    Knock around my plants this morning and then I see some black mould. Two of them leaves fell off the bottom cleaned it all up and put it back in its pot. Is it anything to do with the lava sink? I don’t know if you can tell me, please I don’t wanna lose my plants, how often do you think I should water? I never know does lava rock need a lot of water or not? That is the question thanks Nina catch you soon.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      HI Andrea 😍💐 please know that, lava rock is not the reason for black mould. High humidity is and mould of any kind can manifest itself no matter the media. Now, it does not happen as often when using lava rock compared to using bark, but if there is any form of decay in combination with high humidity, mould can happen. Older Phalaenopsis leaves will drop, especially when the orchid has been in active growth and absorbed the lower leaves. That is normal, so what I am guessing from what you are describing, is, your lower older leaves were in the process of being absorbed, this causes the cell structures to either dry out, or as they decline, the humidity was high and the moisture was absorbed by the drying off of the older leaves, like a sponge. Reduce your watering, or reduce your humidity. Your orchids should be watered when the lava rock dries out ... depending on your conditions, as the season changes, keep an eye out on how the lava rock dries out. For the coming weeks, you may need to just give your orchids a drizzle of water at the surface of the pot only, or if you prefer, then set them in a saucer to absorb the water and leave them to dry out. Please use Hydrogen Peroxide 3% with a cotton swab and dab the stem of that orchid with it to avoid more of the spores starting a bigger problem. After you have done that, wait 5 minutes and go in with a dry tissue to wipe the remaining Hydrogen Peroxide off ensuring that the area dries out faster. And, please keep me posted if you have any further concerns. I hope that, otherwise you are having a beautiful day, lovely lady 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Great tips and comments!! So many miniature orchids I find are short lived blooms, except a few, many are fragrant in the mornings, some all the time, and yet others only at night. 🌛I mainly grow for the blooms, not so much for scent so I'm not always sniffing them for scent. 😅 I usually find out when its the only bloom in the case that it has a scent, still others I will occasionally give them a sniff or two and find out. 👃 Hope your weekend was enjoyable...mine was so so..Fluff always into stuff she knows not to do but just wants attention or food, food being the top of her list! 😂 P.S. you need to find some of the yellow ground orchids. Here most are short lived blooms. Yours look Awesome though!!

      🦤🦅😍 Wingman! Hi!! Responding from my phone, so if there are any typos, please forgive me 😵‍💫 I love the miniature orchids. Just their growths and then the chubby roots and pseudobulbs, when they pull through or just grow well, there is such a sense of tenacity with these little ones which I thoroughly enjoy experiencing! My weekend through to this morning was ⛈️⛈️🌊🌊🚣🏼‍♂️🚣🏼‍♂️ 🏊🏼‍♀️🏊🏼‍♀️there is some sun on the patio atm, but its a small tease before the next onslaught! Have some shorts to post from someone, once I get my power back. I don't want to waste data while not being able to use wifi 😣 the past 4 days have also had the dogs go delulu and getting into things they should NOT be doing.. the only one that has had a great time is Xyliano, because he was out more than he was in. Might as well... while all things were shut down to avoid major flooding indoors, he was out of his cage. Mop and bucket were my main tools.... damp bed because of the humidity... its been horrendous. BUT!!!! My daughter came home safe every single day and THAT, to me, was the blessing of all blessings throughout these past days 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼 going back to do some cleaning... footprints and mud... not a good thing to be spreading around 🫣 wishing you a much much better day than your weekend... no more so so ... more of woohoo!! 10:57 When I saw that the aphyllum made the list, I heard Darth Vader inside my head yelling, "Noooooo...!" 😱 Two weeks is still a pretty good amount of time to enjoy them. It probably makes you appreciate them even more. 16:00 First time for me to hear of an orchid that smells like licorice. I love that stuff because it's such a unique flavor. I had a bunch during my trip to Iceland in 2019, but then my uncle told me that ammonia is added for flavor which kind of put me off. Not A-D, but my new Gastrochilus japonicus bloomed at the end of August, but it was for only about a week. I heard some flowers are very sensitive to water, but I risked soaking the orchid since the health of the plant was more important to me. Maybe the vanilla orchid will make the list! 18:53 Thank you for making this video. 😁 I wasn't expecting a shout out so I guess I'm a little late to the party. 🤭

      Hi Joe 😍💐 the short lived bloom duration of the aphyllum, definitely makes me stop and sit right by the orchid to look at them. That is where I take my breaks during the days that it is bearable outside. As during that time, it is usually super windy on the patio because the winter and spring temps make the weather super volatile, as one wrestles with the other... one not wanting to let go, and the other is saying... 'my turn!' Pretty much what is happening on the patio right now. It is blowing an absolute gale out there with a wall of water, so... the power may go out at any minute 😵‍💫 keep me updated on your japonicus and your vanilla orchids' bloom duration. Especially when the japonicus blooms again because then we need to see if it doesn't last longer. It should, but time will tell and I would love to know! 😊 thank YOU so much for commenting on the short lived bloom topic... it put a smile on my face when I read your comment, because BINGO! 😃 stay tuned for part 2, which if all goes well, I will be able to post at the end of this week! I so appreciate you and the support you so kindly provide here! Thank you, Joe! 🙏🏼 wishing you a great start to the new week 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good morning, Sunshine❤️ from Spain where the patio is getting hammered with rain! I am happy that our area is getting drenched like this... however, my power may go off at any time, that is the downside. Most of the orchids are outside, out of their masks, and getting nailed / flushed. I had flooded pots this morning and if anyone was looking at a figure in the wee hours of the morning, fussing around with plants while also getting soaking wet, then .... I am ready for that straight jacket 😂 a stark contrast to your grilling, which I bet turned out delicious!! BBQ for one, that is what I call treating yourself for yourself. You are so smart! And just this morning I found myself having to think out of the box. I just had to bring all of my orchids indoors. I previously hung my vandas in the windows after soaking them overnight. I found that they look much better after having that long soak vs 15 min soaks in the morning and evening. But in my nice and new house, I see all of this water dripping onto the windowsill and the wood molding on the floor and thought... this won't do. Last winter I took the drastic measure of putting them in moss and pulled them out when they could be him outdoors with their roots exposed. Only two of them suffered any damage (one a great deal, and one only in a minor way, and the other four did just fine. But I love the look of my wild babies hanging in the windows. So outside box thinking is needed indeed.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      HI, lovely lady! 😍 💐I can fully understand that flooring, and anything that would accumulate water droplets, ... it just wont do in the long term. And while we want aesthetics to reign supreme with our orchids, sometimes for a temporary solution we have to forfeit the aesthetics so as to cover the needs of the orchids AND protect our indoors. I have 2 suggestions, without knowing anything about your indoor distribution... bear with me if what I propose is not going to cut it for you, but perhaps it can brainstorm an intermediate solution: How about some of the plastic storage totes positioned under your vandas, to catch the drip? They could also have the soaking water in them and you just raise the vandas up above them to let them drip dry? or, a garbage bag around the roots and you mist into the garbage bag. Leaving a little knick in the corner at the bottom to allow the water to drain slowly. This would also raise the humidity for the roots, if indoor heating causes the humidity to drop. Or, a combination of both... the totes at the bottom to catch the drip and half a garbage bag to catch the dripping roots between the orchid and the windowsill, with the end of the garbage bag directed toward a tote that will catch the run off so as not to let it land on the floor. 🤔 if garbage bags are too tacky, how about a long stretch of clear plastic sheet that painters use? Which can be tacked on to the glass panes and easily cleaned / removed next year. I don't know if this essay gave you anything to work with. I hope there is a nugget that you can use and make work for the coming months 🙏🏼 thank you so much for being here! I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Sooo... I had this urge to get a really cute little orchid I saw on eBay, that I knew really NOT A THANG about. Very dangerous to not know... It's a miniature.. like extra tiny And it turns out it's flower spike can reach up to about 3ft or one meter long. And pendant. It can have over 100 blooms... But here's the kicker.... The blooms open up for ONE DAY. LMAO I couldn't believe it and I have this plant literally smaller than a couple blades of grass that has to have 3 plus ft below it and then also... Just for me to maybe witness its blooms for a day or two days. Classic example as to why never to get orchids you don't know about. And why it's so important to do your research. nice video!- Pteroceras longicalcareum- -L
