@꧁.꧂𝐒𝖊𝖑𝖆𝖍 333꧁_꧂ The Church of Jesus Christ teaches true doctrine. The Word of Wisdom is not about "can" or "can't", but rather about God's will, and anyone can come to know for themselves that it truly is God's will. Indeed, Jesus did drink wine, and those were different times with different concerns. Ignorance can be overcome with knowledge, and God's knowledge brings us peace.

Actually, a larger portion of the Word of Wisdom is devoted to promoting the idea of eating fruit, vegetables and whole grains. While they did not know this in the 1830s, this Word of Wisdom Diet is now scientifically proven to decrease the risk of certain malignancies, strokes and heart disease -- just like the avoiding alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

    • @NicolasConnault
      @NicolasConnault 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Nothing is ever scientifically proven. The very definition of the scientific method precludes the notion of undeniable proof.

@Mike The longest living humans documented are the Okinawa people who ate this way. Also, more modernly, the 7th day Adventists who also eat this way have been studied for decades and are the longest living modern society. LDS who actually follow the word of wisdom enjoy the same results. Read the China study.

    • @Silentpartner2176
      @Silentpartner2176 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

You're absolutely correct. The scientific studies are finding this now. Here is a quote from Apostle John A. Widtsoe (Priesthood manual). The great Builder of the earth provided well for the physical needs of His children."

The word of wisdom particularly the parts advocating healthy eating, have been integral to our family’s health, including my wife’s journey of coming off antidepressants. We’ve received great insights that have helped us further our desire to not only live the commandment but really take care of the bodies we’ve been given.
If I were to sum up the word of wisdom, I’d say, “Treat your body like a temple with healthy foods and herbs, while avoiding or limiting consumption of anything that is habit forming, addictive, or dangerous.”
Grateful for this revelation and the church’s subsequent emphasis on living the principles taught therein.

I joined the LDS faith at the age of 20, in 1975. Prior to that, I was on my way to continuing the many generations of alcoholics in my family lineage.
I thank God that I discovered the church to break that awful chain. Just within my childhood, as well as adulthood, I witnessed the effects of alcohol on my dad, uncle, and many of my cousins. It even took the life of one of my dear sisters, last year. And I don’t even have enough time to talk about drugs.
The Lord has blessed me with strength enough to continue to work at my job at an average of 50 hours a week. And I am turning 67. I attribute much of this fortune to the Lord’s admonition in the Word of Wisdom.

Social media addiction, video game addiction, pornography addiction, gospel hobby (second coming prepper addiction)….There is definitely a lot of things that any of us could develop an addiction with. Even good things can become addictions and then those things are not so good. The Word of Wisdom also teaches about moderation in all things. Too much of anything can cause you to become unbalanced in life. Moderation in all things can lessen the chance of developing addictions. The Word of Wisdom was primarily for spiritual benefits and those spiritual benefits have secondary physical benefits.

I feel that being sober, especially when attending service, is respectful to the congregation, but most importantly God. I have experienced a family member just going through the motions while they were impaired. Eventually it was a distraction to me because they were being disrespectful. I was sad that I lost the inspiration provided those times at service. I lost my will to go because of the trauma of going back and forth to service with an impaired husband that was disrespectful to me in the car verbally and also a distraction at service, being disrespectful to those in attendence. I like WOW except I am confused about warm drinks being bad for the belly.

I wish more emphasis was placed on the DO’s of the Word of Wisdom. In this world of fad diets it can be so confusing. If we base our food consumption on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and wholesome herbs, we would be so much healthier. Getting sucked into convenience foods and processed foods has wreaked havoc on my body. I am grateful for a handful of people who created a Word of Wisdom challenge where we focus on what we SHOULD eat, now that we are so well versed in what we shouldn’t. It has been there all along. I just needed a light shined on it. 💕

Most commonly observed/eaten foods at ward dinners, activities, etc.:
      -potatoes
      -potatoes with melted cheese/scalloped potatoes
      -spaghetti w/meatballs
      -potato w/chili or beans
-canned fruit cocktail, pears or peaches
      -jello 😁
      -brownies
      -vanilla ice cream
-caesar or garden salad, emphasis on iceberg lettuce, croutons, carrots, red (purple) cabbage, and thousand island or ranch dressing
      -potato chips
      -white/sweet rolls
      -chicken
      -applesauce
      -corn
      -rice
      -chicken casserole
      -tuna casserole
      -green grapes
-hamburgers (more just at ward BBQ's, etc., along with hot dogs and chicken, watermelon, potato chips and potato salad being also VERY common here, soda and lemonade also making an appearance here)
      -potato salads w/egg
-fruit juice mixed with sprite or 7-up
      -cupcakes
      -pie
...I don't think that is too much meat... If anything, in Anglo-America at least, we tend to eat a fair amount of starches-prob. too much gluten and refined starches still, maybe not enough whole non-gluten grains, definitely not enough beans, nuts, seeds or veggies, about the right amount of fruit-maybe we could use a wider variety, slightly more meat/poultry than we need prob. (dep. on caloric intake, etc.), too much dairy, prob. a little less fish than we could use ideally, not enough herbs and spices, definitely too much calorie rich desserts (but we watch the candy).
We do like our potatoes, white bread/pasta, peaches and green grapes, canned green beans, chicken and ground beef... 😁

When I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in August 2011, I quit drinking and quit smoking. In I had never been a heavy drinker. However, I smoked about one pack of cigarettes per day starting at about the age of 22. I was in my early 60's when I joined the Church. I believe in personal revelation, and I believe that some of us (or perhaps many of us) can receive direct revelation from God. The best I can say of the teachings of LDS scripture is that it has produced, as a whole, the nicest people I have ever known. As my friends know, I have doubts about scripture. The Word of Wisdom is excellent advice, and I have great respect for it.

@@jaredwade3242 A "monopoly on truth" is an interesting expression. There are many people and organizations, including churches, that have gained a measure of truth, and I value their perspectives a lot. I've really appreciated what I've learned from people who have a different outlook, even related to passages of scripture that I've already studied before. That being said, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is what God has restored for us on the Earth in our day so that we may receive greater truth from Him and serve Him according to His will. I was a missionary in Japan. Green tea is the de facto national beverage there. Virtually every time we were invited into anyone's home we were offered a cup of green tea (served cold in summer, hot in winter), presented on a platter. This is a specific cultural gesture of welcome. Every time, of course, we refused the offer for reasons obvious to us (WoW) but not to our hosts, who would then have to fetch some roast barley tea (WoW-compliant) or water instead. The Japanese are an exceedingly polite people. They would invariably nod & smile & remain cordial during our presentation but I always wondered afterward how many of these potential faith investigators shut us down immediately upon our initial symbolic rebuff of their hospitality.

The focus or reason behind living the word of wisdom Is not about what to eat and what not to. It’s about coming unto Christ.
Some of us can get hung up with on topics with the Word of Wisdom. Why did Joseph and others appear to have broken the word of wisdom after it was given? What about this or that (substance in question) we have today?
It’s helpful to remember 2 things
    1. We are often guilty of "presentism"-judging historical figures by the standards of our day, instead of their day. Revelation in the Church is still continuing, line upon line.
    2. Remember the word of wisdom isn’t the fullness of the gospel by itself. Yes, it’s true and comes from God. But our focus as we strive our best to follow it shouldn’t be in the extremes. It should be on coming unto Christ. He is the way and anything we can do to better come unto Him, we should do it.

One of the most important parts of our mortal lives is learning to follow God's will. As we read in Abraham 3:25, a major part of the purpose of our lives is that God "will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them". Pray to God to ask Him if it is truly His will that you abstain from these things. When you receive the answer, if you know that He is wise and loving, you will trust that He has good reasons for commanding what He does. You will simply have the choice to obey His will or to do something else. Please know that He truly is so greatly loving and wise, and we are always better off and happier for following His counsel.

D&C 89:13. “Only in Times of Winter, or of Cold, or Famine”
This verse has caused some to ask if meat should be eaten in the summer. Meat has more calories than fruits and vegetables, which some individuals may need fewer of in summer than winter. Also, before fruits and vegetables could be preserved, people often did not have enough other food to eat in winter. Spoiled meat can be fatal if eaten, and in former times meat spoiled more readily in summer than winter. Modern methods of refrigeration now make it possible to preserve meat in any season. The key word with respect to the use of meat is sparingly

I'm not allowed anywhere near caffeine due to my weight even though I find energy drinks disgusting to drink..yuck...but for alcohol. all my family and friends are breaking away from it. And I feel like a hypocrite for drinking beer and yet feel worry for concern and anger for those who drank alcohol with the excuse saying "They can't control their liquor like I can" But from what I see, it's actually factual that abstaining from alcohol actually improves lives. and maybe perhaps they'll improve mine too. I despise drugs with a passion. It turns people into thugs and criminals that will hurt and be a pain in the thighs of others. It's really sad and I now know why God really wants us to avoid such substances. I still don't understand tea, though but again...I hate having a burned tongue..lol

@@brantstock here is the text from JST Gen 9. Remember this is given to Noah and a translation of the text from Joseph Smith in modern days. --
JST Genesis 9:10-11, compare Gen 9:4-

10 But, the blood of all flesh which I have given you for meat, shall be shed upon the ground, which taketh life thereof, and the blood ye shall not eat.
11 And surely, blood shall not be shed, only for meat, to save your lives; and the blood of every beast will I require at your hands.
Take what you will from it. I think many people believe that the Word of Wisdom section about the meat "sparingly" can relate to this verse meaning that meat should only be eaten if necessary and not sparingly as in "not often" (as most commonly understood)

In the days of Joseph Smith, there was a good deal of controversy about meat, when to eat it and how much. The Lord clarified things when He revealed: "it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine" (D&C 89:13). In other words, the Lord disagreed with those who would only use meat in times of winter, cold or famine. Read that line again and see if it doesn't endorse the use of meat in other conditions.
Now, notice that I made a slight change. I removed the comma after the word "used" as it actually appears in our D&C. But the fact is that the comma didn't exist in the original revelation. It was added in 1920 when columns were added to the D&C. In actuality, the way I presented it is the way it was originally given. Without the comma.
This rendering now comes into better harmony with other passages, such as D&C 59:16, 1 Nephi 18:6, 1 Tim 4:1-3 and many others. Eating meat should be done sparingly. I think there is some room for interpretation there. But the Lord does not expect us to eat it only in times of cold or famine. In fact, He clarifies that it pleases Him when it is not.

    • @laurenharpster4454
      @laurenharpster4454 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@TheRealDonLayton The reason the comma did not exist in the original script, is because the word "only" meant the same thing as "except" back in those days. So it would have meant the same thing as "it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used except in times of winter, or of cold, or famine." The English language evolved, and thus the comma was inserted so modern readers could still understand the text with it's original meaning.

The Church is caught up in a technicality it can't ignore. This video clearly states that coffee and tea were banned due to their proximity and enabling effects of alcohol, yet coffee and tea today, are far less associated with the primary vice of alcohol. They say use common sense but when Coke, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and just about every diet soda on the planet is guzzled in abundance but a plain tea or coffee is classified as 'immoral' and placed on the graphic in the video beside a syringe...the Word of Wisdom is one of the most opaque doctrines in the church. You can cite stats on the addictiveness of coffee, tea, soda and all the other non-mentioned aspects that are quasi-covered in the code but they would be comparable to the stats regarding fast food, meat, and lack of exercise, which the Word of Wisdom is either moot on or is considered an afterthought.

Those other things are not in the official Word of Wisdom, but are in the spirit of this moral law, and there have been various general authorities that have stated to avoid such things, and to also exercise, Gordon B. Hinckley and Thomas S. Monson are two that come to mind right now, but not enough members think about this, just doing whatever they want or following the fad diets of the day which run counter to the Word of Wisdom. Hopefully more of this can come to light, especially with the great amount of research and personal testimonies of how following the spirit and letter of the Word of Wisdom that is available. I hope more members can realize this, and increase their odds of having better health and a longer life!

I've known some members of the Church that do, but I take your point. That is an interesting part of the Word of Wisdom. The Church's food production and distribution mechanisms provide meat products in addition to the other foods; these programs are supervised ultimately by the apostles and the president of the Church, so we know that God endorses such activity. For some people, that strikes them as incongruous. It may be that there is a better way of approaching things but people are not ready yet. There are many examples in the past of God having more to give His children but only giving to them in the measure for which they are prepared. So maybe one day we will consume much less meat.

Of course, meat and poultry are so filling and taste so good, so yeah, most of us eat more than we should, esp. with poultry these days (chicken is cheap-er), then meat (ground beef), then egg consumption prob. being "ok", but wild-caught fish and shellfish (esp. cod, trout, rockfish, canned mackerel and sardines, etc. price-wise, but salmon here and there still) should be a little bit more of a priority, def. beans, non-gluten grains, seeds, avocado/nuts somewhat, etc.

One of my biggest questions with the Word of Wisdom, that I've never been able to find an answer to, is whether drinking caffeinated soft drinks is ok? Are coffee and tea prohibited because of their caffeine content? If so, shouldn't caffeinated soft drinks be prohibited? I know plenty of members who drink loads of their favorite caffeinated soda, but would never drink a cup of coffee. Does anyone have any insight on this that can be backed up by church doctrine?

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Here are my thoughts: Doctrinally, the prophets have specifically stated that we should not drink coffee and tea, and that we should not misuse drugs. That means that, speaking in technicalities, caffeinated sodas are not prohibited. Excessive amounts of sugar are not technically prohibited. But there's a difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. I think that if we're truly seeking to follow God's will, we won't drink "loads" of a caffeinated soda and we won't consume excessive amounts of sugar. You could challenge people about their personal practices if you found yourself in a situation where it would be helpful, but inasmuch as the Church is able to draw a dividing line, people who drink caffeinated soda are not on the "No" side of the line.

In order to be temple worthy regarding the Word of Wisdom, the requirement is to abstain from alcohol, coffee, tea, smoking, and harmful drugs. We need to use caution in taking it upon ourselves to counsel others beyond those requirements. Bruce R. McConkie made the following enlightening comment: "There is no prohibition in Section 89 as to the eating of white bread, using white flour, white sugar, cocoa, eggs, milk, meat, or anything else, except items classified under the headings, tea, coffee, tobacco, and liquor. As a matter of fact those who command that men should not eat meat, are not ordained of God...Some unstable people become cranks with reference to this law of health. It should be understood that the Word of Wisdom is not the gospel, and the gospel is not the word of Wisdom. " He also quoted from President Joseph F. Smith warning against making the Word of Wisdom a "gospel hobby." Said President Smith: "We have noticed this difficulty--that saints with hobbies are prone to judge their brothers and sisters who are not so zealous in the one particular direction of their pet theory as they are. The man [or woman] with the Word of Wisdom only in his brain, is apt to find unmeasured fault with every other member of the church....and to look with distrust on his brethren and sisters who do not so perfectly live that one particular law. This feeling hurts his fellow servants and offends the Lord." I see some comments here that voice "concerns" over the choices others are making regarding the Word of Wisdom that are nothing more than veiled pride and criticism. It is not our right to dictate our own detailed interpretations to others regarding this law, yet I see this tendency increasing. You can find these teachings from Elder McConkie and President Joseph F. Smith in Mormon Doctrine under "Word of Wisdom" and also "Gospel Hobbies."

It is easy for our concern for others' eternal well-being to change into something less positive, and I agree that caution is warranted. I have found, even recently, that there are times when people misunderstand parts of the Word of Wisdom that seem obvious to me; one thing that always is helpful is to refer people to official statements from the Church, as supervised by living prophets. Among them are this recent article: churchofjesuschrist.org/study/new-era/2019/08/vaping-coffee-tea-and-marijuana. Granted, individual choices and accountability before God are still individual matters, and they're ultimately between people and God's authorized representatives like bishops.

Thank you for making this video! I am so grateful for the Word of Wisdom. Have any prophets we're apostles ever elaborated on the idea of eating meat sparingly? I think it is for us to decide after prayerful study. Verse 13 in section 89 is often overlooked. After many years of study, I have felt inspired to eat plants only (no meat, cheese or any animal products), because I am blessed to live where fruits, veggies and grains are plentiful. I don't judge others for eating meat, but I like the thought of pleasing the Lord through this simple act. Also, I reduce my risk of many 'chronic diseases' prevalent in modern society. Best of luck in your seeking♡

Maybe someday the prophets will put more emphasis on that part. Meanwhile, we are free to seek personal revelation on any subject and to try our best to follow God's will as we understand it. We don't always understand it as well as we would like, but trying is always worth it.

Hi...I know I’m a little late but there are many ways of quitting any vice you have by prayer. Having a substitute could also help, like for example hot chocolate or chocolate milk (My personal fave lol) but the best way of attacking it is by finding the source of it. Ask yourself, “Why do I drink coffee?” “What about it makes me drawn to it?” If it’s for you to feel/be more alert then there are ways around it. Try getting more sleep, exercising a bit more, have a well-balanced & drinking more water in your day to day life. I promise you, if you do this, you’ll won’t feel the necessity to drink coffee again. It might not work at first but little by little you’ll see a tremendous difference in your life. Good luck to you and have a blessed day!

This video actually kind of makes me sad in that it only lists the don't and not the do's. There is so much more to the word of wisdom and most of Latter-day Saints are really bad at following those parts. Otherwise areas highly populated with Latter-day Saints would be "Blue Zones" (The areas of the world with the lowest amounts of chronic diesease and highest life expectancy).

    • @charleskrauser

You're right, just like the Seventh-Day Adventists, who have a similar rule in their religion and more follow it, so one of their communities in California, in Loma Linda is considered one of the Blue Zones in the book by Dan Buettner. We could have that all over if more of us followed the whole Word of Wisdom, and what a cool thing that would be! Mega Blue Zone!!!

I would suggest that not everything that has benefits is beneficial overall. Faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ don't rely solely on what is known scientifically, though; we receive guidance from God's prophets and then seek to know truth directly from Him. When God tells us His will, we then have the choice of whether or not to follow it. For myself, I am more than content to abstain from coffee and alcohol, and my observations over the years lead me to have no doubts about God's wisdom.

When the Word of Wisdom was given by revelation on February 27, 1833, there was no such obesity epidemic among the membership of the Church as there is today or it would have been addressed specifically. People who largely consume ubiquitous & convenient overprocessed, high calorie foodstuffs & beverages full of chemicals, added sugar & dye instead of what's found plainly in a foodmart's produce section (in abundance & variety) pay a heavy price over time, such as an overall decline in systemic health & all too often a preventable premature death. Latter-day counsel re the specific perils of obesity would be a timely addendum to the spare text of Section 89.
