Why Did My Orchid's New Growth Fail? 🤔 It's Not Black Rot! Environment Tips! #ninjaorchids
#orchids #orchid #orchidcare
I explore the causes of new growth failure in orchids, focusing on a specific issue that mimics black rot but has different underlying causes.
Learn about:
Factors contributing to new growth failure: Low temperatures, high humidity, low light, and nutrient deficiencies (especially calcium).
The role of moisture: How excess moisture around the growing point can lead to decay.
Preventing new growth failure: Strategies for optimizing light, temperature, humidity, and airflow.
Identifying and addressing the issue: How to distinguish this type of failure from black rot. #orchideenpflege #orchideen #orquideas #tips #tipsandtricks #tricks #tutorial #blackrot #garden #beginners

      🦤🦅😍 Wingman!! Howdy doody! Thank you so much for watching, my friend! I have to say that, I am frustrated that I do not have the chance to stop this from happening 🙄 hoping that 'one day' will come sooner rather than later, or else the stock is going to be gone and I will only have footage of the past to work with. 😬🥲 yeah... the take care... I am trying, Robert, I really really am. My body is having none of it, and a personal pet peeve of mine is hands on walls... well, I make myself lean against walls when walking from one area to the other because I cannot stand having any chance of hand prints on walls. Not that my hands are dirty, but the same area, touched over and over again will leave marks. Thanks to my grandma, I have this pet peeve ... she hated it when anyone touched her walls 😅 I hope you are taking care as well and thank you so very much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    The exact same thing happened with my hoya. It had a serious mealy bug infestation and i really had no choice. However. It was cooler temps and when i did it, to dry, the sun was up, but i left it outside until just after the sun went down. And then it got much much cooler. I also think that ethyl alcohol, aka rubbing alcohol, is also much harsher than isopropyl, in my opinion. I ahd this problem eith ethyl alcohol and cooler temps. And how kong it takes to apply, or if re applied, can cause issues. Cause you dont want the leaves having a continuous colling affect. In my case, it was a massive plant and it was probably reapplied to the same leaves many times over the process of about 15 mins. Good tip and i agree.

      @NinjaOrchids วันที่ผ่านมา

      Laura, hi 😍💐 100% with you on the evaporating cooling effect of rubbing alcohol being used in the same area on a regular basis, compared to isopropyl (which we don't get here). So when I went overboard out of frustration, and saw the damage caused by excessive rubbing alcohol, on a hot day then the amount of time the alcohol took to evaporate, cooling the cells down... I had to put this video out seeing as I talk about garlic alcohol a LOT. I still swear by the mixture, but NOT to drown the structure in it 🥲 hope you are doing well, lovely lady! Thank you so much for watching this video and your feedback 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Would it be okay to use seaweed on my rootless orchid? It is the wrong time of year for sure but I'm so scared I'm going to lose it and it is my actual favorite.. I mean it is in theory. I've never seen it bloom but the blooms and the idea of it is the one I'm looking the most forward to of any. And also I have an Aerangis that has two little nubs and two poking out of the stem.. but the two poking out have been in that state for a long time. Couple months. Would this be a good situation to try it? More so for the Aerangis probably cause it actually has a nub. But both are in dire situations and I wanna help somehow!

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids วันที่ผ่านมา

      😍Hi Laura 💐 absolutely yes, however, at a very weak concentration. If you think of black breakfast tea and make the color of your seaweed concentration 'barely visible' as far as the water looking a slight bit yellow, then you have the right concentration for the case you are describing. 👍🏼 let me know if you have any questions / doubts based on what I just wrote! Thank you for watching, lovely lady! I truly appreciate the support 🫶🏼 wishing you a wonderful day ❤️🌸

    When would be a good time to start shaping the new leaf of a cattleya? I've been waiting until it fully matures and I use veltro tape to connect it to a nearby bulb. Alot of the old sheaths on mine are splitting by themselves.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids วันที่ผ่านมา

      😍Hi Joe 💐 the way you are doing it, is one way to do it 👍🏼 however, I start to work with new growths the moment they start to swell at the base of the older growth, by way of light training. As in, turn the pot in such a way that the new growth is facing in the opposite direction of the main light source so that it will automatically grow toward the light and for the most part, the growth does that without being tied / helped out. If you would like to watch a video on that, here is the link th-cam.com/video/o9jb0jHV_QI/w-d-xo.html it is a very old video, so forgive any awkward filming or staggered commentary. I believe that, since then, I have improved on my delivery 🫣😅 thank you so much for watching this video and for your amazing kind support here 🫶🏼 have yourself a fabYOUlous day, amigo 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      FFF 🥳🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 meine liebe Freundin, hi! It is a shame when it happens at any time, but worse when it is the actual growing season and then the conditions are extreme... of all seasons, not the warm months of the year!! 😓 while I hate that it happens in my case, I kinda expect it to because...... 🙄 still, I had high hopes for this second new growth that my dowiana put out, a first within the same growing season time frame, but I was wrong. Meh! I am now curious to see if the base will still produce roots. The eyes down there are fine... 🤞🏼 vamos a ver! Wishing you the most fabYOUlous of days, amiga mia!! spider mites can cause this as well. You might not see the mite damage on the plant and then you peel back the bracts and you will see the damage caused by the little buggers. (and about a week later, you will see the mite damage on some other part of the plant)

    Great information. I recently had the same thing happen to one of my Dowianas. I'm curious as to when thos outer sheaths should be removed. Sometimes I think I remove them too early and lose strength in that section of the plant. Thanks for sharing your videos with the orchid community.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Pat 😍💐 this is a dowiana... soooo there is that 🥲 the outer sheaths should be nice and dry, completely hardened off, all 'juices' been and gone, before removing them. When the conditions are warm and there is plenty of airflow, the sheaths should not be removed while still green or even, just going yellow. The longer they are on, the better 👍🏼 thank YOU so much for watching, lovely lady! I hope you are having a wonderful week 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    That has happened to 2 of mine. I brought them in October - November ( temps cooling in New Jersey). And the growths stalled. They still alive do you think they will continue to grow when season changes or that's it .

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi 😍💐 stalled growths will either continue growing once they have acclimated, OR they will stop where they are at, remain viable, grow roots and then a new eye will start to swell at the base to then grow properly again. These are the 2 options. As long as the sheaths do not go damp and look like what this orchid did, those growths can still perform. Even this growth, now not being there anymore. I cut it high enough to maintain the base, where it is still possible for it to grow roots, and the eyes are still able to produce new growths, if the orchid chooses to keep this lead active. I hope that your growths are just throwing a little stalling strop and that they will pick up speed again, once they have acclimated 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching and for your excellent question ❤️🌸

    It’s leaning. That won’t be easy to correct. It does grow and bloom in winter. It can take cool temperatures too. It’s supposed to have cool temperatures in winter.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Rosebud 😍 💐welcome! I am not sure if you have commented on my channel before, perhaps my memory fails me, but in case this is your first time, I would like to extend a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, commenting and watching the video. I appreciate your time and support, thank you 🫶🏼 yes, the lean is because of the direction of light that it is growing towards based on the shelf it lives on and where the major light source comes from. I am only attempting to correct the angle of the new growths to grow in such a way that the orchid can stay in the pot for a little longer. I would prefer to have her on a mount and may still opt to divide her into a more manageable piece, get that on a large mount so that it can grow on to it. I was concerned about the evaporative cooling of the leca being too cold for the roots. This orchid does get a substantial temperature drop during my winters, its the larger bowl with more leca and that permanent reservoir as opposed to a mask with a reservoir, that had me concerned. So far, she is doing well and I hope that the new growths currently growing, will bloom. If not, then it is the lack of light. My Fall and winter, so far, have been a nightmare when it comes to light. Having had mostly overcast days, or, if the mornings were sunny, by the time the afternoon came, when the sun would hit this orchid, it is overcast. However, she is still alive and for that, I am grateful 👌🏼 I love this orchid, all rupicolous laelias, as a matter of fact 😅 hope you are having a wonderful 2025 already and again, welcome! Thank you for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Hi 😍💐 been thinking of you and your orchids, as to how you are coping with the in and out, this far into the season? I hope you are ok and your orchids are showing signs of appreciating your efforts 👍🏼 I have Cousin Itt in bloom as well. You are right about having blooms around that make our winter special. You are right, while I always calculate what an orchid does / doesn't do in a season, by going on Calendar month... it is possible now, that this one will bloom 2x within a 12 month period because of when it bloomed this time around. Good point 👍🏼 thank you for watching! Hope you are having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Lorali, hi 😍💐 it is so good to see you!! I saw that you subscribed back in September, but I think this is your first time commenting? If so, first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for subscribing and for the support that comes along with the time you choose to watch my videos. Truly appreciated 🫶🏼 IF you have commented in the past, and I am repeating my welcome, then... better 2x than not at all 🥰 I will definitely do a summary of how orchids 'came into my life and stayed' for sure. As a matter of fact, I will start the January stream with that 👍🏼 in a nutshell, I was born and raised in Kenya and at the age of 12 I saw a large pink bloom in a friend's parent's garden and loved it. They cut a piece of this plant off and I got to take it home to tie to one of the trees in the garden of the apartment complex I was living in at the time. I had no idea about orchids, but I suddenly had an orchid jungle with many divisions as the word spread that 'Nina wants orchids!' 😂 now that I am 59, there is more to the story, but that is how things started... with what I know now to be a cattleya. I am in S'ern Spain. Very close to Gibraltar. Paradise from April through November, and currently navigating orchid survival anxiety months. 10 weeks to go before I feel I can be safe as the Spring is closer than just around the corner. 🤞🏼 thank you, once again, for being here, for watching! I hope you are having a wonderful day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Some bloom like clockwork (my labiata always comes into bloom last week of September, George King the third week of November, etc.), others just bloom when they feel like it. My digbyana just put up 2 new growths with sheaths, even though it just bloomed a month or so ago, and C. lueddemaniana just blooms now whenever the growths mature, so I get two smaller bloomings rather than one big one, which is fine.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I have 2 growths again, on my digbyana, and I am hoping to get both to bloom again after 1 lead did not bloom for several years 🤞🏼 I have it on the glass shelf right up against the terrace door. One growth, I see a sheath but the other one is still a little behind. Such a shame that this orchid would be much more impressive if I could keep the growths going during the winter with the heat and higher light which would make it perform so much better. But that is the story of my life (thinking Dinard 😑) now, my Fredclarkeara is going to bloom so much later than it ever has before! Which is also astounding because Jack and Fred came in at the same time and used to bloom at the same time. The buds on Fred still need another 10 days before the first one opens which will bring us into February... usually, I have it in bloom all throughout January. See how it catches up with new growths during the coming season. Anyway, I am looking forward to a sensational blooming from Fred 🙌🏼🥳 hope you are having a great weekend, my friend! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids yeah, your FDK is late. You need to talk to him about blooming earlier so the smell of gingerbread is in the house for the holidays. Rooting for both leads to bloom on digbyana, although they probably won't bloom together. Mine had 5 leads bloom this fall but there were never more than 2 blooms open at the same time. Can't figure that out because they should all mature and bloom together but they never do.

      Hi Linda 😍💐 the blooms are impressive, indeed, and most come with a fantastic fragrance that usually has a medicinal fresh note in it. I like that kind of scent. I used to love going to the pharmacy with my grandparents as a child, because the smell in there was always so fresh and the pharmacy candies would add to the sweet note. Delish 🥰 and this genus is just fun to grow because they have a speed to them during their active growth which we cannot experience with many of our orchids. If you can ... get one and give it a go 🫶🏼 I am always here if you have any doubts or questions! Thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! Have a beautiful day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @ I have an After Dark that is just showing a new growth. It’s planted in bark and I only have it since April. It didn’t bloom for me this year. I’d like to transition to pumice. Do you think now would be a good time? Would you cut off the roots or leave them to anchor the bulbs?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh!! Go ahead a repot that straight away! I would not cut any roots off that don't fall off with the bark on their own. They will be super handy for anchoring 👍🏼 also, as the new roots grow the older roots will serve as a buffer for the new roots to get into the media, possibly attach to the older roots making a future repot much easier. You see, the velamen of catasetinae is like thin tissue paper and will stick to everything. It makes a repot or uppot very stressful because that velamen will tear, no matter how careful we are. Having the older roots to provide a potential space for the new roots to grow into, protects them from the pumice which is so porous, the velamen attached to that will tear. I know I am talking a couple of years before the situation arises, but to mitigate the stress of a repot when that time comes, we can plan ahead with the repot present day 👍🏼 I hope that this was helpful! If it prompted further questions... you know the drill 😉
