Thank you very much for testing this two cards together. In my opinion better choice will be Voodoo 4 4500 for retro PC. For T&L games better usually use today better card and Glide support can be great.
Terrific comparison! Sad to see the beginning of the end for 3dfx showcased but they were at least somewhat competitive with that built up glide support. Great video, very well made!
I would say that the beginning of the end for 3dfx came with the release of the V5 5500 in may 2000 and that the V4 4500 released at 179 $ while the GF 2 MX was 30-50 $ cheaper finished 3dfx off.
Excellent video. I couldnt wait too see your opinion and results about those cards. Usually the GF 2 MX was faster in OpenGL games and the V4 4500 in Glide games. Sadly most magazines and sites in the year 2000 tested the cards with just Quake 3, 3dmark 2000 and maybe one more game, drowing a conclusion based on just 2-3 games. The problem for 3dfx was the price, the V4 4500 being 30-50 $ more expensive than a GF 2 MX when released and also the support for just DirectX6 while the Geforce had DirectX 7 support. Its also weird that 3dfx never released a 183 mhz version of the V4 & 5 to better compete with the Geforce 1 & 2 series, considering that most V4 & 5 overclock to over 183 mhz with 6ns memory and that 3dfx a year earlier in mid-1999 released the V3 3500 with 183 mhz and 5.5 ns memory.
Thanks! I'm glad I could finally share it with you. I think that with the mini GL the voodoo is competitive, but otherwise it is slower. And I agree, 3dfx charged a bit much for the voodoo 4, but remember, it had and extra feature, glide. So it could be worth it. Thanks for watching once again, great having you. 👍
10:00 Serius Sam. The problem with the 2x Antialiasing in with the Voodoo 4, which drops the FPS to unplayable is the fact that Voodoo 4 has only 32MB ram. Because of the 2x anti-aliasing the card has to keep 2 frame buffers only for anti aliassing (a frame buffer is 1024*768*4byte = 3MB, and we need at least 4 from them, because of the triple buffering, and a depth buffer. Total it makes 3*4=12MB. With anti aliasing we double the one buffer, which makes it 16MB. The textures are eating a lot of memory as well. To render a picture, always new textures needed depending where the player located. And that's why less memory means the textures has to be swapped more frequently from the system RAM. Because you are using a PCI version of the card, which has only 33MHz Speed on 32bit, you can make the math, how slow is the data transmission rate from CPU to Voodoo. The 2x AGP card, is 4 times faster as PCI.
@@SUCRA You know it! Coming from an S3 ViRGE, the Voodoo 3 + Glide was like... 🤩😍 I really hope for an Unreal remaster with Unreal Engine 5 or a proper sequel someday.

Hey, that sounds great! I'll subscribe so I'll be there for your first video. Don't bust yourself up about not having voodoo cards, I bought mine throughout the years and most before the price hike. There are other video cards that can be used. Good luck! 👍
Nice video, I'd like to note a couple of things: a) The chipset on the motherboard you are using is the Intel i865GV which omits a true AGP slot. Instead, motherboard vendors were allowed to implement their own crude versions of AGP, such as the MSI AGR slot on this board. As such, performance (and compatibility) suffers greatly on period correct hardware and probably on the GF2 MX as well. The Voodoo4's performance is likely untouched as the VSA100 does not make use of any AGP features, it just treats AGP as a fast PCI slot. I had to find that out the hard way myself when using an Asrock P4i65GV which uses the proprietary Asrock AGI slot and had random crashes and utterly subpar performance on a 6600GT years ago. Switching to a P4i65G fixed all this! So there's definitely more performance to be extracted out of the MX here. b) Something to keep in mind that this comparison does not take into account is that this 3GHz Pentium 4 is much faster than the average CPUs of the era, especially those found in the systems of the budget minded folks that bought these cards. HW T&L on GF2MX greatly uplifts performance by removing CPU overhead on those slower CPUs. On faster CPUs, such as this Pentium 4, it's likely that the CPU can bruteforce its way and come out faster than the GF2MX's HW T&L, so you may be witnessing the inverse effect of a real world scenario so to speak!
Hey! Thanks for your comment, all valid inputs. I have a few videos with period accurate hardware, it's usually my way to go. On this one I wanted to go as fast as possible with the CPU.

I benchmarked my Voodoo 3 3500 against the Geforce 2 MX 128-bit in 1024x768 / 16-bit and in practically all Glide games the Voodoo 3 3500 was faster and unexpectedly it was also a little faster in some of the much newer games like Unreal Tournament 2003 and Warcraft 3 even with totally outdated drivers (the last official ones are from nov 2000).
