    In 2000 or 2001 I had a Pentium III 900mhz, 512mb ram, and Voodoo 3 2000. A year or so later I upgraded to a PNY Geforce4 Ti 4200. Had a Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick was real fun with Hellbender and Fury 3. Love looking at these old systems takes me back.

      Great system! I had something similar, a p3 600 which I ran with through a few voodoos, even though it wasn't nearly as powerful as I needed it to be for the voodoo 5. I naver had a GF Ti back in the day, went to the ATI route, chaper cards and easier to find down here. The Sidewinder is such a great line of products, I miss that.

    How did I overlook this video til now?! I really love seeing builds where expensive, historical graphics cards like this are used...just to play games and enjoy it. I like your point about the slower CPU not stressing the card as much and extending its life. Not something I thought of before.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, buddy. I'm glad you enjoyed this. Lately I get into long arguments with myself about putting these video cards to real use. But for now, it's being used almost daily. I might substitute it for something easier to acquire and save the voodoos to use in specific reviews.

    when I heard 60 speed cdrom I was thinking boom and haha it happened. 48x /52x is the maximum speed I consider safe :)

    Voodoo powah! Great build, and video. I have a soft spot for more period accurate builds as of late. This fits that exactly. Great time capsule to really enjoy those late 90s and early 2000 games.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you my friend. I'm thinking of trying faster CPUs, you're going to hear about it for sure 😂. I think this build will have a definite spot in the collection, instead of being part of the great diffusion of parts that is my lab. Have a great week! 👍

    Cold winter day, cup of coffee, and some retro action, perfect !
    Nice build, and very nice monitor, retro build without CRT is just not right.
    Its funny how everyone is searching that first PC case that they had, im also im search of one but not quit to find one
    Kingpin life of crime and SOF 1 and maybe even SOF 2 should run nice on that machine.
    Great games really need to reply them on good CRT.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm happy to be with you for it, thanks for watching! CRT does make things look so much better. I tried with the 4x3 LCD but it's definitely not the same thing. Kingpin I haven't tried, but I did play sof back in the day.

      Thanks for pinup.
      Yeah good crt, trinitron or flatron can't beat that
      Kingpin is really something else, Q2 engine but with gangsters and ghetto environments

    Very nice system. The P3 600 mhz would have been way too slow for the V5 5500. The P3 800 mhz is ok, but even so with a Tualatin 1400 mhz the V5 5500 would get almost 2x more FPS in 1024x768 in newer CPU dependent games like: Deus Ex, Undying, Serios Sam, Max Payne, Rune, Medal of Honor, Warcraft 3, UT 2003 and many others.

    Ghost Recon and Rogue Spear were my main games back in the day toghether with Jane's Fleet Command. Unfortunately for me i can not remember what PC configuration i had in those days, from around 2000 to 2006. But thanks for bringin some of those memories from those days.

    I really like the build... except for the extra fan hanging on twist ties. Sorry to take issue with that but I'm a stickler for making these things "look nice." I'd recommend a "PCI slot cooler" but then again I took mine to the extreme with a clear acrylic housing for the Voodoo 5, integrating an 80mm fan upgrade. I've also fabricated mounts for extra fans in the past using little aluminum sheets/strips from the local hardware store, and those turned out really nice too. I really like making custom bits like that though.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. Well I can see why you don't like it, I don't like it either haha. I don't have an option for it right now. I'm looking for a bracket, that holds the fan in the proper place. Have a great day Angie.

      I had a voodoo 4 4500 PCI that my mom got me for Christmas but I gave it away years later and I regret it so much! I still have the box though so that's something. See I had moved onto the GeForce 4 and was no longer using my Voodoo 4 so it was just sitting in a drawer collecting dust. My aunt's computer had a dead video card so I put in her machine to get her back going and that was the last time I ever saw it again. Time passed and who knows where it is today. Either thrown away or sold. O well...

    The 600 MHZ PIII is ok, if you use the Full-Scene Antialiasing (2x or 4x) option of the V5 5500. Fillrate Limiting, so a for example a 1 GHZ PIII would not make much difference with FSAA, maybe only more in Unreal Engine based games.

    great build! i can 100% relate to rebuilding a pc from the past. i have a PIII 450 with voodoo 3 that reproduces the machine i used in middle school, it served me for 2 years until i built a new PC in high school [first time doing it myself] in summer 2001 that was an Athlon XP 1700 w/ a Geforce 3 Ti200... a machine i also recreated recently although with a slightly better CPU like you did.

    This is why despite my love for retro hardware I'm not eager to spend some money on it - sure, building your pc is fun - especially from retro parts. But I would propably be too scared to play on it anyway - especially since I have no experience with replacing smaller elements. So I imagine loosing something like Voodoo 5 would have been quite painful.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it changed a bit from a few years ago. All these parts were affordable a while ago. But oh well, you can still do cheap builds. Every now and then I do one around here. Have a good week!

    What a gorgeous build! I loved the video from start to finish. I personally opted to give my V5 as much power as possible and ended up using stuff from a couple of years later hehe! Although the "main" components are between 2002 and 2003, I kept Windows 2000 as the OS and installed a bunch of games that use Glide to get the most out of it. Here's the list of components:
    MB: DFI AD73 Pro (VIA KT266A & Universal AGP)
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (AXDA2400DKV3C, 2.0Ghz)
    RAM: 3x 512MB 266Mhz DDR
    Video: 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
    Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (SB0350)
    HDD: Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB (STM3160215A)
    Case: G3 Black
    PSU: Thermaltake 450W TT-450NL1NH-1

      That's a great build and I see your point! I might upgrade the CPU a bit, I don't plan on going very far though. There will be other computers built to fill in the gap for the next generation so I'm ok with that. Thanks for watching, have a great week!

    Great video - gotta love the Voodoo 5 5500! That's amazing with the Windows 98 CD exploding like that, I've never had it happen to me but have heard of similar stories before. I'm assuming these old discs get brittle over time. A great DOS utility is "CDBQ" which can force lower speeds via IDE commands sent to the drive. I like to use it on any retro builds with fast CD drives to keep the noise levels down. I also use "Nero Drive Speed" in Windows 98 for similar effect.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Mike! Those are good suggestions to keep the drive speed lower. I was thinking of doing that, in fact if the drive hadn't failed completely I would've gone that route for sure. Thanks for watching my friend, have a great week!

    I'd go with a faster cpu & use some sort of fps limiter too compromise between the two in most games, or run with vsync enabled like you did with Clive Barkers Undying & ghost recon i think, maybe it was enabled already in the drivers if you didn't specifically change it, which in that case you'd want a faster cpu too simply keep that fps cap more stable in general, the average temperature will be fine still.
    Also just too reduce temperatures a bit more quietly, mount a 1000 rpm 120mm fan standing up in there with some double sided tape pointed at the cards blowing air towards the rear io if you leave that open or from the side blowing against the motherboard.
    When it comes too the powersupply, before the Pentium 4 & newer socket 462 motherboards introduced the eps12v 4 pin plug.
    Majority of the power was most commonly from 5v & 3.3v with stuff like harddrives, floppy drives, cd, dvd readers & burners that took advantage of 12v more then the motherboard connected components did.
    Some 12v power ofc could come from the 12v pins on the 24 pin but that made for long pcb traces & a vrm that was sometimes not that efficient & quite noisy filtration unless placed very close too it.
    Was playing Carmageddon splat pack earlier today at 1280x960 using the steam release of the Carmageddon Max Pack, need too tweak some things too get it running smoothly but it's getting there.
    Still some fps drops here & there on some tracks that I've played so far.
    But fairly stable with shadows off on all cars & everything on highest settings otherwise, might drop scenery view distance a step just too see if it stays more stable at 50 - 60 fps.
    Nglide in the game folder with vsync turned off, gamma 0.9 & 1280x960 is what i run with an external fps limit, some have better luck with it being smooth keeping that vsync on if you want too try with the gog release of carmageddon max pack.
    LOTS of games I'd run on a pc like that natively in windows 98 - windows xp.
    Motoracer 1&2, Midtown Madness 1&2, Monster truck madness 1&2, (Quake 2 & expansions.), Mafia 1, Colin Mcrae 1&2, Sega rally 1&2, (Half-life 1 + expansions & some mods maybe like poke646, POV, AOM DC.)
    Psygnosis Monster Trucks/Thunder Truck Rally (Has speed issues without vsync & with too fast hardware.)
    Carmageddon TDR 2000 (tends too crash on modern hardware quite a bit unless you get settings just right on compatibility.)
    Carmageddon 1 + splat pack & Carmageddon 2
    Tomb raider 1 through 3, Driver 1 (Simply for the cheats.) Rayman 1,2, Max Payne.
    (Max payne was for a short while used as a benchmark for how demanding it can get in some places before Far Cry 1 released.)
    Aliens vs Predator from around 1999 - 2000 (Seriously missing out if you haven't checked this game out. Got Marine, Predator & Alien single player campaigns.)
    Unreal Gold & Unreal Tournament.
    Forsaken, Tactical Ops Assault On Terror (Basically Counter Strike in the Unreal engine with bots.) Excessive speed, Micro Machines V3, Panzer Dragoon.
    Got more but think this comment is gigantic enough lol.
    Not many of these games that cant be patched too run on a newer pc with the help of nglide, dgvoodoo, dgvoodoo2 etc...

    The Voodoo 5 really makes this a special system for me as I've never seen one in person, let alone owned one. I had a PC around this time, which I believe had a TNT card in it. As a result I have a lot of love for games from this era, but I've never played most of the ones you've shown here so that was cool to see. Black & White is one of those games I've partially played a number of times but could never keep going with. And while I absolutely love driving games, I'm terrible at rally games! Thanks for the video - shame about that partial case you bought. 🤣

    Voodoo5 builds are always very cool. It's hard to justify it on a performance level given that Geforces are more powerful and plentiful, but if you like retro hardware you'd understand it's not just about performance.

    • @SUCRA
      @SUCRA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds about right. It's more of a quirk than anything. But I like my voodoos. I have another system in mind that will probably use a GeForce, a bit more powerful though.

    I use these PCI fan brackets from ebay in some of my builds to keep the soundcards cool and any air bleeding over makes its way into the GPU, can attatch up to 3 if needed. capacitors are going to suffer with more heat so the cooler they are..the longer i can avoid having to diagnose a failing cap and replace the whole lot...Flagship Soundblaster cards when to town with them for filtering.

      How's it going, hello! Just online. If you're looking for something, I suggest getting on your local e-shops daily until it comes up. It's what I do.

      Epox had such legendary motherboards! Unfortunately retro specifics are hard to find. I'll keep an eye open though. Thanks!
