Hey great video! I run an Echo CS-490 and she boogeys! I do the same thing with stumps around my homestead but an additional thing you can do to help it decompose is to bore cut a X in the center of it, do this last cause it will obv dull your chain if you go through the whole stump and catch dirt, but what this will do is allow water/bugs to get into the center and it will help it rot! I did this to a stump on our homestead a few years ago and now you can run a rod into the area where it was and its completely rotted! Just trying to help out a fellow homesteader! Its episode 4 on my channel! Back in the beginning lol
Info you... I have a bad back, so moving things around can be quite strenuous. I start up my splitter, and run the wedge to the splitting plate before moving it. I changes the center of balance so that it moves easier. Try it.
Finally , someone who knows how to properly use a chain grinder. Most of the people i have seen take off so much material every time they sharpen a tooth. Great video.

Do you ever set up the splitter vertical? The storm gods gave us a 42 inch Red Oak which leaves 18-20 inch blocks that are the better part of 300 pounds. My 68 year old back just can't lift that much.
TH-camr by the name Andrew Camarata has a sweet Mod for a wood-splitter similar to yours. It's pretty sweet allows the Splitter to split them chunks into 4 sections in one sequence. Will be able to get alot more split in the same amount of time. Good camera angles.
I really do like your wood shed. I need one like that. Good air and dry all winter too. We heat, cook and make our water hot with wood. So wood is our fuel source. That being said. I have got to say that I like my wood splitter a whole lot better than yours. Min splits on the push and the pull. NO reset. I also have log lifter which is important for us old guys. my back started hurtin watchin you hump them logs over to the splitter splitting when splitter in horizontal position. I Usually split with splitter in vertical position, turn a stump up use as a stool and have a stack where I can just roll a log over and split. That does save the ole back.
I had to laugh at the color progression of your clothes from start to finish. I used to cut split n stack a hundred FC every year with the same basic equipment. Young Man, What a Blessed Life you and your Family are sharing Great Video work, You getting much better at it. Love watching it all Regards, Steve and JuneBug living life in Beaumont, Cally (long time viewer, love giving you the "thumbs ups")
Back when I was a kid, if I asked my dad about getting a wood splitter, he would of asked me what's wrong with our ax, slitting mall, and wedges. lol. I must admit that I enjoyed splitting firewood. For some reason some things were easier 45 years ago. Great video.
Well done! I loved the camera angles and the editing. If you can make the back breaking work of cutting and splitting firewood look entertaining, that is an accomplishment. Unfortunately, most guys your age have never done this and don't care to. I guess they can eat their I-Phones and freeze when to grid goes down.
I've been cutting firewood with my family since I was 4 (helping stack it that is), and have been cutting for a few years for my family and to sell on my own. I also do chainsaw repair, something nobody else in my family does. On top of that, I'm the one that has to do tune ups, because no one else cares to. It's not an age but an individual issue.
"when to grid goes down" The reasons for it "going down" and staying down will probably lead to other 'problems' that will not make us enjoy our food and firewood very much... lol
Look into a log catcher for your splitter. You'll spend a lot less time bending over to pick up the big chunks that fall to the ground. Best $50 I've spent
Keep the front edge of the splitting blade really sharp and the splitter won't have to work hard. It takes a lot more energy to split wood with a dull edge of the blade and your engine will last longer if you keep it sharp. l use to sharpen my blade at least once every four months. Keep track of the sharpness of the blade it's actually critical . Gerald Gibeau Schenectady, New York
I have the same splitter and I love it!!! I found a log catcher at TSC for $30 clearance after the season a couple of years ago. Saves my back Best $30 I’ve spent in a long time! Great job .... really like your woodshed👍
Your chain will last longer if you debark the base of the stump before you make your stmp cut. Tons of dirt down there. Chains and dirt do not get along.
I think that sharpener runs in two directions. It will be better sharpening and better on your stone if you reverse it when sharpening the side of the chain at 2:01
You better start wearing a back brace or you'll pay a heavy price when you reach retirement age. When splitting vertically, sit on an unsplit round or on a 5 gal bucket. Better on the back.
I have an Echo 590, it's a great saw. I couldn't help but to cringe a little when you were cutting that log up on the ground, I use a timberjack which is basically a cant hook that keeps the log off the ground and in turn keeps your chain out of the dirt.
Shoot I'm actually looking for a few nice medium chunks of oak to hand carve a few plates out of. Any suggestions on where I can get some decent quality oak to carve?

A dull saw and you need someone to teach you how to properly notch and back cut a tree. Throw the electric sharpener away and learn how to do it properly by hand. It will be a lot sharper and your chain will last twice as long.
Wow that was amazing. I’m going to start making TH-cam videos of me passed out on couch with empty bottle of Jack Daniels after my wife screamed at me all evening for letting my hound dog piss on the curtains
Its basically a depth guide...used to make sure your rakers are not to high....not sure if you know , but if your rakers are too high your cutting teeth won't contact the wood....and the rakers are what cleans out the sawdust...you can purchase a tool that files your cutting teeth and your rakers at the same time...
Brad Jackson yeah it does. But when your in the bush falling or slashing you goota do it with just a flat and round file by hand lol. That takes a long time.
Two minutes into the cutting...when he finally got there, I saw three things I would never do and I'm not even a faller. Would not stay there with him cutting. Besides not having the splitter closer to the log....or skidding the log up closer the the shed...too much extra work in what he was doing. I agree that he should have a log catcher to help a bit. There is also a way of building out in front of the splitter when he went vertical to keep the logs from pitching forward. All hard learned lessons.

yeah if you do the math, the waste slabs when sawing boards are a whole 36% of each log. Save enough branches and maybe you can hit 50%. Then why not just take two trees make the best of each? To me this only makes sense if you're never going to cut down another oak for lumber ever again.
