Choosing Between Good and Evil | Now You Know

  • Every day we all have choices that need to be made. Many of those choices do not have any lasting significance, but there are plenty that do. These choices-the decisions between right and wrong-have more serious consequences than, say, what color shirt we wear. Agency, sometimes referred to as moral agency or personal agency, is the ability each person has to choose right or wrong-or, put another way, the ability to either follow God or not.
    Agency was given to every person as a gift from God. The ability to direct our own lives and make our own choices is one of the greatest gifts God has given us. Just as physical choices have physical consequences, such as getting burned if you get too close to a fire, spiritual choices have spiritual consequences. It is not possible to make a choice without facing its inevitable consequence.
    Our purpose in this life is to learn, grow, improve, and progress, with the ultimate goal of returning to God’s presence. Personal agency allows us to participate in the learning and growing process that is essential to becoming better and more like our perfect example, the Savior Jesus Christ.

      @@janaprocella8268 I tell people that I love the Bible and all of God's word. Biblical passages encourage us to study all books of scripture. For example, the final words of John in his gospel book were, "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen." (John 21:25) The apostle Paul said that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness". We embrace all scripture and we invite people to explore scripture that God has revealed in the modern era. Like anyone, you can know for yourself of their truth by asking God sincerely in prayer. He has promised to answer you by the power of the Holy Ghost.

    With agency opposition is required. We have always had agency, even in the pre mortal life. However we needed to experience opposition with our physical bodies to progress and become like our Heavenly Father. Opposition can come in different forms. It can come from natural physical occurances, thru our choices and others choices. We can experience the bitterness of sorrow to appreciate the sweetness of joy. The greatest people I have met and known in my life are those who have experienced such great hardships and still chosen to follow Jesus Christ. Just as Christ Himself did for us.

    This is true, This is truth, I go so far as to say that it is the 1st and greatest gift from our heavenly father, besides our very existence of course. It is real but unfortunately until we try to come out from under the influences that are swirling about us we don't realize generally that this is possible, to choose other than what we have already known.

      "everything happens for a reason" isn't doctrine, but rather the real question is, is God's plan sufficient to provide salvation for all of us in spite of our endless choices and actions, right and wrong? Yes it is, and inherent in that is the ability of these things happening do not prevent our growth and development, but are a critical component for it.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People say "everything happens for a reason" to suggest that everything is good even if it's bad, and there's some truth to that, but I don't think that phrase is ever used in scripture or has ever been taught by prophets. It's not quite hitting the center of the target of truth. What is doctrinal is that we are free to choose righteousness even in during trials, and going through challenges always provides opportunity for us to increase our faith.

      Paul said to the Romans, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” I think we can take the perspective that everything that happens is for our good. We decide how we react to those things that happen to us. “Man does not simply exist but always decides what his existence will be, what he will become the next moment. By the same token, every human being has the freedom to change at any instant.” Victor Frankl

      I think they are the same. We are free to make moral choices in our life.

    • @Kayscastle
      @Kayscastle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we are better off referring to agency as "moral agency," and "the ability to choose and act," because when we call it "free" this can sometimes make agency sound like it doesn't have consequences. But it's not free in that sense of the word; it comes at the price of consequences.

    • @jomiar309
      @jomiar309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that they are different names for the same thing. "Free agency" emphasizes that we are free to choose, while "moral agency" emphasizes that we choose between "right and wrong behavior" or good and bad choices (see dictionary definition of moral).

    • @arthursaulda8626
      @arthursaulda8626 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The term free agency is commonly used, and has traditionally been interpreted as meaning that individuals have the ability to choose their actions freely.many church leaders have pointed out that the term "free agency" should not be interpreted to mean that agency does not have consequences, but rather that agency is fraught with risk and choices (the result of the exercise of agency) determine eternal destination.some church manuals avoid the term "free agency" and instead refer simply "agency" some church leaders favor the term "moral agency".

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Free agency" is another term for the same thing but potentially gives inaccurate ideas, so it's discouraged. "Freedom of choice" is another synonym. "Moral agency" puts a good emphasis on the important aspect of the choices we make.

    Choice is not agency. The power to act is agency. An agent is one who has the power to act in behalf of another, themselves, or an organization. If I choose but don’t act or if I am act upon, I didn’t exercise agency. We exercise our agency when we choose to act by making and keeping covenants. That’s why it is “moral agency” and not “free” agency. We are not free to do what we want. We are obligated by covenant to act in moral ways. Adam and Eve didn’t simply make a choice. They had to act.

    The problem is when people use their free agency, others, especially the religious will make judgements and assumptions. One non-LDS pastor once said that atheists are deliberately self decieving themselves and do not actually have a different method of drawing their own conclusions. Many LDS judge that apostates have chosen evil and never consider that perhaps "good" has let them down.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      People can be harsh judges at times, and it isn't helpful. That's why we were counseled to not judge people unjustly like that. I tend to think that as we get older, and make more bad choices ourselves and learn from them (which isn't necessarily a given), we become more understanding and less prone to condemning others.

    Is it part of your "God's plan" when something horrific happens to someone? For example. Is it part of your God's plan when someone who is kind, loving and caring gets mauled to death by a mountain lion? Or if someone where to torture this hypothetical person to death?

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is part of God's plan that we experience natural difficulties, including pain, sickness, hardship, and death. There are very good reasons why he allows us to experience these things. It is also part of God's plan that we have agency, as described in this video. Sometimes people use that agency to harm others. There are very good reasons why God allows this, also. Despite all of the difficulties--sometimes excruciating pains--and injustices we face in life, our mortal lives are only a small part of our eternal existence. As we learn to use our agency well, we find greater peace and happiness in this life and we prepare ourselves for a much longer-lasting joy. God does everything that can be done to provide us with that eternal joy and peace.

  • @benhoward3102
    @benhoward3102 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's a predetermined plan that knows what I'll choose with my freedom? So how can anyone choose right or wrong if God knew what you would do anyway? Example: God planned on Adam eating the apple, told him not to, knew he would, but punished him for what was already planned???

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no plan to make us choose anything; that wouldn't be giving us a choice at all. However, God does know us very well. Even here on Earth, there are many times when one person comes to know another so well that they can predict many of their choices; just because someone else knows what we will choose on occasion doesn't mean we don't have the choice. God knows us far, far better, and again, we still have every choice even when He knows what we'll choose.
      The Fall of Adam was an important step in God's plan, and it enabled Adam to learn and grow. There is much to learn about that topic if you desire.

    The freedom of choice is a very powerful freedom. This is why evil exists, and why God isn't an overbearing butthole. Every human has the gift of discernment through an internal compass. They have the freedom to choose whether they want to listen to this compass or not. Many ignore this internal divine compass and do what they "want" to do regardless of how it will affect others. However, your choices will determine how well your life and afterlife goes. There will be trials and tribulations in every life. They are but tests of sorts. Methods to learn and grow. What do you choose?

      Don't be so quick with a knee jerk reaction. I am skeptical about some of the LDS teachings, but it is worth hearing them out. Even if they were from the devil, even Jesus sat, ate and made conversation with the enemy, with tax collectors... With anyone. The only thing about this particular video is when they suggest that we were all with God, before creation of the earth. Yet if we really pay attention to the Word of Jesus and in the Old Testament there may be hints that point to this. After all, Jesus came to gather his sheep. Think about that. He came here to gather his lost sheep. That would imply that the sheep were first NOT lost. Then they became lost. Then he was sent by his Father to gather the lost sheep.
      Peace be with you.

      God could reincarnate if he wanted, he is God after all... Couldn't he? You would place a limit on the power of God? You will dictate the boundary to Him? Maybe he could make reincarnate as a snake? God could raise people from the dead. Its kind of creepy though, to raise the dead when you know we are meant to be born again of the Spirit... Sadly people confuse being born again with repenting... So, they say they are "born again" but they really mean that they repented of their old ways. Its not the same thing.
