I remember a Christian friend of mine (not Mormon) once asked me how I could possibly believe in such an outlandish story. I asked him, "Don't YOU believe that Jesus walked on water, Moses parted the Red Sea, the earth was flooded, Lazarus was raised from the dead, Jesus was miraculously conceived, Jonah was swallowed by a whale, etc.?" There was an awkward pause and then he said, "touche!" I don't find the Joseph Smith story, or the stories in the Book of Mormon, more unbelievable than anything in the Bible.
I believe the Book of Mormon was translate by Joseph Smith. I don't know how the translation process worked exactly. And I don't really care that much. The book exists and it's a masterpiece. I've read it multiple times. There's an incredible amount of wisdom and knowledge in its pages. It will change your life...if you let it. I think most people are skeptical, but intrigued by the book. Read it. See what it's all about. It doesn't bite and you won't be forced to get baptized. If anything, it might make your life a little better.

I was a member for 24 years graduated seminary and institute, served a mission. Never heard of the urim and thummim described as similar to eyeglasses it was always described as two stones fixed to a breastplate. Only after I read the history of the church manuals (published by the church) did I learn about the ol' rock in a hat business. Please wake up and realise that this is a blatant contradiction to how the translation story was commonly taught for decades. Only now that the information is available and people are leaving because of false narratives is the church willing to admit the truth. These videos are more for you, members than they are for non-members. Most people couldn't care less because this has 0 impact on their life. It's to get your stories straight and conform to a common narrative so that the past can be white washed. I'm not here to slander or start arguments. Just a friendly reminder to think rationally and apply critical thinking to your spirituality.

Rather than being a contradiction, it's just more information. I think that some accounts were doubted more in the past, but now we know some more about it. This video only provides a few details, but much more of the accounts are available online now in our time when we have this great Internet technology. I agree, though, that there is plenty of room for rationality and critical thinking.

Yeah, God's ways are not man's ways. God used a donkey to speak to a prophet in the Bible. He used a brass snake on a pole to heal people from a snake bite. He had a man bath in a river 7 times to heal his leprosy. He spoke and the seas were calm. So, a stone in a hat is not too unusual given other stores in the Bible.

    • @positivetown9105

if he was translating gold plates with natural sun light, it would make sense to use a hat to help with the glare

      @jimjatos28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Agreed that a stone in a hat isn’t unusual when compared to other stories in the Bible.
And also agreed that God has the power to dictate whatever knowledge He wants to whomever He wants and in whatever manner He wants to dictate it.
What I, and many other former full time missionaries, take issue with is this was NEVER taught to us (the fact that Joseph often used his seer stone in a hat to translate). Very few members knew that this took place until very recently.
What bothers me isn’t how God would bring about the translation of an ancient record. It’s why the church that teaches that omission is a sin on par with dishonesty would actively hide this detail of the coming for of the BoM.
They taught a half-truth about it for many decades and that isn’t right nor can it be dismissed and ignored, especially since the church also claims to be the one and only true church on the earth today...yet it commits the sin of omission...
I guess things like murder (Nephi killing Laban) and lying and/or omitting certain facts (not teaching about the stone in the hat until they absolutely had to) are okay if ‘done for the Lord’.

@@jimjatos28 I am a convert. I was not raised in the church. I found out about it later. I found out about a lot of history when I dug deeper. We learn line upon line as we search diligently and are ready for the information. I don't think it was hidden from us. We are told to study and build our own testimonies.
The Church has a mission: bring others to Christ, redeem the dead, and perfect the Saints. The most important truths are that Christ came, atoned for us, God lives, Heavenly Father is our literal Father, which Church is headed by Christ, and the Book of Mormon is from God. The rest are secondary issues or questions. The primary questions is what gets us back home. After all I learned regarding the history of the Church it comes down to those primary questions, and my goal to return home. What do I need to go back to my Heavenly Father? I need to study the scriptures and strive to follow (and be like) Jesus Christ. The truth is there is no other Church to run to; there is no where else to go. As the scripture states, "Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." (John 6:68)

A question I often ask myself if lacking faith, is "Even if the Book of Mormon wasn't true, what would Joseph Smith's motives be?"
Seems to me that there can't be any bad motive coming from the Book of Mormon and the LDS church in general. Why would someone evil or a liar make something with so many good purposes? (charity, welfare, teachings of the importance of family, taking care of our bodies, respecting others, etc , etc , etc) Like the Bible says, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." The fruits of the LDS Church brings nothing but good not only religiously but personally too, the guidelines from the Church and Church leaders, if followed, will bring so much happiness and strength into personal and family lives

One motive I can think of is that it allowed Joseph Smith to take more than one wife.
I don't want to throw around accusations, but the revelation he received on polygamy was pretty strong, especially to his wife (and any Mormon wife who would object to polygamy):
And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, if any man have a wife, who holds the keys of this power, and he teaches unto her the law of my priesthood, as pertaining to these things, then shall she believe and administer unto him, or she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord your God; for I will destroy her; for I will magnify my name upon all those who receive and abide in my law (DC 132:64

Some bad motives would be money and power. While good things have come from the creation of the BOM, like any other organization bad things have come too. For example, not allowing blacks the priesthood until the 70s, Joseph Smith taking members land and selling it back them for a profit, Joseph stealing masonic handshakes, Joseph marrying his 14 year old nanny behind Emma's back, the Mountain Meadow Massacre, multiple accounts of the first vision, and many more. There are many good things to come of the BOM, but please don't blindly follow and say bad things have not come from it. Lots of resources online can help you learn more about your church and the TRUE history of it.

Go back to the simplicity of the GOSPEL and believe that JESUS can save you from the moment you believe in HIM until the end. That being said, meaning we don’t need another book to be saved. Okay so according to the churches website he used the seer stone exclusively and the plates weren't even in the room. The three witnesses of the plates all recanted later saying they didn't see the plates physically but spiritually. Martin Harris wasn't a family friend, he was related to Joseph and before he worked on the book of mormon he was in the congregation of the writer of the book "view of the hebrews". It was about written years before the book of mormon and was about native Americans were of Hebrew lineage. I hope that this helps at least one person see the truth. The church is made up. Read the new testament as a child and pray that God answer your prayer that it's true. Not a burning in the bosom but an actual answer. He gave me one and I know he will do the same for you.

Reading the comments, I think of how there will always be people who will use their time to go out of there way to shame & belittle what is good, uplifting, true & full of light. Many people of Christ's day were obsessed with Him & used there time to try & tear Him down. But you can't kick Him down. They thought they won when He was crucified, but He won because it was the way to His & all of our resurrection. Since Joseph Smith's day, people who love darkness have been persecuting, belittling, & trying to knock Christ's restored church down. If it were insignificant, they wouldn't bother. I even hear of other congregations, instead of spending that time where they can be talking about how to be loving & Christlike, using that time to belittle our Church. To me it seems like those insecure, jealous junior high girls who will turn others against & shame & belittle another girl who they feel threatened by because they don't feel as pretty or popular. If we're a false church, or if the Book of Mormon were a waste of time, than darkness wouldn't oppose this work, it would leave it alone. But the fruits of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are good, & Satan will use lies & half truths & tactics & unimportant human or earthly historical details to blind God's children from focusing on God's Gospel & saving power. We are all invited to turn to Jesus Christ who saves us & offers us direction, joy, peace, grace, & power. He shares it, not only in Jerusalem centuries ago, but today & to all of His children all over the world. I believe that with all of my heart. To those who are on the fence: there is nothing to lose if you believe that & it ends up not being true (at least your life will be filled with kindness, good works, love, & hope), but a lot to lose if it is true & you don't find out for yourself & follow Christ.

For many years, the Catholic Church WAS the Christian, supposedly based on Peter the Apostle. Little by little, other preachers came to realize that the Catholic church's teachings didn't follow the Bible, so they broke off from that church; many of them were killed for it. So the Church of Jesus Christ had to be restored. So really--and I don't know what church you belong to, if any--It's YOUR church that has moved away from the teachings of Jesus Christ. I could give you many examples, but I'll just give you one: There are now over 1,500 Christian churches today, all of them believing the Bible, and yet having differing doctrine.

"Joseph Smith, a 23-year-old farm boy with limited education, created a book with hundreds of unique names and places, as well as detailed stories and events."
"For when Joseph Smith translated, he had no notes whatsoever. In fact, his wife Emma recalled: “He had neither manuscript nor book to read from. … If he had had anything of the kind he could not have concealed it from me.” "God’s fingerprints are all over the Book of Mormon, as evidenced by its majestic doctrinal truths, particularly its masterful sermons on the Atonement of Jesus Christ." - Tad R Callister
The fact that Joseph Smith translated The Book of Mormon in 65 working days, with very limited education, in a single draft is simply a miracle! It's also a miracle to note that it's testifies so strongly of Jesus Christ, his great love, our purpose here on earth, and our eternal destiny! I know the Book of Mormon is true, and it testifies very strongly that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true!

@@oreoetcookiehuskyfur6018 I responded to your idea of "completeness" in a different comment chain, but I'll repost here under your comment. You had also referred to John's words at the end of Revelation, which is where I began, but then I gaev explanation about the Bible also. Here it is again:
I'd love to help you understand that passage from Revelation. It was written by John the apostle during his lifetime, which was in the first century A.D. The Bible was not compiled into a single volume until a couple of centuries later, so John was clearly referring to his own writing--the Book of Revelation. The last words of John read as follows: "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." (John 21:25) We can be very grateful that God has given us additional scripture.
As to the Bible being "complete", it's simply a collection of ancient writings based on what was available and considered holy at the time of compilation. Did you know that there are other versions of the Bible that contain additional books? You might not agree that those versions of the Bible are valid. Perhaps, though you've seen references in your own Bible to other written works that we don't have. Are you familiar with the Book of Jasher (mentioned in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18), the prophecy of Ahijah (mentioned in 2 Chronicles 9:29), and additional epistles from the apostles? There's more; you can see a full list in this Bible Dictionary entry: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bd/lost-books . Scholars did a pretty good job of collecting inspired writings, but the writings of the Bible indicate that the volume itself does not contain all of God's inspired word. Granted, it would be rather presumptuous for us to try to close God's mouth, anyway.

What would be disappointing would be if inaccurate history had been promoted as being valid. The Church has to be extremely cautious. Fortunately, these days we have the benefit of years of study and technology that makes it easier to conduct historical work and share the results with the world. The consistent message from the Church has been that Joseph Smith translated the gold plates "by the gift and power of God", as stated in the introduction to the Book of Mormon. The specifics of the process were evidently different at different times, based on extant secondhand accounts, but the details are far less important than our faith being exercised and rewarded. It's good to learn historical details, but it's important to seek and receive revelation form God and to live as a true disciple of Christ.

There are a lot of things that are potentially difficult to believe about any religion; many of Moses' experiences, for example, such as a burning bush that wasn't consumed or the parting of the Red Sea, or Jesus and Peter walking on water, could be difficult to believe. We don't expect anyone to believe in the Book of Mormon or the prophet Joseph Smith without compelling evidence. That evidence comes in the form of revelation directly from God, typically via the Holy Ghost. It's the only way to know religious truth and it's more fundamentally reliable than anything else, and most certainly compelling. When God tells us something, it's no longer hard to believe at all, even if our understanding isn't perfect yet, which it sometimes isn't. Other evidences abound, but they shouldn't be the basis for belief. Are you worried that people are being "scammed" by the Church of Jesus Christ? I'm a lifelong faithful member of the church. I never dreamed that I would write something contrary on something like this... This is all true except for the "seer stone" part. Joseph NEVER said that he used a seer stone. Early detractors, including the first anti-Mormon book, made that claim. The fact that some early members of the church began to repeat that claim doesn't make it true. If you think it through, this idea is very damaging to the overall account. What were the purpose of the plates if Joseph did not use them? Some church intellectuals really need to get back into proper sources, particularly to what the prophets have taught.

There are plenty of eye witness accounts to the rock in the hat trick. The church has even released photos of the rock that Smith used. It seems odd that the church would be forced to admit this concerning aspect of their past unless the evidence was overwhelming. These are not antimormon claims but confirmed historical facts.

Cliff Warren What part of using a seer stone is faith destroying? In the Book of Mormon itself it tells of an object called the Liahona which was prepared beforehand to lead Lehi and his family to the promised land. In the Bible Moses has a rod which the Lord cases to change into a snake which he uses before pharaoh etc. The seer stone, Liahona, and rod are tools that are used to help bring forth the work of God. The are of course other objects mentioned in the scriptures and I mention one more. In the book of Mosiah it mentions what it calls interpreters. It talks of seers and that these seers can look into these interpreters to discover things which are lost and interpret other languages etc. hmm.... Mosiah 8:13
One thing you have to remember about anti material is that they mix in truth with lies. Satan truthfully told Eve that if she partook of the forbidden fruit that she would become like God having a knowledge between good and evil and then mixed in the lie that she surely would not die. Now if someone wanted to mock other Christians they could say that Moses was a wizard etc, and try and make them fell embarrassed. We know that the priesthood of Satan is real in that Pharos survents also make snakes from their own rods, but of course God’s priesthood is more powerful and Moses rod destroyed the others. Satans counterfeits always come short of the real thing and never can stand against the true light of God.

If the LDS church would stop trying to cover up their sins and would stop trying to sell their best face to the world and if they would stop lying, and finally be humble enough to admit their guilt and confess and truly repent of their sins, then Jesus would finally be able to use that church in a beautiful way. But, they have shown that their pride is to great for them to allow this to happen... and pride is the greatest sin which all the churches of Jesus Christ suffer from and it prevents them from entering the kingdom of God.

However, some spirits since the time of Christ’s resurrection have already been judged and resurrected, as well. (The Bible talks about how many graves were opened after Jesus was resurrected.)

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." One of the most common messages in scripture is "ask, and ye shall receive". I have had many experiences in the Church of Jesus Christ that show God's hand in it. Whether the critics like it or not, these events were documented by numerous independent eyewitnesses. The book itself is bursting with ancient Semitic literary elements. Frankly it takes far more faith to believe that it was made up by an uneducated farm boy.

It is true the Book of Mormon has the writings of Isaiah, but that is about it. I hope you take the challenge to read and pray, maybe fact to know for yourself it is from God.
I did this myself. I read to probe it was from Satan. For it can only be of God or Satan. I know it is from God. No evil man could have ever written this scripture, and a good man would never use it to deceive.
Find out for yourself. Don't take my word for it. Ask God. He always answers a sincere and honest heartfelt prayer.

I want to laugh and cry at the same time . Like I almost thought this was joke at parts while remembering I used to be one of these in the comments thinking this is great... I can't believe the first visit was years before Moroni .. I kinda imagined it was like a immediate thing.. like gods only appeared to like how many people Moses.. brother of Jared .. few other people but yet god appeared to this guy with Jesus and didn't have anything to ask of him just wanted to stop by an tell him he is the chosen one to be the master of a cult and get many wife's ECT. .? And then years later like what it must be like having a chance to see God one day and him saying ur the chosen one and then just 5-7 years go by and nothing.. then suddenly now's the right time to go uncover my scripture that needs to be given to the earth and only takes 65 days to translate but yet god thinks we should wait few years to tell u where it is
    . ....
.. and being such a MVP god spent the time to light travel to see you in person yet jus sends his last prophet who couldn't pass down the collection of books of prophets before him to any one because of war and genocide and we want you to add to it and ya throw in the book of Abraham that will be the only text that u can share with the world the rest we need back I'm heaven so no one can ever verify the translations. But these few pages from the book of Abraham u can have to prove yourself truthfully translating them when one day egyptologist will see and confirm that Joe had it right but yet he actually was using a page from the book of the dead a polytheistic religion claiming it was a book from the bible and that's doesn't throw anybody off???!??

It sounds like you really need to keep thinking through things and praying to God. You're saying that your faith is suffering because you didn't learn all of the history accurately? That's a little odd, but don't be afraid of learning. Why would you refer to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a "cult"? Think about that a bit. Prophets in the Bible sometimes waited a long time before being asked to do certain works; Jesus Christ Himself was chosen before His birth but certainly known as the Savior since He was a child, and yet He didn't start His ministry until he was 30 years old. People make some common mistakes when considering the remaining papyrus fragments and come to incorrect conclusions about how Joseph Smith translated the Book of Abraham. If you want, I can give you some more information about that. The most important thing for you to do, though, is pray. Let Heavenly Father know that you're unsure about what to think. As we seek knowledge from Him through study and especially prayer, there are several things He does for us. First, he gives us knowledge, bit by bit and piece by piece. There are some things we don't learn for a while, but that's normal in life. Second, He will reassure us that while we still have some unanswered questions, things are still okay. Please do give it some prayer.

Samuel (Old testament) was only ten years old when God called him, but didn't give him ANY assignments until he'd grown up. Judge the Bible the same way you judge the BofM. There are reasons God sent angels rather than going himself: The angel Gabriel (Noah) to Mary. I'm guessing you're NOT a Bible scholar or reader....

      @00Fisher00 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Are you simply ignoring the physical evidence that is there? It's easy to pretend something doesn't exist if you close your eyes. But Christians don't rely on physical evidence, we know that "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) The vital spiritual evidence that we have is the witness from God through the Holy Ghost. That's enough for anyone, and no other evidence can compare to it.

The Bible is wonderful. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ study primarily from the King James Version. The Bible teaches us to seek revelation from God, and in the Bible we read the words of Paul, who said in 2 Timothy 3:16 that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness". In John 21:25, the apostle John's final words were, "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." It is a wonderful gift when God gives us scripture. In the early days of the people of Israel, they had the words of Moses in the five Mosaic books. As years passed, more prophets were inspired to write, and their writings have been included in the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible when possible, though it's clear that we don't have all of those writings. In our time, God has preserved a special record for us that also contains scripture. The Book of Mormon testifies powerfully of Christ and brings us closer to God. Paul was right; all scripture is good. You can study from the Bible of Book of Mormon at ChurchOfJesusChrist.org/study/scriptures. I hope you do discover the Book of Mormon for yourself so that God can bless you through the inspired writings it contains.

"Urim and Thummim" (interpreters spectacles) that the Lord provided were the correct means of translation and that is in scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 10:1. "Urim and Thummim" is mentioned in scripture in several other places as well.
In my opinion the rock-in-a-hat story comes through "scholarship" which doesn't necessarily make it correct. 2nd Nephi 27:16 demonstrates how scholarship is flawed through what amounts to citation cartels.
Prioritizing Prophetic revelation over scholarship has always been the Way.
