Team Fortress 2” sound effects made their way into the edit. Obviously not what sold me on the final project but GOD do I love hearing them!!!
The Blackest void joke will always be my favorite joke in the series
Lani: "Goku is now Ginyu, Ginyu is now Goku, and--"
Viva Reverie: "NARANCIA IS TRISH!!!"
7:15
"More familiar with the footage than anybody" while talking about Freeza's boots. Don't think you snuck that one past me Lani
13:13 I love how casually Goku and Jeice spoke together, it is just so good.
14:44 - The anime for Jojo did that in Part 5, and both the sub and dub pulled it off really well. Especially Mista and Trish in the dub.
@Skeleton Nick Also, "Where'd you go, little guy?!"
Sean Chiplock really went hard to sell Mista in Trish’s body, and boy did he succeed
9:55 I love how Nail just sounds so done with that day
I love how even the creators recite the lines while watching like most the comments do on the vids XD they’re fans of their own work
honestly these are really making me look forward to Wednesday and Saturday. cant wait for more!
2 a week! 2 a week!
The voices never switching when body swaps happened always annoyed the hell outta me too!!!
So glad you guys did what you did, and the performances were fantastic!
~_~
Lanipator: Good on the scouters for not exploding.
KaiserNeko: they're the new brand.
Lanipator: ... HUH
That “NAAAAAAIL” at 9:12-9:20 always murders me
9:50 That might be the proudest Guru's ever been of Nail
Farscape did the best body swap episode ever, when it comes to actors playing each other's characters. Out Of Their Minds is still screamingly hilarious, all these years later.
That was the first thing I thought of when they started talking about it.
I didn't know someone else had mentioned it in the comments! It really is the best example of this trope I can personally think of, and I've seen a fair few of them.
@@theimaginatrix7625 farscape is great in general
@@dvdkolk Truth. Probably the best sci-fi series ever made when it comes to sheer depth and breadth of character development and evolution.
Not a single one of the protagonists (or the primary antagonists, for that matter) are anywhere near the same person at the end of Season 4 that they were in Season 1. And all those changes are *earned*.
The picture cards they hang around their necks so the characters themselves can keep track of who's who.
This honestly is the best part of my week. Opening TH-cam and finding a new commentary video. Thank you TFS for all you guys do.
I loved the line "Oh but you see, I did do it to you!" I loved the splice edit at the end. It made the body change more ominous.
"and you're purple" got a lol outta me. good stuff
My favorite bit is when the ginyu force shows up on king Kai’s planet and guldos best insult to king Kai is “you’re blue!”
Goku punching Jeice again and Ginyu goin “Jeice..what have i told you?” Fuckin KILLS me every time hahahahaaaa!!
Guldo is truly the Raditz of the Ginyu Force.
11:46 Every Namekian shown not named Piccolo is the son of Guru. There was a mistake earlier in abridged saying that Dende was Mooris son, which is not true
I love the fact that guru praises nail for being a sarcastic asshole
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I absolutely love this series, watching new episodes are some of the highlights of my week. Its so fun to go through the series getting the creator commentary. I started watching this series back in middle school and now I'm going onto my final year of college, so DBZA has been a big part of my life.
Ginu: "Did he at least die with dignity?"
Jeice: "Face down, ass up captain."
Antfish and Masako did such an unbelievable great job with their voicework.
this show is the best implimentation of creator commentary i've ever seen. its actually enjoyable!
Meaning that you hear Bens voice coming out of Gwens body and visa versa.
so... 14:44
it's the trope "voices are mental" and it's more for mitigating audience confusion as to what happened.
The implication is that the other characters are hearing the voices as they normally are, while we're hearing the swapped voices, and it's more to remind us that "these characters have traded faces."
Considering a lot of body swap plots tend to be multi episode affairs, if there's a gap between episodes, it could serve to be an instant reminder as to what has happened,
the song that plays for Bulma while she's fighting the giant crab, is called Crabplosion by Skylliton and is still up on Iturns and Amazon!
Fun Fact: Ginyu's power level is 120,000, and Vegeta's power level in his Great Ape form was 180,000, which means Vegeta was stronger than Ginyu before he lost his tail.
I imagine that it would be like buff super sayain trunks fighting cell. Much stronger but too slow to hit anything.
@@nicolasachille4371I mean great ape was usually fast enough to kill most aliens, not to mention fast enough to catch and crush Goku, so it could go either way.
@@nicolasachille4371 Ozaru explicitly doesn't have a speed penalty. Neither does Piccolo's gigantification for that matter. Their speed scaling consistently is explicitly pointed out for both
I am SO thankful you guys opted for the having the original actors actually do an impression of whomever is in their body.
Frieza saying "Classy" was SUCH a complement. Frieza was ACTUALLY impressed! 🤣🤣😂😂
"Naaaaail... don't take his coat", still love that line. Needs to be on a T-Shirt or something.
what these guys did with DBZ abridged will go down in history. these men made my love for Dragon Ball grow further.
It makes me so happy to quote along with their favourite lines too
7:17 The *foot-age?*
I'll leave now
Nappa: "I get it!"
Seeing you guys doing this thing that you're doing brings me great joy. Thanks!
4:06, that's not what vanity is, Nick. Vanity is taking excessive pride in yourself, not others.
I'm with Lani. One of my least favourite tropes is when shows do a body swap plot but the voices change, so I was thrilled to hear Antfish play Goku and Masako play Ginyu in the coming episode; it's great to let these actors flex their skills and try their hand at playing a different character.
10:00 I actually dialed that number when I was younger, out of curiosity.
...I don't know what I was expecting.
Absolutely love that the only time guru is nice to nail is when he says “have you tried working the shaft” 😭
By far my favorite interaction is
Guru: oh god.
My first thought was “I don’t remember another Namekamania commercial.”
I have been corrupted and I love it.
(We can assume either he or Cargo were prolly the youngest?)
Of course, after the Namek Arc, any younger Namekians that appear would likely be Muri's children, since he becomes the bew Grand Elder.
As a massive man of dbzabriged I'm loving seeing the creators talk about the show!
I never knew the episodes had names until they brought up the crab metal song possibly being in the description and then going to the description of ep 22 and seeing it for the first time!
This episode is called…
“The Good, The bad, and the purple”
