    I have a mounted angraecum didieri. I actually water it daily per the instruction of the nursery it was purchased from. They told me to "shower it daily and fertilizer". Ive had it for about a month and now its got some new growth

    I like transparent pots because I like to see the roots and root growth and what growing roots look like. It's informative. With my own orchids I like transparent pots because I think it's neat to see the medium and how it looks while I water them.

    I love transparent pots - I feel like it's a way for me to be able to see the roots and have no question about the health of my orchids. Most of mine are set backs that people gave me and the transparent pot helps me see that the root tips are growing even if I don't see any new leaves growing.

    Difficult question! Opaque pots are more common, affordable and practical! Yes sometimes is good to see some root in the pot, but we can always see in any case the arial roots! Chose what allow you to continue posting your video and enjoying it! Cause for me, this is my selfish ultimate goal: continue watching your videos for as long as I can

    I've just purchased some 1930s/50s glass hanging light shades, I've put some transparent plastic bowls inside them that I've put holes in, so it gives my Orchids the light they need but not direct sunlight. The glass hanging shades, sometimes called fly traps, can also give a clear indication of how much water is at it's bottom. They're expensive, but I'm hoping a good way of giving my Orchids what they need. I'm thinking of putting some fairy lights around the insides too, getting the best of both worlds.

    Dany, I started struggling with my germinyanum and tried many different sets, but now it's doing quite well mounted in cork and buried into lots of bark, in a vase with microfiber at the bottom and connecting with the base of the cork, to keep the buried roots moist. I see there are two "kinds" of roots, the aeirial ones (they have lots of them) and the ones they use to get really steady and dig deep to guarantee moisture even when days are dry. Ok, Norway is colder, but my plant lives in a rather warm environment and even gets sunshine through the windows. It slowed down the growing drastically during winter, even having artificial light. And now when days are brighter and much warmer, it exploded in new roots, branches and much bigger leaves and much faster growth. I see the plant likes this half mounted set, being able to have aerial roots and sticking to the cork if it wants. I believe, from my experience now with this plant, that very moist all the time will be an easy target for fungal infections. If you can provide a possibility for both moist and dry roots for the plant, I guess it's the recipe of success for them. Mine is also small, but since 3 weeks ago started producing 10 branches really quickly and spider-web like aerial roots. I also allow the plant to almost dry sometimes, just to make sure its roots will not be soaked 100% of the time. In fact, I keep them moist, but never soaked. And the aerieal roots get some misting from the humidifier, no more than that. I hope this can be of any help for you. Regards, Alex Falcao

    Transparent pots are certainly preferred here (both *here* here and in videos). Makes it so much easier to see root progress, orchid and media health, etc. Put the transparent pots into in opaque decorative pots, and you don't have to worry about algae, either. :-)

    Hell yeah ! Transparent pots are the best ! I use them too ... I love watching the evolution of roots ! This is how I saw that I burn my orchids roots with fertilizer (even though that I used very low of the recommended dosage ! ). Use them, Dani ! You know very well they are the most suited for your type of educational video's !

    I usually prefer transparent pots because it lets me check both the roots health and the humidity level of the media, however there are exceptions.
    I found out that some orchids, mainly the terrestrial ones, but also the lithophytes and some epiphytes which would usually burry their roots deep inside moss, much prefer have their roots kept in the dark (in fact light seems to inhibit root growth for those).
    Another issue I encountered and which demands to be extra careful, is that they can overheat much faster than opaque pots, and basically cook the roots with the slightest ray of sun (greenhouse effect at the root level....)
    Of course, in your setup where the pots are usually buried inside an opaque container, those problems are most likely minimized.

  • @oxigen85
    @oxigen85 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    OF course I prefer transparent pots, but opaque ones work too, as long as you can show other roots from the same sort of orchids.

    Hi Danny. Thanks a lot.... Now I want to add one to my collection! All my orchids are on sw pots whether or not they're in full leca or a combination of spaghnum moss and bark. So opaque is what I go for.
    Rowan
    P.S. I just noticed that I'm one of the few that like the opaque! I think if the orchid is doing well you don't need to see the roots.

    Yes yes to transparent pot no no to opaque post finally the algae issue will be minimised in transparent pot just by keeping it in decorative containers which looks great to eyes and cut off the light if we can leave half a inch water if we leave our orchids for a week works like semi hydro but it may also have the quirks of degradation of media faster

    Transparent so one can 'see' the roots. Do small black spots on the back of leaves indicate disease? Mine is a Darwin and has been outside/humid/no direct sunlight, but bright light. Just noticed the black spots the last couple of days.

  • @NesuChambers
    @NesuChambers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    About your Agcm leonis, I would say you have the Comoros variety (bigger one) or a hybrid between the two. I have the Madagascar variety (smaller one) and its definetly much smaller than yours. Mine is in a 8cm pot with a leafspan of about 15cm. Leaves are chubbier, very thick and succulent, their tips are rounder and theres fewer of them. My plant was already blooming size last year but I got it with poor roots and the spike blasted. Its growing a new flower now :)
    I prefer the Madagascar variety for its very compact size and its higher tolerance to drought, but it will probably have a poorer bloom and spike count vs the Comoros one :)
    About the wild plants, many nurseries you know of have some wild collected stuff. Many wild collected plants come to EU actually. Most are seed grown of course but some species you get from even places like Schwerter and specially O&M are wild collected.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the info about the varieties :) oh my those are some serious accusations, do you have some proof or official statements for that? We wouldn't want any sellers to .. 'contact' us 😣

    • @NesuChambers
      @NesuChambers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well for starters you see some 'orchid genus PLACE' ie 'Encyclia spec Brazil' 'Bulbophyllum spec Sarawak'. Those normally mean collected stuff from those places that, since they dont have blooms they only have the collection place as reference.
      Then for example I got a Macropodanthus alatus from Schwerter, and you could seel it was growing in a tree the way the stem was growing and everything, and the older leaves were completely different from the new ones. Leaves often grow different in their local places since conditions are different and there's not the same access to water etc.
      I don't want to expose any nursery or anything. Its just that this is a reality few people is aware of.
      And still the majority of the orchids they sell are seed grown. Often EU sellers wont even be fully aware of it, as the sellers exporting from tropical places cheat on CITES etc.
      Also, in the case of some 'newer' species like Bulbophyllum pollicullosum, 100% of plants being sold are wild collected, until nurseries produce seedlings.

    Hi! I just recently acquired an A. leonis. The orchid nursery has it posted as the Comoro type. However, I recently watched a VLOG in which makes me think that my orchid may be the Madagascar type. I'm also not sure if what I have is a seedling or not. Is there a difference in the appearance of their roots? Thanks!
