Fixing A Dirt Bike Carburetor That Leaks Gas Out The Bottom

- Our 1997 Suzuki DR350 Runs, but not as well as it should. It idles unreliably and backfires. I noticed that the carburetor was leaking gas from the overflow so in this video we correct that problem and see if it improves how well the bike runs. Typically this type of leak is caused by a dirty float valve. The carburetor is a Mikuni TM33.
I love this daily video format. It's like hanging out with friends, but friends you can pause and come back to after doing stuff.
Literally always come back to finish these videos.. love these guys
I don’t care what some are saying, the new video style makes me feel like I’m right in the garage with you guy’s wrenching. 😁
And a feeling of interactivity.
100%
This is literally zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance
I would say the clicking you hear is the compression relief on the cam shaft, you don’t hear it while it’s running because of centrifugal force.
💯
Upvote my comment if you want chicken videos! Maybe a weekly sunday update to fill the daily video schedule!
He got onto the philosophy because Camera Girl stopped with the viewer questions! You gotta keep the questions rolling Camera Girl!
yup. even if she already knows its good to keep asking question so he can explain. so viewers can understand
Ok so I believe the o-ring around the brass seat could be leaking by. Even if the needle is sealing, it will go around the outside of the brass seat.
My favorite carburetor channel ❤️
I’m keen for a chicken video and a Motorcycle piranha documentary
May I suggest you do some shorts? These will eventually get into people's algorithm and draw them to your channel. I honestly don't remember how I found your channel, but it's my favorite channel. I don't think you need to do a video every day, but a 30-40 minute weekly video would suffice. Check out Junkyard Digs format. I think you can minimize editing by just turning the camera on and off. Just some suggestions. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the ideas!
Where the needle valve meets the seat. Good motto for a carburetor channel.
The best carburetor channel
🤣😂
This is exactly a problem i'm running into! Always love your guys awesome attitude and valuable experience and knowledge!
@BrianLopez4 hope it helps, thanks for the comment!
You do amazing work, keep up the great job 👍
Loved that whole "contentment" tangent. A lesson im learning as well.
I am blown away! 🥰🤩 Love You Guys!
Don't feel bad, not many can belt out Robert Plant. 🎼🎵🎶🎸🥁🎤
Been loving these videos man I will continue to watch daily as long as you upload makes my day seeing that Jennie’s garage posted, I still have those two kdx200s I sent you a message about a little bit ago and sure enough they are up and running and riding perfect I went back and watched your old kdx 200 videos and rebuilt my carbs perfectly thanks to you sir keep up the amazing work!
Glad your bikes are running good!! Appreciate the comment.
Common 350k! Praying for traction for your channel. I love you guys. God bless you guys!!
I love watching your videos. Please don't stop.
The Towel Over The License Plate Made Me Laugh. Should Have Put A Jenny's Garage Sign Over It.
That a blue $1 harbor freight Phillips head? Those are awesome. I buy one each time I’m there and just sprinkle them around the house.
I use a mity-vac to test a needle and seat for sealing. As Taryl would say, “That O-ring was hard as a carp!”
Finally what I've been waiting for, bad singing and carburators
It’s like Sherlock and Watson deducing the problem and solving the crime…. Problem
Running rich like you said. Drop the needle/rase the clip. The needle adjustment is for at idle. By lowering it, it will slow the fuel from go up.
The leaking is from the float level needs adjusted. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, i too am wondering about the float level position. Especially because he never mentioned anything about it.
I gotta give Jake credit- he's persistent & tenacious!! If I reinstall a carb and still have an issue, I walk away for a day and tinker with another project.
"somebody come and buy this thing, i just want it out" 😂 I know that feeling, got a Yamaha Beluga 80 at the moment that I want to sell, but can't in good conscience sell something that I know has an issue (rich running all through the rev range). It's infuriating when you can't quite put your finger on the problem, especially when it's not your pride and joy.
love small engines, love Merle and Waylon.
We speak the same language
Great video once again
Glad you liked it!
Just when Jake thought he was out it pulled him back in... Michael Corleone couldn't have put it better. 🙂
A fella can not have enough o rings. I will be buying a ticket for your upcoming music tour. Loving the videos and let's see a chicken video
Let’s GO! Love seeing you guys back to like your old self. I’ve been watching you guys since the very first carb video you did comparing fake carbs to original carbs. It’s very easy watching you guys when your sprints are high keep up the positive attitude and keep pumping out the awesome videos. I hope you guys are making tons of money. Y’all definitely deserve the subscribers and the cash flow. I’ll put I good word in with the greatest big guy above!
Your words ring true right now brother thank you.
Nooooo! You can't let the DR go. It's screaming out for a full overhaul. It's such a fun bike to ride.
I'm conflicted about it. It could be a nice bike, but there are also so many other cool things to work on instead.
@@jenniesgarage Fair enough. I used to have a DR 250 Djebel and it still has a special place in my heart. The 350 was never produced for the Japanese market, but it's like the 250's big brother. A lot of people go for 250 cc bikes in Japan due to the fact that there's no mandatory vehicle inspection on them and they're much cheaper to insure.
I appreciate the daily content!
I'm in for the chicken video
Totally agree with you Jake on all fronts politics and contentment. I will say my highs and lows aren't a roller coaster these days but I do have to to watch I stay above the happy line and not slip below into the sad line. If that makes sense
For sure it makes sense. I am learning to recognize the lows and ride them out like a ship on rough water so I come out undamaged when the sun comes out again.
Regarding the tyre plug, (if it didn't leak as well) you can just cut it flush with the tire using a stanley knife.
I'm going to watch all new videos once or twice a week. 🤙
Ummm.... Bob Seger, is that you? (Ramblin Gamblin Man)
You answered my question on a video! Love you guys
I had a similar idle problem with my vn800 after I rebuilt the carb but it was because I didn’t have the air filter on so it was too lean. I covered the carb with my hand to regulate the airflow to test it and the idle did improve. Once I put the air box on the problem went away.
rambling fever by merle oh and a was thinking and singing hoss at the exact same time lol
Thank god someone has removed the price tag on the grey chair!
I would love to see a chicken video.
Your position on politics is perfect. Thank's a lot
Thank's for the video, have a nice happy meal!
Wow, Jake! I have never had that situation. I have had to bend the tab (old school aluminum floats) to seat the needle...wait, I once did have a needle leak. It was the wrong one that someone put in and it was supposed to have a rubber tip and it was just metal and the contour of the needle tip did not match the seat.
Yep and over time they seat with each other making a good seal.
Some good stoic nuggets in here.

A daily video is probably a daunting task. I, for one, would be fine with 2-3 days a week. Alot of the TH-cam channels I watch upload 1-2 days a week.
Always the way, when you want something to perform as predicted or desired, it never does... :P
Do you think the idling issue is a carb problem or maybe a crank seal going bad, a crack in the intake boot or the lack of an air box ? I'm hoping you get it fixed and figure it out. Have you done a leak down test on engine ? There are so many issues that could cause the erratic idle issue 😀 Good luck... love the videos.... hello from Ohio
Tell camera woman to do chicken videos.... I think chickens are awesome... I've had a few and ducks too.... funny animals and good eggs 🥚
I had the same thing happen on my 1955 carb on my chevy. Nice job. Also yes I would love to see A chicken video as we love chickens.
I'd like to see the chickens. Also how about the "Scrub Cadet"...
It's 4pm here in Oz I've just sat down to almost certain boardem. But then I see you've dropped another video on your carb channel
Also watching in OZ. (Perth)
Oz Brisbane
Watching in Dubbo NSW...
@@coachjeff493 nice im about 2 hours south in stanthorpe..
Make sure the bolts are tight that hold it on. Will throw timing off. Check the valve clearance while you're in there.
I wish I would just watch until the end before I comment. I always do that😂
I’m with you…I’m what I call an Ionesco a-political…politics/politicians should not be important to a person beyond “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”…family/friends are of ultimate importance…not left, right middle…
Wait, isn’t this her channel?!
I have a 1991 DR350S with the BST33 carburettor. Picked it up 3 years ago as a barn find with only 5000 km on it. Mine also idles irregularly. I've been playing with float height, idle jet, idle air, fuel screw, needle jet, needle height...but the irregular idle remains. I think my idle is too rich, because i never need the enricher (choke) to start. But any leaner on the fuel screw worsens my idle.
When the engine is warm, the idle also starts running away if I go any leaner on the fuel screw.
Use a Qtip in a drill, and some mothers metal polish for the needle seat. Polish to a mirror finish, works great.
Every time I watch there channel, I get generic viagra and hair loss commercials? Hmmm
Long time watcher, first time commenter- I don't like the new format and prefer the old style where you almost strictly worked on motorcycles and left out the philosophy. Cameragirl, please keep asking him watcher questions so he doesn't philosophize! Glad you got a bigger garage to have some elbow room, now get busy working on the motorcycle projects!
Thanks for the comment, we are still experimenting and finding a good rhythm.
Gotta let the good feelings in, just don’t get too attached to them 🤪
Camera girl should do a video performing what a feeling. That would be great
That clicking sound is probably the alternator 😆 or more likely a decompressor cam for starting. What are your plans for the XL600r motor?
The float normally has a bendable tang which holds the valve pin. So you can adjust the float hight. If the float hight is wrong too high and it floods the carb too low and it runs low on fuel at WOT . Good luck with finding a manual with specific float hight measurements.
White brothers exhaust is the loudest dirt bike muffler ever made
Jennies Garage discovered that Move is a four letter word.
Moving is always a good idea until you actually have/go to do it. 😮💨
Remember: When troubleshooting, it seems 90% of fuel problems are electrical related... while 90% of electrical problems are fuel related. 🤪
I like to check the needle where it slides in the seat. Sometimes they wear there or might even have ridges.
i new gas came out of our bottom , i had no idea gas leaked from a carburetor bottom as well
Go ahead and get an air filter and air boot, new fenders and the new aftermarket headlight unit you know you want to you know it deserves it
349k, let's go get to 350k!!
I know your comfort zone is dirt bikes and scooters but have you thought about buying and flipping some big street bikes? It would be cool to see you working on Triumphs, Harley's, Indians and Honda cruisers
Check intake boot for leakse, maybe sucking in air causing lean condition. Check your plug color.
I had an xr70 carbie recently that had actually pinhole corroded through the carb bowl.
Aliexpress a Chinese replacement was the cheapest way to get a new carb bowl and I just kept the oem Honda carb
Been waiting on this video.
I'm finishing up my little CT 90, it's gonna be a i catcher
the valve clearances can make the motor behave really different. E.g. when the clearance is too little the bike won‘t start or only with pushing it, and most importantly might have a „fluctuating“ idle. Had this Problem with my KTM SX-F 250
"Somebody come and buy this thing"
lmao
I’d be happy for a chicken video too!!
Is that vent hose on the water heater to code it look odd
I'm sure you checked this but is the exhaust clear?
38 Special. Wide-Eyed Southern Boys. 1981. 😀
It was the 13th music video to be played on the day that MTV debuted in 1981. (Pasted)
I was 19! 😮Remember Martha Quinn? Nah, you guys are too young. ☺
I have seen many times problems like this when air is getting into gas line from some place. Check seals and for holes in line. My guess.
Did the previous owners have a parrot on the perch in the garage?
That click sounds like a loose cam sprocket
I needs a valve adjustment bad. Sounds like a loose lash too.
I wonder if it was backfiring because it was flooded because the seal is bad
Well weed makes the channel better.
Tractor is Tango!
I like motorcycle piranha! 🐟
A chicken video would be quite fowl...
The "click" sounds like an auto-decompression thingy. If there is fuel dribbling from the bottom of the carby, it will never idle properly,
Can you please take the old paint off DR gas tank please.
My DRZ will not run properly without drain tubes on all the barbs including the over flow barb.
Dinner is NOT chicken, right? 😂
yet another chicken video enthusiast here ,also, when are we getting them hats?
Make that three! I LOVE chicken....videos. 😂🐔🐣 ("The Cubcake Tango" 💃)
Id put an in line fuel filter on
let's do a chicken video!
Put the air filter then adjust the carrbuter sound good for the bike engine is best
