      Mary, hi! 🤗💐 first of all, let me apologize for such a late reply! 50% of the comments I replied to earlier... my replies were erased... gone! So, I do apologize for being so late in getting back to you! My leonis spiked for the first time during the winter and into early spring, but nothing ever continued. One small bud started to develop but it blasted and now the spike is being absorbed. So... first time bloomer woes or am I getting something wrong. I will only know the answer to that question when it tries again. The didieri, I have a little more hope now that I have seen Ed's video, because his spiked sooner than mine did, so... seeing his bud form... I have a little more hope for the same to happen to mine, just a little later. Thank you so much for watching, Mary! Again, I am sorry... I was not aware that YT had this reply glitch until I went to check Studio one more time! 🌸

    I have Angraecum didieri. I bought it on a mount, but took it off because it didn’t seem to be doing well. I have it it a clay pot with seedling potting mix. It’s really doing great now. We learn by doing and paying close attention to the orchid. You do a fantastic job of knowing your orchids. Thanks for sharing.🤗🌴🥀

      @NinjaOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Shirley 😃💐 I can just imagine how your didieri is loving that set up 👍🏼 has it bloomed for you yet? do you keep the clay pot in a saucer of water to keep the root tips from desiccating on the dry clay? or is that not a problem? Curious to know, and if you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I have wondered about having angreacums in clay pots, if one day I get more little ones, but cannot afford the pricey orchitops anymore. Thank you so much for watching, Shirley 🌸 have a wonderful day 🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids I have had it a year,and it really was very unhappy mounted. It’s doing great in the clay pot, and has bounced back. Has not bloomed yet. I have it in my fish tank right now, so it’s getting plenty of humidity. No problem with roots sticking on the pot. There’s no catch pot under it. It sits on pebbles. It’s still a baby plant, and got set back when on the mount.

    Hi Nina, great video. I had a didieri once, it decided it would not live with me, it turned all yellow and brown after I repotted it and I haven't tried again yet. I have leonis and sesquipedale var. augustifolium (supposedly smaller narrower leaves) idk. Those are doing fine after repotting. That didieri was the fussiest orchid I've ever had. At least I know what I did wrong with my phal. schilleriana but I have no clue what the didieri needed or didn't need. I don't think I fertilized it even. I want to have another one in the future but I want to make sure I'm not gonna kill it first. Lol. Thank you again. Take care lovely lady🌞🌿🌺🦸‍♀️🌻

      Got my first didieri last November. It was a beautiful specimen, blooming size. I promptly repotted it into a wooden basket and it died in 2 weeks😱! The leaves just fell off and that was that. Since I really liked the plant and my pride was hurt because of it's rapid demise I was determined to find another one after I did more research. I already knew that it should thrive in my environment. I also knew that it would do best for me in an open basket. So, in order to avoid the whole repotting issue, I started looking for vendors who were selling basketed plants that were already acclimated to my Florida climate. Well, in January, I found even better than that. I went to an orchid sale hosted by a major nursery that included multiple vendors. One of the guest vendors was Pow-Pow orchids from Germany. Since the plants were coming from another country they were all bare rooted and yes they had didieri for sale. Yay! Didn't have to worry about disturbing the roots.😄 From my research I learned that it's suggested that you wait a week to 10 days before watering after potting didieri up which is what I did. It seems to have adapted well to the basket and is growing new roots. From my experience this little fellow can get sufficient moisture from the air in high humidity environments. I just watch the roots. If they look plump, scaly and white then I know it's good 👌😄

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Darcy 🦩🤗💐 I would need to know more in order to help troubleshoot. Airy but humid mix....basically, access to humidity without the roots not having air circulation around them. Seaweed and a bit of CalMag to begin with, and seeing as I over did mine when it arrived, I would suggest 100ppm in total ... 60ppm of CalMag and 40ppm of seaweed and that every 2 weeks with plenty of flushing in between. From what I understand, they do like it wet but the wet is humidity wet and not wet around the roots , no air wet, if that makes sense. I am reaching, because I am not sure what your set up was. It is possible that your's was also a weak plant. Possibly a recent import and maybe received at the wrong time of year, transport shock etc. If you would like me to pinpoint other possibilities, let me know with a few more details. When did your's arrive into your collection, time of year? What media was it in when it arrived? How was the root system on arrival? Where the leaves dark green and plump? etcetc.... what media did you pot it up in? Thank you for watching, Darcy! If I can be of any help... you know the drill 😘🌸

And it's exciting to see a first spike, even if it doesn't bloom. It's a nice sign for the bright future :) But that's one slow growing orchid. It's almost discouraging with those that they seem like they're not making any progress, but in reality they are. Fingers crossed it continues to do as well if not better in the future! Hi!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼😍 they are the most unique roots, that is for sure! Fully agree with you... a first spike is a great sign for the next stage of maturity of an orchid, so I am happy to see it, and super curious to see what it will do. My leonis grew a first time spike over the winter but it never bloomed, blasted the first bud, and is now absorbing the spike, so... until it doesn't do it again, I won't know if it wasn't ready to bloom or if I was doing something wrong. But... again, first spike 🙌🏼 thank you so much for being here again 😍 you have yourself a wonderful day as well 🌸

    I can confirm some datapoints that were spoken of. I just lost an Angrecum didieri. It was growing in a skylight in my bathoom (so it would get more humidity). It was doing great while I was watering it solely with RO and rainwater. When I switched over to tap water, there was a slow and steady decline, where leaves turned brown and shed due to too much calcium being present in my tap water. Additionally, the skylight got quite hot in the summer time and burned up the leaves, so it definitely doesn't like it too hot.
    After obtaining my new Ang. didieri, I'm going to try a new growing spot for it (and all my other angrecoids) under a grow light, and I'll only use RO/rainwater.
    Thanks for the helpful advice! A lot of my issues with my poor late Angrecum now make perfect sense!

      Hi Sid 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here 🤗 I appreciate you sharing your experience with this orchid. It certainly seems to hate anything that remotely resembles fertilizer or supplements, at least with how I am attempting to grow it! As you addressed the subject of water, maybe this video in my Orchid Lingo series is of interest to you th-cam.com/video/ShINQgrZqvc/w-d-xo.html its about water, and I address the tap water subject in it. I find it interesting, although sad, that your tap water caused a problem... I mention that in the linked video, but I am glad that you figured out what happened, also with the sun influence being to strong. Since this video aired, I have as yet to bloom mine, it appears to be growing well, slow, but well, and it tried 3 spikes in one go, which are still green... the one in this video dried up eventually. So, I am anticipating the 3 that have not moved beyond showing themselves, to also dry up. As long as I manage to get the leaves to grow without fertilizer burn, that is a great start... then I can focus on more light, without direct sun. Certainly a challenging little orchid, considering that I can get other angraecoids to bloom 😬 well... I will have to exclude the leonis 🙄😬 thank you so much for watching! Once again, welcome!! 🌸

      🌸🥷🏼 Sherrii San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 thank YOU for watching and I am glad that it gave you some pointers for your elephantinum!! Because my set up was geared to my dry climate, I lost one of my didieris this summer to stem rot! Too much moisture around the roots, which was great for my dry climate, but this year I had 70% humidity and higher for the longest duration, so everything was too wet and stem rot set in! Upsetting, but I learned from that and am slowly adjusting other orchids to a less water retentive semi hydro set up, just in case this trend continues. YOU, however, enjoy growing that gorgeous elephantinum! Love me anything angraecoids, big, small, medium... they are all amazing orchids 👍🏼👍🏼 hope you are having a beautiful day 🌸🥷🏼🫶🏼❤️🌸

Unfortunately, I messed up with the fertilizer dose, I think, and a leaf is dying back fully even though I cut the tip off before it spread too far, well... my didieri will look a little lop sided, but as long as it is alive, I will take a lop sided didieri 😅Thank you so much, Raf, for watching! HI! 🤗💐 I have never dared to put this one into SH... that is why I opted for an airy but humid mix to make sure that whatever roots grow won't die. The interesting part will be to see how the one root is going to 'behave' once it reaches the saucer that always has water in it. I would like to have a water root on this one, because then I can stop with the risky misting around the base. I would hedge a guess that maybe it was the fertilizer that was too much for yours'. The brown leaf tips at the bottom of mine are proof that I was trying too hard to establish it quickly and it resulted in fertilizer burn. Thankfully I caught it in time and stopped the process and thankfully, it did not progress to the point of loosing the leaves. Perhaps, if you try another one, start with an airy mix in a pot that is not enclosed completely and see how it performs... hopefully getting a root to seek out the water. Thank you so much for watching this video!! Have a wonderful evening 🌸

      Hi there 🥰💐 thank you so much for going back and watching this video! Well, the spike in this video never continued to develop and turned brown. Now I have 3 bumps on my didieri... it is trying again 🙌🏼 the question is, will any of them progress, because I have some seriously adverse conditions in my grow space. It may be another situation of the spikes aborting because of the situation this orchid finds itself in. I am not giving up hope though, and the orchid is still alive 🙏🏼 that, is the most important thing. A year, huh? I know that they take ages... and if the one year mark is something I can take into account, then, I have hope that the temperatures will rise before they abort once again. 😬 really appreciate your time, and thank you so much for your comment! Have a wonderful evening 😍🌸

    Someone has a thing for African orchids, why is that? 🤣 😉 😘 At least the Angraecums have decent foliage, unlike those Aerangis, the foliage on those always looks iffy even though it is perfectly healthy. I'm crossing my fingers it still decides to bloom even if it is out of season. I think it is important to remember that how we grow them in cultivation isn't the same as the wild and some orchids are capable of blooming well "out of season" in cultivation without it being a sign of a problem.
    So any time frame on the AfriOrchid arrival? You've got me excited to see what you got.
    And totally unrelated, that one orchid that was supposed to be a Catasetum that might be a Lycaste, what's going on with that? If it is a Lycaste, one would expect to see bloom spikes on it around now. After not killing the one I got from Fred Clarke I bought a no ID single bulb, it has two "somethings" developing. One I believe is a bloom, one I know is a new growth. And I have a Sudmerlycaste locusta coming from Ecuagenera. Not sure how that one will do, worth a try. Green bloom that supposedly smells like apples, yes please.

      Don Miguel 😍💐 howdy doody! I do have a thing for anything Out of Africa 😁 you are so right that the aerangis always look a little dodgy... and I will include my Plectrelminthus caudatus in that category... despite starting to grow well on the root front, the leaves look like they have a fungus, and now that my air is drying up, it seems to be spreading. It is growing new leaves, but they are now showing that sign of stress as well, and no amount of copper fungicide or garlic water is helping to stop it from happening. I think that my lack of humidity is making those cells collapse and then slowly the leaves die off. What I need to have happen is, for it to grow faster than the current trend 😕 I have no idea about the ETA of AfriOrchids... they do not state that in any correspondence, if I were to guess, 4 weeks, but it all depends on how other orders are being paid for, and where the bottleneck for that is. I don't want to ask, when I get an invoice from the german nursery that is supervising the EU distribution, then I will know approx 1 week to go. My so called Catasetum / Lycaste has matured the new growth into a massive bulb, same as the ones prior, but it still has the leaves on it, so.... I still have no idea what I am dealing with. atm it is indoors on the floor by the glass in the dining room. If I am dealing with a Lycaste, I am hoping to keep the roots cooler by it staying on the marble floor. I am expecting the leaves to drop, but they are still lush and green. LOVE green blooms, LOVE the smell of apples... that is a winner!! 🙌🏼👍🏼 Have yourself a wonderful day, Michael! Thank you so much for watching 😘🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids my Lycaste kept its leaves through the entire winter, they didn't yellow and fall until the bloom spikes appeared. The new growth on it is off to the races, I don't remember it being this big this early last season. Of course, my FDK After Dark is also HUGE and it is only May.

      this is very interesting to read! Lycaste keeping it's leaves... well... I would like to see a new growth but a possible bloom would be nice too, then we know what is going on and what it is! Right now, it is needing more water than it ever did before, despite the bulb being fully matured. Roots are nuts and growing into the reservoir 😅 My FDK... lagging behind your's.. only just starting to split the lower leaves. I am so behind the trend on other collections 😅
