Omg, this are my grandma’s favorites cookies, we’re Mexicans and even here in Mexico I could not find a good recipe for this kind of cookies until this one, thank you so mucho, we love them, saludos desde Mexico 🇲🇽
My mom was from Tennessee. When she made these she called them Dust Balls. She made them with finely chopped either pecan or walnuts. She would either roll them in powered when they were warm or she would let them cool completely, dip them in icing and roll them in coconut. My dad loved the coconut ones best.
I use finely chopped pecans for my wedding cookies, or they are also called tea cakes. I form the cookies into balls and roll them in the powdered sugar twice. Soooo good. The almond meal sounds delicious too. Thanks, I am going to try those.
One of the reasons these cookies are so widely known throughout different cultures are because of trade. When people would travel to new places they would often gift/trade with goods or recipes ☺️❤️❤️❤️
In Puerto Rico, they called mantecaditos just add yellow color and sprinkles and also polvorones no color added but you leave them as is or do a thump print and add guava paste. Thanks for reminding me of the memories.
They're simply divine! I'm Greek too and my version is adding crushed, blanched - roasted almonds. The flavour is out of this world. Happy baking everyone 🌲
I do think the crescent shape of these go back to breads and sweets that were made for thousands of years to honor the Goddess and the shape remains in many cultures for this and makes me smile..
My mom called these Bohemian Crescents. We made them every Christmas. We used walnuts. I made them with my daughter and now she makes them for her family. Feliz Navidad John & Family.
I like to roll them into balls then flatten them into round discs...been making these for 30 years...for Christmas...I use finely minced walnuts, pecans or almonds....they are little bits of heaven on earth! Love watching you bake!
I guess you're right about every culture. these are very like the Viennese Crescents I grew up with in my house. We used walnuts instead of almonds but otherwise the same. Sometimes I dip them in melted chocolate instead of powdered sugar.
I had a greek coworker who would bring these cookies in from a local greek bakery by him. I always inhale them up! They had tiny pieces of almond, or something kind of nut inside. So airy and not too sweet! I LOVE them!!
Se ven ricas. Me fascinan tus recetas. En Puerto Rico le llamamos polvorones a otro tipo de galletas a base de manteca vegetal o mitad manteca con mitad mantequilla. Estas que tu muestras nunca las he intentado preparar, pero creo que serán las próximas que haga.
Wonderful! My MIL called them moons. She was Italian. She put chopped pecans and shaped them into crescents. Scottish..plain shortbread..in various shapes. No vanilla and no nuts.
I’m greek and yes these are amazing. We don’t use almond flour but we do add toasted crushed almonds. They are amazing. They last three weeks but usually they don’t last long especially going to see family during the holidays we all exchange some with each other. One tip I would suggest for you to try is melt the butter over low heat the day before and add it to a bowl covered with cellophane to cool in the fridge over night. Then on the day you make them take out the bowl to room temperature and remove the milk residue at the bottom. Pierce a hole in the middle and dump it out. It makes them even more soft. My mom uses a special Greek butter and margarine. Funniest thing is they break easily but she insist to fly them over when she visits at Christmas. It’s hilarious cause she gets so disappointed loo
Made thses for second time. Everyone says them up lol yummy This time I put cinnamon in powder sugar. Whisked it up. I split the mixture into two halves. One was almonds n walnuts roasted n crushed. Second half waasaby nuts roasted crushed. I coated them as soon as out of oven. Waited 10 min to put second coat on. They turned out rather well. Love your videos Merry Christmas
In Germany we called them „Vanille Kipferl“ ( you can put an egg yolk in it ) and we put vanilla sugar in the powder sugar , my favorite Christmas cookies ! Love it and your channel
Last fall I rolled them, made prints with a fork at intervals, sprinkled a sugar-cinnamon mixture on and put a sliced almond at one end for a "fingernail ," then baked them. They were a hit at our party. The name I know them by is butter balls.
John, Mom made these for us every Christmas season. We called them "Butter Balls". There are two differences between Mom's recipe and yours; she didn't add the almond flour (of course), And she only added 1/4 cup powdered sugar. " Really?". you may query. "Oh aye" I respond in my best Scottish accent. When it was my turn to make these, I thought I would raise the amount to 1/3 and it just didn't taste right. This is what I think, when you use only 1/4 cup, the dough is very nearly savory, just a tish into the "sweet" spectrum. As a little girl, I didn't think it tasted at all palatable! But think about it. If you have a nearly savory ball of melt in your mouth goodness and you cover it with one of god's sweetest ingredients: Powdered sugar, you pop it into your mouth and are instantly hit with a powerful blast of sweetness, Then bite into the very nearly savory, melt-in-your-mouth taste of heaven, there are layered flavors here. The sugar immediately begins to blend with the baked balls. As you chew, the slowly blend into just the right amount of sweet to not out shine the butter and pecans and vanilla. Anyway, I know you'll make them as you always have...as your mom made them. and you'd be right to. It's memories of every Christmas you've ever hda. You want to share them with your own sons and make new memories of your own. TRADITIONNNNN!!!. Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year!
I love these cookies!! I just made a batch over the New Years. My new way is to roll them out like regular cookie dough and make fun shapes with different cookie cutters. I could go for one right now with my cup of espresso :) I just picked up a bunch of organic flour to make your brownies but I may make myself a small batch of the Mexican Wedding Cookies! I make my family's version (we just call them wedding cookies) from a pink butter-stained recipe card my mother wrote out more than five decades ago, and it advocates the use of A LOT of pecans! As I learned to bake over the years, I modified the recipe a little: a. I don't use the margarine the original recipe called for - just, ew; b. I roll the cookies twice in powdered sugar: once upon exiting the oven, and again when they're cool and the sugar from the first dredge has melted; & c. I use a cookie scoop for uniformity because I have OCD and the orderliness makes my aggravating brain cells happy. ;-) Happy baking!!
Love these! Our household always used pecans & the crescent shape. I will have to try the almond! Maybe start a new tradition...having both of course, lol.

True story that these are known all over the world. I live in Hungary and we make them with ground walnuts in a crescent shape. Excellent!
Those cookies were introduced in Hungary by Austrians, and 250 years of Holly Roman Empire in Latin America brought them to the entire continent!
