My uncle has a saw mill,.. A little bit bigger,.. Saws up to 38 inches,.. He always uses a metal detector over the whole log to see if any nails or bullets inside it before he saws a log,.. takes a few minutes to do,.. And it takes him over an hour to replace a new blade.

Nice job....Thanks for posting. I had a couple of Heart Pine old growth beams I saved and then resawed them into vertical grain boards and built a piece of furniture. Some of it had more than 30 growth rings to the inch. Think of that, a hundred years to grow a 2 x 4. That redder wood in yours is heart pine. Get ready. When I ran mine through a drum sander it would clog the belt completely in about three feet. I spent half the time soaking the belts in Simple Green and putting them back on. Consider hand planes and card scrapers. Beautiful stuff. Dry it and enjoy. You worked hard for it.

Three words.... Alaskan Chainsaw Mill! There is no doubt that a dedicated sawmill is the most efficient machine for lumber making, but for logs that size, and the amount of time and work maneuvering, trimming, etc., you would have had multiple slabs done with a chainsaw Mill.
I still greatly admire your persistence and work ethic!! Well done! 💪💪💪

I run and LT10 so pretty much same specs for log size as you 28" and yes I have done 32 or 33. Just a pain though . What I have started doing so I dont have to pass on these nice big logs is I bought a Alaskan chainsaw mill and just break it down to a manageable size for the mill.. I hate milling with chainsaw because its painfully slow but it's almost faster to just take a good 8 or 10" slab off side of big log and makes the rest of log easy to just make lumber. Idk I'm just rambling I guess but thought it a fairly cheap way for you to be able to utilize some if the bigger stuff. Love the channel thanks for letting us follow along.. do some great work..

Great job whittling the log down its not easy. Personally this log would been a great candidate to split. You just never know what you will find when you open a log. One would not have guessed a nail would be where that one was. But all said and done that going to be some very nice useful lumber. That pine would be a little soft for flooring though but would sure make some awesome cabinets.

Good video. Suggest frequent brushing of the cooling air intakes for cooling the cylinder heads. I was worried with the amount of sawdust on the front and rear of the engine. I know those engines are not cheap and overheat easily if the air inlets front and rear are not clean as well as blowing the engine out front to back and back to front now and then. If you are going to work the old mill that hard, I'd suggest paying close attention to the cooling as air over the cylinder heads is all you have got. Have a good one

While I was using yard trees I kept a salsa jar for junk hidden in the wood. When I finally ran out of yard tree lumber, there was a good fistful of pieces of screws and nails in the jar.. I estimated that back then, thirty years ago, the damage to blades and planer knives was over $1,000.

Lay your log stops down a bit and cheat the bigger logs over towards your exiting side a few more inches. Then you won’t have so much chainsaw work on the entry side. Wedge both sides then on the bottoms. This works well.

I have kind of an advantage in this life, I grew up around men and machinery, mainly logging, and my dad was involved in it from the time of horses and steam engines. He tried to pass on to me his experience, and what he didn't teach me I learned from my own experiences, sometimes the hard way.
I'm usually pretty impressed with you, but this operation was one step from disaster from the start.
Rolling that large of log up there on the mill is asking for a back injury, rolling them without the log dog or some other means of stopping them from rolling back is potential for much worse. See if you can find the hook from and old peavy or cant hook, attach to your winch line and drive it into the bottom of the log and then turn it with the winch. At least wrap the winch line loosely around the log to keep it from rolling back on you, and always be in a position to get out of the way if the log starts coming back, that means clearing out your ramps..
If you're going to do this again you must find some way to securely dog those logs down to the mill, plastic wedges on a steel deck is an accident waiting to happen.
    Otherwise, nice wood.
